The fish was all very obviously re-fried from pre-fried and so were the fries and onion rings. Everything was tasted freezer burnt. We ate what we could because we were hungry and don't trust sending food back that comes out not good the first time. I love this atmosphere, but this is the second chance we gave it and as like the first time a year ago, we all got sick again. Something going on with the food storage and/or prep back there. Can't even say the drinks were good, as my standard cocktail was lacking the alcohol in every way that matters, especially flavor - which means they skimped, it wasn't even the right color. Not happy, just grossed out, again. We are local and gave this a second chance, not going back again. Word to the readers from a local if you are looking for a good pub meal - Mulligan's. Parents had the fish and chips, calamari and French onion soup. The fish was crispy and well made and the chips were yummy. Union Underground is actually underground. But they also have amazing outdoor seating. This is an underground restaurant and bar that just happens to be kid friendly. I only say that because I saw it for myself! In other words, their staff were so friendly I almost thought I wasn't going to make it out of there. They were noticeably friendly and informative. I received a lecture about appetizers and I loved it! To start off I had Cheesesteak Egg Rolls and Maple Thai Chili Chicken Wings. The wings were cooked perfectly and the the touch of Maple in the Thai Chili wings were like no other. As for the Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, even I was surprised how good they were. Crispy outer layer that held together really well and as long as I'm able to identify the ingredients within the filling, it's all good with me. For my main course I had the Smokehouse Burger. Cooked exactly how I like it, well seasoned and topped with crispy onions. Their Smokehouse sauce had the prefect amount of sweetness with a nice smokey aroma to it, complementing the burger in the most perfect way possible. What was there not to like? Not sure because my bun was toasted and buttered. They're making it hard for me to find discrepancies. Their underground dining area complete with a bar plenty of TVs, interesting/clean decor and the option of cozy group booth seating. Upstairs you can enjoy their beautiful outdoor seating which also had a really nice gazebo to sit within. So much good to say about this place. It was also nice to see so many people enjoying the underground dining area despite the beautiful weather outside. I will definitely be back next time I come up here. read more

While in Manchester we passed the Union Underground while it was closed and were intrigued. It has a cute ambiance and atmosphere as soon as you walk in. It is underground so you walk down the stairs a bit into the dining room. We arrived just about when they opened and they sat us immediately. The place is clean and modern. It is nicely decorated and rustic. First, we ordered drinks. We tried to order the iced coffee on the menu and they said they ran out. Fine, so we had "Diet Coke". It did not taste like Coke or Pepsi, rather like a strange cola and was $3.50 each. Not major but just noted. Next, we ordered an appetizer, the Duck Rangoon. They were all out of those also and the waitress said they're taking them off the menu... so instead we got the special which was Korean Beef Wontons. Very yummy! The sauce and wonton filling was tasty. The menu felt a little limited. I had a burger. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare and it was medium well with no pink. Tasted average overall , but there was too much bun for the size of the patty. My partner had the scallops special. He enjoyed it but would've wanted a bit more especially for the cost. The dining room was busy for a Wednesday around opening. However, I really feel like this place needs to tighten up their menu and perfect what they have- in stock- to make it great rather than good. The layout and interior of this place is unfortunately the best part about it. I believe it's an old bank turned into a restaraunt (and the vault is still in there) which was a unique setting. I wanted to like this place a lot but it just fell short. My biggest complaint was the menu on their website was different from their actual menu. I went there because they had steak on the menu and it was close by. When I got there, steak was nowhere to be found and I was informed they don't serve it anymore. There were also a few other menu items that simply weren't there or were different than the one on their website. I got the chicken parm and it didn't taste very good. It came with linguine and as soon as you cut into it falls apart into the linguine and, unfortunately, the chicken was the highlight. Cheese was barely melted and the sauce was spicy (personally not a fan of spice and don't expect it in chicken parm). It just wasn't good. My friend got the flatbread for the shitake mushrooms and it came with...no mushrooms. Had to send it back. I finished my meal before she even started. Table behind us had to send their burger back 5 mins later. The staff is really friendly but you don't go to a restaurant to have a pleasant conversation. I had a superb experience here. My friends and I got a table on the patio and you can hear the soothing, steady stream of a river nearby, the excellent drinks, and amazing food makes this place the one to go to if your in the area. I got the Buffalo chicken Mac n cheese which was some of the best I've had. We also got the German pretzels and chicken poppers, both were solid. I think the best thing though was the French dip sandwich. It was out of this world. The steak was perfectly tender, and the goat cheese spread with the Anjou made the bread nice and moist. I was looking for places to eat with my boyfriend for a casual but fancy early Valentine's Day dinner. I don't know why this place even gets any bad reviews to be honestly because there is not one thing we could complain about. Firstly, just walking into the place and it being "underground" was the coolest thing. The atmosphere is really nice with friendly staff! They don't take reservations but we were seated right away and it was decently busy. The Moscow mule with the bourbon was amazing. Our cheesesteak egg rolls were really good but I wouldn't describe them as "cheesesteak". We both got burgers for our entree. They were cooked perfectly and the fries were great! I'm also annoying and like to get a bunch of sauces on the side... definitely get the chimichurri sauce and herb aioli for dipping anything in! Honestly, not sure why this place gets such mixed reviews. I regularly go to this spot and am always impressed by the food and service! I've been with large (and probably a bit annoying) groups, small groups, right before close, right at open, etc. and never had any problems. This is one of my favorite places in the area - food is always GREAT and love that it's not as expensive or hard to get into as some other places in town. Their crab rangoons today were probably the best I've ever had (highly recommend). One thing to note - hours: my understanding is they close in between lunch and dinner (4-5?) so Apple Maps can often mislead folks to thinking they're unexpectedly closed. read more

Things in Manchester close early, so we were having trouble figuring out what to eat on our first night in Vermont. We decided on Union Underground which had an interesting looking vibe and menu. The place has great atmosphere and very friendly staff. We immediately felt comfortable here. I ordered one of the bourbon cherry sour which I thought was very good. For appetizers, my fiancee and I ordered the beefalo egg roll and duck rangoon. Both were delicious and the thai maple chili sauce served with the rangoon was perfect. For entrees, my fiancee ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and I ordered the short rib po'boy, adding their bacon-apple chutney which sounded amazing. The chicken sandwich was as good as a chicken sandwich gets - crispy juicy chicken, saucy but not TOO saucy, and flavorful without being messy. The po'boy was great too, with tender short rib and slaw. The fries were hot and crispy, and my fiancee's mac and cheese was funky and delicious. We felt this place had earned dessert, so we both ordered sundaes. My fiancee ordered the smores sundae which came with toasted marshmallows on top, and I ordered the espresso sundae. Both were good and made with Wilcox ice cream. Overall a really good bar experience. An elevated quality of food compared to your usual bar-and-grill. I have been a visitor to the area for 30 years. For the last 3 years I have been coming to the union and laughed off the hostess and general attitude because the food was worth it. Tonight that changed. I walked in as they opened for the night. and the hostess told me to sit at the bar, She never even offering me a table. Because evidently I didn't warrant that! She said she would get me a menu but never did! The bar tender while aloof was cordial, and very friendly with locals, took his sweet time getting me a menu, but brought me a drink quickly. I ordered a Caesar salad (11$ ) and a 29$ ribeye medium. The Caesar salad was minuscule hardly a side salad. The steak was so thin I'm not sure if it was medium or well done, I really couldn't tell, I guess there was some pink in there. Then it was so tough I could barely cut it with steak knife they gave me. It came with a small ice cream scoop of garlic mashed potatoes ( garlic ????) and 3 pieces of broccoli. In town for the weekend and of course, was yelping to figure out where Saturday night dinner would take place. Reviews were questionable about Union Underground but the vibe and bar scene were exactly what interested us so we gave it a try. We couldn't initially find the place, but within 2 minutes we did. First impression upon walking in? Way too bright! Felt like the bar just closed and they brightened the place for people to leave. Place was super cute and nicely decorated and having it darker lit would have fit the bill much nicer in my opinion. Anyways, no big deal. My husband was very happy with the beer selection and the wine was exactly what I liked as well. Also, service was great. Nothing to say there other than bartenders were attentive and very nice. Food: We started with the tator kegs. Delicious! Rich and filling and tons of great flavor. He got the chicken dance with the Caesar and thought it was very good. In my opinion the Caesar was a bit bland and could have used more garlic and black pepper but that's a personal preference. I ordered the chicken parm. It was good but not great. Also a bit bland. The sauce was sweet and needed some grated parm and red pepper flakes on top. They didn't have that though. Not there fault though Bc it's literally the only Italian food on the menu.
