The Whisky Jack Grill Jasper, Alberta Canada July 2026 I was in Jasper for two days, on a train vacation that got me out of the District for the semi quincentennial. On Amtrak the trip began in Washington, D.C., through Chicago, then Seattle, then Jasper. Amtrak got me to Seattle seamlessly; and VIA Rail Canada got me from Seattle to Jasper, just as painlessly. Really good planning by my Amtrak Vacations representative, Kevin Guadagnoli, who was working through Railbookers. During the time I had in Jasper, I had the chance to breathe, to observe, to inhale, and to enjoy. Jasper provided all of this, and The Whisky Jack Grill was a major part of the benefits of this trip. I was at the Grill in mid-afternoon, and Tereza was there with no wait and a menu, and a helpful attitude. I settled in with no prior knowledge of what the venue had to offer. Great start: the menu included a beef goulash (spicy smoked paprika beef, potato and onion with a fresh oven-baked baguette, $22) that I was sorely tempted to order, and a competitor - beef Stroganoff (served with linguine past, topped with sour cream and pickles, $34). But I was looking for a lighter option and found it with an appetizer: sticky-finger black pepper tofu! Peppercorn, honey-molasses, butter glazed tempura-fried tofu, served with a delicious Asian slaw ($22). That plus a 4 p.m. double gin and tonic ($12) brought the bill for my late lunch to $35.70 plus a $5 CAD tip. Really impressive service, excellent food, and reasonably priced. Conversation friendly, spacious, and relaxing. I doubt I'll have the chance to return to Jasper (I'm 70 and live in D.C. and my traveling days may be numbered) but if the four winds bring me back, I'll save space for The Whisky Jack Grill. (And I don't mean to be a pest, but according to the venue, there is no "e" in Whisky". Just saying, because that's what's on the postcard they left with my tab.) read more

We really enjoyed our meal at The Whisky Jack Grill in Jasper! The smoked roasted beef brisket was fantastic, and I would definitely order it again! The beef stroganoff special also looked delicious. Service was friendly, and the views of the mountains from inside the restaurant were beautiful! They also had a great local beer selection. We grabbed the blueberry pie to go, and it came with ice cream, so good. We would definitely come back during a future stay in Jasper! read more

Went for breakfast first thing. The place was empty and we were seated in the back room. Decor is dark wood walls, tables, chairs. My breakfast was SO good. Banana Blueberry French Toast! Thick slice of banana bread as French toast with berries. It was delicious! I have got to make this next time I make banana bread. Soooo good! Hubby had a boring eggs bacon toast. Nothing fancy. Terrible food. Ordered the ny strip which was advertised and priced as AAA quality. Was choice cut at best with a lot of gristle and so chewy that even the knife had trouble cutting through it. Also ordered the brisket burger and mezze plate - mediocre at best. Blueberry pie was awful and looks nothing like the pictures. read more

We had a delicious dinner with friends at Whiskey Jacks. Salmon Wellington was the special and it was scrumptious. Our server was lovely and anticipated our every need. To top it off we had the homemade blueberry pie and apple strudel. read more

We ate breakfast here our first morning in Jasper, mostly as it was convenient (part of our hotel's complex) and it opened at 7 a.m. (as far as we could tell, NO place in Jasper opens before 7 a.m., though some open later). So if you are staying at the Tonquin Inn or nearby and want breakfast as early as possible, this isn't a bad choice. The service was good. In fact, we were the first ones there and only one other couple came in while we were eating. I think, based on other observations while we were coming or going, that most of their breakfast trade happens a bit later or in conjunction with large tour buses. The food was fine. There wasn't a big difference between some of the offerings here vs. other places in town. We ate elsewhere for the other 2 mornings mostly as other places may have slightly wider arrays of options and we were not as pressed for time on either of the other days. You could get by eating breakfast here every day. I think they are open all day until 9 p.m. There appeared to be a bar (for later in the day) also. Given the name, one would hope so. read more

We were on a group tour of 35 people. We signed up for our meal ahead of time. The service was pretty fast. The food was very good. My husband and I both had the beef brisket, which was super tasty. And had a delicious gravy to go with it. We had a very nice side salad to start out the meal and some dessert at the end. read more

This restaurant is just one block off the main street in Jasper. They have outdoor seating as well as a nice bar area. They have a $5 happy hour special everyday from 5:30 to 6:30. Beers and wines are offered. I had the soup and fried calamari. The calamari had a very light batter and great sauce. The soup was fresh and homemade. My wife had the schnitzel which came with potatoes and veggies. It was cooked and seasoned just right. The service was terrific and a manager came around to check that everything was OK. read more

Suggested by our guide as a locally owned restaurant that was popular with the people that lived in town, it seemed like a good place to check out. While I love the premise of the place and the home-like decor that exists, this place was ultimately our least favorite experience during our visit. Inexplicably it took forever to get served, while others got seated around us with drinks right away. When the server finally showed up, things improved a bit. The happy hour local beer was an excellent choice. Food however fell incredibly flat. The onion soup was watery, the stilton flatbread was plain.. I could go on. What seemed like tasty food options ultimately were just blah. Walked out feeling disappointed. You can't win anyone over, but there's lots of room for improvement at Whisky Jack's. read more

Went in for breakfast after staying at Inn, after waiting 10+ minutes at the front we got told by this little girl with a disgusting attitude that they've closed and they're unable to fry some eggs. She had an accent for the manager that'll hopefully look at this. She was horrible and a horrible way to start the day, hope she gets a reality check and no one else has to deal with her. read more

This restaurant was in our hotel complex and as we were both very tired decided to have dinner here and were not disappointed. Excellent Covid-19 precautions in place. Our wait staff were very courteous and professional. Even though the menu was not very extensive it was hard to decide what we wanted to eat. I decided on the Teriyaki Grilled Salmon, with grilled asparagus. It came with rice but I was allowed to substitute for mashed potatoes. The entire meal was extremely delicious , cooked to perfection and a very appealing presentation. We also share the tempura shrimp as a started again they were cooked to perfection . There was a small salad on the plate with the shrimp which unfortunately had no dressing with it. read more

We visited Whiskey Jack's twice while staying in Jasper. The first time I had the bison stroganoff while was really tasty. The bison chunks were tender not tough. My husband had a burger and fries. We can back again for the food and good service. read more

Only a 3 star. Service is good. Atmosphere is decent . But hardly any vegan options on the menu and the only 100% vegan dish did not seem appealing at the price, hence my 3 star review . read more
