We recently experienced one of the most heartbreaking moments a pet owner can face, and the team at the Vet Hospital on River Road in Eugene walked beside us every step of the way with a level of compassion and kindness that words can scarcely express. Our sweet Teddy, a 14-year-old terrier mix who had always been full of spirit and puppy-like joy, had suddenly fallen ill. Just two weeks prior, he was his usual energetic self, bounding around the house as if age had no hold on him. When we brought him to the clinic, we hoped for a simple explanation. What we received instead was devastating news: Teddy had aggressive lymphomic cancer that had quickly spread throughout his body. Dr. Shelton was the one who gently, respectfully, and clearly delivered the news that no pet parent ever wants to hear. He showed a deep sense of empathy--not just for Teddy, but for us as well. He explained everything with honesty and patience, giving us room to process and ask questions without ever making us feel rushed. From the moment we stepped into the clinic, every staff member made a painful situation just a little more bearable. Our vet tech, Hope, was incredibly gentle and present, offering silent support and care that meant more than she'll ever know. And Debbie, who greeted us at the front desk, was such a bright, calming presence. Her genuine warmth and kindness in our time of need helped soothe the ache in our hearts, even if just for a moment. Once it became clear that there were no viable treatment options and that Teddy was suffering, Dr. Shelton walked us through the process of letting him go--with reverence and sensitivity that honored our boy's life. He explained every step with clarity and care, allowing us space and time to say goodbye, and treated Teddy with the utmost respect and tenderness in his final moments. We may have left the clinic without Teddy that day, but we carried with us the comfort of knowing he was cared for with love and dignity. In those final moments, he was surrounded by kindness. If I could give less stars I would. Not only will we never take our animals there again, but I recommend that you don't either. This place has been awful to work with. They have been rude, condescending, insinuating that we are lying about the medication that we have been receiving and recommending less than effective medication (which ultimately cost us hundreds of dollars). We personally had to research our own treatment options. They had culture tests set aside for us and gave them to other patients then they waited until we showed up with our 4 animals to our appointment to tell us they didn't have the tests. They told us they would contact us when new tests arrived and one month later, they never did. Again.. zero stars. read more

I cannot recommend this hospital if you need to euthanize your pet. Our experience was awful. The doctor gave our cat a shot of sedative right into her stomach. My cat cried out and tried to bite the vet. Then she seized, threw up and went limp. The vet then fumbled around trying to find a vein without shaving the leg, but just squirting alcohol on the leg. The vet tried the back leg and then the front. They gave up and administered the drug straight into the heart. This was not humane by any standard. We were traumatized by the suffering of our cat. The rest of the staff was compassionate and competent. When we talked to the owner, she said this was standard procedure and said she would talk to the vet. My husband and I have witnessed euthanasia before. Our cats were purring right up until they died. This was just wrong. read more

I am SO impressed by this animal hospital. Everyone I spoke to on the phone and in person were so incredibly kind and caring and really took their time with me and my pet. They went above and beyond and were so personable and friendly. They also checked in with me over the phone while my little kitten was coming out of surgery and answered all my questions and gave me an update. Most of all I felt safe dropping my kitten off with them. They had great options for the surgical care as well. I feel like she healed super quickly because i added the "Cold laser" option. The pharmacy they partner with is really close as well and make it convenient if you have a prescription to take home. Will definitely be making this my vet! read more

Some time ago I took my dog for his vaccinations, the vet Tex was rude, wouldn't listen to my request to mussel the dog because he was becoming difficult to hold and I was afraid he might nip myself, the vet tex or the vet, till I had to raise my and insist they provide a mussel, on top of that, before the vet even saw the dog, I was presented with an estimate for things I had not requested, it was a total "upsell". I'd been using this vet clinic for years, but no more. If you want to spend outrageous amounts if money on sub par care, this is the place. I came for my free visit. Kitten had weepy eyes. Got antibiotic. Didn't work, called up and they gave another. Mind you, at the time of visit I ASKED if it was possible that it was kitty clamidia, and she said no way. (Confirmed by another vet) Antibiotics didn't work and they recommended a culture. Now I'm $200 into this and ask if a tech can take a sample for the $140 test? No. I will have to pay for a $90 visit. On this goes until I've spent $450. No answer. Then my husband rushes our other cat in, he's having trouble breathing. They do an xray, ask if they can put him down and charge $550. And they NEVER ASK him if he wants to say goodbye before they do it. HORRIBLE. IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD. read more

Be cautious with this place: Vet Nancy Johnson has been fairly knowledgeable, but we were quoted a week's delay in having our cat see her. Available right away was Vet Berman. However, she hadn't a clue in solving the problem and offered to "try all sorts of remedies at once." She ended up giving us two meds [$169 for one, no warning] which our cat would not take no matter what. A poor showing. We later started him on CBD oil and he improved right away. Very happy with all the staff! My cat Boo was vomiting, not eating or going to the bathroom for almost 2 days. We took her to the 24 emergency vet that kept her overnight. The next morning they called and told me to come get Boo and she's in worse shape. They called The Vet Hospital who was able to get her in first thing. I hadn't established a vet here since moving from Seattle last Spring so I was really nervous about her getting good care. To my surprise and satisfaction Dr. Nancy Johnson to the rescue. She did surgery right away on Boo to see if what the X-rays showed as possible string needed to be removed. Turns out she had a swollen lymph node. Boo came home that night and from all the sedation at both hospitals, she was still vomiting but worse. My panic level was insanely high!! I called the next morning and they said to bring her in. Dr. Nancy advised she's nauseous and gave her a shot which worked miracles. The best part is she gave me her cell in case I was concerned about Boo and her recovery while they were closed. Instant relief for a panicked fur mama!!! The entire staff is friendly and caring, I couldn't be more happy with Boos new doctor. She called and followed up to check on my Boo as well. If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is terrible and will nickel and dime you for everything. I've spent over 1,000 on treatments that could have been prevented if they would have listened to me from the beginning. The tech laughed in my face when I told them I thought my puppy had a UTI. Turns out she did and went 3 weeks untreated because they didn't listen to me. I then had to pay $700 in vet bills to try and get the UTI gone that led to an almost kidney infection. We have been very lucky to have Dr. Liz Gray DVM as our vet at The Veterinary Hospital. She is wonderful! She watches and takes care of our three dogs. She amputated our Blue Heller's leg when he had cancer and he is doing very well being a 12 years old. She also did invasive surgery on our 13 year old Black Lab Pointer Mix and he is doing wonderful. We also appreciate the supportive staff at the clinic. The staff is warm and funny when you need that. Thank you! I highly recommend Dr. Liz Gray and the clinic to take care of your animals. Dr. Andrea Duvall - is also amazing. She has worked with our Blue Heller on a weekly basis for the last fews months. She is patient and explains things clearly. We are very luck to have Dr. Liz Gray & Dr. Andrea Duvall taking care of our animals. The third dog is a Mexican rescue and is health and learning how to behave thanks to Dr. Liz Gray. read more

We are new in town and were referred to The Veterinary Hospital by a friend. Our kitten was sick and I was really worried. I called and they made the earliest appointment possible. They even called to have me come in earlier when they had an appointment cancellation. We had Nancy Johnson, DMV. She was wonderful, as were the rest of the staff that we saw that day. They are all about selling whatever products they get kickbacks on vs the well being of your pet. Took my 15 year old dog in because she started trembling. The vet drew blood to do some tests on. When the vet came back with the results i was handed a paper with a different dog's name on it. When I pointed that out, instead of redoing the test she scribbled out the dogs name and wrote my dog's name instead. Excuse me?!? I don't even think these are my dog's results. Then, the vet points to one of the results and says "don't pay attention to that result, our machines broken" After that it was straight to upwelling - did I know about their loyalty program? Prescription service or wellness plans? They're too focused on getting their patients money and not focused on quality healthcare. After being a patient for 9 years, I'm done. read more

I was absolutely SHOCKED at how I was treated at this vet. I have had many, many animals in my day and been to a lot of vets, but this was by far the most unbelievable! My pet rat was suffering with an inoperable tumor. We made the very difficult decision to have her put to sleep. We called countless vets in the Eugene/Springfield area to find one we were comfortable with. I am a former vet tech and I know the absolutely awful, lazy, and painful way that most vets euthanize small animals and wanted to avoid this at all costs. I called The Veterinary Hospital MULTIPLE times prior to our appointment to make sure that my rat would be put to sleep with gas BEFORE being injected with the euthanizing chemical. I have done research and it is very painful if they are not under when this is done. That is why they put all cats and dogs under before doing this. It is PAINFUL. Plain and simple. I was assured over and over and over that she would be put under before this happened. When we got there, the staff at the front desk was very kind and understanding. However, when the vet, Dr. Johnson (the owner) came into the room I was beyond SHOCKED at what she chose to say to me. As I'm sitting there crying and saying goodbye to my pet, she comes in and announces her presence by saying, "Well, it looks like the end of the road for ole Lucy, huh?" I have NEVER in my life heard something more inconsiderate, rude, and plain stupid in my life. I can't even begin to fathom someone with an ounce of common sense saying that to a grieving person. It was so awful I just glared at her. I couldn't even speak I was so mad. She walked over, took Lucy from my arms, and took her over to the table. I assumed she was going to simply do the pre-check which is required. Instead, the next thing I know she's telling me I may hear her squeak as the needle goes in. Before I could say anything, she stabbed my Lucy with the needle containing the euthanizing chemical WITHOUT PUTTING HER UNDER FIRST!! Had I fully understood what was being done I would have stopped her and walked out right then. When I questioned her about it, she simply brushed me off by saying "I've done a thousand of these." Not only did she do this in a manner I blatantly expressed that I did not want to happen, she also didn't even ask me if i was ready or tell me what was about to happen. She just took her from me. How is it possible that a vet, and an OWNER, no less can do something like that? I was told by over 4 people over the phone that she would be put to sleep with gas. That was the sole reason we chose this place. I was blatantly lied to and my poor baby had to be in pain her last few moments. Just because it paralyzes them, does NOT mean it does not hurt as it slowly absorbs into their system. If it did not hurt the animal at all, then they wouldn't bother putting every single other animal under before doing this. But because my pet wasn't large enough, Dr. Johnson didn't care. She did what she wanted despite what I wanted. I would absolutely never go back to this place. It made me sick just to have to go back and pick up Lucy's ashes. I have never been more astounded with the level of unprofessionalism and inconsideration as I have been at The Veterinary Hospital. All of my in-laws go to this vet and recommended it to me. They were absolutely shocked to hear what happened and we will all be taking our business elsewhere. I hope people who read this follow our lead. read more

Note that most of the positive reviews are in the distant past. The receptionists at The Veterinary Hospital take rudeness to a new level. The waiting times are obscene for any of the vets - we tried most of them. You will wait, on average, 30 minutes at least for your scheduled appt. And worst of all? The vets we have seen in the past six months seem only to care about getting you to buy goods and services that your furbaby does not really need. They seem to care about $$$$, not your animal anymore. Just come sit in the waiting room and just listen to how the reception staff talks to people on the phone and in person - awful. Find a better place to take your family member. They do not care about animals or people at this place anymore. read more

I brought my pets here for 8 plus years. No more. This last experience was too much for me to handle. My dog Heidi was diagnosed by them with end stage kidney failure. We were told the bad news in the public waiting area. Then we were sold very expensive food and sent on our way. I set up B vitamin shots for Heidi. The reminder call had our other dogs name. I told the staff to please correct the name. They said they would. The day came just 10 days after the diagnosis that I knew it was time to have our sweet girl put to sleep. I called her vet and was told they were too busy to make a house call. 2 hrs later a staff member called to let me know the special order dog food was in. I told her we were having Heidi put to sleep and no longer needed the food. A few days later we got a sympathy card for our very much alive 5yr old husky. We called and complained that they needed to fix their records. Then on what would have been Heidi's 14th birthday we got a "Happy birthday Heidi!" Ecard. They couldn't even be bothered to remember her name. read more

I took my husband's and my 8-week old puppy in here today to begin her standard puppy vaccination series. I chose this hospital as it is very close to home and convenient after I read reviews online. I'm very happy with the quality of the hospital and the employees and vets. Liz Gray helped us and she was super kind and knowledgeable. She was very patient and answered all of our questions we had been wanting to ask her. They even threw in a free toenail trim for our puppy and a sample of some flea and heartworm medication. We ended up purchasing one of their puppy packages since I want to make this our vet home. read more

After having such a good vet in Denver I was worried we wouldn't find a place that was as affordable with the same sort of mentality for treating the pet versus making a ton of money off of you. We originally came to this office because our dog's regular vet was out if town. Our dog seemed to have hurt his back leg and needed it check out. We were seen immediately, didn't have a wait for our appointment time, and had all of our questions/concerns addressed. We decided to stay with them after this appointment. Our dog just had his teeth cleaned and was microchipped by them. They called to let us know he'd done well after the procedure and went over his "go home" instructions when we picked him up. The front desk staff is very nice and helpful. The vet techs are very knowledgable and informative. The vets are thorough and have a great "bedside manner". read more

I do see some of the negative reviews but I must say my experience has been WONDERFUL! We have 2 young cats & catching them for vet appointments ain't always so easy. I've been SUPER ACCOMMODATED with time slots & have received AWESOME care from Dr. Albactin (I'm probably spelling the name incorrectly). The gals at the front desk are GODDESSES! We also have an older cat I'm looking forward to bringing in for shots.... I was genuinely shocked to see the negative reviews after my highly positive encounters. We have been taking Spike here for 15 years. Everyone is very kind and he has had wonderful care.

When we moved here (from Michigan), we had to find a new vet. I called them and they seemed really nice on the phone, and they're right down the street from us. So, I set up appointments for my elderly dog and his two kitty sidekicks. They had no problem with us bringing ALL of them in at the same time. Everyone there is so friendly and gentle with the animals. I would recommend this vet to anyone. My only gripe (and it's barely relevant) is that they are always out of my dog's flea meds. But they do such an awesome job, not having meds on-hand doesn't justify a lower rating. read more

This place is awesome! I have been to a number of Veterinary Hospitals and this has been my best experience so far. My visit was less then $70 for the office visit and all my cat's shots. The best part of this visit was the Doctor. She was so sweet with my kitty and showed genuine interest in his wellbeing. This was also the first Vet that hasn't guilted me into crazy expensive dental cleanings, she actually suggested I use my finger to brush his teeth. We established with this Veterinary Clinic when we got our boxer two years ago. Since then, they have cared for our two dogs with skill and compassion. We have been impressed with each doctor we have met. This is a clinic that understands the pet owner as well as the pets and we have always appreciated the help we have recieved from them. My Yorkie is just recovering from being spayed and came through with no trouble. Because of her age and size, I was very worried about her surgery but the doctor took extra time with me to show me why this was an important thing to do for the health of my pet. My animals have been receiving care here since the the early 1970's when Stan Blinkhorn was the vet and he was located on River Avenue. Apparently, I'm very satisfied or I never would have used them for this long. Today, Nancy Johnson is our vet and she is great. So great with our pets, compassionate and knowledgeable. The front office staff has changed over the years, but always have been and still are friendly and they make you feel like you're part of the family. I admit that I briefly went elsewhere in order to try to save money, but it overall wasn't worth it and I'm back for good now......because we'll always have animals (rescues) in our lives. While I think that Dr. Lisa Paquette is very qualified, I will never set foot in her verinary hospital again. I drove 75 miles in heavy traffic which caused me to be five minutes late for my appointment. Once arriving, I had to wait ten minutes for someone at the counter to assist me as both persons were busy helping others. By the time that they were able to help me, they told me that there was not enough time for the Dr. to do the adjustment on my dog. read more

I am new to the area and took my 4 year old dog here for his first get-to-know-you exam and vaccination. Dr. Johnson came into the room and barely acknowledged me. She asked me ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about my dog. Did not take a history, did not even check his eyes. I had given the vet tech information about what I wanted my dog examined for. When Dr. Johnson finished with the vaccination, she said goodbye and started leaving the room. I had to catch her on the way out the door to finish the exam I was there for. She also tried to sell me on several products the clinic carries. I felt her to be very uninterested in my dog or why I brought him in. A waste of money. I've been going to the Veterinary Hospital for several years now for my three cats; I've always received the warmest welcome and wonderful care; last year one of my kitties had a stroke and I took him to Dr. Nancy to see what could be done; Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for my Joey so Dr Nancy sent us over to Springfield to the Specialist there; I had almost fainted (had to lay down on Dr. Nancy's office floor) she had two of her assistants drive me and my kitty to the Springfield. office. I had to have me precious Joey put down there, but, Dr. Nancy and her assistants were so very concerned for me as well as for Joey; I cannot thank them enough; hooray for such caring, loving people read more

All they care about is your money, not you or your pet. In fact, they'd prefer to get their lab fees every month than refill a prescription. Oh, dont bother trying to save money getting your prescriptions filled online. This doctor refused to approve a prescription for life-saving thyroid medicine for my cat because I took it to another pharmacy. The doctor wanted $38 for the same exact medicine that I could get from another pharmacy for $19. They also are trying to extort $249 a month out of me to run a monthly blood test before they will approve another month of medication. The doctor also gives you a song and dance about how its too costly to send out for just a thyroid test or just a kidney test so they must bundle it and run a full $249 panel EACH MONTH. Then, after I agree to the higher priced bundle, I find out they have the lab on their premises, so the 'bundle' of tests is complete BULL! What a disgusting person, this doctor is. read more

i've been very pleased with care and service at tvh. my 20 yo teacup poodle, nicole, was put to sleep there in jan 2009, my pomeranian, max, has been a patient there since adoption in jan 2010. the drs. and staff are very friendly and professional. we like going there because we are among animal loving, caring people. putting nicole down was traumatic for me; i was grateful to be with friendly professionals. thank you. read more

I have a small dog with special needs. I was looking for a clinic that was top of the line. Fixed up with the latest equipment and the staff to be current on their knowledge of veterinary care. I got that all that and more! After one visit I promptly turned all my animals over to their care. Have not regretted or questioned myself for doing this. Dr. Johnson is FABULOUS! As is Dr. Paquette! Really all the drs are great. I've seen them all. They truly care about your pets. They've fit me in emergency situations, they've given me hope and strength when the other vets just wanted to kill my dog because it had issues. They said my dog wouldnt make it a year. That just shows how horrible the rest were. My dog is over 2 years old and I have no reason to think he won't have a long life. Dr. Johnson and Paqette do everything in their power to keep him as healthy as possible so that he can continue to bless me with his love. Best vet clinic ever!!! read more

I took my beloved dog there for surgery a couple of weeks ago....She had bladder stones....They gave her an exam and did tests to check her health condition...everything looked good...My dog was a small dog 17 lbs.. She was under anesthesia for alittle over an hour before she began to have trouble....she had cardiac arrest and then they tried to revive her...My dog died on the table!!! They called me on the phone and said bad news your dog just passed away...they said it happens sometimes...ive been completely devasted and in shock!! My baby was a very happy and healthy dog...she loved life!! They said they thought she was going to make it...they didn't charge me for the surgery....i think they were negligent...She had bladder stone surgery alittle over a year ago and made it through....They should be looking at my dogs health history...i told them about her previous surgery performed at another vets office....The vet was rude and hostile when we dropped our dog off for surgery that morning....we didnt have time to put it off because she had a blockage and couldn't urinate....i cant believe this happened to me and my precious baby..she was 8 yrs old and was healthy with no obvious health conditions.....im.very concerned and i dont trust this hospital with my other dogs....this experience has scarred me and they took away my heart and soul from me...she was a very special dog....i think they were hiding something about the surgery and are suspicious.....they had her under anesthesia for along time and use strong and powerful drugs to put them under....she was a small 17lbs dog....she would be alive if they didnt keep her under for so long.....they keep them under for however lomg it takes them....i think they were taking way too long and caused my dog to have a heart attack....i think people should be aware of this and vet hospitals should be looking out for animals survival....they are educated and work with animals everyday and this shouldn't happen....dogs dont die for no reason.....they are responsible for my dogs death.....im so disgusted and cant believe i trusted them with my dog....i will never go to this hospital again.......ever..... read more
