Despite having to eat outside in the rain because their restaurant was under renovation, and having to deal with the homelessness in Portland our food was amazing. Negatives: -restaurant was under renovation so we had to eat outside. There was a patio covering for the outdoor dining. However, that did not prevent the homelessness from coming up to the patio, opening the door and asking us for money. We were visiting from LA though, so it's wasn't that awful. Khao Moo Dang is one of those spots that I think is worth trying, even if it didn't completely win me over on my first visit. I ordered the original Khao Moo Dang rice dish, and while it was good, it didn't quite stand out as anything memorable to me. The Thai ice tea though was very tasty. The portion size is no joke, very generous to the point where I left extremely full (almost a little too full). If you're hungry, this place will definitely deliver. I do think I might have enjoyed it more if I had gone with a noodle dish, so I'd be interested in coming back and trying something different. The service was fast and efficient, and the food came out quickly. Parking was also pretty reasonable on a weekday, and there was no wait when I went. One thing to note is that the restaurant itself is quite small. I can easily see how the hype could make it feel crowded on weekends, so going during the week is probably your best bet. My only complaint is that they need a bigger location to accommodate for their popularity, as it can get pretty crammed with people. They have a moderately sized menu with pretty reasonable prices. The food comes out fast and they have condiments you can add to any dish to elevate the spice level. My favorite is the tofu curry noodle. A side note: The seating is assigned after you have placed your order at the counter. After browsing through its overhead menu, we ordered the following dishes: Dumpling Soup Noodle with House Bone Broth (with Egg, Sweet Sausage, and Pork Belly Add-Ons): The lightly fatty broth was pleasantly flavorful. On a cold, rainy Portland day, a hot bowl of soup is much needed! My friends and I came for a late lunch on Saturday and luckily there were tables available. We ordered at the counter and sat down. The food came within 10 minutes. I got the ba-mhee with soup and my friends got the tom yum. The broth for both were so flavorful! I added some chili oil from the condiments on the table. Be warned, add a little to start because it can get spicy. Pork was tender, wontons were stuffed, and surprisingly the crispy pork stayed crispy even after soaking in the broth. It's not a typical Thai spot since they don't serve dishes like Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice, etc. Street parking only in the neighborhood. The spice level is probably not adjustable since nobody asked when we ordered. #8 was loaded with toppings, and the broth was rich and hearty, almost like Japanese ramen. Perfect for fall weather. The only thing that didn't impress me were the noodles. They tasted exactly like the Chinese dry egg noodles I buy at Asian markets. Nothing wrong with them, but I expected something different. Everything about the bowl felt new and exciting to me until I tasted the noodles, the same noodles I used to live on as a broke student. It was a bit of a letdown, as the noodles didn't quite fit in with the rest of the bowl. But that's just me. We also tried the Thai tea and lime tea. Ok this has been in my list forever. It came highly recommended by several trusted friends. And it did not disappoint! I got #2.1 (Khao Haang). The Chinese sausage is ultimately why I chose this dish, but I stayed for the crispy pork belly, the pork broth, and the garlic rice. I could drink a whole pot of that pork broth.. I would've liked for my egg to be a little more soft-boiled and for the pork loin to be a little fatties, but that's just a personal preference. The food here is always excellent. There is never a time where I've come to KMD and left unsatisfied. There was a time where I went three times in one week! The service is always welcoming. They will always show you where the water station is and point to other tables if the inside tables are taken. Fantastic food, efficient counter service, and a good vibe. KMD is on the small side, and the line to the counter does weave though the middle of restaurant and tables, but it's totally worth a little bit of a hectic dining area, because the food is awesome. Nice outside enclosed dining area that is both heated and cooled, so that's my preference, since they are basically always very busy. Totally recommend, everything in the menu is good. read more

only downside of this spot is street parking :( everything else is pretty straightforward! when you come in, you order with the cashier, take a number, and find a spot to sit while you wait for your food to come. after youre done eating, they ask that you bring your own dishes to the designated area. the space is a bit smaller but its cozy! theres indoor & covered outdoor seats with heaters to keep you warm on a cold day! ordered the ba-mhee pi-set - 9.5/10 there were small pieces of egg shells house curry noodle: 10/10 the price to portion ratio is solid and the noodle to topping ratio is perfect! theres plenty of toppings, enough to eat with every bite of noodles! condiments were available to elevate the flavor of your dish as you wish, but the flavors of the dishes i tried were so flavorful i didnt find the need to add anything extra! read more
