Had reservations at 6 on Saturday night with close friends. I didn't have a hand in picking this place, and after reading some earlier reviews, was honestly a bit skeptical. When we arrived, it was jammed at the front door and a little chaotic. There is very little waiting room and I recall thinking this was going to be a bad night out. Chatted with a few patrons and learned that the large crowd was somewhat unusual. But heard positive things overall from more than one person. We got seated shortly after 6. The hostess was great about keeping us informed prior to, and she did a great job of managing the crowd. Our waitress was Riley. She was awesome!! Being first-timers, she was able to give us a quick rundown of the restaurant's go-to's and made some solid recommendations!! We ordered Tavern style calamari and potato skins. Both were amazing!! The calamari was light and crispy on the outside and so tender and not chewy at all! Our dishes included Sirloin Caprice, Seafood Alfredo, Pecan Chicken and Seafood A Olio E Olio. We all enjoyed our meals thoroughly! The lobster, crab, bay scallops and shrimp in the Alfredo dish was all cooked to perfection; all soft and tender, and the alfredo was not too heavy or thick. The linguine was perfectly al dente too. The place emptied out eventually, but new diners filed in consistently throughout the night. We ended up staying nearly 3 hours but it never seemed that long. We weren't rushed and yet the waitstaff checked on us constantly during that time. The entire staff, many of them on the younger side, were all so kind, attentive, helpful and pleasant. Everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their nights and food as much as we were. Prices were definitely very reasonable also. We were pleasantly surprised when the check arrived. We skipped dessert but all had cocktails with our meals. Bonus points for the fact that it was the week before Halloween and there's some real cool history behind the building, location and business!! Went a few weeks ago for the prime rib . We were told there was a $5.00 upcharge on the prime rib . We ordered anyway I ordered mine medium rare and the pieces of prime rib I received were horrible they were as thin as a skirt steak would be and they were well done. This was not even worth the reg price. I will never go back, I mentioned to the bartender who served us and he turned and walked away not even offering to comp my cocktail. read more

Ok so tried Tavern on Main one more time as it has been 5 years ..... 1) service was off or something 1 server who has been there forever either trying to do too much or maybe tired of doing too much either way got my drink 10 minutes after I got seated. 2) the customers are evidently in charge of the music changed it turned it up etc to the point where we couldn't hear each other 3 The stuffed mushrooms were ok nothing to write home about 4) Final straw the fire alarm went off the upstairs tenants burnt something fire dept had to come in order to shut it off that was enough for us paid for our drinks i n appetizer n left it definitely needs straightening out seems dirty inside or better yet revamping doubt we will return read more

disgusting!!!! the soup turain was Kale(more like seaweed). the rolls were stale. we each ordered the sirloin steak.. One was supposed to be rare and was well done. Could not even chew the meat. VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Tavern on Main has been our go to for years and we always loved it. Today's visit changed that for good. Most definitely will not be going back. This was our first time there since the change of mgmt. and couldn't have been more disappointed. I ordered the fried haddock and was unable to eat most of it due to it being FULL of bones! The peas were cold, and as for the baked potato, it was also cold and most of the inside of the potato was brown. My husband ordered a seafood dish which also arrived lukewarm at best. We ordered a cup of N.E. clam chowder as well which was basically a cup of floured milk with a few potatoes and clams and the flavor was extremely lacking. I mentioned the issue of the bones in the fish to our server (who was the only good part of our visit) and he said he was going back to inform the kitchen only to come back out with our bill and put it on the table. I had not asked for a discount on the bill (although it should have been immediately offered) and there was also no offer to remove the charge for the fish dinner. The manager couldn't even be bothered to come out to our table to talk to us. The restaurant was NOT busy at all so no excuse. This was rude and showed only to be completely unapologetic and insensitive to the issue. Sadly, this historic and once wonderful restaurant is not even close to what it once was. read more

This is in a VERY old historic building and that just adds to the charm. The staff is very friendly. Parking was not an issue. The rolls were hot and fresh, gluten- free available. I got the pecan crusted chicken with butternut ravioli. The sauce was so good, i could just eat that like soup. Lol. My sister had a pasta Alfredo dish. We will be back. First I didn't get the full experience here. We sat upstairs and it was kind of quiet, plain, messy and dusty. The onion soup was ok- it needed some more time under the broiler. I thought the steak tips were delicious and I liked that it was served with a salad. The service was good and friendly. I might come back but not running to return. To the folks who have lived in Chepachet as my family has for over 100years the restaurant is known as the "Stagecoach" somehow "Tavern on the Main" is unbecoming and phony. Now that I have gotten that off my mind, the change in names hasn't changed the excellence of their cuisine, it has always been excellent although there has been some variations from the old menu probably due to Covid concerns. Great Drinks and Food Great local spot in woodsy Chepachet, RI. This restaurant is in a house that I think is almost 300 years. The place has a lot of character. The owner kept the inside pretty much the same and you can see the age in a good way. The Food: Best dish they have are the blue cheese mussels. Next couple are the 1 podiums lobster roll or the 20 ounce (small?) prime rib. All delicious and very reasonably priced. B+ Drinks: This place doesn't measure drinks, they serve you a GOOD drink. This is an update from my 2020 review. We still love this place! The creative dishes that come out of the kitchen, you would never expect. The apps are crazy!. Our b&b hosts recommended coming here as it is a nearby favorite. We ate here on a Friday night around 8:45, It was packed with patrons, loud with a fun spooky atmosphere. The waitresses were kind of rushing around, as they close at 9:30pm so I overheard a quick "theres bread over there"... We realized that there was a station of bread and soup which is complimentary. I ordered off the specials menu .. a surf and turf eggroll/wonton and the swordfish. It was excellent. Huge portions! I actually took half of it home. My husband got the pot roast. He loved it, tender and tasty, also took it home! For dessert, I finally got to try the RI special, grape nut pudding! Delicious as well! The inside of this place is old and supposedly haunted. We were the last ones in there so I got to take some pics of it which was fun. I hear some of the other dishes are excellent, I would definitely come back when we weren't so rushed on time. read more

I've been going here for decades and have seen the place thru multiple owners. If you like a place with history, you'll be intrigued. Located in a quaint village and walking distance from the country's oldest, most continuously operating general store - as well as a handful of amazing antique shops - The tavern offers a glimpse into the past. It was originally a stagecoach stop between Providence and Hartford (and formerly known as the Stagecoach Tavern). The ceilings are low, the floors are sloped and there is even a resident ghost! Now, for the food! There's a wide variety choices, including several daily specials. Included with the entries is the soup and bread bar. It's daily soup (ours was chicken and very good) as well as several types of bread and spreads....even popovers! On my most recent visit, I was entertaining friends from Texas. They loved the stories as much as they loved their food. We all started with a Bloody Mary, which was just right - spicy and delicious. Dinner was more difficult to decide. I ordered the Shrimp Florentine: Six jumbo shrimp served over cheese tortellini and spinach, with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. OMG. It was amazing!!! Everyone's meal looked good, it this girl had no 'menu envy.' My date chose the Stuffed Chicken Breast from the Colonial Sunday Cuisine : Soup, salad, potato, vegetable and dessert for $15! It looked really, really good and he ate every morsel. Our out-of-state friends ordered the Baked Stuffed Shrimp, which was fabulous, and the Beef Stroganoff, which I believe might have been a daily special. They gushed over their meals and wasted nary a crumb. The prices are very reasonable.... And the service was perfect. There was no haunting happening, although I have had the experience of being there after closing with a local ghost hunter.... that's a story for another day. They call these special events "Eat, Drink & be Scary." Very interesting, indeed... This is one place that I'll return to over and over again. read more

Okay, so I had been by here loads of times, but on the night of March 23, 2022, my sister and a friend of hers were going there for dinner and invited me to come along. I am so glad I said yes! We walked into this lovely colonial style dining room and were seated at a nice booth in the corner. We each looked at the menu, and I think I did a double take and checked to see if my glasses were clean. FRIED STUFFED MEATBALL?? Are you kidding me?? Great googly moogly, the thing was easily the size of my fist! This meatball required the KFJ - Knife and Fork Job. WARNING: These are highly delicious. The gourmet mac n' cheese..... Ohhh man, was that sooo good! I wanted to keep eating it, even though I was getting full. I had macaroni and cheese before, but not like this. I had to bring my leftovers home so Mom could try some. She took one bite and declared it was delicious. Of course, I'm practically filled to the gills when the subject of dessert was brought up. FRIED BANANA CHEESECAKE? I'll make room! I would go for that again, that was bananas in every sense of the word! I wound up doing the Penguin Shuffle back to the car, but it was worth it, that food was so good! The Tavern on the Main is a favorite among the locals here in Chepachet for their food as well as the back story of the building with claims that it is haunted. Well I can't say if there is a ghost or not but we will forever be haunted by this meals. We were impressed when we looked at their expansive menu and thought we were in for a real treat. However; it fell short with their frozen food and their "vegetable" that was some sort of cabbage slop which is honestly being nice. Their chicken with gravy which was absolutely horrible as the gravy was congealed on top of my obviously frozen chicken was also dry and tasteless. My husband who ordered two meals so we can try the menu was made to feel as if it was porposterous that he was ordering two meals instead of one and he instantly regretted both meals. The fried scallops were very over priced as they were just frozen bay scallops and their "hand cut" fries were you guessed it frozen!! The garlic steak tips in which my husband ordered them to be medium was well done and were smothered in cheese with no garlic at all. The best thing about this meal was their mashed potatoes which I could very easily have made on my own at home. The two stars were for their speedy service however; if someone is ordering more than one meal I would suggest to not scoff at them for doing so. Over all not going back. read more

We recently went to the tavern because we usually go there because we usually like their food and it's pretty consistent, however I don't know what happened but we ordered prime rib and waited a while and when it came out all the food was cold... We mentioned it to the wait staff and they said that's how it served which is ridiculous... The people behind us waited for their food for 40 minutes they wound up walking out... I don't think we will be visiting this restaurant again read more

Local, local, local. On our travels all over the place we love doing the local establishments and this place did not disappoint whatsoever. If your in for just dinner step to the right for the restaurant. If you want too soak in latest things happening in town go left to the tavern and just listen or join in on conversation. The menu has very nice selections of comfort food and better. You can do bar food to Prime Rib either way you will be pleased. The staff is friendly and makes everyone feel welcome. Found this hidden gem of a restaurant about two years ago when a friend recommended one of his favorite place to eat in Rhode Island. I have tried a variety of dishes over the last two years, some I love and a few that weren't for me. The best aspect of the Tavern on Main is their never failing soup bar. They have a homemade soup and bread bar that has never disappointed. They serve soups such as Italian Wedding, Baked Potato, Classic Chicken Noodle, and many many more. The meals are always served promptly and to perfection. For seafood lovers, the Seafood Alfredo was even appealing to myself, a non seafood person! It was tossed and topped with a thick creamy Alfredo sauce and filled with a variety of seafood - and ALOT of it!! Typically my favorite meal is Chicken Marsala, however the way it is served with a large slice of real mozzarella cheese topping the thin piece of chicken does not appeal to me. I can tell you, my favorite dish is the Steak Tips topped with Parmesan Cheese. The filled Meatballs were ordered as an appetizer but could easily have been ordered as a meal with a side of pasta. The appetizer came with two baseball sized filled meatballs, topped with a pink vodka sauce. This was a mouthwatering duo. After trying many different meals and appetizers at Tavern on Main, you really can't go wrong. From seafood to steak the meals are home made with love from this unique restaurant. If the food isn't enough to draw you in, the unique and haunting history behind the Tavern may just do it. I have been here twice. I went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my toddler son and mother in law. We waited for 10 minutes before being acknowledged. There were only 2 tables eating. The waitress finally came out from the back and we got seated. I ordered the scallop salad and it was absolutely delicious. From the perfectly cooked bay scallops to the delicious cracker breading, I was just in love with this dish. They also offer a free soup and bread table that I didn't take advantage of, but it was there and it was being used by the other customers. The waitress was very friendly but took a little longer than I would have liked. Luckily it was empty in the restaurant and my son could run around while we waited for our check. This wouldn't have worked if it were busier. I also came here with my best friend and husband on a Saturday night. We called ahead and got reservations and I'm glad that we did. Even with the reservations, we arrived at 5:40pm for a 6:00pm reservation and wasn't seated until after 6:30pm. That was a bit frustrating but I felt it was worth the wait. We ordered lamb pops for an appetizer and the mozzarella sticks. Both were delicious. Our entrees were great, and we ordered some seasonal drinks which were very tasty. My complaint is the timing. It took us forever to get our food and even longer to get our check. We watched our waitress having an at length conversation with a customer who she knew outside of the restaurant while we sat waiting for our checks, our left over food already packed in containers to go. She then came by us, walked past our table twice and then said "I thought I left your check already" and tried to rush off but my husband had his card ready to give her so she couldn't leave us there forever again with the check. I understand this place gets busy on the weekends but that's no excuse for the service to be slowed down because the waitress wants to have lengthy conversations while others are waiting to be served. I would give this a 2 star rating but the food is so incredible and priced right that I just can't, no matter how terrible the service is. My tip: Go for lunch or during the week.
