We have made an evening at the De'd Dog a tradition on our trips to Jasper but last time we went it was disappointing, We went on the wing night special on Wednesday but the wings were small, dry and overly sauced and the Caesar salad was stale and skimpy for the price. Came here at lunchtime on a Saturday and it was absolutely Ded :( There was 1 table occupied on the patio and we were the only ones inside. We ordered the de'd dog hot dog ($10), which is nothing more ordinary than one you'd get at a hotdog stand. The bun was also stale unfortunately. I've stopped in here the last three times I've been in Jasper, and they've never disappointed me. The staff are tremendously friendly and welcoming and there is a good selection of pub grub available on the menu. My personal recommendation is the Buffalo chicken burger. I really enjoyed having it in the pretzel bun. If you have some time it's worth checking out all the cool pictures and memorabilia they have hanging on the walls. This bar/restaurant is right on the main street in Jasper. They check all the boxes for a sports bar. Lots of TV's, pool table and video games. Good selection of beer both local and other wise. They also have a full bar for all your cocktails. We ordered the chicken nachos half order, it was huge. Loaded with cheese, tomatoes, onions and a generous amount of chicken. Cool English bar. Not many selections at that area if you try to eat lunch at 3:00 pm. But this pub is open. They serve food. I saw many people are sitting outside and decide to try without looking up at Yelp. It was surprised me they have good food. I have the shepherd pie with mix of bison, elk and other meat in it. I said I got to try it. It turn out to be a good pie. Well balance on the ingredients with well balance of spice. Softly cook and pleasant to enjoy. It is an "A" on this pie. If you come at 4:20 pm, they have the happy hours items. It very strange happy hour is not happen at the hour. Good size bar with pool table and other game item. Not bad at all at the northern most of the Canadian Rockies. Good service. Not much of big TV screen but good enough to watch a game. read more

We went here on the first night of our Jasper vacation and it set the food bar very high! It was wing night, and I have had my fair share of wings, and I have come to the conclusion that the wings we got here were the best I have ever had. They had the perfect amount of crunch on the outside and were nice and hot on the inside. They also didn't over sauce them. I wish I lived in Jasper so that I could come for every wing night! Our waiter, Theo, was very nice, helpful, and efficient, the beers were delicious, and the atmosphere was pleasant and inviting. The salad was excellent, and the bacon-cheese burger on pretzel bun would likely have been as well except that the beef patties were a little overdone. I was checking into the Astoria Hotel after a wonderful, but long drive from Calgary to Jasper. As I was standing at the front desk getting my keys, I couldn't help but notice the door to my right, which was the entrace to the De'D Dog Bar and Grill. I am a huge animal lover, so I admittedly felt a little disgusted by the name Dead Dog. I tried to pretend I was taking it in stride, but couldnt' resist asking the girl behind the desk why it was called "De'd Dog?" She enlightened me..... Apparently, the current owner was grieving the death of his dog at the time that he purchased this pub. Which is why he called the pub "De'd Dog". Wow... kind of rough around the edges I guess... but I guess it does make a statement and to the owner, likely a tribute of sorts. The girl went on to share with me that there is a picture of his dog in the entranceway, and pictures of many supporters, who have lost their pets. Double wow.... Unfortunately, since this was a 25 hour whirlwind trip, I didn't get the opportunity to eat here, but my dear friend Sheila and I did take the time to stop in and check this place out. The crowd is eclectic, likely because it is was a long weekend in Jasper. As I looked around, I saw people in their late teens and early 20s, also 30's, 40s and up, up, up. This pub does not have a "crowd" per se, or a click. Everyone is welcome. And it is HUGE! When we walked up to the pub from the street, we couldn't help but notice the sign for $6 burger and fries. I have no doubt that is the best bargain on Connaught Drive, which is likely anohter reason it is so popular with all age groups. The pub has a number of big screens, as well as video games such as buck hunter. I also noticed a kiosk for internet in the pub as well. I guess some people would prefer to have a beer while they address email. Clever. As indicated by the Astoria Hotel staff, the walls are full of pictures of mostly people and also of pets, which gives the walls a bit more of a personal feel. It feels like the De'd Dog is a pub with heart. They don't gouge their customers ($6 burger and fries - wicked!!) and also, the pictures and tribute to the owner's dog definately touches a chord with me. read more

My sister and I arrived here roughly around 9:20PM and ordered around 9:30 (we weren't drinking, just looking for dinner). I had ordered a turkey club and my sister the shepherds pie special. 20 minutes later our waitress came back (might I add for the first time since we ordered) and let us know that there wasn't actually any shepherds pie left to be served. To my sisters dismay, she was given a menu and then ordered the bison chilli. Over 30 minutes later we had not seen our waitress again or had been served. We got up and flagged her down and told her we would be leaving as we have waited so long with no update and no food. She didn't seem phased by this and was almost laughing at us and our decision to leave. We then restaurant hopped to three other restaurants who were all no longer serving food at this hour (it is now 10:30PM), so we walked up to Earls only to find out it was closed for a private function. With that, we returned to De'd Dog and requested the manager. When we asked him if he was the manager, he said "sure, I could be". He told us he put up our cheque and that there was nothing they could do. We told him about the other restaurants being closed/not serving and he asked if we wanted to return, but if we did that we "do not bitch". Overall a disappointing first-time dining experience in Jasper and certainly wouldn't recommend the poor service at this place. @JohnTaffert, this place needs you.. bad. Update: since we've been back we have received our food (it took about 20 minutes to get our food) which was brought out by a different waitress and we not been checked on by anyone, almost 40 minutes later since arriving back. Solid beer selection. Decent menu. We started with the bison sliders. Cooked to perfection and the carmalized onions were perfect. This dish was phenomenal a great way to start! Live music certainly doesn't hurt and the staff was very friendly. I had the Reuben sandwich and while the fries are basic fare the sandwich was great. Arrived hot and they are not skimpy on ingredients. The sourerkraut was great and the overall taste was delightful. Everything tasted fresh and made to order. Came here for drinks, it's a decent little bar. Service was fantastic but the cleanliness could definitely be improved. The bathrooms are in need of a deep clean and the hand soap completely turned my stomach. They have a refillable soap which is completely full of bacteria. There are far better places to eat in Jasper than De'd Dog. Our homestay accommodation owner recommended it for its excellent salads, namely the Tuna Kahuna, which is like a salad nicoise with smoked (not seared) tuna. I don't eat tuna, but my father does, and he was unimpressed. The only options for vegetarians are a salad, a quesadilla, their "awesome fries" (which the waiter confessed weren't awesome -- and they weren't), and a veggie burger. Everything comes off a truck (like Sysco), and it wasn't good. I tried an Alexander Keith's White Premium, and it was godforsaken. Historically, I haven't been much of a beer drinker, but over the years -- and particularly through my travel -- I have grown to enjoy particularly local brews. Alexander Keith's, I believe, is from Nova Scotia, so nobody could claim that it's local. Still, it's Canadian, so I ordered it over Bud Light or Coors. Nevertheless, it sucks. It has a pasteurized, stale taste. Not crisp. I'd never order it again. To be fair, the food wasn't awful. It was unexceptional. It was blase. It was uninspired. It was frozen food warmed up in the oven-like. Is Lean Cuisine good? Maybe for $2.49 it is, but not if one is paying for it out in an Irish pub in the middle of a northern Canadian National Park. The waiter was honest. Should have listened and ran. All in all, there wasn't much redeemable about this place. Skip it. While Jasper isn't exactly the culinary capital of the world, L&W's and The Olive, at which we'd previously eaten, were heads and shoulders better. read more

My wife and I had earlier walked by this Pub and spoke to a fellow dining out front eating what appeared to be a burger in a pretzel bun. He declared the burger quite good, so we later returned for supper. We sat outside on the sidewalk patio, browsed the menu which included quite a good selection of appetizers, main dishes, and Daily Specials, a bit better than standard pub fare. Feeling like a basic burger, we both ordered the Pub Burger at a very good (for Jasper) price of $8.95 and I thought the prime rib bone sounded interesting at $3.50. The wait for our meal was a bit long at 40 minutes, and the over-worked waitress apologized saying she had to prepare a large take-out order. The rib was quite good, served with the right amount of barbeque sauce and was reasonable for the price. As to the burger, the pretzel bun was a nice touch, but my 4 oz burger patty was a bit dry as I'm sure it spent more time under the heating lamp than it should have, but my wife thought hers was fine. The real cheddar cheese was a nice addition and there was a good amount of lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle, making this an okay burger. The fries were the highlight as they were crispy and not greasy and perfectly cooked, a very good French fry indeed! So if you're looking for a reasonably priced meal in Jasper, this place is worth a try, but be prepared for some inconsistencies. read more

This is a nice little pub we've visited a few times. The beers and the food are really well priced , and the staff are always super nice and helpful. Really awesome pub grub. A lot of the locals go here and we've ended up chatting with them about all the photos on the wall. Beautiful tributes to locals that have passed on including animals. This is a typical mountain town pub spot. Big long tables with pool, darts and a lot of TVs. We went for drinks with some friends (simple jugs of Kokanee and a few shots) and had a great time. More locals than tourists I'd imagine. Down to earth service. When we were there there was a 3m snow party and a lot of Marmot employees were there celebrating. read more

This is our favourite après ski bar in Jasper for two reasons: They show Habs games (lots of TVs), and they have phenomenal wings! The wings are large, juicy and crispy - they come in a lot of flavours but we always get an order of salt and pepper (seasoned just right), and one order with the fiery jerk sauce on the side. Yum. I should note that an order also comes with the pre-requisite two sticks each of carrots and celery, and ranch or blue cheese dip. We've had other food here (steak sandwich, combo appetizer platter, poutine with real cheese curds, which was good but a little salty) and it's been decent, but in the end it always comes down to wings. Recently I tried a new appetizer - I think it was called a dog bone - for really cheap (like, $3 I think!) you get two large meaty beef ribs that have been grilled with a slightly smoky barbeque sauce. It's a great deal and pretty tasty (even though I don't usually like barbeque sauce). Service is wonky; they often only have one server on the floor. Most of them are pretty efficient but sometimes it's hard to flag them down for the first time. There's a pool table, and also a buck hunter game in the corner, and some couches too. I've only ever been there in the daytime or around suppertime so I can't comment as to its ambiance at night, but usually there are a few groups of people there. Overall, go for the wings! read more

We ordered food there this past week. It started off bad as one person wanted tea. It was served cold. Actually cold. The server said that was what the machine produced. When we pressed it she went back only to find out the hot water wasn't even turned on. Then our food came. All three meals; their nachos (they forgot the chicken) , a club house and a totonka (bison) burger we're bad...the last two inedible. The fries were cold too although the food came out pretty fast? When we showed her the burger which was just burnt meat; you couldn't rip it, she had no response. My clubhouse had an untoasted white subway bun with processed dry turkey they had tried to pan fry. It was appalling. My friend didn't want a scene, unlike me, so we left all the food on the table uneaten, he paid the $65 bill and we exited and went to eat at a Yelp recommended restaurant nearby. We should have been wiser. This place is one of those 'main st' spots where where the old atmosphere is the only thing going for it. If this wasn't a tourist town that place would be closed. read more

The worst service and rudest staff I've ever encountered at a restaurant. We were there as out of towners - purchased hundreds of dollars in alcohol and food - to watch a sports game. We we're minding our own business in a corner of the restaurant at our table - we weren't smack talking and we kept to ourselves. One of the waitresses noticed which team we supported (someone at our table was wearing a jersey) and told us that we were "obnoxious fans", "sore losers", and that we're "f*cking annoying"... in a raised voice. Totally uncalled for, rude, and unprofessional. This used to be our favourite bar in Jasper until today. There were 4 of us at the Ded dog at around 5pm. We spent a fair amount and were having some great conversations until the owner of the location came by and told us we were being too loud. There was literally 10 people there including staff. My friends and I went here on the recommendation of a couple locals. It was my Aussie friend's 25th birthday so the night had to be special. In Jasper, De'd Dog is as special as you can get....and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. It feels like a genuine locals' hangout. The waitress was very nice and encouraged us to eat on the Laze-Z-Boys in the back. The food was good - I think I had pasta and a salad - the beer was cold and the pool table was free when we wanted to play. At the end of the evening we even got a slice of cake with a candle it for our friend! I would definitely recommend this charming hole in the wall. read more

Service was so-so. They got busy and couldn't keep up. We had the Nachos and we expected the white man's pile of chips, cheese and beef stuck in a microwave which is more or less what we got. The problem was that it was a huge pile of chips and not that much else. It was overcooked, too. The first few bites were good, but after that we just gave up. We probably only ate like 25% of it, because it just got boring and our drinks were empty. We also had the "two-bite burger" which was a pleasant surprise. It really is a six bite burger and not a bad deal for $4. It is made with a combo of venison, elk, etc.. That said, if you're going to be playing pool with your buds and basically want a bar experience with some food thrown in, you will probably have more of a four-star experience.
