Saturday
Kristen L.

We arrived late afternoon on a Saturday and they were out of pho. Originally, I was disappointed, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. Instead, I got the wonton soup, and it was delicious. I'm normally not too big of a fan of wontons, but these ones were more pork forward (rather than shrimp), which I liked. We'll definitely order this again! The other soup was good, but the thick noodles were more mushy. Next time if the pho is available we'd get that instead.

Tried Annam VL for their Wednesday specials and really enjoyed it overall. Food: Bo Kho (4.5/5): Excellent beef stew. The broth was rich, thick, and deeply flavorful, with a nice balance of savory and sweet. The meat was very tender and soaked up the flavor perfectly. It's hearty and satisfying, especially on a cool day. Tofu Bánh Mì (3/5): Pretty standard. The bread was fresh and crusty, but the filling was light and could use a bit more flavor or sauce. Service: Quick and polite. Everything came out warm and fresh. Ambiance: Simple and casual spot, good for a quick meal or takeout. It can get busy during lunch hours, but the turnover is fast. Parking: Street parking only, but usually not hard to find a space nearby. Overall, a solid midweek stop with great Bo Kho and friendly service. I'll definitely come back to try more of their menu.

Yummm! I got the signature Annam pho. The garlic beef was so tender, the wide noodles perfectly cooked, and the broth was super fragrant. The service is fast here and they have a rotating menu so it's easy to make a selection. It'll be my go to spot if I want pho in the future.

I originally came for pho, but unfortunately they weren't serving it Wednesdays! I ordered the miến gà from the server's recommendation which are glass noodles in chicken broth with tender chicken & garlic shallots. I was seated quickly, and the service was fast. There's also plenty of seating available.

With just a few tables in an unassuming store on Belmont, Annam VL is not to be overlooked! Sister restaurants with Ha VL, Annam offers rotating soups daily - all homemade! They do sell out frequently on the weekends, so make sure to go early! Along with a variety of soups, they also have plenty of appetizers to choose from - banh mi, spring rolls, rice dumplings. Everything tastes fresh and comforting. The soups were full of flavor and depth - lots of spices and herbs! Loved all the different textures. Service was also very friendly and the owner came around and asked each table how everything was. You can tell great care was put into each dish. Truly a wonderful experience, and they are a place that's the top of my list every time I'm craving soup!

I've been here twice now and am a huge fan of their pho options on Saturday. The broth is unique and very beefy. Prices are reasonable and service is fast. Be sure to check their website for daily menu options since they have a rotating menu daily.

Attentive service! Limited rotating menu and hours! Super small space. I appreciate the rotating menu but it wasn't enough for me to crave and praise about it since there are many other options for Vietnamese cuisine in the area. It's a bit tricky to get in and out of this place from Powell so use caution.

I've been here several times for day service (rotating soups), which are delicious, but this review is for their night service, Annam By Night. Annam By Night is a limited run of evening dining, with a menu inspired by Vietnamese drinking culture. Think shared plates, grilled meats, wraps and rolls, appetizers, all shared over glasses of beer! They have fun cocktails and mocktails as well. Annam By Night is seasonal, so you'll have to check out their instagram to see if they're serving this menu for the season. The menu also changes often. Review for Annam By Night menu as of 6/14/2025 Bun cha bites (pork patties/meatballs and DIY wraps) (5/5) - bun cha is currently my favorite Vietnamese dish, and this did not disappoint! The meatballs were seasoned perfectly and not too dry or crumbly. I asked for birds eye chilis on the side for some extra spice. My only complaint is there's no slices of pork belly under the meatballs like most places that serve bun cha. But this was plenty of food to share! I talked to the chef, who said the nuoc mam is supposed to be lemongrass infused for his dish but they had run out by the time I ordered so they served it with regular nuoc mam. Still delicious! Bo nuong vi (make your own spring rolls with lemongrass beef) (5/5) - lemongrass beef comes out on a sizzling plate and this comes served with a giant plate of veggies and some rice paper. Hau nuong (grilled oysters) (4/5) - I'm not sure why I always ordered grilled oysters everywhere I go despite not particularly enjoying grilled oysters (it's a texture thing for me sorry!!) that being said, this had a great flavor from the green onions. Goi sua (jellyfish salad) (794617562/5) - I've never met a jellyfish salad I didn't love. This one tasted like Vietnamese slaw!! And I'm obsessed with the shrimp crackers that's served with this. The crackers had a zesty shrimp and lime seasoning that really reminded me of tom yum snacks, however, Chef An confirmed that tom yum and this flavor are indeed significantly different.

Went in for the pop up - Annam by night. Wasn't too busy at opening but got busy around 7:30! Had a baby and toddler - not a lot of room for a big stroller but we made it work! Loud hip hop vibe - so not good if your kids don't like loud music. Food was more of a "nhậu" vibe which is drinking and snacking on small plates and having a good time. Our group had a good time so annam by night was a success for us!

Bun Bo Hue

I've been looking forward to the VL restaurants for a while after hearing about the limited small-batch noodle soups freshly made each day. After looking at the menus of all 3 restaurants, I decided to visit Annam VL to try the Bun Bo Hue. Coming from the Bay Area, I grew up eating Bun Bo Hue, so I had my hopes up for how Annam VL would compare. The Bun Bo Hue here was decent. I could taste the flavors coming from the simmer beef bones; however, I found the broth to be a bit light on flavor compared to back home. Perhaps if the broth were reduced more, it would have been perfect. I was also hoping to find more toppings for bun bo hue such as the pork blood cubes and the pork knuckles. The banana blossom was a nice addition that added more texture to the soup. Pros: Fast, friendly service. Cons: Bun Bo Hue could do more toppings, such as pork blood and pork knuckles, maybe as a possible add-on.

Just as good as their sister restaurant, consistent clean broth, fresh ingredients, kind service. A bit tight for seating and waiting area for a table to open up. So if you go in a cold day try to go in-between peak rush hours.

Food is amazing and authentic. Family business and tastes like home cooking. I could eat here everyday.

My partner found out about this place while he was searching for some good places to eat. We all were getting fatigued from the bountiful options of Thai and American comfort and wanted some Vietnamese food to soothe the soul. We came across Annam VL as our last food stop before heading home to the Bay. As soon as we stepped in, we were greeted and immediately escorted to a table. I was surprised that the menu only had 3 options on a Sunday! Contrary to how Vietnamese restaurants like to capitalize on having bountiful options ranging from noodle soup to rice dishes to bread, it was definitely an interesting take to see a restaurant limit their selection of entrees per day! I went for the banh canh while my partner and besties went for bun bo hue. I could definitely see the spice and flavor differences from the Bay Area to Portland. The food wasn't bad, but it also didn't wow me like back home. I liked the decor of how the carrots were cut and the addition of chayote for that Vietnamese homemade soup feel. I wished the noodles were a bit more bouncier or gave off more chew as opposed to what I received that day. Nonetheless, it was a nice meal, accompanied by great customer service. The server came back several times to check in on us and it was nice to see him chatting with other regulars.

The meat on the luc lac has a nice char on it and a sauce that is almost sweet. Service is quick and the vibe inside is very trendy with colorful decor and lights. Great for a night out. There were dragon on walls, umbrellas in the ceiling, a huge full service bar. Our dishes came out within few minutes. We got the chicken skewers, chicken pho, chicken luc lac and steak rolls. We liked the small plate dishes, but the entree ones were disappointing. The chickens were chunky and dry, bland flavor. As much as we loved the vibe of the place, we didn't enjoy the food as much. The staff members were very joyful and friendly. They were explaining the process to every guest and keeping everyone informed on waiting time. During dining, they were also available to help.

My friend got the noodles with crispy chicken and mushrooms, and those were phenomenal. The Vietnamese platter would honestly make a perfect date-night meal. This has great variety and fun to share. The fries and wings were flavorful appetizers and a great way to start the meal. Service was great overall, but a bit hands-off after the food was served. I don't remember anyone checking back in on us. Nothing was wrong with the food, but it would've been nice to have that quick follow-up. Would definitely come back, especially to check out their brunch next time.

Downtown Portland's hidden gem for authentic Vietnamese!…read more I was walking around downtown Portland and stumbled upon Cuốn Vietnamese Street Food, and honestly, it was the best meal of my week . If you are looking for fresh, flavorful, and satisfying comfort food, do not walk--run to this spot. To get the full experience, we ordered a variety, and every single item was a hit. We started with the Beef Pho, and the broth was the absolute star. It was rich, aromatic, and deeply savory, clearly simmered for hours. It was the perfect dish on a sunny Portland day. We also grabbed a Chicken Banh Mi. The bread had that perfect crispy crust with a soft, airy crumb, and the chicken was grilled to perfection with fresh veggies and herbs. Of course, we had to wash it all down with a creamy, sweet Thai Tea--it was delicious and the perfect end to the meal. Beyond the food, the vibe is great. It's a super clean, casual spot with big windows letting in lots of natural light. It's set up for quick counter service, which makes it perfect for a fast lunch downtown, but the staff is so friendly and welcoming that you feel right at home. It's a family-run business, and you can taste the passion in the food. Highlights: · The Pho Broth: Seriously some of the best in the city. · The Banh Mi: Fresh bread, great fillings. · The Service: Fast, efficient, and incredibly kind. Pro Tip: Don't forget to grab your own utensils and sauces (the chili crisp is a must for the pho), and help yourself to the free self-serve hot tea. It's the little touches like that which make this place a winner. I am already planning my next trip back to try the Crispy Pork Belly. Highly recommend

Positives: fresh, well made, very flavorful proteins. Cons:…read morePrice I tried Cuon for the first time and enjoyed it. I went for a Vermicelli bowl where you get to pick 2 proteins. I selected Pork Belly (their specialty) and lemongrass chicken. The bowl itself is standard Vietnamese fare, nothing special, creative or exciting in that sense. That said, the ingredients tasted fresh and the proteins were very well seasoned and cooked. The pork belly skin had an awesome crunch and you can clearly taste the lemongrass in the chicken. The included spring roll had nice crunch but little flavor. Unfortunately, outside of Pho, Banh Mi and Noodle Bowls, there's sadly not much else to the menu. No Vietnamese salads, stir frys, etc. Either way, what they do make, they seem to make quite well. So, on to my main issue ie, that for a place thats only open for lunch, the prices are a bit too high. I noted about $16 for a Banh Mi sandwich, no sides. Pho was around $20 and my noodle bowl was about $20 as well. Weirdly, its about the same prices as eating lunch back home in Miami, a FAR more expensive city in general. In fact, I've often had more exciting Vietnamese in Manhattan for lower prices. So while its easy to recommend Cuon on quality, its not a top recommendation for lunch value in the PDX which is why Im docking 1 star.
