This place isn't for everyone. If you choose price over quality, you'll think it's ridiculously overpriced. If you don't value the difference between well-prepared food and bad, you'll also balk. My in-laws would have hated it: "They want me to pay $11 for three eggs, bacon, home fries and toast?!?! I can get a dozen eggs for $2.50 and a pound of bacon for $3.50 at Aldis..." My sister thinks of food as fuel. She's fine with breakfast at McDonalds, or whatever diner is closest to where she's staying. She'll also microwave a can of hash and a frozen omelet. Her husband is always dieting; he'd say the portions are too big. If you like to eat-- and you care about what you eat-- Southside diner is pretty wonderful. Everything is made from scratch. Portions are large. The recipes are flavorful and uniquely spiced (even the coffee is from a local roaster). This has positives and negatives; you might or might not agree with the decisions made in a recipe. For example, the "breakfast tacos" contain fried eggs, chorizo, red onion, pepper jack cheese, pineapple, chipotle sauce & cilantro (the last one means I can't touch it-- cilantro tastes like soap to me). On the other hand, I love their take on corned beef hash. Also, if this matters (not everyone cares) the pancake batter is different than the waffle batter. Because the kitchen is enormously busy, they get enough practice with unusual orders that they can deliver many things other diners whiff on. Like your eggs over medium or poached? No problem. They know how to make hollandaise, too. We enjoy having breakfast, so we can't speak to the burgers or salads. The four soups we've tried have all been good-to excellent. We often get a sandwich or two to go. The things that cost them a star : They're almost always really busy, so it can be difficult attracting the attention of a server is you need something, or something went wrong. The buttering of the toast is erratic. And, while I understand the need to make a profit, the cost of some of the add-one are high. 75 cents to add onions (not grilled) to an omelet? $3 to add blueberries or chocolate chips to your pancakes? Ouch (Strawberries or bananas I get.) It's still worth the trip. And the cost. read more

This cute little mom and pop diner did not disappoint! We both ordered omelettes they were delicious and very plentiful size portions for the omelettes & potatoes. The service was friendly and efficient. The menu really had a lot of choices on it, more than I expected plus they have daily specials. What was really extra bonus nice is that I am very mobility challenged and use a Rollator walker. When we got outside, a young man named Johnathan from inside in the kitchen had come out to help me and he kindly help me get down the curb and put my walker in the car. A friend and I get together for lunch once or twice a week, and more often than not, we end up at Southside. It is a small place with classic diner style and clever art that festures Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Elvis. A friend and I split the chocolate chip waffle to start. This was a seriously good waffle. The batter was tasty with vanilla and a little cinnamon flavor and the waffle was soft. I got two potatoe pancakes which came with eggs and sausage. The potato pancakes were fine. They were creamy and had green onions inside. They were a little too soft for my liking. I was grateful they had turkey sausage patties. My friend for the gyro potatoe skillet. The lamb was shaved and a little overcooked. Tender juicy corned beef and sauerkraut with Swiss cheese and egg sandwiched between a grilled tortilla. Yum. Served with Chipotle Mayo or Thousand Island. Fountain drinks. The real standout here is the fantastic service. Not stressed just really friendly, efficient and attentive. We stayed a bit when we were done eating and chatted with the servers. Truly nice folks. I'm not sure of the nationality of the owners, but this diner has the best of Clevelands' own style of food. The bathroom could use a little deeo clean, but there was toilet tissue, hot water, and soap, so im glad about that! You guys know that I'm a breakfast type of girl, and I believe a diner/restaurant should be able to make 2 things well A burger. Eggs. If you can't do those two things, just close up shop!!! I ordered the Crazy 8, 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 slices of french toast or pancakes. I substituted provolone cheese instead of American, and I believe she (I don't recall my server telling me her name) charged me $1 for the exchange and didn't say anything. I also added the hashbrowns, which were very good, and the bacon was COOKED. You know how some places cook the bacon just enough? No, this bacon was cooked to a crisp perfection, and that's the reason I'm not tripping about the lack of notification for the charge of a substituted cheese. I don't know what magic potion is used to create the Hollandaise sauce, but I think I could have had a bowl of it on the side. It's hard for me to find the separation between a good and a great breakfast/brunch spot until now. There are a handful of good breakfast/brunch places in the area and then there is Southside Diner. I have finally found a great breakfast/brunch spot and it's very close to home. I would eat here everyday if I could. I ordered the breakfast burrito and substituted the bacon with chorizo. I was feeling extra hungry so I decided to order a chocolate waffle as well. The burrito was loaded with sausage, chorizo, egg, cheese, home fries and topped with sausage gravy and cheese. It was very heavy and I enjoyed every bit of it. I'm typically not a big fan of waffles but I was told they were the best around. I can strongly say that this was the best waffle I have ever eaten. It was perfectly cooked, crisp and soft on the inside and every bite was full of chocolate chips. This diner gives off a quality, home cooked meal atmosphere. The food came out fresh and quick. We had a couple of hours to kill waiting on a recall repair on my car so we went to SD for the first time. Pleasantly surprised. Old school diner feel, my booth had tape on the well-worn seat! The menu is widely varied. Open from 8-2 so I had the corn beef hash and eggs (3) over easy my better half had the Ruben. As good as any Ruben in CLE had to bring 1/2 home. My CBH was the best I've had! None of mine made it into a to-go box. The hostess and waitstaff were excellent. The whole experience was a nice surprise. The only negative was my car did not get fixed. Ganley needs to order another part. So I will be out of my bubble again when the part comes in and stopping in at Southside Diner before Christmas!!! read more

This was our second time there, first time not too good, we thought we would give it another try. Extremely disappointed, our bill was slightly over $32.00 for the two of us (without the tip) for breakfast with coffee. My husband ordered the Meat Lovers omelet, very dry even with the melted cheese in it. The hashbrowns were dry as well, had absolutely no flavor, our toast was barely toasted with loads of butter, which did not melt into it. I literally had to scrape off the excess butter. I ordered the 3 eggs, requested soft basted, two were almost hard boiled, the other almost there, sausage patties were dry, overcooked. We don't go out too often for a breakfast, this was supposed to be a treat, far from it. The server was very friendly as well as another who took our order.
