Unfortunately the first time going here for breakfast was a dud. First ordered a coffee which we never got, and got small water glasses. The waitress took our very simple breakfast which included scrambled eggs and one plate came out with scrambled and the other came out with over easy eggs. Told her and after waiting a few minutes received our second plate with again over easy eggs. I just ate it and was just done by that point. Also ran out of water and not once was asked if I needed a refill. It was just off putting for a place that was not super busy to get so much wrong on such a simple Order. I used to love this place. The food is so awful now and way overpriced. I literally have not been here since the new owners took over. I decided give it another go and was so disappointed. I paid $18.70 for scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, texas toast, and a small grit with cheese. When just over a month ago this same meal would cost me just $12. The lady literally charged me separately for every item which should have been a meal. There was a dead silence in the place and I didn't see not one regular out of the 3 people that dined in. I will not be returning $18.70 down the drain for very salty undercooked beef bacon, bland undercooked grits that wasn't hot enough to melt the shredded cheese, salty soggy texas toast. They're open, great news! Had a nice time reading bits and pieces of newspaper snippets about there past. All the way back to 1940!! Talk about nostalgia and being taken back to simpler times. The waitress was very nice. I wasn't hungry so I ordered something simple. My husband had biscuits and gravy and he loved it. My mom had French toast and two pieces of bacon. My advice to them when business picks up and things get better, please invest in sugar alternatives for those who do not use regular sugar or Sweet'N Lo. For example: Stevia or Monk Fruit. Although I would be happy with Splenda. So not being able to drink a cup of coffee with a better sugar alternative was a little sad. But I'll survive and I hope "The Whip" survives as well. The other great thing was that my elderly mom was able to pick up the check and it was South of $20 for three people with tip. She was so pleased. She said oh wow, that's good. read more

On Tuesday 8-15-23 around noon a single employee was running the whole restaurant and she had been there since 4am, this is an example of hard work for young people. Took the family to The Whip this evening for din din. We were seated immediately as the place wasn't full. I was expecting a long-standing establishment such as this to be busy on a Friday night. Our waitress was friendly and she quickly took our drink orders. I ordered a root beer and liver and onions for dinner, which came with a salad. Actually, I let my daughter order for me, and she chose liver and onions. It was pretty good...all liver tasting and such. I haven't had liver and onions since I was a kid, but it appeared to have been cooked well. It was a thin slice, I'll bet, because liver has a strong iron flavor. I finished it, but I probably won't let my daughter order liver and onions for me anywhere again. I'm hoping I got some kind of health benefit from it. I got a side of mashed potatoes, which came with gravy too. They were tasty. No beer - bummer. The side salads could use a little sprucing up too. We sat next to the pay phone, which not only works, but they use it. There were at least two incoming calls while we were there that the waitress took while leaning over our booth. Interesting, but not unusual in a 76-year stronghold. My family said their food was good. The meal went pretty quick, which was nice because we wanted to get home for the Cavs game! The 1 star is not due to the food since I could not get what I wanted - but rather for the circumstance this place is in. They have had chicken paprikash for what seems like forever on Thursday. Not anymore - they now close at 2pm most days (including Thursday) and since the lunch crowd does not order as much as the dinner crowd the last time it was made when the hours changed most got thrown out and they cannot continue to throw away money anymore. They are now closed on Tuesday due to lack of business. The time may have come to say goodbye to a place that has been a mainstay for so long .. what a shame .. read more

Extremely fast service and subsequent arrival of food. It was 6:45am. I ordered their largest breakfast combo which included two eggs, two pieces of bacon, home fries, and white toast. I also ordered a glass of whole milk. It was all delicious and high quality. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon was particularly good. As a few mentioned, technically it could use a few remodeling updates. However, if this was completed, I'm quite sure my excellent breakfast would cost more than $7.83. Went here for breakfast this morning. Waited 20 minutes before a waitress/cook approached my table and that was only because I raised my hand, asking to be served. Order taken, and food arrived 30 minutes later minus bacon and toast, which the waitress/cook said would be right out. Neither made it to the table, so I left enough money to cover what I ordered on the table and walked out. I don't understand how The Whip expects to provide a good customer experience when it is doomed from the start. The waitresses take the orders and then they cook the food. Well this was my disappointment of the week... I haven't been here for a few years, maybe 5. I remember coming here couple decades ago when it was a cute little memorable place that was always full of people and great food and just a pleasure. Today was no pleasure. I remember 5 to 8 years ago it was already looking quite bad, shabby, in need of repair and paint and dirty. Still very bad. And I reckon that the ceiling that was bad years ago finally came down and they did the most horrible repair you've ever seen. I went to order what I wanted and the first eight things I wanted they didn't have so I ended up with two chicken breasts mashed potatoes and gravy with a side salad. The lettuce and two sliced cuke pieces were the salad with extremely huge pcs I had to cut and cut. The gravy tasted tainted and the pieces of chicken tasted funny and I left most everything. Just saying it's not what it once was. I know that they were open in the 40s or 60s but I think their time has come and gone. I was way beyond disappointed and unhappy and left hungry. Yes, it's old. But here's the deal. In this stretch of Pearl Road for about a mile each side of the Whip are a lot of fancy hoity toity eateries. Not counting the fast food places, the fancy places all turn over about every five years. Some of them have been opened and reopened 4 or 5 times, and then they go under. The Whip has been there since the 40's and under this owner since the 70's and nothing has changed. So while all the other Pearl Rd places change every few years this is the same and still in business. So something is done right. So, throwback decor, throwback settings, plain fare, but good, it is a real nice place to get a decent meal at a decent price. For the hoity toity places, (and I go there, too) try up and down the road. read more

I love mom and pop shops but this place needs a good cleaning and the food is incredibly bland. Would not recommend, I also have witnessed what I think is the head boss lady being incredibly terrible to the employees, cussing at them and throwing a tantrum. I decided to drop in on my old friend, The Whip. It was one of the worst meals in my life. I had the fried chicken dinner. First the soup was a mushroom cream, right out of the can and cold. One piece of chicken was raw in the middle. Love biting into a raw piece of chicken. One other piece was burnt, I was scared to try the other two. Baked potato was raw, sour cream was spoiled. I had a soft drink that felt like it came from the bottom of the tank, asked for it to be replaced, got the same drink back. Truly, a bad experience, never going back. Just visited with my kids. It's been a few years since the last time. I remember it being outdated and needing some cleaning back then. Still true. Ceiling is peeling in places, decor is decades old and tired. They have their loyal clientele, and on a weekday evening, they had a few tables going. I guess that's why they aren't motivated to clean and remodel. Business is going "well enough" I think. I don't want you to think it was disgusting. More like - cobwebs in corners and dust on window sills and blinds. Service was friendly. Value was good. Kids meals are more than fair in quality and price. My hot sandwich was very good. I'd love to see them remodel and pack the place out. It's a nice location and has old school charm from the outside. I even think the 1950s wood paneling on the inside has a coziness. We gotta do something about all the vinyl overload. I'm not talking LPs. Walls, booths, blinds, and table covers. read more

I went here for breakfast with my best friend. We were the youngest people in here by at least 35 years. It had a very old-fashioned feel to it with the old booths, a pay phone, and old cash register. The food was a typical good American one with eggs, bacon, home fries, and toast. It was also very cheap, costing less than $5 a meal. Tasty food, friendly staff, cool atmosphere. I will definitely be returning! read more

It takes a lot for me to post a derogatory review of a restaurant, but the public (as well as the owners) need to know. This was the worst meal I've ever had, ever. Ordered the ribs, they were leather and ketchup/lowest tier sauce in the world poured over top. The salad was iceberg lettuce, that's all, just iceberg. The bread was days old. The homefries came in a bath of butter. According to my 8 yr old son, they seemed to have made a decent pancake however, so there's that. There's a reason the place was completely barren on a Saturday evening... because that night we were the victims. read more

This is an old style greasy spoon diner. The restaurant doesn't look like its been updated since they added push buttons to pay phones! The décor is right out of 1971 with red vinyl table cloths. Came here last night for a late dinner with my husband. I was a bit confused because on google it keeps coming up as a coffee shop. We were seated instantly as it was not crowded. While it might deter some, I really liked the vintage look inside. I had a French dip and my husband got the hot roast beef sandwich. My French dip was ok but just didn't have a lot of flavor and came with crinkle fries which I am not a huge fan of. My husband's looked great though and he said it was good. A trip down memory lane! Food was good. service was exceptional. This was the "upscale" place to "dine" for a special date in High School (50+ yrs ago) compared to McD's. The nostalgic 50's decor is warm and comforting. The chairs looked worn, but were clean as were the tables. Coffee is average diner fare, but tasted really great in a thick ceramic mug. Our hamburgers were not overly salted, neither were the fries (possibly frozen, but cooked to non greasy perfection). We stopped there on a whim while running an errand in the area (we live about 35 miles away). My very picky husband was curious to see this place, part of my teen years, gave it two thumbs up, and has suggested we have special dates at this very charming "diner". read more

I would like to thank your "awesome" short order cook for starting an unnecessary argument because she made my food incorrect. I ordered your Ruben Sandwich which traditionally is rye bread, corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing. What I received was a sloppy Roast Beef sandwich which consisted of rye bread, white american, roast beef, and sauerkraut. I also ordered a delicious glass of flat sprite that tasted like dirt. My family talked so highly of this place before I decided to go. Shame on your staff for giving such poor customer service. The food is fantastic. The decor is dated, an understatement, but has charm in how old it is. The service was friendly and well-paced. Several of us had the chicken and dumplings soup, which was excellent. The dumplings had to be homemade. The chili dog was just outstanding. I've enjoyed quite a few from different places, and this chili dog is really good - the chili is just right for a hot dog, meat and beans seasoned nicely. Average food, average service. I had breakfast. Just wanted eggs and toast. The breakfast special comes with eggs, toast and potatoes. Did not want the potatoes, but they will not take any money off if you don't order the potatoes. so you will pay for the potatoes whether you take them or not. I was not told that. So I get charged for potatoes even though they didn't give me any. I did want an extra egg and a slice of toast which they charge me a whole breakfast price for. If there was a no star rating this place would get it! How do you screw up a simple breakfast order? My wife ordered corned beef hash and it was cold, toast was soggy, their coffee was the worst swill I have ever tasted. On top of that my son ordered chicken strips (4 of them)for 6.25 they were gross and didn't even come with fries. When I questioned the waitress why the chicken strips didn't come with anything else she told me nope and if you want them you can order them , with a very snarky attitude.
