Been looking for a place with a good shampoo bar and I've gotta say, I'm a big fan! It's suds well and smells great! Haven't had any issues and I no longer desire shampoo in any plastic container! I had come to the store last week, where the owners mother was tending the store and heard that they may not renew thier lease during the summer this year. I've been around Pasadena for years, and hearing a staple like them may not be here anymore certainly makes me sad. I remember doing a soap workshop and making my own soap there, I hope there are plans to do so in the future. Regardless, I plan to keep purchasing her bars when she decides to go online, or if she considers vending at farmers markers (like South Pasadena's Farmers Market). I've had the pleasure of meeting them both and they both are extremely kind and helpful. You can tell from the soaps the passion of their handmade goods and the push to reduce plastic waste. That's awesome!! I feel more and more stores will continue to follow suit, though soap kitchen had been doing it before it was cool! I can't believe I always drove by this place and never noticed it before! Love that the soap here is made in house. When I was getting into soap making (I forfeited that hobby soon into it because of the steep learning curve) I was using yelp to find local soap places where they made the soap in house. There aren't that many places that do this apparently! Anyway I love the shop. I took my son here who has eczema and the mom of the store owner showed us some good Shea butter based soaps. I am not a bar soap person so I will leave those reviews to those that are. I am however a user of shower and skin products and I really like those I have bought from The Soap Kitchen. i have used the Shower Steamers. Both the Lavender for relaxing and Breathe for helping with, yes, breathing (maybe you have a head cold). to other items like Rose Hip Seed oil for your skin and So Fresh, So Clean which removes makeup and helps your skin feel great. Even the candles are nice. I highly recommend them. Give them a try. I'm sure you will like them. read more

For those of you who don't know, natural soap is my jam! (hint: gifts) My husband and I were walking through Old Town Pasadena and so happened to walk into The Soap Kitchen. My husband, who moaned and groaned as I dragged him inside, didn't know the power of a good soap. His Ivory using self was oblivious to all the gunk put in mass produced soaps and how your body may react to the ingredients. I, on the other hand, have to know this stuff because I have sensitive skin. Here's where I want you to pay close attention: when I use products with those ingredients, I have major dandruff/oily hair and acne. And how products like soy, parabens and sulfates take your hormones on a rollercoaster ride. Meanwhile, walked in and was in L.O.V.E.! TSK is a quaint little shop that houses soaps, oils, sponges, loofahs, and salts, all prepared by the owners on site! I was immediately intrigued with their olive oil soaps (they carry two kinds of soaps: Olive Oil based and Shea Butter based). I came across this tiny shop on a food walking tour of Pasadena. Food and soap? Well, I didn't question it! After all, this is one of the most unique shops in the downtown Old Pasadena corridor. Be sure to ask for their 'frequent buyer' card. If you buy gift baskets, you'll quickly fill it up and get a bonus bar of soap. Plus, with a Yelp check-in you'll get a free mini bar of soap. For those old-school LA folks, you may recognize the shop from Huell Howser''s 'California''s Gold.' They even have a bar in honor of him. I've been a customer for two years and highly recommend the products. The natural ingredients are kind to dry or problem skin. I've stopped using commercially manufactured soap and am proud to say that I no longer purchase soap in plastic containers. I first met the owners awhile back at the Grand Opening of the Huell Howser exhibit in Orange County. I have really sensitive skin and was assured that I would not get any allergic reactions since they use all-natural ingredients. I bought 3 bars including the California's Gold soap bar. I'm SO PLEASED with their soaps that I promised myself to visit their store the next time I visited Old Pasadena. So today is my day off and I decided to drive up to Pasadena from San Diego. I remembered to stop by their store and was greeted by their adorable (and very well-behaved) pooch Shea Butter. The owners - super nice people! The store itself also greets you with a blissful, refreshing scent with all those natural soaps on display. Don't come here in a rush if this is your first visit. After taking my sweet time smelling all the soaps, I bought 5 bars this time and was given a sample, plus I redeemed the Yelp offer for a free travel-sized bar. I generally like the soaps with lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint, though I also purchased the Kahlua Coffee Bar. I may get Black Gold next time. Stumbled upon this place while exploring old town. Cute handmade soap store. Natural ingredients only. Owner was helpful and friendly. It smells so good in here! You can see the kitchen where they make the soap. It is definitely pricey though, about $10 for a bar of soap. They have all kinds of gift box options where you can pick the soaps you want to include. I chose a gift box with two soaps and a loofah. All the soaps are on display so you can smell them. A very cute soap shop. The price was on the high side for handmade soap.One can usually find larger soap bars for less money at the farmers market. I purchased two small bars for a whopping $16. The soaps are nicely wrapped in paper but that does not allow the shopper to see the soap they are actually purchasing. The sample bar on the shelf was very nice but once I got home and unwrapped my soap, I saw that it was covered in orange spots. Through a Google search, I found out that orange spots on soap means it is going bad. I think I will stick to the farmers market for my soap purchases. read more

This little soap shop is a God send. I needed to find a beautiful birthday present for my best friend and have it shipped as soon as possible to her new home in North Carolina...and of course I wait until 2-days before her birthday to do so . I took a chance to see what I could find in this pretty, Ol' Town Pasadena store and was pleasantly surprised to learn that all of their soaps and bath products are made with natural ingredients right in the back of their store; their "kitchen." Everything smelled wonderful, but their Lavendar/relaxing scents are the best. I bought the midsized gift basket complete with 4 bars of soap (facial, body, and even shampoo), which included two bath powders, small sponge, mini-towel and lip balm. The shop itself is so inviting and the gratitude expressed from Dali and her mom are one of kind. I just discovered another fabulous product, the lavender milk bath salts. I love this shop!!!! One of the nicest owners and best products in a locally owned and operated shop in Old Town Pasadena. Located just south of Patagonia Pasadena on Fair Oaks and Union. Parking is best in the 90 min free lots which there are three of in Old Town: De Lacey Parking Facility 45 S. De Lacey Avenue (1/2 block south of Colorado and De Lacey) Marriott Parking Facility 171 N. Raymond Avenue (between Holly and Walnut) Schoolhouse Parking Facility 33 E. Green Street (corner of Green and Raymond) If you don't feel like venturing out to Pasadena they do online biz too. Dali is such a nice owner and she makes her soap fresh right on sight in the back KITCHEN. Using just natural essential oils, olive oil and lye to make the soap it is not the chemically fragrant junk in so many of the chain mall stores, this stuff is natural and just makes the best gifts for anyone who wants to stay clean and smell nice. The Soap Kitchen provides a quasi-romantic shopping experience: it's in Old Town Pasadena, it's a cozy little storefront, artisanal soaps are made on-site with all natural ingredients, and I can even imagine I have enough disposable income to sustain this kind of lifestyle! Fantasies aside, the Soap Kitchen is a quaint little boutique store, reminiscent of small tourist towns in the Northeast. They carry mostly soaps, scrubs, some shampoo bars, lip balm, and a few other bath goodies. Their claim: providing chemical-free alternatives to mass-produced, commercial soaps by handcrafting their soaps with all natural ingredients. The scents are fab but can be overwhelming for some (but of course, it's a soap store!). One drawback from this "welcome whiff" is that it's just a melange of fragrances that overpower your sense of smell right upon entry, then it's a bit hard to make out each of their individual soap varieties. Soaps are sold by weight, most at $1.75 an ounce. Shoppers pick their pre-cut/-packaged soap bars and they're weighed at checkout. A regular size bar (about 4 oz) comes to about $7 - $8. There are supposed to be some "man bars" with fragrances that are more appealing to men (or perhaps more odorously-suggestive of masculinity) but I didn't find a big selection in the store aside from shaving soap bars. There are also some specially-formulated facial bars. My experience at the shop was pleasant. I was left to roam and sniff around the different varieties, but I also didn't get offered any help either: no stories about Huell Hauser's visit-inspired California Gold soap, no recommendations, no "are you looking for anything in particular, maybe something to grow your hair back?" There's street parking nearby (although not in front of the store) and some of the public lots give the first 90 minutes free parking. PROS: + Local business, artisanal + Wide variety of all-natural soaps + Great fragrances, if you're into the lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, cinnamon, and other herbal scents CONS: - Costly - No specials or sale items to motivate purchases (but credit where it's due: there is a Yelp check-in special offer as of August 2011). VERDICT: = It's where the bourgeois and the aristocracy shop for aromatherapeutic soap. It's a nice little boutique shopping experience to indulge your sense of smell, and I want to say "Yay! I'm a fan", but the cost is a bit rich for my blood, so I have to politely nod, it's "A-OK." read more

The Soap Kitchen is so good...It's just plain silly!! If for no other reason, The Soap Kitchen deserves your visit because it's owner operated, and the owner is as sweet as the store is good. She is a hands on, hard working, innovative, natural, tasteful, genius, generous, and caring entrepreneur. Even if her product was "just ok", she deserves your business. But here's the thing...Her product is better than just "ok". The main product is, of course, soap. Handmade, fresh in every way...soap. But her style and personality comes through in her displays, arrangements, and supporting items. It's a dynamite place to buy gifts, and she'd never let you go home without samples for yourself (just don't be righteous about it! You might spoil her enthusiasm!! lol). The Soap Kitchen is clean, and everything is always neatly in it's place. This is a remarkable feat, as it's impossible to resist holding each new soap up to face so you can get a "whiff"' of another of her flavors. I could go on and on about this shop, and the owner. Why? Because I believe one should be given credit where credit is due. For so many reasons, credit is due here. So go on in and find a few reasons of your own to get excited about this place and be sure to take some soap home with you. Anything you do buy will be a credit to your own taste, and to your home as well. (Disclaimer...If you have something against the whole concept of being clean, you will not enjoy the experience. I'm a little biased because I bought someone a gift from here and they LOVED the gift, so of course, I'm going to rate this place five stars. The soaps have an olive oil base to it and is marketed as "all natural." The soap scents are amazing, but what is more amazing is their marketing abilities of preparing a variety of gift baskets for customers. I found the business after watching an episode of local public television KCET program California's Gold hosted by the now late Huell Howser. My personal skin type is naturally dry and heavy detergent commercial soaps irritate that condition. I am extremely happy with the products obtained from the Soap Kitchen. They are invigorating, effective and the natural products used in the making smell amazing, not the usual mass market artificial. Do note that everything in the store is hand made which is obvious when you unwrap the product. Rustic handcraft in appearance but like a high end spa product in effectiveness. Highly recommended is the shampoo bar: just three or four swipes on your wet scalp yield a rich lather that will remove any residue buildup you may have. Soap options include shea butter and different exfoliates make for interesting combinations. Here's a couple of tips to make your first visit easier: The store is small, about the size of a large walk-in closet. Visit their informative website and shop the product line and write down some notes. The store is easily accessed from the 210 Freeway and is located just north of Colorado. Parking can be tight in the area. If you don't want to pay for a flat rate lot, drive a couple of short blocks south where you'll see curbside meters ($1.25 per hour, quarters only) and take the easy stroll back to the store. Also, if you happen to catch the KCET repeat of the TV show, it is worth your time to see the owners' soap making process and the care that goes into it. Once you get familiar with the product line mail order service is nice. For the record, I am not the usual metro cosmetics type of guy. I work blue collar railroad, outside in all weather in a dusty grease and oil environment. . I am not the type of person that walks into Ulta, Sephora or the handbag department at Nordstrom. I have been really distressed by all of the articles I've read lately about the toxic, possibly cancer-causing chemicals that are in soaps, lotions, and other beauty products. For the last couple of months, Ive been buying more "natural" or "organic" soaps and shampoos from Whole Foods. So when I heard about this store that made all-natural soaps on the premises, I had to check it out. The smells were just heavenly when you walked through the door, and there were certainly no shortage of wonderful soaps to choose from. The following are just a few of the great offerings at this store. Mmm! Lavender Citrus Lemongrass Peppermint w/ Shea Butter Lemongrass White Cornmeal w/ Shea Butter Orange Clove & Cinnamon Spice Rosemary Lavender w/Shea Butter Just Lavender w/ Shea Butter Tea Tree Face Bar (acne) Tea Tree Peppermint Shampoo The staff was friendly and helpful, even suggesting a good soap for my son's acne. I was surprised to see that they offered shampoo soaps, bath salts, candles, and more. The soaps were, indeed, expensive, but what else can you expect when the products are made from only the best, natural materials to make safe and healthy products -- unlike most of the other products we find on our store shelves? My trips to the Soap Kitchen may not be too frequent, but I will definitely go back again. My good health and well being is certainly worth the added cost. I went away very happy with my purchases, and look forward to my next visit to stock up again on these wonderful soaps. read more

I love this place. The owner is so kind, she has so many options with fragrance (essential oils) or without. I bought her face soap and mini loofah and I'm obsessed. I've been using it for a week now and my face has never felt smoother or more hydrated. Most soap companies remove the moisturizing ingredients in order to sell you another product like lotion. We love the soap kitchen; my body has been washed with soap made by the family here for the last four years -- we buy bars by the basketful, and most of our friends are accustomed to gifts of soap. We even had the Soap Kitchen do wedding favors for us; each of the guests at our reception got a little box of soap, and word was that this proved far more popular than matchbooks or bells or any of the other traditonal doo-hickeys given away these days. Seriously, they do a lovely job here, and you can have loads of fun finding new soap "scents" to try. I highly recommend anything with peppermint in it. read more

I love the Soap Kitchen! They make the most moisturizing all natural handmade olive oil soap! I especially love the essential oils that are put into it making them smell so amazing! I am a recent breast cancer survivor and went trough chemo and radiation this past year. It caused my skin to be irritated and dry and I could not find a soap to be more moisturizing than these olive oil bars! I highly recommend them vs using your every day Dove bar which is drying! They are located in a cute shopping area and the store is so cute and smells so wonderful I could stay there all day and it would give me health benefits! :) Dali and her mom are also super nice, friendly, and so knowledgeable! read more

OMG! I love this place. I first got the soap as a gift from a friend. After trying the soap I fell in love with it. Soap Kitchen is the reason we now use bar soap again. I use the tea tree oil soap for my face and body. Let me tell you, I'm not a person who messes with my facial soap. I've been using Shiseido to wash my face for years but one day I ran out and gave the tea tree oil soap a try. It was wonderful! The soap washed away all the dirt and left my face squeaky clean! It did not leave a soapy film feeling on my face and it's a lot cheaper than Shiseido. I just assumed that all soaps leave a film or leave your skin dry, but not their soap. My son had a rash, and the soap has helped to get rid of it. I use their coffee soap in the kitchen. I like cooking with a lot of garlic, and I noticed that the coffee soap removes any trace of garlic smell from my hands after I use it. A definite plus. You could buy their stuff online, but I'd recommend checking them out in person because you can smell for yourself just how refreshing their soaps are. I love the Soap Kitchen and how much it has helped me. The owner is also and angle who really cares about her customer. I love the soap kitchen! The family that owns it are very kind and knowledgeable about their product. I always get a little sample from them on checkout of a soap sliver. They smell so good. I mainly go here to get the tea tree oil shave bar. It's true, the prices are on the more expensive side at this family owned business. It's pushing $8-10 per bar. But, I will say that everything is made with a ton of love and lasts forever. My shave bar lasted for about a year. How many shaving cans do you go through in a year? It adds up. Came to the shop to browse, and though I ended up not purchasing anything (pricier than I expected), I was given two samples of soap. I've tried both samples (lavender eucalyptus w/ Shea butter & green tea verbena) and will come again next time I'm in town. Loved how they make the soaps on the premises, and are all-natural! I love this store though its soap is a little expensive. I went there after watching the show on tv, but I didn't buy since it's not that cheap. I left without buying any, the shop owner gave me a small piece of sample. I tried it right away when I got home and I was hooked :-) I just came back there and decided to buy some, also I took my friend with me, she loves it too. I bought some for my Mother-in-law. I got tons of Christmas gifts here (and a couple little gifts for myself)! The packaging for the gifts was so cute, and the soaps smell divine. Pick up the mint verbena lip balm... It's fantastic. I have to thank my Boss/Friend for introducing me to this fabulous place. I ran an errand for my Boss during the holidays and it was to the Soap Kitchen. I was so amazed at all the variety of scented soaps they offer and loved that they actually have the kitchen in the location. The service was amazing and so super friendly. Well, not only did I get the errand I was suppose to get but I ended up picking up several soaps for myself. They have my favorite.....Sandalwood & Pachouli. The soaps are gentle on the skin, they last for weeks and the scent stays on your body all day. Truly love this place. Thank you Boss for introducing me to the Soap Kitchen :)!!! read more
