Best kept secret around! Bishop Hill has awesome drinks, a great bartenders and staff, and the food is really good and reasonably priced. I can't say enough good things about the chicken parm Tuesdays. The portion is big enough to share and the price is great - $10 for red sauce and $12 for vodka sauce (my favorite). The pizzas are also really good and there are some unusual toppings. For example, The Texan pizza has bbq sauce, chicken, bacon, and onion rings. We love sitting near the wood stove - so toasty warm and cozy. Our go-to place and you can find us there at least once a week! read more

Bishop Hill Tavern has been on my list of places to try for a while now. We often stop at historic businesses when we travel, so why not do the same 'at home'? The building is smallish and located on a corner. A small parking lot is located on busy Hartford Ave, with a building entrance on that side that leads into the first of two bar areas. A larger parking area is located around the corner on Bishop Hill Road. Another two entrances, into the 2nd bar area are accessible from this lot. Also, a huge outdoor seating area, under a tent runs along one side of this parking area. So they have lots of room to enjoy a summer evening outside. We arrived late afternoon between meal times. The bar was full except for two seats. Other than the bar, the tables and booths in this area were empty (the other bar was not staffed at this hour). We like sitting at the bar and talking with the regulars. We learn so much about the area this way. Even in our own state! The majority of our bar-mates and the bartender were very friendly and we had some lively conversations. The building itself is old and much of the original dark wood remains along with a big fireplace. The ladies room is right at the end of the bar, is small and older and everything works. Full bar, beer on tap or in cans and wine. They have a nice bar-food menu. I chose sweet potato fries as my side while my dining companion chose regular fries. Both were good, as were our sandwiches (au jus and Big bird) Good quality and tasty. The booths began to fill as we were leaving and the barkeep was also their waitress, so she has a big area to cover. The regulars are very well known to each other and the staff so if you sit at the bar you may feel like the 'odd man out'. This place has gone way downhill. We've been eating here for almost 2 decades and found excellent food in a neighborhood bar. In the last 2 months, I've been twice and the service has been horrendous. The waitresses (different) were way more interested in shooting the shit with the people at the bar than watching the patrons in the dining room. Worse yet, they seem to have a new chef. I always get the chicken wings, ordered "well done, extra crispy" and they used to cook as requested. Last two times, they were not crispy at all. When I complained, the waitress, instead of apologizing, said they couldn't be cooked well done! Don't trip on the dangling carpet on the entrance step, as my elderly mom did. When I pointed that out, the server said they would not fix it. Hidden gem has become a dump. read more

I've passed by here a number of times they have weekday lunch specials that I've been wanting to come in and try and I actually did a presentation here for a community event, but didn't have a chance to come in and eat! First visit! Burger was great. I will definitely be back for lunch! So they're offering a standard cheeseburger and you can upgrade to other burgers I decided on a black & blue burger without the blackened season and a side of curly fries. I don't normally write reviews, good or bad, but I just had to tonight. I suppose it's appropriate that we just left a Halloween because the service and food at Bishop Hill Tavern was gruesome. The bartender / server was visibly annoyed when my party of 7 doubled the current customer count at 9pm. Where to start... the jambalaya, would not recommend. No sausage in it at all despite it being listed on the menu and it just didn't taste good. The calamari was passable. The mozzarella sticks were overcooked. But the chicken wings were good. My Captain Morgan neat was clearly watered down and when I excused myself to the restroom I saw the cook smoking a cigarette in the kitchen. I will not be going back there and I will be calling the department of health on Tuesday. Just. Gross. read more

Part of the fun of birding is chasing rarities, birds that for one reason or another, make their way to areas where they don't belong. Some wander for reasons unknown to science. Others develop a flaw in their navigation system and migrate the wrong way. And so, when a Common Cuckoo, a European species visited this area instead of heading to Africa, it attracted hundreds of people. We made the drive from Jersey and because birds and food are my thing, I spotted this place on my way to where the bird was being seen. We spent an hour watching the Cuckoo and made our way back to this inviting looking spot. The one server was very pleasant but she had a lot to do. So we spent more time there then we contemplated. Great beer list. Pulled pork sandwich for me. A burger and some wings for my friend. The sandwich was perfectly ordinary, nothing that was memorable. My friend ordered his burger, incinerated. Not my style but he seemed to enjoy it. The wings looked great. I was bummed not to have a beer but it was a three hour plus drive home. Glad we stopped in and patronized a local joint. I seriously doubt I will be out this way again but if I am, I'll be pleased to pay another visit. read more

Had a bad experinece with what i can best describe as a "drunk customer" before noon. Just a loud mouth that the bartender should have thrown out. He and his gal pal pretty much annoyed the folks that were in the bar. The sad part is I like the sandwiches there. You won't keep customers coming back with the loser gang hanging around drinking drafts or continuing their overnight bingefest. I will never go back. Not shocked the building is for sale. I've passed this place a million times. Looking for a place to grab lunch on a rainy, muggy Sunday we ventured in. I would love to know the history of this building. I bet it was a tavern/inn between Hartford and Providence back in the hundreds of years ago. We sat in the back dining room. Some locals were already Sunday day drinking at the bar. They were oddly out of turkey (both sandwich and entree). We split the RI calamari, which was actually pretty good. I got the fish sandwich. The fish was seriously fried -- more fry than fish. The coleslaw was mild but good, and the curly fries could have been more well-done. But maybe that was in me for not making that request. Two huge TVs on either wall showing Naked & Afraid with the volume down. Nuff said. This seems like a place that's beloved by local regulars. I can't say it was innovative, or exceptional, or even memorable. Just stopped here with friends on the way down from Boston to Mohegan Sun on the way to New York. Great all the way place in historic building that feels like it's 150 years old amd historical. The food was excellent: Giant mac & cheese burger, nice chicken Cesar salads, enormous fish sandwich. Tom the owner super nice guy and they've got a converted bocce court so a great outdoor space. Absolutely horrific time to receive my food. I order my blasphemous bishop burger and it didn't come to my table for about 40 minutes. I couldn't taste any of the supposed flavor and no I did not have COVID-19. Also no pretzel roll as advertised. I also came here back in 2016 and got rigged out of the bocce champions hosted by lance's plumbing. Did not have lemonade and had an allergic reaction to the water. How do you mess up WATER!!!! Curly fries were also Like c'mon guys! There was also an insect inside of my menu. Owner was extremely rude I believe his name was Thomas. I reported him to the police for being a predator. Could not decide between 3 or 4 stars so went with the higher one. My wife's parents live up here so when we visit we pick up take out from here and we were all really impressed. The food is great, portions are quite large and price is inexpensive! Very pleasantly surprised by this! Parking lot is constantly full- don't let that throw you off as the inside is a good size!! 4.5 stars because in addition to the many positive's I listed I also I like the bartenders (Nichole & Aimee have been fantastic my last few visits) and wait staff - they are consistent, friendly and make great recommendations. I've always felt as though every time we come here the service actually gets better and better as staff makes a huge effort to get to know you!! I'd go back. While it's not the best food or cocktails I've ever had, this is a comfortable space with a huge outdoor seating area and a laid back vibe. And yes, they even have a bocce court. While sipping on a beer, I enjoyed a plate of buffalo calamari, then switched to peruse the tavern's martini list. Mixed drinks don't seem to be their strongest suit, and my martini with peach vodka and coconut rum was terrible (but shame on me for curiously choosing it). Service was good - our waitress seemed a little miserable but was extremely quick with food and drink orders. Overall, a pleasantly average spot. We were in the area on an early Saturday evening, looking for an outdoor venue which could seat 6. A call revealed they had room. Upon entering we found a Covidly correct glassed in bar and a darkened area, obviously currently unused but for for access to restrooms. That room emptied into an actual bar area with occupied tables, not particularly well spaced and an active bar with patrons. I do not remember any glass separations at the bar. The waitress took us outside where we found a large, very well spaced area with decks, tables bocci/corn hole court, large tented area, large meat cooker/smoker, large fireplace. In general, a very welcoming area both Covidly and normally. We we're giving a menu of specials and nothing else. After waiting a while a drink order was taken. After drinks came, quite some time, we were told menu was on the web site to be accessed on our cell phones. Good for COVID but a pain in the neck for six septuagenarians. Unfortunately the web site needed to be upgraded and there were two complete, but different, menus. After that was determined, we found an INCREDIBLY LARGE AND VARIED MENU which caused us to wonder how such a place could have a real chef with real food. We expected burgers. There was a burger section, a sandwich section, a sea food section, an Italian food section, a bunch or true entrees. HARD DECISIONS THERE. Plenty of beer but virtually no wine list but it isn't a wine venue. So as not to further bore you, look at the web site for the menu. We were all happy with our food and the beer selection. So, my summary, we liked the place. Inside had a warm, homey, pubby atmosphere, great for a winter afternoon or evening but not particularly set up for a COVID environment. To transit the bar and use the restrooms one has to negotiate walking between the unmasked bar patrons and the unmasked (understandably) table patrons and attempt not to touch anyone. We had to remind the waitress to don her mask when she approached our table. The response was appropriate. Outside area was great but I hope they are able to find some heaters or they'll lose that in a few weeks. We would all be happy to return but might await a resolution to our COVID situation to do so. read more

Will never come back here again, plain and simple. I stopped in for the $8 lunch special (which is either 2 hot dogs and fries, a burger with fries or a chicken Cesar salad. And a drink.) I chose the salad but when I went back to my truck and opened the container I saw this crap. This cannot fill up a child never mind a grown man. I understand it's a lunch special so I didn't expect much but I surely expected more than this. Salads are cheap to begin with so I can't be cost. I had half a mind to go back in and toss the salad back at whoever made it but even if they offered to give me a proper portion I didn't want to get my food spat in. Two visits here. The first visit was fun, our waitress was very sweet and the food was good. The boneless chicken appetizer is delicious. Good beer selection on tap and some of the drink specials looked interesting. Went back with the family expecting a similar experience and it couldn't have been more different. We realized it was more of a dive bar hangout with a less than desirable clientele. We were planning on sitting outside, but we saw people smoking, which our kids hate and we didn't want to expose our kids to that. We ended up sitting in the room with the bar, and the patrons at the bar were loud and brash, clearly not caring that a family was in there, as every other word LOUD word was an F bomb or another swear. Our waitress this evening was in a terrible mood. She wasn't sweet like the other one who took care of us a few weeks earlier. We got one word answers from her even though we were trying to be really pleasant. We realize that people have bad days so we tried to be really kind. "Do you have chocolate milk?" was answered with "No." Same thing when we asked if there was a kid's menu. "No." Usually a waitress would suggest something that kids can order or something the kitchen could do. Not in this case. In between placing our order and getting our food, there was a ruckus at the bar. My husband gave a woman who was sitting at the bar the Heimlich Maneuver because she was choking on something. 911 was called and took her away. It all happened so fast, I was not even sure what happened. I hope she is ok. She did not look well. I said to the waitress "My husband just gave someone the Heimlich!" Her response was a brusque "I know." Not even a thank you from her or any indication that this was out of the ordinary. We thought we had found a new place with pretty good food but because of the service we received that evening, we will absolutely not be back. read more

For a place outside of Providence, they have Providence/slightly high prices on some drinks. Mixed drinks are not their forte, and they vary between giving you real glasses and solo cups. To me real glasses are kind of a symbol of adulthood and the establishment trusting their patrons. Service is a bit lackluster, but at the same time I'm sure they weren't over enthused by the Columbus Day weekend everyone home for the "holiday" crowd. Cool Spot Decent bar with decent apps (wings really good). The big draw here is in the summer. This place a very cool outdoor area with a bocce ball court, fireplace and large outdoor bar area. Tried the monster burger special (split it, it's 16 oz) it was pretty good. One server for a whole room including bar service does not cut it, even though she handles it fairly well. D. Did I say No Tabasco? (Red Hot never makes the cut) The dining room is less than a comfortable environment, slightly hole in the wall feeling, tables plopped up against a wall across from the bar on the other side. A great little tavern on the outskirts of Johnston. We went on a slow Sunday night. Only people in the restaurant side. The wife had the steak bomb which was huge was great. I had the fat bastard. What a find! We went to Wicked Tulips Farm (which is wonderful) and then wanted some lunch. Stumbled across this place and frankly didn't expect much. They had four $5 lunch special including a ham and cheese with fries, a personal pizza with 2 toppings, 2 chilli dogs, or fried clams with fries. Seeing as it was a lovely warm spring day, visions of summer weather enticed us to try the fried clam platter. We had nothing to lose, except 5 bucks. Well the waitress/bartender was very nice and friendly and attentive. She offered lemon in my water and refilled our drinks frequently. The clams were surprisingly excellent. On the road back from a night at Mohegan Sun, bleary-eyed and unwilling to remain adrift in the food desert that is the stretch of 395 between Uncasville and Boston, we let Google Maps take us on a more town-based trip, and we're glad we did. At a stop light, in the rain, we spotted this place out the car window, and a split second decision had us turning into the parking lot. We had zero idea of what to expect - other Yelp reviews were sparse, one stating only "try the Reaper burger". Well, any place that offers a burger named for the Angel of Death sounds good to me, so in we went. The front room has a small bar, with maybe 10 seats, around a TV that was playing local news read by a man with very strange eyebrows. They had five taps, 4 national and one local. The fridge is full of good bottled beers, from all over the country - no "budbudlightcoorslightmichelobrollingrock" nonsense from our bartender, who was a pleasant young woman who left us alone, but sat nearby watching the odd TV man, in case we needed anything. The menu reads like something from an Adam Richman dream - the "Reaper" burger involves 2 patties, a lot of bacon, and some other heart-stopping goodies, between two grilled cheese sandwiches. A chicken sandwich on the menu involved jalapeno poppers and fried pickles. *Not* for the high of cholesterol. We both got burgers, and they were VERY good. No soggy brioche, no shortage of pickles. The place was well nigh deserted, and the back room had a sort of disused look, with stools up on the tables - like we were there at the last seating before they closed to fumigate, but other than that, I would come back here in a second if I ever had any reason to be in this section of sparsely populated Rhode Island. read more

We didn't eat here so can't comment but their patio is awesome! Tons of games- giant jenga, bocce, foosball, ping pong and corn hole which made it really fun and easy to spend time there. Really fun to hang out on a summer night, drink some beers, listen to music and chill. We originally ordered our drinks at the bar but were pleasantly surprised when the bartender/waitress checked in with us outside and brought out another round (the service was great even when they got busy). It got pretty happening around dinner time even though it was a Monday and we were happy to be outside rather than competing for space in the slightly dark interior rooms. Great beer specials- the hubby got $1 mugs of rolling rock, I enjoyed my $3 pints of Blue Moon (extra classy with an orange wedge). We stopped here on the way back from PA. It does not look great outside nor inside, it's a bar type atmosphere. There's a scary "X" condemned sign outside! Went in, ordered Veal Parm and Chicken Marsala, and both were very good and large portions. It was actually a lot better than many places we've eaten. Service was good. The front is noisy and the bathrooms are sleazy. I would recommend it for the food, but it's not a place you want to take a first date to eat. I went here for dinner with my wife on a Saturday night and was immediately surprised by the lack of patrons during what should be one of the busiest nights for a restaurant. The interior is split into two separate rooms, each with their own bar and multiple TVs for viewing. Neither room was particularly inviting, with dark colors and low lighting conditions. We sat ourselves at a booth and waited a few minutes for one of the staff to come over. It appears that the bartenders also perform dual-duty as wait staff for diners and they seem unenthused about it. When our waitress/bartender came to our table with the menus, she immediately asked if we wanted appetizers and seemed to forget to ask us about our drinks. My wife politely asked to order drinks first and let us peruse the menu. I tried to order a Narragansett Pale Ale on draft, which was listed on their menu, but was told "don't even bother with that menu", which was kind of confusing. I was offered a Berkshire Brewing Co. Steel Rail Pale Ale as an alternative, which I gladly accepted. We continued to order the "wings" (no indication of how they were prepared, bone-in or boneless, or quantity) with some buffalo sauce. They arrived promptly and were the best thing about my experience here. They were bone-in wings, a little on the small side, but cooked to the right amount of crispiness with a good dosage of a spicy buffalo sauce. Looking over the rest of the menu, there were a plethora of options. While this might be a good thing for the undecided, it indicates to me that the kitchen doesn't do many things well. With trepidation, my wife and I both ordered burgers. I opted for the Philly burger (sauteed mushrooms, onions, and cheese), my wife ordered a burger that was sandwiched between a grilled cheese. The burgers arrived with little delay and we started in. My burger was particularly greasy and tasted as if it had come off an old, dirty grill. I have a feeling that frozen patties are the norm here. The french fries were nice and hot and appeared to be fresh, hand-cut potatoes. Overall, I don't think I would return here for a meal. The staff don't seem to be very keen on serving diners and the food fell short. However, with the attention paid to the bar clientele, I could see how coming here for some drinks and appetizers would be a smart move. read more
