Atmosphere: I enjoyed the atmosphere here. Felt sit-downy enough but also casual at the same time. Food: Enjoyed the Five-Spiced Peppery Broth Noodles. There was an ample amount of meat and plenty of garlic in the dish. Price: Bowls are around $16, which is what you come to expect from noodle soup places these days. Service: Service was fine Parking: Street parking
Guay Tiew is a newer Thai noodle shop with a lot of good press in recent weeks. It was intriguing enough that we decided to visit for lunch on a Sunday while we were down in Portland. Walking in a couple of minutes after they opened, we were the 3rd party to be seated. We found the the interior to nicely designed with a kitchen that actually does look like a hawker stall. They expect orders via QR code at each table, but they don't have wifi. Also, when we visited, I think the servers didn't have the table numbers memorized yet - there were multiple mishaps delivering food and drinks to the incorrect tables. One last comment before delving into the food - Guay Tiew gives really high quality disposable chopsticks. They might actually be reusable. 27. HOUSE CURRY, Egg Noodles ($17) - The star of this dish has to be the broth. In this case, rich and heavenly with a strong curry paste base mixed with a umamiful porky flavor. It has a slight spice component, barely noticeable as a small amount of warmth, but then descends into a somewhat overwhelming sweetness. It's so, so sweet, very similar to generic Khao Soi broths that can be found all over in American Thai restaurants. I have a feeling that most places use the exact same ratios of coconut milk, curry paste, and sugar, because at this point, the taste feels so generic. I've never visited Thailand before, but I can't imagine this dish is this sweet in Thailand. Just as a comparison point, I find Malaysian laksa in the US to be way sweeter than in Malaysia. In this dish, the only hint of acidity is from some pickled mustard greens, but there's such a small amount it basically does nothing. There are also some raw bean sprouts, fried garlic soaking in the rich broth, and yu choy, still very vegetal and crunchy from being only briefly blanched before adding to the broth. Otherwise the dish comes with a virtual cornucopia of meats, which differentiates Guay Tiew from other American Thai noodle shops. There are a couple of spirals of crispy pork cracklins, then another couple of short julienned-like pieces as well. There's the expertly braised pork, so tender it almost falls apart by itself. There are pork "meatballs" - basically tender and slightly bouncy pork cubes, almost resembling a Vietnamese cha lua ham, but a bit less bouncy and without the fish sauce umami. There's finally a slice of minced pork, mixed with rice vermicelli, a bit softer than spam in texture, with plenty of porky umami. The egg noodles are recommended and go perfectly with the dish. They are thin and curly, probably only 1mm in width, giving plenty of eggy bounce to the dish. (4/5) 21. GUAY TIEW RUEA, Thin Noodles ($16) - I have not eaten Boat Noodles before in the past. After getting this dish, I think I know why. Guay Tiew's menu states the broth is a "rich, spicy herbal brown broth." Upon getting to the table, I could smell a somewhat funky, yet umamiful dish. The broth is dark brown, the color of rich soil. My first thought was tamarind paste given the color and propensity of this ingredient in Thai dishes. Then the taste - oh yeah, this is pig blood. I've eaten my share of pig blood, mostly due to being polite at Dim Sum places, and I can emphatically say that I don't like the substance. And that's probably why I've never ordered Boat Noodles before - my guess is other restaurants actually describe the dish as using a pork blood base. Anyways, given my dislike, I can't actually properly rate the dish. The broth is spicy, salty, tangy, sweet and full of umami. It's smoky, it's porky, it's mineral forward, rich with an undercurrent of medicinal herbs, but that blood taste really gets to me! In this dish, the minced pork patty actually soaks up a lot of the herbal and blood flavor. Otherwise, it comes with pretty much the same toppings as the house curry other than the pickled mustard greens. We ordered this with the thin noodles, which surprisingly came cut up into small segments. It makes the noodles easy to eat with a spoon, I suppose, similar to Katong Laksa. It's always nice seeing a place open up that tries to specialize in a small number of dishes rather than offering up a huge menu as most American Thai restaurants do. It helps give Guay Tiew a distinguishing factor that separates it out from the competition. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms.
Top 3 Thai I've had in the area. Literally so good. I got the 5 -Spice Peppery Broth (not spicy at all) and gluten free rice noodles. Ordered takeout- the staff was super friendly. Food came out quick and packaged nicely for me to walk back to my hotel. The odd meat cube (like a meat ball) in the soup that I thought was tofu but was actually pork was delicious and surprising
it's a wonderful and convivial location in the Pearl District for lunch or dinner. Large rollup doors open out to the courtyard when the weather is good. Speaking of good, service was very accommodating and handled a special side dish requested. I loved the egg noodle and tofu with mustard greens. Delish broth. Nice in-house made sauces to take it up a notch with the heat. Pork spring rolls were so good. Very crunchy and crispy on the outside. Sourcing ingredients from NW farmers that grow Asian type produce. I know this because I saw the delivery truck out front one morning. I prefer local. And I like that the restaurant wants to support local too. Definitely coming back!
This is not your average Thai spot with curries, fried rice and wok noodles. They specialize in Thai noodle soups. You get to pick your broth base then noodle type. There are optional add-ons for extra but I felt like the default toppings of bean sprouts, leafy greens and pork rinds was plenty. I got the five spiced pepper broth which was a non-spicy broth. The flavor had herbal notes and was dense and savory and melded well with the rice noodles. I loved the mango sticky rice cocktail I got as well. It was fragrant with pandan, mango and coconut flavors and wasn't too sweet. The drink was super refreshing paired with the noodle soup. The interior of the space is very eye-catching. The neon lights and bright decor really makes it feel like I'm in Asia.
It was quick to get a table of 2. I really enjoyed the vegan options. We started off with the spring roll. It was a bit dry, but I would prioritize getting entrees over appetizers. You can't go wrong with ordering any of the noodle soups! We ordered the curry noodle soup and vegan yen ta fo.The cocktails were affordable compared to most restaurants downtown. Love the decor with the street style design and neon lights.
We had an absolutely incredible experience here! When you enter, they have you sign in and wait to be seated. Because it was pretty much empty, we were sat right away. The hostess walked us through how to order in detail-- you scan a QR code and order that way, but they bring your food to you and bus your table. There's a water station and to-go containers available as well. I felt like the hostess was super friendly and made sure we were comfortable ordering, and assured us we could come order directly if we got confused. I was so excited to see that a ton of their menu can be made vegan! A lot of places limit broth options especially, but that wasn't the case here. Their menu is very clear about what is and is not vegan, and about allergens-- I rarely see it spelled out this cleanly, and it was much appreciated! We ordered three drinks. The Bangkok Mule was excellent, the Chrysanthemum Tea was lovely and had that very sweet honey come through well. The Mango Rice stole the show-- it actually tastes like, well, mango sticky rice, but it was strong and refreshing as well. I highly recommend. My partner got the namesake-- Guay Tiew Ruea. He thought it was wonderful. Every variation of their pork was cooked well, including the mince, which is often hit or miss. I ordered the Ya Ta Fo, and was blown away. It is the PERFECT spring/summer dish, very light, acidic, and savory. It also has the added bonus of dying the noodles and tofu pink! Truly, one of the best Thai dishes I have ever had. They also brought out some hot sauce and chili crisp. A staff member talked us through what the hot sauce was (habanero vinegar) and advised us to add slowly. The chili crisp was a delightful addition to my noodles, and my partner liked the hot sauce in his (the vinegar brightened everything nicely). I greatly enjoyed dipping our spring rolls in the hot sauce too. Overall, an excellent meal. I walk by this building nearly every day, so I've been anxiously anticipating the opening of the restaurant. How exciting that it lives up to the hype!
Overall a great spot to grab a quick lunch or dinner with friends! The amount of food you get is a lot. I got the original thai boat noodle soup with the rice noodles and it was great! The only downside is that the broth is not super hot and my noodles were overcooked. The textures of the bowl were on the soft/mushy side. I loved the wonton snack, but would pass on the egg rolls. Interior of the shop is so cute! Workers are all very kind.
Came here with a couple of friends for lunch. None of us had been here before. For some reason, when I think of Thai food and noodles, I think of Pad Thai. To my surprise, they do not have that here. I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't order my usual go to dish. What do you mean I actually need to look at the menu and pick something new? The menu was simple: decide between a rice dish or a soup-based dish. If you choose a soup-based dish, remember to pick your noodle type, or the default will be the "See Mee" (very thin rice vermicelli noodles). After a long debate, we picked the recommended dishes: 21) Guay Tiew Ruea ($16) and 12) Braised Pork and Rice ($15). To my surprise, both dishes had wonderful flavors, and the ingredients complemented each other well. My Braised Pork and Rice was wonderful. The pork was delicious, tender, and melted in your mouth without being too dry. The sauce mixed into the rice was super yummy, but lesson learned: MIX before you EAT! Otherwise, the sauce settles at the bottom and half of the rice misses out on the flavor. I also absolutely loved the ginger and pickled mustard greens in my dish, which were not mentioned on the menu. It was a lovely surprise because they paired very well with the dish. I would also like to mention that the food here is not greasy or oily either. I approve. They have a paper menu for you to look at, but you place your order through the table's QR code. Payment is through the QR code as well. Ice water is self-serve at the water station, along with to go containers when you're done. They will bring your food to the table and buss it when you're finished eating. Service and interaction with the staff are very minimal. Street parking is available. You'll need to pay at the meters or through Parking Kitty. Food came out pretty fast. One hour of parking is a little tight but doable. If you want to hang out with friends and enjoy a relaxing meal, I'd recommend planning for about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes of parking. I will return to try some of their other dishes soon!
I love the inside of this spot! Vibrant and casual and easy to order. We chose two different broths and two different noodles for the same soup. It was delicious and comforting and I need to try all of the broth selections. The yum Thai salad was outstanding! Tangy, salty, excellent textures. Definitely order that.
Cute place, food was good. Appetizer was okay, too many similar flavors with the other dishes. I didn't realize the that before ordering. The signature dishes were very tasty and flavorful. Nice to have a Thai restaurant that is different and distinct from other places.
I've been here a couple of times for lunch now and both times have been good. The food is consistent and the flavors are on point. I like the boat noodles the best. The curry one was also good and good well with the egg noodles. The tender pork basil stir fry was delicious but was a bit spicy for me this time (I think it may have been the peppers), still worth getting. The service here is pretty quick as you can order from the QR code or up at the counter. On the weekdays, they are only open for lunch on Friday, which is a bummer.
Lovely northern style Thai food from the same family as Khao Moo Dang. I ordered the guay tiew haang dry with egg noodles. Egg noodles are the best option IMO. I had a sip of the curry and the tom yum broths and they seemed solid. I love how every dry noodle dish comes with a side of broth. It is a MUST HAVE. Prices were reasonable at $16. I enjoyed the extra fried crunchy twisty bits. Good variety of toppings with plenty of bok choy veggies. Portion size was good. Food came out in ~10 mins. Pretty happy overall and would come back. As a big Khao Moo Dang lover, this hit the spot and is a couple bucks cheaper too. Although I still think Khao Moo Dang is better since they have crispy pork! read more
It's hard to find a place with a good bowl of boat noodle around here so I was excited to try this place. I ordered the classic boat noodle and a tom yum noodle to share with my friend. I wish they gave you an option for spice levels but the meat was the most tender I've ever had in boat noodles. The tom yum was also good but lacked a bit of acidity. Service was pretty good too. When we sat down, the server asked if it was our first time and kind of went over the menu with us. You scan the code on the table to order and the water station is on the side. You just pay before submitting your order. Ambiance is fairly loud and they have an open kitchen and open garage door style. I would come back here for boat noodles again. read more
plenty of seating, self order on your phone by scanning qr code or order at cashier. love the design and decor of the restaurant - asia street food vibes! i got the guay tiew ruea and tried the tom yom broth and and house curry. everything tasted amazing!! the guay tiew ruea had a multiple protein and plenty of them too! i can appreciate a dish where theres plenty of protein and veggies!! the broth tastes like a mix of bò kho & phở. only complaint is that the broth on it's own is kinda really salty (only noticed when i tried the brothe rafter eating everything) but its perfect with the noodles, proteins, and veggies!! 10/10 would go again!! read more

On a chilly day in Portland, I was craving a warm, comforting meal that felt homemade, and that's how I came across this ramen spot. It was close to closing time, but thankfully they were still serving, so I decided to walk in.Since it was my first visit, I asked the staff for a recommendation and ended up ordering the House Curry. It was absolutely delicious. The bowl was generous in size, and as someone who rarely finishes an entire meal, I was happy to have leftovers to enjoy the next day.One thing I really appreciated was that they keep takeout containers on a counter, so you can pack up your leftovers yourself without having to ask for a box. What stood out to me most was how vegetarian- and vegan-friendly the menu is. Almost every dish can be made vegan, which gives you so many options. The curry had just the right amount of spice and was exactly the comforting meal I was looking for. I left feeling full, happy, and already looking forward to the leftovers. The staff was also incredibly friendly, which made the whole experience even better. read more

Overall, pretty good experience. I like the flavor for broth and the diversity of topping. I've been to Thailand before, and I enjoy how restaurant is Decor very street Thai style. I personally don't like their salad and the meat ball a lot. The meatball is a little bit soft for my taste. The salad is too simple. The restaurant is not very kid friendly because I tried to find changing table for my baby and there's no changing table in the bathroom. read more

I really like the simplicity of the place with easy ordering and very quick order delivery. The mango sticky rice cocktail was nice and light but left something to be desired. All the ingredients are very nicely done and was pleasantly surprised by the minced pork patty as it stayed together not falling apart becoming a pain like happens at some other places. Staff was friendly and restaurant aestherics are fun. read more

Spring rolls were crispy and flaky on the outside and filled with minced pork on the inside. Not greasy at all and good. The curry was not hot (temp or spice), the egg noodles were really good and piping hot so warmed up the curry a bit. The pork in the stir fry was tender and generous in serving. The poached egg was yummy and added a nice creaminess to the dish. My fave was the broth that came with the stir fry. Water is self serve, you order and pay through your phone. They will bus the tables. read more

The interior of this place is so cute, looks great at night time! I got to try their Guay tiew ruea and hibiscus & tequila drink. Both were good, my favorite was mango sticky rice drink. The service was quick, and I was able to order through phone by scanning a QR code at my seat. It was super convenient and quick. read more
I visited Guay Tiew recently and I was genuinely surprised by the atmosphere, as I found the place is much nicer than I thought it would be. I really appreciated the convenience of ordering using the QR code on the table and being able to pay right away, which made the whole process so seamless. I started with the dish shown in image.png, which was a great way to begin the meal. I also ordered the pork meatball and the curry noodle soup. I thought the flavors were excellent, and I couldn't resist trying the dry noodles as well. I am happy to give this spot a 4/5 rating because I had such a positive experience. read more

A flavorful, easy-to-navigate menu with a wide range of broths, noodles, and add-ons, along with stir-fry dishes, spring rolls, and more. Everything feels thoughtfully balanced and cohesive, with each dish delivering on flavor without being overwhelming. Don't skip the cane sugar drink either--it's delicious. The ambiance adds to the experience. Clean, comfortable seating is framed by large windows, with checkered tables that make for great photo moments, plus street-style lighting and neon accents that give the space a fun, modern edge. You really can't go wrong here, but a few favorites stood out: the pork spring rolls, the house curry broth with ba-Mhee (egg noodles), and the Yen Ta Fo broth. The ordering process is simple and efficient. Upon arrival, you add your name to a clipboard and are greeted shortly after. The host walked us through the menu, ordering system, and self-serve water stations, which made everything feel seamless. When you're ready, you place your order by scanning the QR code at your table, then sit back and relax. Our food arrived in about 20 minutes, even with the restaurant about half full. Another detail we appreciated--you can close out your tab and head out whenever you're ready, without waiting for a check, and the staff clears the table after you leave. Overall, a really pleasant first visit. We'll definitely be back. read more

We had no plans to eat, but we stumbled across this lovely gem while strolling down the sidewalk. Upon looking at the menu, the cool streat decor, and the overall vibe, we had to stop and try it. Sure glad we did, because the experience was pretty fantastic. We were immediately seated, ordered on our phones from the QR and it wasn't long before we were served. This particular Thai offering is considered Thailand's street staple foot. I had the boat noodle, number 21, Guay Tiew Ruea with poached egg and egg noodle. I also had the Gin, Basil, Lemongrass cocktail. My wife had number 25, guay jab, with thin rice noodles. Her cocktail was the sticky rice cocktail. The broth, noodles, and remaining ingredients all came together to make a most enjoyable meal. Each with its own unique flavor and texture, it will be awesome to try another version on the next visit. We didn't dig into sides/appetizers at all this time, but will make sure to do so on the nex trip. Overall, the experience was more than satisfying, a super great value, and the staff was very helpful and kind. Wish this new business well and will definitely be coming back! read more
