I went in today for the first time to surprise my boyfriend who was just told he's pre-diabetic. I wanted to show him that he can still enjoy desserts, which he loves. This place is amazing! My loved on was recently diagnosed with diabetes and I finally headed out to Upland to try his desserts. I explained to him that my loved one was just recently diagnosed and he went over with me the options in his display, explaining that some had few net cards but were all sugar free, and some had natural sugar via fruits. He was very nice! I wanted napoleons, which he was sold out and he graciously made some fresh ones for my loved one. They taste amazing! When ai go in, I get an array of pastries and baked goods and can honestly say they don't taste sugar free! It's hard to find sugar free goodies that don't have that gross aftertaste! The owner is a very nice and engaging person; i enjoy talking with him. And the sweets are plentiful. He has some excellent deals on pastry items as well as frozen yogurt. and a wide selection. My favorites are the cream filled brownies. ( the pecan and the vanilla are my downfall! We made the hour-long drive to Upland today to stock up on their low-cal muffins ($1.85 each). A friend told me about this place about 2 years ago. She said she buys about 30 muffins (they look like mini bundt cakes) per visit, which apparently isn't uncommon among Thinnery fans. They freeze nicely (thaw one overnight in the fridge, or just pop them into the microwave, which is what I do). The muffins make a tasty treat (and are a satisfying portion size) and are only 2 points each (for you Weight Watchers fans), though the corn muffin (my favorite) is 3 points. My favorite muffin flavors include corn, chocolate, cranberry orange, carrot cake, lemon poppy seed, and apple cinnamon. I'm not too crazy about the banana bran, blueberry, and carrot bran, though if you're a first-timer, I suggest trying out one of each and figuring out which ones you like best. I can't tell at all that they're sugar-free. Maybe some of you can, but I think most dieters and diabetics will be grateful that a place like Thinnery exists. This place also sells desserts, candy, chocolates, cakes, frozen yogurt, pastries and pies. We tried out their version of cheesecake (3 points), which didn't actually resemble real cheesecake. But it was still pretty good. Everything seems to sell out pretty quickly, but the owner told us that if you want super-fresh pastries, call at least a day ahead, and he would bake them fresh just for you. p.s. Most of the pastries are made with non-fat milk, so they aren't vegan/vegetarian. You might want to call and see if you can get a special order made with soy milk or whatnot. Love this place. My favorite is any kind of turnover or figure 8. The muffins are okay depending on what you get. The corn is the best but it also happens to have the most calories, coming in with the lemon poppy seed as a close second and the one with the lowest calories. The other stuff that I've tried hasn't been as good but honestly, the turnovers are so good I could care less about the rest. I've heard the freezes are amazing but I've yet to try it. I purchased a sugar free strawberry shortcake from the Thinnery on Monday, October 28th. It was supposed to be a birthday cake for my diabetic mother. The gentleman told me it was their most popular cake and that this was their last one. Owner Greg Sambo is guiltless as charged with creating turnovers, brownies, nine flavors of bundt cakes, soft-serve frozen treats and other baked goods as pleasing to the eye as the tastebuds. Most items are low-fat or fat-free and cholesterol-free. The Thinnery also offers items for the lactoseintolerant. Originally, the Thinnery started out as a franchise bought by Sambo's parents 27 years ago. He explained his mother belonged to Weight Watchers and this type of business appealed to her. After a few years the franchise folded, but the Sambos continued Thinnery as an independent enterprise. "We struggled for the first five years," Sambo said. "At the time there were a few of these types of places. I worked for them for free, learning about the business and some of their recipes. We hung on, fended for ourselves.
