Solo diner review: 2/23/25. I had a reservation for brunch on this Sunday at noon and I'm so glad I did. I had come down for brunch before seeing a matinee at the Shakespeare Theatre and there was also a Caps game that day; the dining room was packed with fans in Caps gear getting something to eat before the game. I was seated immediately at a comfortable table by the window where I had lots to see and watch. Service was attentive and my food came out faster than I would have imaged for how busy the kitchen must have been. One of the things I really enjoyed was that they brought me bottles of still and sparkling water. Not only could I dispense my own refills, but the inclusion of sparkling water was an unexpected and elevated touch. I got the Smith Eggs Benedict (which comes with a complimentary breakfast cocktail!). Eggs were cooked beautifully and the breakfast potatoes were savory without being over seasoned. Definitely worth a visit for a quick downtown bite, but try to make a reservation if you can! read more

This is the spot when you are looking to do a late brunch in Washington DC. The atmosphere was clean and very organized, got seated very quickly with no wait time . The server was great , make sure we order what we liked and was there to answer any questions we might have . The brunch specials were delicious, I order the smoked salmon Benny on potato waffles , which it was a great combination. We also tried the cornbread with chicken sausage. My friend lives a block away and this is his favorite spot. Unfortunately, whenever he brings me we get awful service, if any at all. On Sunday we went for brunch. We immediately got a cozy seat near the window. After 5 minutes, of waiting on the waitress to come over, another table sat beside us. The waitress that walked past our table 10 times without acknowledging us, immediately took the other table water and attended to them. I went back to the hostess to inquire on who our waitress was to ensure the waitress was not ignoring us. The greeter goes, yes Jenny is helping you too so I asked if there was a reason Jenny walked past our table so many times but immediately helped the other table as soon as they sat. The greeter goes actually no, you had a different waitress but as me and the greeter look over to where I was sitting, we both watch Jenny take the menus we left at the table and prepare the now empty table for the next patrons she would prefer to help. Once my friend saw this, he interrupted my conversation with the greeter to tell me "we're leaving!!" We left and went to a different establishment that did not exhibit prejudice or preferential treatment to guests based on how they look. Will neverrrrrrrr go back to the smith. read more

The Smith is located in the heart of downtown DC and has a variety of food options to choose from. It's pretty pricey but the quality of the food is great. The calamari was very crispy. The burger and fries were very tasty as well. The waiter was very nice but the service was slow. Instead of the restaurant is beautiful. There's a nice outdoor patio area in front of the restaurant as well. I would get there early or make a reservation. It gets packed during the week in the evenings. read more

We visited with a good size party of 7. Exceptional service. We started out with the burrata appetizer and the calamari. They were both excellent. Also may I note that the fresh sourdough bread was fresh & plentiful with butter, the real stuff. We enjoyed the brunch menu especially the cocktails! My Bloody Mary was generous... and three of us loved the shrimp and grits; my girlfriend enjoyed her grilled chicken sandwich and I had a bite of my son's NY strip and it was tasty and perfectly grilled. This would be 3.5 stars. We were seated off the bat for a late lunch in very tight quarters even though the restaurant was pretty empty and then we waited a good bit for a waiter. Once he found out he had us (poor comm from the front) he was good. We split the appetizer of Mac and cheese and chips with blue cheese. The chips would be 100 times better if the sauce for them came on the side instead of globbed on top. The Mac and cheese should be a meal not an app and was absolutely fantastic, superb Mac & cheese! My husband and I were looking for a brunch spot and a came across this place. We went on a Saturday around 12:30ish and they were busy but we got seated right away. I will say their seating arrangements are cozy on the inside. We were seated what felt like in the middle of the floor but you're right next to other 2-person seated tables lol. They have outdoor seating as well but it was too hot to sit outside. It looks like they're known for their cocktails but because of the heat we weren't interested in drinking. My husband got an iced mocha though that was good. They bring you bottled water that's still and sparkling so you have an option. For breakfast, we both did the egg & bacon platter without cheese in the omelette. It was an herb omelette with 2 slices of bacon and potato waffles which were basically hash browns cooked in the shape of a waffle which was cool. This place was selected by one of my good girlfriends before going to a show nearby. The restaurant was very inviting with a classic black and white tile on the floors. The service was quick and fast as we were able to place our orders have some great conversations prior to our meals coming out. I ordered the salmon with roasted potatoes and a red Sangria. My salmon was good however I had to request additional cream sauce to balance out the meal. The portion was smaller than I expected. My sangria was really good. The restaurant has a full bar and it was pretty busy in there. We were able to make our show in time. Parking in the area can be hectic but, I was happy I was dropped off on this day. I recently returned back to The Smith and had a very different experience than my previous visit. We went on a very busy night, due to the holiday market, so it could have just been an off night. But this latest visit was just really off. One of the plusses of this visit was that we were seated fairly close to our reservation time. This was something I was a little nervous about given the backlog of cold people piling in to get dinner. Our server was a little rushed and strange. Not everyone is warm or welcoming but it was just very weird interactions the entire night. I ordered a glass of Malbec, which is a wine I normally think is fantastic. But this certainly was not to my taste but I drank it anyway. My partner decided to get a taste before committing (after tasting the Malbec) and tried the Pinot Noir. That was also not very good. So he opted for a hot toddy. We should have been suspicious about this order since the waiter left and came back and asked what alcohol he'd like in the hot toddy. When we asked, isn't it normally whiskey or bourbon? The server got weirdly defensive and said some people order it with vodka or gin. Interesting... When the drink arrived, it tasted like hot watered down whiskey. It was terrible and my partner sent it back and decided it might not be a drinking night for him. I tried one last go and tasted the Cabernet Saugvinon, my go-to safety wine since I will almost like any cab. Nope, not this one! So I also passed on the 2nd glass of wine. Finally our food arrived and my burger came out freezing. Though my partner's mac n' cheese came out pipping hot (hmm, I wonder who's food we were waiting on?!) haha. Oh well, I was really hungry at this point and just ate it. Would we come back? Maybe, but it certainly gives me pause to come back again between the spotty service, the wine menu, the bad cocktail and the cold food. read more

This is one of the go-to brunch spots for friends and I pre-theater or pre-museum in the neighborhood. We favor the regular eggs Benedict and the omelets. One time I tried the Benedict Johnny; that was not a favorite. The cornbread was unexpectedly spicy, which was not a plus. We've always had prompt and friendly service. It's a bit loud, but still amenable to conversation. There are other places that have impressed me more, but this is certainly a solid place for brunch. read more

Delicious food in an electric atmosphere! Service was top notch. I found this restaurant by happy accident. If you find yourself settling for Hard Rock take the couple of extra minutes around the corner and go to The Smith! They were super accommodating of my teenager with picky eating habits. One thing I did notice is how loud it was. People were eating and having a good time so it wasn't negative at all. However, if you are looking for a quiet meal this is not your place. It was hard to have a conversation unless you were almost yelling. It could also be the acoustics of the space? I enjoyed my burger which was cooked to my exact liking and served on a nice brioche bun. My son really liked his buttered pasta with parmesan cheese; simple enough. They were able to alter another dish to provide him with a nicely bread pan fried chicken breast to substitute for chicken tenders. He gave two thumbs up which is high praise. Recently visited this place again since a few friends had a concert at the Capitol One Arena, and this place is very close. I highly recommend it if you want a good dinner spot nearby. We had reservations and were seated right away, which was fortunate given how packed it was this Saturday evening. While the service was not the best this time, it was understandable due to the busyness, but the food was excellent. Dinner: The Smith Burger // This burger was very good, though it had a ton of toppings. The bacon shallot jam was delicious, adding a sweet touch. However, if you're looking for a basic burger, this might not be the best choice for you. The fries were also a favorite, always hot and well-salted, and perfect for sharing. Kale + Quinoa + Salmon // The salad was also delightful. We got the dressing on the side, and while we could have used a bit more, it was still good. It was odd that they didn't ask for my preferred salmon temperature, but it came out slightly over medium and was cooked well. The salad was delicious, with a thicker-than-expected but very tasty dressing. The sun-dried cranberries added a nice touch, pairing nicely with the salmon. I like the ambiance of the place. It gives you an industrial feel. Especially in the bathroom. Only complaint is the stalls are very dark inside the bathroom. My friend and I went during happy hour on a Fri. We had the special, which was scallops and risotto. We actually split it. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the risotto was delicious. We both got a side to share and honestly we didn't need it. Everyone spoke to us as they walked by, the employees that is. They have 2 large tables by the bar that is for shared sitting so yes you may sit with someone you don't know. Also, we did receive bread and butter. We both expected it to be warm but it wasn't. A group of us came here during a conference that was being held just down the street. It's in proximity to many of the major hotels and was a fantastic place to meet up and have some delicious food! The places squarely, new, American, and has a lot of good options, some of which are unique and many of which are familiar. The drink menu is creative, and the choices are plentiful. With our group, we had salads, brick, pressed chicken, some delicious steaks, and a number of other delicious entrées. They play a little bit on the appetizer menu, but everything is very safe. The sesame calamari was probably the favorite dish of the evening, and the brussels sprouts were also very popular. Everybody's entrées were enjoyed, and the place has an unmistakably chill, yet vibrant feel. It's a great place to just hang out for a bit! The service was friendly and quick, and our waitress took very good care of us. This is definitely a spot that is worth checking out, and a place that we will be back to the next time we have a group event in the DC area. read more

First time here, the garlic parm fries were great. The fried calamari was okay, there wasn't much squid it was mostly fried zucchini. My main dish, the braised short rib mafaldine and it was really good. Great flavor and the meet was cooked well. Service though was a little slow. I visited on a Sunday with friends midday and they had a shorter menu because of the time of day. The food was fine but the service was underwhelming. We started with on waitress and at some point we had another waiter without any acknowledgement of a change in shift. The new waiter was very abrupt and came by to frequently grab plates from us with little awareness for our space. The food was decent I'm giving a 3 star rating because of the service. Really cool interior here and a great location to grab food before an event at Capital One Arena. We grabbed a reservation a few days before for a weekend brunch, table of 4. On the phone the hostess told us that the server would be able to help answer any allergy questions related to a gluten allergy. Once there it took a while for the server to come ask us for drinks and took a long time to see the server in between times they stopped by. The server had to ask a lot of questions about the food to the kitchen and did not seem confident in their responses, which is unsettling for any one with an allergy. Overall the food was good but not great, however the fact that each entree included a drink was a crowd pleaser. read more

I went to the Smith for a brunch date yesterday around 1 PM. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the host who then sat me immediately. My server came over to the table and offered sparkling & still water, which was awesome that we got both choices, but he forgot to mention his name. For brunch, I ordered their buttermilk pancakes which had sticky toffee syrup and was topped with a pecan maple butter. I also ordered over medium eggs and bacon. Let me tell y'all, the pancakes were some of the best I ever had at a restaurant. The pairing of pecan maple butter with that sticky toffee syrup was the best combination ever. The pancakes were à la cart so I got the eggs and bacon as sides. The eggs aren't listed on the menu but you're still able to order them which was great. I love that if you order a brunch entrée, they give you a complimentary brunch cocktail so I ordered their cocktail called "the spritz". It was very refreshing and reminded me of an aperol spritz. Even though, I never got the servers name the service was a 10 out of 10 from all the staff. I will definitely be back to try more options and I will probably get the pancakes again that's just how good they were. read more

We stopped here between sessions of the ACC tournament and really enjoyed our meal. We had a shrimp cocktail to start that was very fresh and delicious. I had the kale and quinoa salad for me entree. It was very flavorful and filling. My wife had the gnocchi and absolutely loved it! I had an espresso martini for dessert and it was delicious. My wife had the S'mores in a Cup and she loved the combination of toasted marshmallows and chocolate pudding. They also give you sparkling water on the table (no charge). The selection is great, the prices are a tad pricey for drinks and apps but the food was overall good. While it was extremely busy, it would've been nice to at least get an update and/or apology when the appetizer spread that we ordered as entrees took for-ev-er! Absolutely the best Pork Chop I have ever had in a restaurant. It sits on a bed of Jalapeno Grits and the flavor of the two paired together are remarkable! Now I am not a big Pork Chop fan, but this was well worth it. Try the Corn Off the Cobb as well because the vinagrette used on this dish will change your mind about how corn should be eaten. I opted for the kale and quinoa salad with chicken and it was very good - fresh and filling with lots of flavor! Strategically placed in Penn Quarter near several excellent hotels, it's a quick walk to a fun dinner out after a day of exploring. Excellent waitstaff makes sure you have a fun evening that isn't rushed. The drink menu has something for everyone: beers, wines (red, white, sparkling, blush, sangria), cocktails and mocktails. Food items that stood out were the raw oysters, shrimp with squid ink pasta, and fish. Kids items even come in a more "gourmet" format. Complimentary bread was thick and satisfying. After running a few nearby errands, I walked by The Smith on a beautiful evening and spontaneously decided to grab a quick bite on the patio and enjoy the warm autumn evening. At the time, "girl dinner" was all over my TikTok feed and because I've been eating these types of dinners for a very long time, it felt like the perfect moment for one. So, I ordered the shrimp cocktail, truffle fries and a glass of wine. The wine came out in one of those glasses that I usually would drink whiskey on the rocks in. I looked around to see if that was the norm (or perhaps just the norm on the patio) and then realized it was not. When I asked if I could have the wine in a stemmed glass after realizing there were others with them, the waiter came back with one without an issue. The shrimp cocktail came out pretty quickly, but I think something must have fallen through the cracks with the order because I had to check in to see if the fries were still coming once I was almost done with the shrimp cocktails. The waiter apologized and very quickly returned to the table with fries. Overall, for my snack-like (but satisfying) dinner, I spent over $50 before tax and tip. The moment of reality hit and I didn't necessarily feel as though I would do that again all things considered between service and price points for the simple snack like items I ordered. I was surprised to get the calamari with the sauce on top, not served in the side like most places, and I can't do spicy so I was disappointed, buuuuut the flavor was amazing - the sesame is a nice touch, just wish the spicy drizzle was on the side. I was hesitant about the brick smashed chicken, just because it sounds so aggressive, hahahaha, but my partner ordered it so I got to have some and I wish I ordered my own...it was so incredibly flavorful! The burger was good, the fries were amazing! The vibe is cool - could be casual or fancy. There's a back room that looks like a speakeasy. We came by for breakfast on a Monday morning in March. Location is beautiful on a corner. Bar opens at 11:30 daily. Servers were good. Place had plenty of space for crowds of people. Food was very good. The Smoked Salmon Benedict was very good with a good portion of salmon and a heaping portion of potatoes with sweet grilled onions. The Avocado toast with arugula and a light lemon vinaigrette was very good. Only issue was the poached eggs were hard and not soft yolks. Would we come back? There are ton of places to see and try. I love the Smith. Whether it's in Washington DC or it's in New York at home. It never seems to fail. This was our second visit while on this trip to DC. Always a crowd favorite. The steak was made well. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the apple pie à la mode. They sat us down very quickly without reservation and was very attentive whenever we needed extra cutlery and the like. The place was very busy and buzzing with families and friends. Visited The Smith in Washington, DC and ordered the Smith Burger with cheddar, bacon shallot jam, crispy onions, house pickles, TSB sauce, all on a brioche bun, with a side salad. The flavor profile was nice, the bacon jam added a good touch of sweetness, but the burger itself was a bit dry. I also expected more of a crunch from the crispy onions, but there weren't many on the burger, which was a bit of a letdown. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, it took longer than expected for the food to arrive. That said, the service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and professional. Overall, it was a decent experience. I'd give it 4 stars for the great service and ambiance, but there's definitely room for improvement with the burger. read more
