Food really good, seems to have a very loyal base of regulars. Staff attentive and friendly. Understated surroundings and concise wine list

Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.

I went with the roast chicken breast which of course is all sorts of fancy on the menu. "Grange farm chicken, crispy colcannon, creamed celeriac, summer greens." It was presented perfectly and I cleared the plate. Delicious. The winner at the table was the lamb rump, served with a basil mash, ratatouille and confit lamb belly. Looked great, smelled great. Service was top notch. Wine list was decently extensive. And the desserts also looked amazing. Definitely a top notch meal and probably the fanciest I had in all of Ireland. The dining room was painted dark warm tones and had the feel of a cabin. We were seated immediately and placed an order for cocktails. Our table got the blood orange margarita, old fashioned, and white peach martini. The drinks were incredibly tasty and were such a hit that we ordered another round. For our main food, we got the house bread which came warm and crispy and was paired with delicious bread and olive tamponade. We also got the beef dumplings which in my opinion were not dumplings, but closer to a perogi. They were crispy and umami. Two of us got the chicken main and the other two got the pasta with beef cheek/mushroom and the fish with clams. Everything was amazing! All proteins were juicy and succulent; all veggies were prepared perfectly and seasoned well; and all carbs were complimentary to the dishes. To finish our experience, we ended with the mind blowing sticky toffee pudding. I have no words. I understand why this is such a popular dessert in the UK. WOW. Home was a 10/10 and completely deserved the Michelin recognition. We hope all travelers give this restaurant a chance - it will blow you away.

It seems weird that I haven't yet reviewed Solo, this is because I have always attended events at…read moreSolo and not actually had a genuine meal experience, that is until yesterday... The interior of Solo is sophisticated, without being overly fancy - this is a good thing, it has a real feeling of diversity - you get the impression that you could go in and feel comfortable having a meal in jeans and a T-shirt as well as a business suit. There's a real warmth to the staff, they always engage in a wee bit of banter and are always on hand to help you out with a smile. The menu is diverse, you can have Asian style food, Tapas or classics like a burger. Yesterday I opted for a starter of Salted Chili Chicken and I think I convinced most of my table to join me. The salted chili chicken is truly amazing, it's gourmet style so get the idea of a takeaway out of your head. The flavours are epic and the the dip on the side compliments the chicken perfectly. For main I went for a steak sandwich, when ordering I was asked how I wanted my steak cooked, even by asking this question it shows the chef has real pride in his food regardless of what it is! The steak came out cooked exactly to my specification, it was accompanied by a a side salad and rustic chips - perfect for what I wanted! Solo is the type of place that you could easily lose track of time in, it's got that stay bar type feel. If you're looking for somewhere for a big group then look no further the staff are easily capable of dealing with large groups! Top notch all round!

The afternoon tea here wasn't just finger sandwiches and scones, it was like a full meal. The first tier had mini pulled pork burgers, deep fried Brie and samosas. The second tier has coronation chicken sandwiches, bruschetta with cheese and cherry tomatoes and wheaten bread with cheese and smoked salmon. It was all delicious - after all that I felt so stuffed but managed a few bites from the third tier which had mini scones with clotted cream and jam, chocolate fudge cake and fresh stawberries. It all absolutely delicious. I never ordered any tea or coffee with my the afternoon tea but we did have a mango and strawberry daiquiri each which we enjoyed. Another great experience at Solo Restaurant!
