I discovered The Soop through GrubHub. I was craving Korean food and it had good reviews all around. The first time ordered the Bi bim bap and Bulgogi beef. The dishes came and were not just good, but frigging delicious. There were fresh, crunchy vegetables, the incredible beef, and plenty of rice. My boys, who can be annoyingly picky, cleaned their plates. I had never been to the actual restaurant, because it is not in an area I regularly find myself. My son had a medical appointment right on NW 22nd, so we left early and headed to The Soop. I will always order their food to be delivered, it is my Korean ride-or-die. That said, the food is just that much better if you dine in. The space is odd and feels half done - the display of microgreens is now just containers, as far as I can see. Folks - none of that matters! Start eating your food, and the place starts to feel downright charming. I've been watching far too many K-dramas, and had recently seen a few with characters making their own Pajeon - a savory, huge scallion pancake. I decided to try this myself. I got a side of kimchi. It really was huge the size of the plate it was served on, and still I almost finished it!! The prices are good for better-than-most food. I have brought friends there several times, and ordered delivery for a group. My friends have loved the food, and asked how I found it. If this was in SE, where I live, it would be packed. Maybe I'm glad it isn't so I can get my pajeon without a big wait. Next time you're craving some Korean food, trust me, the Soop is where you should get it from. This restaurant was very near our hotel by Providence Park, and I bookmarked it because of the solid reviews. A nice bright modern dining room, there were a few tables occupied at 2pm when we came in for lunch. You order at the counter then take a table. I wasn't hugely hungry so after perusing the menu I decided to try the beef Kimbap ($10 plus $2 for beef). I had never had Kimbap, and it seemed like the perfect snack, with rice, meat, veggies all rolled up like big sushi. I loved the micro greens, carrots and red cabbage in this roll. The dip was good, although it caused some of the roll to fall apart. Husband chose the bulgogi meat set, and it was huge! It came with a sizzling iron skillet of beef, rice and all the traditional banchan sides (which was a new experience for him). I sampled the spinach, cucumber and kimchi and all were excellent! I couldn't bring myself to taste the wilted bean sprouts, although I guess they are traditional. He devoured the tender meat and rice, no leftovers! He wanted some soy sauce, and had a very long wait before any staff wanderered through the dining area to help us. Water station is a bit confusing but good filtered water. The Soop has been on my list for a while, and I finally got the chance to try it! The soup was good though the mushroom felt a bit out of the ordinary. The paste in the soup also felt a little too grainy and not fully mixed in with it. I would say it'a definitely worth a try as it's very unique, but not the best I've has. The teokkpokki was great though! The sauce was very good with the rice cakes and the egg and gyoza brought it all together well! The store itself is in a bit of a weird place with a parking lot and a parking garage nearby, so only if you're familiar with the area, is it easy to park nearby. We were planning on having friends join us for lunch, in the near future. We thought, we'd check it out first, if it's something they like. I don't think so. For the following reasons: 1. The parking is OK, but there's the elevator, there's walking and trying to find which way to turn for the restaurant door. 2. They like sit-in, and order their food, not get in line. 3. There's no knife. No fork. No spoon. You get chopsticks and serving spoons. You ask for utensils. 4. Water bottle comes in a large sippy bottle, something plastic with a screw top. With a funky frog sticker. Something childish. The women are seniors, they wouldn't appreciate something like that for their water. 5. They don't like microgreens! The Beef Bulgugi and everything else was yummy, after they gave us extra vegetable, that wasn't spicy. An order was perfect for sharing, for 2. Even the Korean pancake with ice cream. I tried The Soop for the first time for some comfort food. The food presentation and the staff's hospitality were wonderful. The tteokbokki had a good flavor, though the sauce was a bit too sticky and heavy for my taste--some pickled radish on the side would have balanced it perfectly. The stews looked amazing at the other tables and the banchan (side dishes) seemed very well put together, so I'd love to try a jjigae next time. I do have a small piece of constructive feedback regarding the ambiance. The indoor plant/vegetable growing area--which looked so lovely in past photos--seems to have been neglected and was a bit untidy, causing a few fruit flies to buzz around. I always feel so proud and happy when I find a Korean restaurant that nails both great food and a clean, beautiful aesthetic. Staff is always friendly and cant go wrong with their food. I usually get the BLT for lunch with cucumber but this time did the bulgogi sando with cucumber. The bread got a bit soggy from the bulgogi but still held together. I was seeking a restaurant which served Japchae in downtown Portland, Oregon, and this came up as a highly rated restaurant which does. Well parking was a little difficult, the restaurant was clean and bright and open. Staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered my japchae with the Bulgogi beef - options included, tofu, spicy pork, chicken, and more. I also decided to have a ginger beer since fresh brewed tea was not available. My food came out in a relatively short time. It was lovely and smelled great. It tasted very good and I had the option of using either metal Korean chopsticks or a fork. Food came out fast and service was friendly. We were disappointed in the quality of food relative to the price, especially compared with the positive ratings on Yelp and Google. It is possible they had a bad day, since so many people on here rave about the food. We were surprised. We went here because it is conveniently close to Washington Park. The pajeon (pancake) was deep fried instead of pan-fried. It was squishy and raw in the middle and saturated with oil. I sopped up the oil with a napkin, like some people do with pizza. It didn't have the chewy texture I'm used to from mom'n'pop style Korean restaurants. Some ingredient in the kimbap was so salty that it burned the tongue. I couldn't tell what, but I think maybe the salt wasn't stirred evenly into the spinach; some pieces were salt bombs and others seemed fine. They call this place "farm to table" because they sprout microgreens (mostly sunflower sprouts) in the window. It's a nice concept to grow one's own microgreens, but I think "farm to table" sounds like an exaggeration. Do the eggs come from a local farm, or any other ingredients, or is it just the sunflower sprouts? The food was expensive and not consistent with Portland standards, in light of the competition with many good restaurants in this foodie city. read more

So we came here mid-November and were in the tteokbokki mood. We quickly yelped the area and found The Soop! The location was near Providence Park and fairly easy to find. It was kind of tricky to navigate as it's located along a main road. In other words, street parking, so keep your eyes peeled. Unless you plan to watch a game at the stadium, then paid parking is a mere walking distance. Loved the openness of the place as well as some of the decor. The dining area was small yet clean, and I did see the owners cleaning up after folks. A huge plus in my book! The hydroponics that were growing microgreens were also a big highlight to see all around and in their greenhouse. Quite impressive I'd say! Our order: ~ Tteokbokki OF COURSE!!! ($15) mmm, mmm, cravings satisfied! The rice cakes were fluffy, and the sauce was on point! It's one of the best tastings tteokbokkis I've had in a while. ~ Korean Fried Chicken Wings ($17), sweet and spicy. A weee bit tiny for wings and large on price, but still flavorful. Not your typical KFC, but again "satisfying" to say the least. But it's not something I'd order again tbh. ~ Bibimbap ($13 + $3 spicy pork), now THIS WAS MOUTHWATERING GOODNESS!!! The veggies and spicy pork were simply magic! I mixed and combined it all up to perfection. ~ My only regret is not trying their bibimbap with store-grown microgreens. How did I miss seeing that on the menu? Oh well, it gives me a reason to go back and try their microgreens nachos, fried chicken sandwich, japchae, and kimbap. After lunch, we discovered the 'other' dining area. Or the bar and lounge area adjacent to it. Seemed like a great place to throw a Yelp party (hint hint to Sarah C). I was snooping around and met the manager of both places, Peter. He seemed like a really cool guy. I came here for brunch one day and absolutely loved it. Although I got confused by which door to enter at first, I found out that it's the one facing the main street (I headed in from the back, as there is no parking and I had to street park). The restaurant is set up where you order at the counter, sit, and then there's a robot that brings your food to you (although it seems to make mistakes sometimes, it's really cute and just be patient. :) ). My friend and I ordered different versions of their bbibimbap and it was delicious. The portions were so big and each portion came with sesame oil and gochujang (which few places bring out both for you!!) and the veggies were so fresh. Bulgoki was dry, but as part of the lettuce wrap, still tasted pretty good. Next time I would get the other option with spicy pork. Would be great if they have pork belly option. For the Samm, there were several different lettuce,, three different types of sprouts, and perilla leaves. Kimbap was bit dry as well, but overall solid. We are both Korean and were impressed by all the food that we ordered, with Korean food being so hot these days there are a lot of copycats but this was definitely authentic. It was cool to see that they grew their own veggies. The interior was very spacious and high ceilings and they had relaxing music on as well. This spot is a true hidden gem in downtown Portland, right on the edge of the Pearl District and Uptown. The space is open and airy, filled with natural light from the tall windows, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Our family had an amazing meal--especially the bibimbap and spicy soontofu. My significant other did get his food and it was great he said. It was their soft opening of their bar side and I don't think it was timed well with the game. Glad to see a Korean spot that is casual and classic instead of made fusion or fancy like many places in portland. They offer bibimbap as well as several other Korean classics like Duckbokki, kimbab, galbi, and even ones you don't see commonly like Japchae & Budaejjigae which is like real home cooking. We tried the following: - Tuna Kimbab ($8): tasty but seems pricey to me but maybe that's just cause I'm used to them being less than a dollar in korea. Don't be expecting raw tuna like at Japanese sushi restaurants tho, this is canned tuna. It's better than it sounds especially with kimchi, don't knock it til you try it. - Duckbokki: not spicy and more sweet, but still pretty tasty. It had all the fixins: boiled egg, odang (fish cake) and even a couple fried mandu. - Bibimbap: we just got plain w/ no meat and it was pretty tasty for not being a bibimbap only house (but those are kind of only in korea). Also they have like a whole hydroponic garden of micro greens which they use in their dishes which is cool and the UV lights add a cool purple vibe to the restaurant. Great food, very reminiscent of Korean highway rest stop fare (which I realize may sound like an insult to those of you who have never dined at a Korean rest stop). read more

We've come here to eat twice, and it's been pleasant each time! The first time, ordered a dolsot and a micro green bibimbap, and the second time a dolsot bibimbap and a fried chicken sandwich. I think we will stick to just bibimbaps though since the fried chicken sandwich was disappointing. Their shrimp rice bowl is so delicious - smoky and spicy sauce with fried egg, fresh spinach and garlicky squash and carrot with just perfectly cooked shrimp. I can't recommend this place enough.
