My family went there for Thanksgiving dinner and it could have been a real challenge with an 89 yr old mother in law and two vegetarians. The staff sat us quickly and the service was fantastic, everything on time, hot food was hot, and salads were fresh. Our server, Debbie, was funny and so efficient -- water glasses were never empty. The kitchen made a special entree for the vegetarians and it was delicious. For that matter so was turkey dinner and shrimp scampi. The coffee was wonderful and desserts were perfect. This place was recommended by a friend and wow did it live up the the hype! Awesome drink special ( blueberry lemonade made with fresh lemonade and blueberry vodka). Our party tried the stuffed zucchini flowers, stuffed meatballs, fried Cali, lobster stuffed mushrooms, and steamers! Wow! We should have stopped there. Then there was soup and rolls with fresh baked popovers. Delish! Our server was so personable and chimed in with our inside jokes! Love Chelsea! I have been to the Tavern several times before and I LOVED it, and I still do. However, my last experience was definitely a case against nepotism. Now, I used to wait on tables myself, in fact, I paid my way through college that way so I am usually very forgiving. However, there were too many things that went wrong and to make matters worse, this server did not care, she thought it was a joke. Why? because she is the owners' daughter! Example 1: We waited for over 10 minutes to be acknowledged. We patiently waited and waited and after the 11th minute, we asked a server who and where is ours. The woman said, "Oh that is Chelsea. Let me see where she is." We still had to wait for about 3-4 minutes after that. No apology, no reason given. Ex 2: I asked for extra, extra olives with my martini. I got 2. Usually, the normal amt is 3. Ex 3: My appetizer was cold and the cheese was not even melted. Ex 4: I requested no fries, extra coleslaw with my dinner. I got ziti. Ex 5: This is one is the kicker. I was the only one who asked for coffee and when she delivers it, she intentionally puts it in front of my friend. When I give her a quizzical look, she laughs, says she is just kidding and then, SHE LIFTS UP THE CUP NOT BY THE HANDLE BUT BY COVERING HER HAND OVER THE TOP OF THE CUP!!!!!! I am not a drama or conflict-loving person so I was very civil, polite and undemanding. But because she clearly was unconcerned about the quality of service, I left 0 on a $50.00 check. The day after I IM'd my frustrations to their FB page. I never heard back from anyone until 5 days afterwards and that was because I had to post a follow up IM stating that it was unprofessional not hearing back from anyone for that period of time AND since they did not care, I would just post his to Yelp and other platforms. They responded within an hour! The staff member expressed great surprise that I had such a disappointing experience because, CHELSEA is not only the owners' daughter but is probably the most popular waitress-everyone asks for her and nobody has ever, ever complained about her until now. So that makes me wonder. Is she that that popular because she is a great waitress or because she is the owners' daughter? Do other people not complain because she is the owners' daughter and Chepachet is a small town. So if CHELSEA LUMNIA is that great but I still got shitty service even though I was the soul of tact and patience it can only mean that she was intentionally giving me shitty service. And by extension, she probably has done it to other people but since it is a small town, they probably did not want to make waves in such a small pond. So, as a warning to everyone out there throughout Southern New England who does not know CHELSEA, please save your time and money and ask for anyone else. How sad if this was a random person with too much time on their hands and looking for a post to take exception. Great portion for just $10.00 I had the Veal Marsala which was ok but drowned a little too much in the gravy. Wife had the seafood special. Pasta was good and plenty of lobster in it. Tavern on the Main has been a favorite restaurant of mine. We went for dinner tonight and was very very disappointed. I ordered a cup of clam chowder and it tasted absolutely nothing like clam chowder. My boyfriend ordered the Sunday special shrimp and scallops linguine. He said it was very dry. Our waitress never asked how anything was. She was the worst waitresses we have ever had there. We couldn't even get another soda , the hostess offered to get it for us . When we got our salads one was normal and the other one wasn't even half full. Her ID # WAS 00025 ( NO NAME ) . I ALWAYS give at least a 20% tip but not tonight. Won't be going back anytime soon. I live in gloscter and i have eaten here before my visit today, but today was a more memorable expierence than the mediocre food we had the last time we chose to eat here. Today i walked in the bar area for lunch and walked up to the bar and noticed that all the seats were full so i asked the bartender a very sinple question, "can i just sit at any table?" Meaning the empty tables in the bar area that were unoccupied, the bartender then said "are you getting a drink or eating?" Usually, I love this place. I had not been there in a while and took two first timers with me. The wait was about 20 minutes, which was not an issue. The hostess was friendly and so was our server. After we were seated it was awhile before the waiter approached our table. Two of us ordered the Riley's Bomb and one of us ordered the stuffed shrimp. The meals came with salad, we all liked the house dressing. The soup is included as well and was vegetable, which was ok. They also have a bread and spreads section. I did not like the spreads, but the bread was ok. I usually order Riley's bomb, which is seafood over a ravioli. The sauce was awful this time. It seemed as if it was old, it was very stiff. I so wanted to like this place. You know, they say it's haunted. Alas, the only haunting will be the memory of how mediocre the food was. Not a thing would I consider as good. The "best" wine in the bar was no better than pig swill. I took one drink and pushed it away. On to the food...had stuffed mushrooms with the three main stuffing ingredients being Campbell's mushroom soup, crumbled Ritz crackers (not in the trendy way) and lobster bites. Also had calimari that if it wasn't Cisco frozen, it was just as bad. Onto the entrees...my steak caprice, while it sounded good on the menu with its drizzle of basaltic and topped with broiled tomatoes and mozzarella , was in fact rather hard to eat - ordered medium rare it came out medium well. The tomatoes were just slices thrown on top and the whole thing was drowned in a low grade basalmic. The side pasta dish had overdone pasta and a red sauce that seemed a little to close to chef boy-r-dee. Did I mention the all the food took way too much time. The place was packed, though. I love the older original rustic look and all....BUT, The only reason i give 2 stars is because it's really dirty inside. Everywhere you look, the walls next to your booth, the floor, the ceiling, cobwebs, napkins and litter on floor, halloween decor needs to come down....It's January now. You can't see out the windows they're so filthy, esp the windows in the bar area where I had to go to find the Men's room. Also, replace those lighted candles on the walls with nicer more modern one that doesnt look like an adult toy, Seriously. read more

The food at Tavern on Main is tasteful, but their customer service is not. Recently my family ordered food-to-go and we were provided with the wrong order. After returning all the way home to a phone call notifying us of the fact, my mother returned to the restaurant to get our correct order. Despite the fact that the incorrect order had come home with us, Tavern on Main actually wanted it back. Having a close friend who is a chef has definitely provided me with an array of frightening restaurant stories, and I have always been warned of restaurants re-selling food. My mother explained that she didn't plan on returning it because it's illegal to re-sell it, the waitress was rude to her and explained that she would now have to pay for her order out of pocket. Now, I've waited before, and unfortunately I have ended up at establishments that will dock an employees pay for an honest mistake. My feelings on this have always been that a restaurant that holds so little value or concern for it's employees can only hold about the same level of concern for their customers. This is clearly illustrated by the treatment my family received from the staff members at the Tavern, who are obviously so on-edge about the punishment they may endure that they find it completely appropriate to actually degrade a customer. In fact, they told my mother that they were going to file CHARGES against her for the food that they made the mistake of giving her. After all of the effort and unpleasantness with Tavern, my mother returned the day-old food with a note to the owner and a check to cover the cost of the order they mistakenly gave us. We haven't heard back from the owner yet, but sadly Tavern DID accept back day-old food. I can honestly say that I will never do business with this company again and will tell my friends to do the same. read more

The Tavern on Main is the quintessential New England restaurant. It's not only housed in a building that's almost 300 years old, and it's the site of the historic Dorr Rebellion (go look it up), but the owners claim it is also haunted. The Tavern hosts ghost hunter dinners and has been featured in a number of shows and publications. Despite the overabundance of atmosphere, they seem to be struggling to find their identity. Do they offer culinary experiences or comfort food? Are they a tourist trap or a local gem? Are they expensive or a bargain? The menu, and food, seem to be equally confused. Most dinners come with a soup and bread bar which is hideous at best. However, many of the entrees are exceptional. We have eaten here many times and have had wonderful seafood and steaks on nearly every occasion. On our most recent visit, I enjoyed a large, fresh perfectly-cooked portion of New England cod. But the dinner special included a New England-style apple crisp which my wife liked, but I found boring and flavorless. Despite my criticisms, it is a fun place and I think this is a must-visit restaurant for everyone to try once. Make reservations and arrive early -- the small dining room fills up fast. And as far as value is concerned, they offer many specials, my favorite being the Sunday night menu where a couple can order bread, soup, salad, an entree, dessert, drinks and pay tax and include a tip, and yet still pay only around $40. Had the crab bites for appetizer. 3 tiny balls a little bigger than the size of a quarter. Tasted like something from a frozen food box. Then it got worse. Not really impressed. We came here because my mom loves it and it was her birthday. We were a party of six which really isn't that big of a party but our server didn't seem pleased that he was sat with a six too of mostly older people. Parking is a nightmare as there is no lot, just street. You also can take a risk and park at the Family Dollar next door that has signs everywhere that you can only park if shopping there. Meals are a little pricey seeing that the servers are pimple faced and immature. The girls are walking around with yoga pants and t shirts. I really don't want to see your panty lines, thanks. Sorry for asking because my parents were curious. Jeeze. He also wasn't really prompt, and rarely checked in with us. Very attentive, unlike our server, who would always go back to the servers little section and chat instead of taking care of tables. The menu stated they could make almost anything gluten free which intrigued me, but as my server already was jerky I didn't bother asking him, it just wasn't worth it. Also, a family member can't really get up and down stairs and he had a rough time getting in the door--less steep stairs would be nice or a ramp. There are two sets of stairs so you would still have the tavern charm on the main stairs. I don't see why they couldn't adapt one set of stairs to be more accessible. This is an old building (over 250 years old) and it shows some great charm but the floors are really uneven and you really can't move around the restaurant. The floor layout is to fit as many people as possible and it's really awkward to move around to get to the soup and bread bar or bathroom. It's very loud in the dining room, along with the music which wasn't necessary. The bathroom was tiny in that if you opened your stall door you'd hit the person washing their hands and was grimy. Surprisingly the bar side of the tavern was quiet. If I was on a date I'd go to that side of the tavern. The Italian wedding soup was home made and delicious, along with apple butter for the bread! The salad was a great size and the HONEY vinaigrette dressing (that the server insisted was balsamic, lol) was to die for. I wasn't so impressed with the entree I ordered--pasta with pink vodka sauce. The sauce was really watery and didn't have much flavor. I also ordered the fried stuffed meatballs with my pasta, expecting some oozy yummy mozzarella. I was extremely disappointed. It seems like when they made the meatballs (which had more of a sausage texture, very little bread crumbs) they just added mozzarella to the mix before rolling them together so you couldn't really taste it. They weren't really fried (crispy as one would expect) but only pan fried, which is nothing special as many people pan fry their meatballs before putting them in sauce anyways. The pink vodka sauce on them was thick and what I was expecting on the pasta. Bummer that that sauce wasn't on the pasta. My father got a steak and I had a bite. Delicious, wish I got it myself. In fact, the steak is what gave this a three star instead of a two. Interestingly enough, all of the check was done by hand, no POS system. Surprised that the order came out right, but you'd think that a place with prices like these would be a little more in the new age. The wait staff really takes care of you as well as the manager. Ive eaten here several times and only had one experience with really sandy muscles. The dining room side has a great, historical atmosphere, and the bar side is great for more lively conversation. I've been twice & both times I had the same experience: LONG wait to be seated. Restaurant was EXTREMELY loud. It's almost impossible to have a conversation unless you raise your voice to a yelling level like everyone else in the room. I'm assuming that the noise level is due to the low ceiling. I have no idea whether the food is good or bad because we didn't stay long enough. The mold covered awning out front should have given away the rest of the "experience". First off you can't even tell if it's open or not until you get up to the door. Once inside you're in a closed off tiny front hall looking for an entrance door. Once you get into the dining area it, well, stinks. I mean moldy rug old urine stained wood smell. We got a Friday's Special menu on Saturday and the bathrooms were disgusting and the bathroom doors are crooked. Needless to say we left before the wait person came back.
