Gado Gado is an absolute must-try! This Indonesian-focused restaurant delivers bold, layered flavors in every dish. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, warmly encouraged questions, and impressive bonus, she was being trained that evening as a new hire, yet handled everything with confidence. The restaurant itself is inviting, with vibrant, beautiful colors inside and both indoor and outdoor seating to choose from. But the real star is the food. From the Bakwan Sayur to the Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu-Mai to the Sumatran Style Beef Rendang, every dish we ordered left us more impressed than the last. My instinct is to say bring a big group and order everything on the menu, but honestly, the better move is to just keep coming back. It's that good.

Held high expectations after hearing great things but honestly really fell short of expectations. They emphasized how the place was family style so we were like okay, the prices make a bit more sense. Well the $32 beef was small and probably barely enough for one person without rice (which is $6). I understand food that's worth sharing for the taste but family style usually implies larger portions for sharing. Service was nice, friendly, but nothing particularly special. Jell-o shot - this was not really a shot, almost feel like it's embarrassing to say jell-o shot because it was just eating jello with a spoon. We typically get drinkable jell-o shots that go down smoothly and are delicious. These were mild alongside just not being a drinkable item. Krupuk - shrimp chips with a peanut sauce. Sounds simple enough. Those chips came in handy for the other saucy items, a fair alternative to rice. Roti Canai - a very traditional Malaysian bread. Soft and fluffy and paired with a flavorful tomato curry. The tiny bit of roti is barely sufficient for the curry. Definitely paying more for the curry but both are small (realistically shared between 3-4 people). Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai - this was our favorite item. We all love dim sum so obvious bias, but this was the most flavorful. Hints of Chinese sausage flavor were present, but the strongest flavor came from the aioli on top of the smoked roe. It even had a "soupy" effect after biting similar to a soup dumpling. Comes with 5 pieces so roughly $4 each. Sumatran Style Beef Rendang - we were told this was a chef's special and it was definitely delicious. Paired with rice, roti, or shrimp chips, this item is definitely a hit. On the downside, it's $40 or more for the beef with a carb on the side to absorb the flavors. Then the portion size is realistically for one to one and a half persons. Little spicy on the side but the beef was salty, tender, and flavorful.

For parties over a certain amount they require you to have a prix fixe menu. There are alternatives for those with dietary restrictions. But I would like to try and order from menu next time I am there. The food as really good and they were very packed on a Tuesday evening. That said a lot to me. The dessert was so delicious. It's fried banana or plantain with cheese and coconut. Whole this may sound an odd combination, it is delicious!

I want to say that my opinion is biased since I grew up in South East Asia, but I want to start by saying that the food is actually good. The staff are really friendly and as someone of SEA-decent, I'm really happy with how they represented it. Starting off with the good. The food is good, my wife and I had the Chicken Tawar, Beef Rendang, and the Satay. Firstly, the chicken satay, I've never been a fan of peanut sauce, but theirs was amazing. I'm not sure if it's the saltiness of the shrimp, but it comes off much more balanced than other peanut sauces. Chicken tawar is not a dish I'm familiar with but again it tasted good and found a really good balance between rich and acidic. Beef rendang, is one of my favorite dishes of all time, so I had incredibly high expectations. Although I would say it is not completely traditional, it was still great. I loved the pairing of a mango salad to break up the heaviness. Even the sweetened ikan bilis is a good touch to add texture and flavor. My ONLY struggle is the pricing. Perhaps this is where my bias is reflected the most. In my head it is almost unfathomable that Sambal, which is a condiment, is 6$. Or how a single Roti Canai with curry is 16$. Even the satay, which I think is great, is 16$ for 3 satay.

We got back pretty late from our hike and didn't have many dining options open at that hour. Since Gado Gado stays open until 9 pm, we decided to give it a try. The place has a cool, hipster vibe. We didn't have reservations, but were able to grab seats at the bar. We ordered the English pea and asparagus green curry, Sumatran-style beef rendang, roti canai, bakwan sayur, and scented rice. It was more than enough food for the three of us. You can really taste the quality in each dish, and the flavors were both unique and delicious. The only downside was the price, which felt quite high for the portion sizes. Overall, it was a great experience, but more of a once-in-a-while kind of spot for me.

This place is going on my favorite's list! I loved everything we ordered but I liked the smoked chicken lawar the best. It reminded me of one of my favorite tea leaf salads except it has curry leaves and shrimp paste instead of tea leaves and fish sauce. It was fresh and aromatic and I would go back any day just for this salad. We also had the green cabbage and papaya bakwan sayur which came out in little itty bitty fried strips which were a little awkward to eat but the chutneys are what made the dish so good. The mint chutney was especially good. The green curry was also tasty but heavy on the coconut milk. We ordered a side of the clove scented rice to pair it with. Of course we had some roti and we all loved the blistered tomato curry that it came with so much that we ordered a second one. The decor was kitschy but fun. The staff were helpful and accommodating. Also, four of the five dishes we ordered were vegan, so if you're vegan this might be a nice place to go treat yourself.

I will be dreaming about this place. Bay scallop crudo was chef's kiss. Roti, absolute perfection. All the other dishes were so good, we were absolutely blown away. Staff were friendly and nice. We will definitely always recommend this restaurant if anyone asks for Portland recommendations!

Gado Gado is a must visit in Portland. We got the set menu for a party of 3, and that is my only regret, not because it isn't a good idea, but because there were a few things I wouldn't have otherwise ordered, and a few things I would have ordered that weren't on the regular set menu, such as the scallop crudo with a sauce that had pandan in it that I really wanted to try. It might have come with the pescatarian set menu though. Regardless, most of the set menu was highly enjoyed, such as the siu mai, roti, rice, chicken satay, and papaya salad. The omelette was only ok, the beef randan a bit to dry, and the donuts were also a little dry. Other than that, it was a great overall experience getting the "rice table." On a last note, the sambal and house assorted pickles were great and service kept that refilled. Ambiance was super cool, little unique items strewn about, and the plates weee cool (but some actually just from the store anthropology) still loved it though.

We had an amazing dinner at Gado Gado last night. We've never had Indonesian food before so our servers were super helpful in helping us choose some dishes and explaining the best way to eat them to fully experience the flavor. The food itself is incredible. We ended up getting an extra Roti Cannai (flatbread) because it was so good. We hope to come back to do the set menu for another special date night. Update to this review: I ended up going into labor not 12 hours after our meal here, so if you're pregnant and looking to get the ball rolling, Gado Gados food might have just done the trick!!! Can't wait to come back with little baby

Amazing food and wonderful service! It almost felt like a piece of Bali in Portland! The spices were extremely flavorful and everything was good as expected. I do wish the menu was more extensive though!

Every dish we ordered was really good. It was one of those meals where everything just hit. You could tell right away that a lot of care went into the food. The flavors were well balanced and everything tasted fresh and satisfying. The skewers were a standout for me. They were extremely tender and juicy and cooked perfectly. The meat was soft, flavorful, and not dry at all. You could really taste how well they were grilled. My favorite part of the meal was the roti. It was so soft and fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of crunch on the outside. Warm and fresh and honestly hard to stop eating. It went perfectly with every dish and I would come back just for that. What I loved most was how consistent everything was. There was not a single dish that felt disappointing. Everything tasted thoughtfully made and well executed. Overall it was a great meal and a place I would absolutely come back to. Highly recommend, especially for the skewers and the roti.

Overall my food was great. The flavors were there, the spices were there and they had great customer service. However, once I came back to my hotel and heated up my to go food/ leftover I did see a hair that wasn't mine in my Roti. A hair that wasn't mine. The food was great but that did deter me from returning. Making sure everyone in the kitchen's hair is tied up or anyone wrapping up your Togo food should be important. I wanted to give this place 5 stars so bad but now that I can't eat the remainder of my roti I paid for because of a piece of hair it's frustrating. But the food is great. The service is good, but I would pack my own food to go.

The fried rice's flavor was pretty muted..I prefer a little saltiness in my fried rice and it honestly had barely any salt? It tasted like plain rice with a little soy sauce and maybe oil flavor? Just not very aromantic in general.. I disliked the Mandarin Crispy Chicken the most as I had an issue with the breading. It was very thick and each bite felt more breading than chicken..The flavor of the sauce was good but with how thick the breading was, the inside of the chicken had no flavor at all once I bit in.. The service was good and the staff was attentive during our visit. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Hand-Ripped Youpoo Noodle: The absolute star of the meal. The wide, hand-ripped noodles had the perfect chewy texture you look for. They were tossed in a deeply savory, slightly spicy chili oil sauce and topped with a generous amount of perfectly seasoned minced beef and fresh bok choy. It was incredibly satisfying and a must-order. Popcorn Chicken: This was a bit of a letdown. While it looked golden brown and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, it was not special at all and lacked any unique flavor or punch compared to the other dishes. Spicy Chili Oil Wontons: These were packed with flavor! The wonton wrappers were delicate, and the filling was juicy. They were swimming in a robust, aromatic chili oil that had a nice kick and a touch of vinegar sharpness. Why 4 stars instead of 5? While the noodles and wontons were excellent and the service was good, the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant was completely empty when we went, but it was super cold inside because the window was wide open. Between the chilly draft and the fairly generic popcorn chicken, it misses out on a full 5 stars.
