Langbaan is a fantastic, special-occasion destination. The tasting menu, accompanied by wine pairings, made for a memorable evening. We were lucky enough to get counter seating for our reservation, so we got to watch both the activity in the kitchen, and the team that was plating all the courses on the other side of the the counter where we sat. The variety and creativity were spectacular. One example was a dish that looked like Pad Thai, but the 'noodles' were made from sliced squid. Each of the 12 items in the 5 total courses were described in great detail as they were being served. Portion size ranged from exquisite small bites to bordering on entree sizes. All in all, everything added up to a perfect amount of food for the evening. I was pleasantly surprised by being able to get a reservation on relatively short notice, so if you've been considering the Langbaan experience, don't be discouraged by reports of how much lead time it can take to get a table. read more

. Honestly, probably a high 3 / low 4 for us. The experience and presentation were great, and all of our servers were awesome. But overall, the food itself was just okay. Some dishes leaned pretty salty, and the gelatinous fish dish was probably our least favorite. A few of the curry/stew-style dishes also felt like they would've been better paired with rice or sticky rice. The mains were decent, but nothing that really wowed us. We also added the lobster and oysters--the oysters were great, but the lobster felt extremely small for the $45 upcharge. We came here for my partner's birthday in March. We were looking forward to it, since we really enjoyed our meal the last time we came, but we left disappointed. Here's the thing, the price is worth it if you love every dish, which was the case the first time. But this past time, there were very few dishes that we were wowed by. Our favorites were the appetizers and dessert. The service while friendly, also felt a bit disjointed. It didn't feel worth the price this time around. I'd just recommend going if you preview the menu and each dish sounds delicious. Plus, Earl has so many other great restaurants to check out. I couldn't help but think that we could've gone to Yaorawat or Eem and ordered more, and enjoyed the meal more, for a fraction of the price. read more

This is located in the same restaurant as Phuket Cafe. There is a bar section. For dinner, they only do the fixe menu with multi-course in small portions. The main course is a fish with garnish and sauce that you wrap yourself. It ends with dessert. The ambience here is very low lit and beautiful. It's definitely a special occasion place, and when we looked around, it seemed that everyone was celebrating their birthdays. This place has been on our list for years and it was such a nice and beautiful presentation. It's unique in which it's like a team project and everyone needs to show up on time before they can start serving. They choreographed the meal well to where the speed of dishes coming out was done nicely. The food itself was very unique and delicious, and I felt satiated after the whole meal and corresponding courses. Three of the courses are shared so my partner ate more of it than I do and was full. I'll definitely return again in the future. It'll be sometime as it is quite an investment to eat here but a nice experience and delicious food. read more

Not living anymore in Portland makes it even more challenging and of course after getting the shout out from James Beard next to impossible. Lang Baan isn't dinner, it's an experience. Each of the menu items are carefully created with intention, the various Thai flavors and ingredients coming together like a symphony on your palette. Or a dance for your tastebuds. Superb. Lucky to be invited to a private event, we were greeted at the door with a cocktail and had a chance to mingle in the very cozy bar area before taking our seats. The 12 course meal, many just small bites, was varied and gave us a well rounded representation of this type of Thai food and the chef's skills. Actually, the entire staff's skills. Everything executed like a well rehearsed play. Each item was plated so artistically, the fresh ingredients vibrant against the dark platters. We eat with all of our senses and when each dish anrrived, we were oohhing and ahhhing before we even tasted them! Now, not every course worked for me - just being honest. We all have our preferences for flavors and textures. For example, the Yom Nam Dum, clams in cuttlefish broth with coconut, sunchoke and Thai chile was a texture and taste that I didn't find appealing. However, the Maing Som - shrimp, Cara Cara orange, peanuts, coconut on a betal leaf, I could eat a dozen! It all works when you are with others because the food is served family style, so what didn't appeal to me, was devoured by my friends. And vice versa. The Chu Chee, chicken red curry, was spicy and delicious. As was the crispy pork belly with mango and watermelon radish (Yum Sam Grob.) Both perfect with the jasmine rice cooked with black beans. I could eat that rice everyday! Spicy, sour, salty, sweet and bitter - the dishes represented the five flavors of Thailand, and the reason I love Thai food. These dishes are not what you would find in the majority of Thai restaurants where Pad Thai and curry dishes reign supreme. Beautiful, artful, amazing dishes. In the TV series quantum Leap, there's a quote that says dining is the only art that uses all five senses. Things are beautiful. The dishes came with stories depending on who served it. I wanted the two add-ons because I liked those foods the best. I'm really annoyed that the two add-ons were the most delicious part of me on the period. I was not impressed with the other dishes, but they were beautiful and overall good. There was one dish on the scallop plate that was so delicious. I wanted to ask them if I could have a second serving. But it's too embarrassing to ask. From the ambience, the service, the menu, & the attention to every little detail over the course of a 2 hour tasting menu experience is the best way to describe having a meal here. I booked a bar spot for an 8:15 seating on a Friday night weeks in advance as a treat yo self gift to myself after climbing Mt Saint Helens & biking a significant portion of the gorge over the previous two days. This was my last meal in Portland & I wanted it to be something special & it was. I arrived about 30 mins early to have a drink at Phuket Cafe & was seated on the outside window bar & told I would be moved inside for my service at Langbaan once the setup for dinner service was completed. I had a Thai tea & watched the staff work like seasoned tacticians to prepare the inside space for the service. I was moved inside & took my seat at the bar & introduced to Molly who was working the bar along with another coworker. She said she would be with those of us at the bar to walk us through the menu throughout the night as we enjoyed ourselves. She was a delight & very attentive the entire service. Obviously the food is the main reason to come here & it didn't disappoint. I opted to include both of the additional courses for the night A Pair of Oysters $8 & a5 wagyu ribeye $45. Having had wagyu in Japan years ago the portion served here for $45 was well worth it if you've never had it. The oysters were exceptional and dressed with Yuzu, thai chili, lime leaf, shallots, sesame. For $8 that's a no brainer. Of the many delectable courses served (there was so much food!) my favorite two were the Hokkaido Scallop & the squab of the two courses included in the main assortment. If I'm including the add ons then it's much harder to rank. I did have one cocktail during the meal, the rocket pop (Irish Whiskey, Coconut Caramel, Peychaud's Cordial, Pineapple, Mint ) It was refreshing & stout. I've been to Thailand but never the Isan region featured in the menu curation. Everything was of the highest quality & beautifully presented. There were items I would never order or even know of served & that's the great thing about an experience like this. Langbaan was the sole reason for my trip to Portland, and I would do it again without hesitation. The dining room is beautifully done. Low lighting, calm energy, and just enough ambient sound to feel lively without becoming loud. Service was warm, friendly, and polished throughout, and I was greeted with a happy birthday, which felt sincere and personal. The menu was consistently strong, with several standout moments. The tom kha, presented in a panna cotta form, was remarkable. It melted instantly and delivered a concentrated, layered explosion of flavor, paired with cured salmon that tasted incredibly fresh and precise in one bite. Pad ped pla was deeply satisfying and well-balanced, and the rice cake dessert closed the meal on a high note. The wine program deserves special mention. The sommelier was knowledgeable and approachable. I enjoyed a Jacquère earlier in the meal, and later they brought a glass of Merlot specifically to complement the main course, which paired beautifully. What stood out most was the storytelling behind each dish. Everything felt intentional and cohesive from start to finish. Service 5/5 -- Servers offered to hang up my coat, were very attentive, refilled our waters several times, gave detailed descriptions about each course, were very friendly and personable, and brought me a birthday candle and card :) Ambiance 4/5 -- would be a great spot for a date! Came to Portland for a work event and saw this place was highly recommended online. Glad I was able to snag a reservation. Langbaan is a truly exceptional dining experience. As someone who has dined at many fine dining and Michelin star establishments, this place is easily one of the best I've ever had and definitely my favorite on my trip to Portland. We arrived early, and the hostess was fantastic, letting us enjoy a pre-dinner drink on the heated patio. The drinks were all amazing, but the standout for me was the Sun-Kissed Icarus. Highly recommend. The vibe is intimate and special; definitely try to snag a seat at the Chef's Table to watch them work! A special shout-out to the service: Every server was extremely kind, attentive, and highly informative, explaining every complex dish in detail. The food was incredible, showcasing complex and vibrant flavors: My personal favorite bites: * Tom Kati Noh Maai (100/10): My favorite dish of the night. The squid was perfectly cooked (not chewy), and the dish was complex, rich, and deeply delicious.Amazing complexity and skill preparing. * Miang Som (10/10): Spicy and delicious, with a wonderful punch from the fish sauce. * Kanom Krok (10/10): Creamy, coconut heaven. Extremely fresh tasting. My partners favorite dish which is saying something because he does not normally like scallops. * Massaman Gae (10/10): Tender, savory, and extremely delicious. This place is obviously great. Great in a widely-known way. Like everyone knows it's great, what even is the point of writing a review? Well, I guess the point is this: It's great, but is it "$500 for a meal" great? Is ANYTHING $500 for a meal great? I argue the answer is no, but that's just me. Unless you're entertaining clients on an expense account, I dunno man. I walked away from this meal feeling like I'd been taken on a ride. Yes, of course; a CULINARY ride, but a financial one as well. Fixed menu, I get it. And maybe my expectations were off: The last few times I've finely-dined in PDX I walked away with a $200-$300 bill and while that's a splash-out, it's not a mortgage payment, you know? Anyway, I guess the times they have a-changed. Dinner for two shouldn't cost the same as a mortgage payment, it just shouldn't. Yes, it's an experience. But the experience just wasn't memorable enough to justify the cost. It's been a few months now and as I write this, I do remember specifically enjoying one particular amuse bouche. And that's it. Yes, everything else was superb. But only one small thing was MEMORABLY superb -- but even that wasn't enough for me to remember WHAT IT WAS. But I do remember the price tag: $500pp for a grand total of $1K. So I guess I'll just let this review stand for itself: Everyone's got different price points, and I guess I found my ceiling at Langbaan. I don't necessarily know that I'd even take clients here, should I be presented with the opportunity: Yes, the food is superb, the dining experience is next-level, but if I'm showing people "my city", I don't know that Industrial NW is where I want to take them, and I don't know that Langbaan is "it". I'd rather take them to Han Oak. I mean if I had to pick between Holdfast and Langbaan, I'd still probably pick Langbaan for business entertaining (depending on the crowd), but for a personal meal with your loved one or ones? I dunno. I wish I could have that grand back to spend on my next 12 months of phone bills. And yes, I know: This is my fault. It's not Langbaan's fault. But so few people discuss the price point when discussing restaurant reviews, I just want other people to KNOW before they GO. Ya know? Forewarned is forearmed, so consider yourself warned. What a wonderful experience. The tasting menu was well thought out and balanced, full of creativity and flavors. My favorites were the main course: king salmon (gang prer), crawfish relish (taew goong), eggplant (yum makhua phao) with coconut rice (khao mhoa). Also the scallop with cream (kanom krok) and the squab with peaches and dill (lon pla rah nok pi-rab). There are many more ingredients and techniques that go into these dishes than are listed in the menu. Staff were friendly and attentive and then atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. We were excited to try Langbaan for my birthday and have to say it wasn't quite up to my expectation. I have been to quite a few Michelin restaurants and the service definitely did not meet the mark of these. I didn't really feel welcomed in and we were seated at the bar which is fine but the server was more focused on making drinks all night for everyone than serving us, so there was nothing special about that and it was quite disappointing. I watched the people next to us be offered complimentary sparkling wine and for some reason we weren't offered this as well which was a bit odd to me. The first few items were delicious- I was very impressed by the scallop dish and the tartare in particular. The rest of the dishes after the starters were not anything mind blowing as I had expected. The presentation was good but just didn't really do much for me. The desserts at the end and the passionfruit gummies were another highlight for me. The pastry chef is clearly amazing and made such unique treats with wonderful flavors. I also liked that they had cocktails in addition to the wine pairing. Overall, for how expensive this meal is I would have expected better service, seating, and overall experience. Fantastic food, attentive service and just an overall fun experience. Every dish of the tasting menu was absolutely delicious - our favorites were probably the duck curry and the first three bites at the beginning. The meal got progressively spicy to just the edge of my (low) tolerance level. Thankfully they offer shots of coconut cream on ice to those who need it. For drinks we opted for one wine pairing while the other got cocktails. The copacabana milk punch was fantastic and the perfect sweetness to stand up against the spicier entree course. The wines were all great as well, pairing well with each course. Next time I would want to sit at the kitchen counter or request to sit at a booth when I reserve as you are pretty close to other parties. The only drawback of the night was that they only have one bathroom, despite there being two more just down the shared hallway ( I guess St Honoree doesn't want to share even when they're closed). I'd want to come back to try Cafe Phuket which runs out of the same location, but is limited to the patio while Langbaan is running. Overall, a great experience for a special night out. read more

Delicious Thai tasting menu with a reasonable price in Portland. I was in Portland and saw Longbaan on several lists of restaurants to try. We happen to be looking at Resy and saw that there was a reservation that opened up for the weekend that I was going to be in town. I wanted to give Longbaan a shout out for accommodating us because we wanted to add an extra person (they seem to have reservations for groups of 2's for tables). There are 2 seatings and we got the reservation for the first seating on Friday night. The tasting menu changes. They give just the right portion of food. My favorite for the night was the flank steak jerky and scallops. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted delicious and flavorful. Next time, I am in Portland, I definitely want to come back here to see what new ideas they come up with on their tasting menu. read more

For Christmas my son gave me two dinners out with him. So thoughtful. The second was Lang Baan. This restaurant only serves what the restaurant calls their Tasting Menu. You may call it pix fixe menu. I love this concept because you can just relax and make no decisions. The January menu is from Yaowarat/Bangkok Chinatown. The only thing that I could have been served that I don't eat is octopus. Whew! No octopus on the menu this month. The wait staff is knowledgeable and each dish was thoroughly described as presented. There were 12 dishes, I thoroughly enjoyed each one - except the Nahm Prik, which seemed 'muddy' to me with no flavor rising to the top. We also had the wine pairing which was really nice. This is not your "It's Thursday night, what should we have for dinner?" kind of place. With the wine pairing, the ticket is over $200 each before tip. It was memorable and a lovely gift. read more

This James Beard Award-winning spot was called one of the best restaurants in America. And it is inspiring, practically excellent. Not sure it's the best restaurant in the country, but it's doing what it sets out to do - elevating Thai cuisine and merging it with Pacific Northwest ingredients - brilliantly. And then adding an A5 Wagyu supplement (a steal at $45) on the side. But what I'll remember most about the meal isn't necessarily the food itself. The dishes were all wonderful, but nothing really stood out; it was all buried in a high level of spice, some of it overpowering the sweetness of the ingredients underneath. This is such a special meal. The flavors were intense, deep, interesting, and balanced. The presentation of the dishes was whimsical. But what really made this experience unique and something I would definitely do again is the way the staff described each dish, and the truly authentic nature of the recipes and ingredients used. It wasn't about showy ingredients and experimental gastronomy, it was about bringing us into the Issan region and sharing traditional food, and the communal experience that goes along with a shared meal. read more

It was a bit disappointing that for the amount of money you pay, the space is really tight since it's shared with Phuket Cafe, so it's not exactly a place to have intimate conversations. Ambiance was great but there's just not much elbow room. As for the food, there were 12 dishes, starting with small bites first then growing larger towards the end. Everything was really good and well balanced; acidic, rich, tangy, sweet, savory and herbaceous. You can see the Thai flavors really come out. For the money, I was hoping they'd be more creative with techniques but flavors were the standouts. Service was really good, as expected with the amount you're paying. Delicious tasting menu! Probably the only tasting menu I've tried where I enjoyed mostly everything that was served. The tasting menu changes every month and this month was Bangkok Chinatown, so a lot of Chinese inspired dishes which is right up my alley! We had counter seating and was able to watch the chefs prepare on a charcoal grill which felt so authentic to me. Servers were so nice and gave me a very comfortable experience. Everything was so delicious. A great balance of all flavors: sweet, spicy, and salty. Some dishes were a tad bit saltier than I would like but I still enjoyed the flavor profile. The course starts off with some finger foods then what seemed like appetizer dishes served family style. To be honest, the portion of these appetizer dishes were small and felt awkward to do family style. I felt like the portion is what a regular portion is for one person at other tasting menus. But the entree course makes up for it! Also family style but a ton of food! We were stuffed by the end. Lastly we ended with two desserts. One was a tofu coconut dessert which was so refreshing and the other was almost like a pineapple upside down cake which wasn't bad but didn't feel very Thai to me. I am not exaggerating when I say that Langbaan has been one of the best meals my fiancé and I have ever had. We chose to celebrate Valentine's Day early (our usual to beat the crowd) and we left so happy. The food, the service, the ambiance -- it was all great! We've tried Phuket cafe previously, so we were super curious on how the two menus would compare. I grew up eating Thai food and the way the menu was created, left me reminiscing but in a more luxury manner. There was nothing that clashed. Our favorites had to be the appetizers. We still can't stop thinking about them! The one thing that surprised me was that the spice level gradually went higher as we were provided each course. I have a high spice tolerance so I enjoyed this but I'm curious how it is with those who have a very low tolerance because my fiancé was struggling just a little bit, haha. I believe the menu also changes every month, but they may keep a couple items? Either way, we're very excited to see what they create next. The menu isn't on the affordable side -- much more of special occasion or once in a while thing in my opinion. This was a special occasion dinner for us, and for me in particular I am new to tasting menus. Langbaan changes its menu and region of Thailand multiple times a year, totaling at 6 different menus in a year. The atmosphere is intimate, quiet, and beautifully designed. I particularly liked the green lighting for the bar. The staff at Langbaan are incredibly attentive, and knowledgeable about their rotating menus. If they can't answer your question, they will find who in their restaurant can. On this menu, my favorite bites were the scallops in rice cups and the Thai tea dessert. The flavors were bold, and pushed me out of my comfort zone at times which I appreciated. While not every bite was a hit for the table, the overall experience was well-thought out. The attention to detail with the plating and combination of flavors was carefully planned out. They will also accommodate dietary needs here. Dined here on a recent trip to Portland. I was particularly interested in it given its 2024 James Beard award for outstanding restaurant. I have to say, it was good - but not outstanding. Sat at the bar on a Saturday night with my wife and the bartenders were our servers. Despite their juggling acts - they were very attentive and friendly. The vibe here is good - it's a relatively small place with an open-kitchen concept. It was nearing 100 degrees outside and we dressed in short sleeves and shorts and felt comfortable. The good of the place besides the service and the vibe was hands-down the flavors. A few of the dishes were punch-in-the-face flavorful! My top pick was the Tom Soap Pub (Dungeness crab) and the Kanom Krok (scallop with coconut cream). I was wary about the Tub On Jim Jaew, having never tried sweetbreads before but honestly, I never would have known I was eating an offal. I don't rate this an outstanding place for three reasons in particular. One, a few of the dishes were way too salty. I'm guessing it was due to fish sauce but for someone like me who is happy to lick a salt block - I thought it was way overdone. Two, many of the courses were served "family style" but friends, when you are paying $135 each, I expect a shared dish to be more than three tiny pieces of squab. If I were a solo diner, would they have only served me 1 1/5 tiny pieces? I don't know how the server kept a straight face and said "family style" with such a chintzy plate. Lastly, the bathroom situation...it's out the door near the kitchen and you walk into a long hallway with no bathroom for the restaurant clearly marked. There are two bathrooms that apparently belong to some other business but not accessible to the restaurant patrons. I had to go back inside and ask and was escorted to an unmarked door that required a code. Inside - dark, bare bones, and nothing that suggested "outstanding." I've seen better bathrooms at 7-11. All in all, I was glad to try Langbaan but it is not on my list of places that I'd make a point to go back to. read more

It's no wonder they just got a James Beard nomination. The space, service, and food were top notch! From the first course to the last, every bite was a party in your mouth. If I had to choose a favorite it would, without question, be the lamb belly curry! O. M. G. Melt in your mouth. They also run two restaurants out of the same space on weekends and they were so on top of everything, you would never know. Cannot wait to visit their sister restaurant Phuket Kitchen. read more

I was at Langbaan on Sunday 12/29/2024 to close out 2024 which was one of those years that I will never forget. I was torn between celebrating my triumphs or should I continue to dwell on my defeats of the year. That was my headspace when I came in. I was very excited to try their menu. The standout dishes were: 1) Miang Som - shrimp, Valencia orange, peanut, coconut, betel leaf 2) Kanom Krok - Hokkaido scallop, coconut cream, lemongrass, lime leaf, crispy rice cup. - the couple sitting next to me are foodies and come every quarter for the new menu. They indicated that during Covid, the restaurant kept themselves afloat selling this one item! 3) Gang Care - Cuttlefish Northern Thai soup, chanterelles, green bean, betel leaf 4) Muek Nam Dum - Geoduck, kabocha squash, squid ink, Fresno chili, cranberry, pepitas 5) Panang Wua - Beef brisket, asian pear, lime leaf, coconut, sunchoke - best panang curry I've ever eaten! 6) A5 Wagyu Ribeye - I asked for it well done and it was delicious! 7) Mouse Kati (dessert) - lime leaf cream, lychee, water chestnut, pomegranate, rose and quince 8) Mor Gang (dessert) - coconut custard, five spice and mekhong apple, date and fried shallots. The restaurant won a James Beard in 2024 and overall I had an amazing experience. The service was amazing. The waiter brought me a coconut cream drink because I cannot handle my spice very well. The restaurant is cozy and quant. Open kitchen concept so you can see all that is going on around you. I had a great conversation with the folks next to me who gave me so many food and adventure ideas than I cannot possibly fit them all into 2025, but I will try. I left there feeling that I was really there to celebrate 2024 because there is just so much more to come in 2025 and my defeats can be left in the past. Good service, nice atmosphere, nice food presentation, but overpriced for mediocre food. They should have at least throw in the lobster instead of charging an additional $45. Congee is a no no for luxury food restaurant, imo. And it didn't go well with xo sauce, like cat don't go with cheese. As someone who have tried many Asian food, it tastes like 5/10 to me. read more

4.50 stars. It's hard to accurately describe tasting menus especially given how much change one will see from month to month. What continues to set apart Langbaan from other entrants in this high end market is the focus on detail, novel flavor combinations, and at overall incredible atmosphere. As others have mentioned, you enter Langbaan by going into another restaurant, finding the door to Langbaan, and entering. You are going to be served a multi-coursed meal with an opportunity for some additions (yes, you will want to add these courses... you have already spent a good amount on your food so go ahead and finish the job). What were some standouts? On my visit, I really enjoyed a chicken salad paired with lovely pomelo and daikon radish, the A5 wagyu addition, a fermented catfish curry, an eel curry, and Langbaan's signature hokkaido scallop. This was one of my last meals in Oregon and I'm very thankful that I managed to score a seat before leaving. If you visit Portland, along with Le Pigeon, this should be at the top of your list for high end dining. read more

This place was worth every penny. We went all out, added both add one (pair of oysters and a wagyu steak entree) as well as the wine pairing. The first two starters were incredible - they had all of my favorite Thai flavors captured in a single bite. There was also a course with geoduck, which was surprisingly delicious. This was my second time having geoduck and my first time actually enjoying it. OMG and the flavor of the braised brisket curry in the main course was so damn good. I scraped that bowl clean. The wagyu beef was worth adding. It's so hard to pick a favorite item because everything was packed full of flavor and texture. I didn't super love all of the wines, but they paired really well with each course. And it was really nice to not have to think about it and just be served - so I'd say it was worth it. So good. Top 5 in Portland for sure, and that's hard to do in this city. The food was so flavorful and creative. The wine pairing was really nice. The service was super attentive and helpful. The inside was beautiful, the colors of the interior gave a good ambience. Would love to try their different seasonal menus. read more

I wish I was rich and could eat here every day. Seriously I love Thai food but fancy Thai food is even better. It was a full dining experience and I commend our waitress for being informative and helpful without being overbearing and over-talky. The restaurant has a great vibe and we were very lucky to have gotten seats through the reservation. I don't really have much to say other than you should absolutely eat here if it's within your means, the food was fantastic and you didn't even walk away wanting more (aka going to mcdonalds to get stuffed after tiny courses at a fancy place) it was actually more than enough food.
