    Welcome to CitizensM

I'm a more traditional full service hotel lover - so this was me going out on a limb trying this unique brand while traveling alone! Someone described it to me before I stayed as being comparable to staying in an airstream trailer - that is spot on! There are tons of pros: Location Cleanliness Technology!! Everything you can do from bed with your iPad! Bar Common Spaces are fun! It's very self service - you even make your own hotel keys! The cons (to me) You can't mobile check in No in app messaging No facecloths in the room - you get those at the toiletry station - I don't get that! The size - I had 2 suitcases and no where to really put them and I walked by another room with a stroller that was outside - probably because there was no space for it! If you're the minimalist traveler and you don't travel with kids or friends - this is an awesome option!

Citizen M is my favorite hotel since I first discovered this kind of hotel business model in Switzerland. I am the type of traveler that rarely stays in my hotel room so the CitizenM has everything I need: a cozy king sized bed, bright beautiful windows, in the heart of the city, and most importantly squeaky CLEAN. The Citizen M in Chicago is no different. This chain got this equation down to the "T". The location was fantastic, and the views were wonderful (city skyline Mag Mile views). The check-in process was easy, and self explanatory. This particular location has a gym on the 5th floor (shared with the residential tenants in the building). Parking is $50 a night if you choose to park with Citizen M at a nearby garage that they have a relationship with. I'd suggest parking using the spothero app! You'll find the best parking deals in Chicago. The check-in counter also had a lot of complimentary items for guests to keep, such as shoe cleaning kit, vanity kit, slippers, make up remover, etc. Overall, a wonderful stay!

I think this is a great hotel in a great location in Chicago. If you are young and attending a conference or visiting for a few days then you will love it. Very tech forward, millennial dream: minimum talking when checking in and you can check in by yourself. Everything in the room is controlled through an iPad and room Itself is pretty small. It's good for one person or for couple of you can navigate small spaces. Their shower stall is definitely for 1 person and combined with a toilet but separated with a glass door. I would recommend to buy their breakfast. They have a coffee bar and solid breakfast options like sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, lox, cream cheese, cheeses and meats, Greek yogurt and fresh fruits.

Situated in the heart of Chicago, it is a no-frills hotel that is both modern and cozy. The lobby is located on the 4th floor so upon entering this hotel, there are two elevators that take you to the 4th floor. The lobby is staffed by one employee, with a bunch of tablets for self check-in. The staff on-duty was professional and helped with the check-in, so I did not need to use the tablets. The check-in process did not take too long, only a few minutes. Since I arrived a bit early at around 8am, I was fully expecting that a room was not going to be available until check-in time, however I was lucky enough that there was one room available for early check-in. The elevators to the room are separate from the elevators from ground floor to the lobby. Walking down the corridors to get to my room, I was immediately feeling that this hotel was recently renovated as many things look new! The room itself was quite small but had everything I needed. There is a single iPad that was able to control the room lighting, curtains, and TV. These same functions are available on the mobile app if you choose to download the app. As a couple with one shared luggage, the room was just enough space, however this might not be the case if you have more luggage. While the room looked modern and new, the bedding had a sweaty smell to them that my wife pointed out. We contacted the staff at the lobby and were able to get the issue resolved. I cannot fully blame the hotel as the cleaning of bedding usually is outsourced to a cleaner. As for food and drinks at the hotel, they offer a breakfast buffet as extra add-on charge. The spread contained some hot items such as potatoes, sausage and bacon, and some cold items like yogurt, salmon, pastries, and fruit. There is cranberry juice, orange juice, and milk. They have one free coffee bar drink per guest included with the buffet. I got their mocha and it was a nicely balanced cup of coffee. As for dinner, I had a Chicken Quinoa Salad ordered from their bar. It came out relatively quick, with the ingredients cold and fresh. The salad had grilled chicken that was not too dry, but also not too moist. The seasoning was enough, and the dressing was just the right amount. Perhaps if the dressing was served on the side, guests could adjust it to their taste. For $16, it is a reasonable cost to get some greens into my body.

citizenM is our new favorite hotel. Check-in is all self-serve, even making your own key card, which I loved because it means minimal small talk. Even so, the staff we did interact with were super warm and friendly. The lobby is on the 4th floor and has a ton of shared space. There's work desks/tables, cozy lounge areas that look like super cool living rooms, a bar, and a huge terrace with plenty of seating that looks out at Michigan Avenue. It has an upscale hostel vibe. Everyone was chill, hanging out, working, reading. It felt easy to settle in. Once you're up on the 4th floor, you switch elevators to get to your room. Not a big deal, just something to know. We absolutely loved our room. It's definitely on the smaller side, but it was perfect for two people. If you have kids or more than 2, that might be an issue. The bed is smooshed up against the window so you can fall asleep looking at the city lights, which made my heart happy (especially because we caught the first snow of the season). Everything in the room can be controlled from the app or the iPad on the desk, including the curtains and blackout curtains. There's also mood lighting that you can change the color of, which was a fun add on. The shower was great. It's rain-style but also has a handheld attachment with different settings. They even have AM and PM body washes depending on when you shower, which is such a small touch but really cute. Only tiny complaint is that we had multiple towel sizes but no washcloths, which was kinda weird. The location is perfect if you want to do anything in the Loop, and they offer breakfast and late checkout for an extra fee. We'll definitely be back.

I think I liked this uber-modern, unique hotel in the loop. Even after a week or two, I'm still a little conflicted, so let me try to break it down. +Great location, walkable to the riverfront. -Doing that new thing where they pass everything on to you so they don't have to employ as many people. I was coming off of big travel delays (ie, tired and weary) and they had me scanning my own driver's license and making my own key. Stop trying so hard to be futuristic and leave these steps to hotel employees. +Cool vibes and great, GREAT spaces to work from. Comfortable seating, good WiFi, outdoor rooftop space. -Staff wasn't very friendly in my experience. Just kind of distant and aloof. +The bed was comfortable and the room darkening shade put me into a near coma. -The AC condensation dripped, and although they warned of it with a letter in the room, best they could do was offer a towel. -Controlling everything (temp, some lights, TV) with an iPad is a bit obnoxious when it kept freezing up and not working well. -I found the hallway disorienting with darkness, with only some light red lighting in it. +While the room was small, it was just what I needed as a solo biz traveler and makes sense in a busy area of Chicago. +Breakfast was INCREDIBLE. Best hotel breakfast I've had during a busy year of travel. Good coffee, greek yogurt with loads of fresh berries available, chia seeds, jam, delicious breads, sausage, bacon, the works. As a business traveler who needed to hop on calls and not explore as much, this was ideal. So to me, the good far outweighs the not-so-good, and I'd consider staying here again for sure. Again my only critiques are service related, and the fact that some elements seem to be trying too hard. But that's their brand and their choice, and nothing is that big of a deal at the end of the day.

Great location in the heart of downtown. Identical in concept and layout to all the other locations. I certainly would not pay for the breakfast. You're in Chicago!!!! So many food options that you can explore that are in walking distance.

It's what I imagine sleeping in a Tesla would be. Operated on a tablet to open or close the shade, control lights, etc. My room must have had a leak. The floors were covered in towels. It lacks typical hotel things like ice, room cleaning. It has some minimal food beyond breakfast. Location was great. Would probably choose another hotel next time.

I'm real particular about hotels I definitely prefer modern and chic hotels over the old money expensive with even older decor hotels. I took a trip to Chicago for my birthday and finally decide on CitizenM. The location was pretty good. I hated the self-checkin process. Like why? It was so many employees standing around. Thankfully, Marquis came and rescued me! He was super helpful before I went upstairs and found my room right off the elevator. No ma'am pressed ham. I am a light sleeper, I'm not about to do it. So I went back downstairs and another young man was looking for ages trying to find me another room. I was over it but after 15 minutes we landed on a room with an OK view. The room is cute and hella small. I knew that before booking but I was traveling solo so I didn't mind as much but definitely could use more space. Things I liked: *location *modern control system for window, tv, lighting *there was a housekeeping cart on the floor all day everyday so I did what any civilized person would do. I took a whole buncha shxt everyday lol Biggest complaints I wish they'd do better: *there was no trash can in the room outside a very small one in the bathroom. *there was no flat sheet on the bed. Fitted and blanket, that's it. I ended up getting a fitted sheet off the housekeeping cart because yuck. *bed decor is cute but probably not sanitized *iron room is efficient but highly inconvenient I don't recall getting any drink tickets for the bar like I read in one review. Idk how likely I'd return to this concept, I paid $750 for 3 night stay in June which seemed on the higher side from some of the earlier rates I saw on social media as I was evaluating the reservation.

A cute, comfy, modern hotel that is conveniently located in downtown (Michigan Avenue is right there and State Street is not too far away), with great take-what-you-need amenities available in the lobby. I made the reservation for them through their site and despite checking in close to midnight, there was thankfully one staff member on-site in the lobby (once I figured out how to get in). **Check-in Process** Once you get into the lobby, take the lift (elevator) up to the 4th floor - this is where the lobby is. Because there was a staff on-site, despite the late hour, instead of using the computers, they helped check me in and generate the key card for my room so I could go sleep. If you don't want any human interaction, they definitely have a convenient check-in process that doesn't involve any humans - courtesy of scanners & laptops that you can self-check-in. Pro-tip: If you're arriving late (and looking to check-in, i.e., don't have your key card), if it's after 9 or 10 p.m., head towards the handicapped door (to the right of the revolving doors) and ring the call sign to be let in; the revolving doors are locked after 9 or 10 p.m. **The Room** The room, as you can see from the photos feels a little small, but there is a king-sized one and tremendously comfortable if you like firmer mattresses. I do think it's perfect for one person or even a couple. There is a tinnnny fridge in the sink/counter area, but it's not the best - my food ended up spoiling unfortunately and I had to throw it away. There is no microwave in the room, but you can head down to the lobby/common area where there are microwaves. The lights (including mood lighting), temperature, TV, black-out blinds, curtains, and everything else can be controlled via an iPad provided in the room. In addition to the iPad (that controls everything) there are switches for the lights, curtains, & blinds. My view wasn't the best - I ended up seeing into the room of the apartment complex in the same block. There are two trash cans - one that has a bi-split trash by the sink and another in the bathroom Cons: 1. There was no flat sheet on the bed; just the fitted one and a blanket. You can ask housekeeping for a flat sheet. 2. If you want housekeeping every day, you have to request it; the default is to skip housekeeping until you are checking out. 3. The room I was in had plugs only by the desk, not the window side. The hotel is conveniently close to all the L lines and bus stops, the good ol' Bean, the museum campus, shopping, and so much more! I'd recommend this as a neat get-away/staycation/conveniently located hotel, but preferably for solo travellers.

I do not even know where to start. If my job were not paying for this stay, I would never stay here. Housekeeping seems to be severely lacking. There was a wrapper from a previous guest INSIDE the light above the bed, and the clothing shelf was dusty. I had to wipe it down myself before I would put my clothes on there. The rooms are ridiculously small. It feels like they were designed from a child's drawing. The bed is wedged against the window, so if you're sharing the room, one person has to crawl over the other to get out of bed. That's a terrible design unless you're 12. At check-in, we were told the AC vents might drip due to the heat, but it was more like Chinese water torture all night. It not a "drip" so much as a full on waterfall. The TV is controlled by an iPad, which constantly loses connection. Change the channel a few times and it freezes. Casting from your phone works but only for a few minutes before reverting to the main hotel screen. Most lighting is controlled by either the iPad or switches located by the bed which includes lights for the bathroom. Why is the only bathroom light switch next to the bed? Odd. At the hotel bar, the bartender overheard my coworkers talking about the room fridges not being cold. He admitted they know that and suggested we buy a bag of ice to keep items cold. And just when I thought I had seen it all, part of the bed frame fell off in the middle of the night with a loud bang. It nearly gave me a heart attack. It was being held onto the bed frame with magnets. What the...? Bottom line: this hotel is trying way too hard to be trendy and ends up being a frustrating mess. I would not recommend it.

    Accessible Room

Don't let the three-star rating fool you. I generally love the CitizenM Hotel. I will not rehash the more in-depth analysis of their schtick I wrote when reviewing the one in Seattle. So, I'll summarize by saying I appreciate the hyper-modern technology and the very effective blackout curtains. While space is typically more limited, being a solo traveler, I don't need much. Even though I did not request it specifically, I got placed in an accessible room. This meant I had much more space, a larger bathroom, and a little foldaway bench in the shower. While it didn't have the under-bed storage, the size of the room made up for it. For a minor note: I found only one side of the bed had plugs. I feel that most people charge their phones by the side of their bed, and while it was okay for one person, were I there with another, they'd have to charge it at the desk across from the bed. As a substantial complaint, the mattress was notably hard and firm. Usually, hotels have a medium mattress, but this one didn't feel like it. It did not make for very comfortable sleep, which is the primary purpose of a hotel room. I want something where I am not tempted to go and sleep in the grass outside. Finally, some closing notes for those traveling for leisure: 1. Price - I found the nightly rate for the hotel was more than reasonable at under $200 a night for a July booking about a week or two out. 2. Safety - The hotel seems to be in a safe area with high foot traffic (lots of "eyes on the street,") and you need a keycard to access the floors with rooms 3. Location - The hotel is close to transit, the Bean, the museum campus, and other potential tourist attractions. 4. Noise - City noise from the 15th floor was minimal. Though I periodically heard a loud vehicle or a siren, this wasn't over the top or distracting. 5. View - It is possible to pay for a room with a prettier view. If you decline as I did, your view will only be on the building across from the hotel.

Really interesting hotel! Convenient check in process that doesn't involve any humans. Great price for what you get. The rooms are small but I can't imagine you need much more. I wish there was a fridge situation or microwave but we made it work. The lights and everything can be controlled via an iPad provided in the room. You can change the mood lighting too which was fun. The only issue I found was getting toilet paper delivered. We were here for four days and ran out and when we used the iPad to ask for more they gave us a guilt trip video stating we're killing the world asking for more. Didn't love that but as an environmentalist I get it

The last Hampton inn I got stuck in the elavator and had an off experience with getting help, so I chose to use the stairs. Upon using the stairs we were met with SEVERAL linen boxes blocking our only exit. They were all in different directions and could not be easily rolled out, especially when we were blocked behind them. Instead we had to parkour over it to escape. There was a valet driver sitting at the front and ignored us after I asked for help and continued to say she's just valet she can't do anything. These bins were there for well over an acceptable time, blocking the only stairs and fire safety exit but also for people that didn't enjoy their sketchy elevators. And again, pallets were there days later also blocking the ONLY emergency exit and stairwell exit. Completely unacceptable in a normal city let alone one with history of building fires. Exits should not be blocked and it's clear the building uses this space for "storage" often. Before the fire situation even happened, their breakfast situation was insane. Our first morning was on a Monday. Their service is until 10 am and around 9am we headed down for some fuel. By that time, the dining room was packed, the tiny buffet room was empty of food but packed with people who were waiting for tables, chairs and all of the food to be restocked. One woman was trying to run the whole operation while two men just stood behind the concierge desk and watched the shit show of breakfast service happen in front of them. Someone should have helped her get breakfast together. Even if it wasn't their job, in hospitality, their job as hotel manger or anyone who works in the hotel is to make sure the guest have a pleasant stay, not to look pretty sitting in front of the Hampton inn welcome to Chicago sign. Overall unorganized and not something nice to look at when you first walk into a hotel lobby, chaos. You would think the grievances would stop there. However we were then denied the benefits that we get as gold Hilton members. Previously at hiltons and Hilton branches we have been offered two bottles of water per room per day. Most of the time they would be offered upon check in (which they did not) and given daily throughout our stay. This time the concierge allowed my mom just to go grab them out of the fridge. The next day we did the same and the concierge Robyn gave me immediate backlash even after I said we were previously allowed to take them. She repeatedly said I was wrong and gave no hospitality to hear my side of the story. I didn't want to cause a scene and returned my water. She then slammed them onto our table as I was eating breakfast with my family. Definitely could have been better ways for her to deal with the problem and I did not appreciate the hostility coming from the concierge at 9 am. We were already all crammed at a small table because there are no seating arrangements easily accessible for families or even enough seats in the dining room. One star because housekeeping did great and my room was clean and refreshed when necessary (and because zero is not an option) Otherwise I would hope I never have to stay here again.

The staff were somewhat friendly until different things started to come up... 1st issue: Friday night the elevators completely stopped working. Big problem due to having a small infant and needing to get the stroller down. We were staying on the 10th floor. But an even bigger problem was that we started to notice floods of people come on our floor and notify us that there was not an exit even via the stairs!!!! My husband got on the phone with the front desk and the reply was "you are just going to have to wait for the elevator." This was completely unacceptable and UNSAFE- what if there was a fire? What if something dangerous was happening and we couldn't get out of the building? This itself would have landed this hotel at a 1-2 rating. The elevator issue didn't fill resolve itself for our whole stay- only 2/3 were in service and they took 5-10 minutes to show up each time. Seriously inconvenient. 2nd issue: they put one of our rooms (we had 3 groups) literally next to the pool. Kids were screaming their heads off beginning at 6:30am and it would carry on until 10pm. When SIL called down to the front desk she was told "sorry that's just how it is and it should quiet down soon." Again, completely unacceptable. We had young children and infants who needed to nap and go to bed early. 3rd issue: we asked for a late check out since our flight was later and we needed to get our baby to take a nap- after all of these issues they said they would extend it to 1:00, which was nice. We did then ask if it could be extended another hour and we were told it would cost $25. Fine... what was not fine was when there was banging on our door and someone walked in at 1:25pm to clean the room. It woke up our baby and completely defeated the purpose of us extending our late check out and paying the extra $25. 4th issue: apparently they don't clean the rooms unless you are staying for 3 or more nights? We didn't know about this and assumed we would get new towels since there is a sign in the bathroom saying "hang towels to reuse" or "if you would like new ones, place them on the floor". We needed new towels so we followed what it said and then were told our rooms wouldn't be cleaned or even checked to see if we needed new towels. Good things I will say: - very convenient area - provided a pack n play - Starbucks in the hotel - hotel room was clean Would have love for this stay to have been better since the Marriott is well known and usually a great place to stay.... but the lack of customer service makes it hard to want to book another room at a Marriott hotel.

Shamel, Jackie, and Gwen at the front desk delivered service that was consistent across every shift and every interaction. Requests were anticipated as often as they were fulfilled, and each struck the rare balance of being attentive without ever hovering. Great hotels are defined by their people, and these three make a persuasive case. They're the reason I'd return without hesitation and recommend the EMC2 to anyone visiting Chicago.

They also have an onsite dining option, The Albert, which offers creative seasonal dishes and expertly crafted cocktails. Chris, the bar manager, makes a fantastic Old Fashioned and really makes sure you are enjoying your time. One thing I noticed is that the bar doesn't have TVs for watching sports. It feels like they might be missing out on a big customer base because of this.

If you're able to splurge for club access at $200/person, you'll get to experience stunning city views, breakfast, afternoon tea, snacks, unlimited cocktails, and evening bites. We were also sent a bottle of wine and snacks to our room. I loved that they have a free spa area where you can use the sauna, heated stone loungers, and cold showers. The pool was stunning and we enjoyed swimming, just wish the hot tub was hotter as it was lukewarm. The room was great as well with a Nespresso machine and relaxing tub. Every time we stepped out of the room we would come back to a nice surprise, the room would be cleaned or they would leave the water and ice. Very attentive customer service here. Overall it was nice to live in luxury for the night, highly recommend if you're looking to splurge and relax! Hope I'll be able to stay again someday.

While not…read moreluxury, the hotel was very nice and comfortable, and the location was central to our wedding happenings. Everything was great until I checked out and discovered that I had been charged $88 per night for parking. That was quite unexpected. I had been in Chicago just a few months earlier and had paid $55 at the L7 Hotel. So I was shocked that the JW could charge so much. How is their valet parking better than the valet parking at the L7? I realize now that had I been traveling alone, and not with my family, it would have been cheaper to fly to Chicago, than drive the 4.5 hours from Ohio. Apparently the hospitality industry hasn't caught on to the current affordability crisis, or at least Marriott hasn't.

So the JW seemed affordable within the mix...at $700+ a night... I've stayed at a few JWs across Asia and the US. For whatever reason this one didn't seem to meet JW's normally high standard. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it started with the lobby and bar. It was always overcrowded and noisy, and just didn't feel very intimate or elegant. That followed with the fact there's only one restaurant in the hotel and both times we visited it was nearly empty. It's tucked on the second floor back in the corner, and just feels like a standard obligatory hotel restaurant. The food was good but the ambience was just odd. The room was well-appointed, including a comfortable bed and soft sheets. And the bathroom had everything we needed. But the service day-to-day required follow up. They forgot to restock coffee, water and cups a few times, and when I called the front desk they delivered in a trash bag. There is a daily service charge that I believe is $50 a night and provides Wi-Fi, access to gym, and a free class. We went to use the gym to access the sauna and steam room, but learned that's part of the spa not gym so had to pay a separate per person charge. The spa was refreshing but fairly standard. Not like the Seoul Marriott with multiple heated baths and a cold plunge. Call me spoiled. Don't get me wrong, the hotel is very nice but for $700 a night and knowing what I know about most JW's this just seems slightly below their standard. I wouldn't pay that much again, but would come back for a more affordable rate.

Both have incredible views but I would definitely recommend having at least one meal on the Miru patio if you are there during nice weather. -I was most surprised by their massive gym and has stunning views. It's also open 24 hours. They offered Pilates classes as well for an extra fee. -the hotel is brand new and all the finishes are so high end. The rooms are clean and quiet. The hallways are huge and felt like a maze to navigate but it also added to feeling of privacy. -there were so many high end details that made it extra special (the cozy Frette bath robes, welcome drinks, treat box in the room upon arrival, and the accent lighting in the room). -the location. It's just across the river from the heart of Michigan ave on the north end of a residential development. You don't feel like you are in the middle of the chaos of the city but the park, lake front and river are footsteps away. Negatives: -view was underwhelming ( fourth floor river view . Might choose the park view next time. I'd also recommend not facing the river as there was lots of honking/noise. -the room layout was awkward. They have this huge desk between the bed and tv. The full length mirror is a down a long hallway from bathroom/ where you would be getting dressed. -the room service comes on these huge heavy trays. The staff seemed like they were straining under the weight of it/ it was awkward. -I'd probably skip the spa/massage -$90/ day parking. Was able to do a spothero for about $40 next door.
