We had pretty high expectations for this place, based on online reviews and personal recommendations, but I never go into a new place with too high of an expectation- I try to be reasonable, and above all, fair.
That said, I'll start with what they got "right"; the positives.
The place is bright and clean and rather "airy", especially for such a tiny space. It helped that they have a garage style door that can open up an entire side of the building. Our server was friendly, professional and courteous.
The beer list was well thought-out, if a little limited. The drinks menu was creative, fun, but I wouldn't go as 'unique'.
And here's where it all goes wrong...
The space is small. Limited options for seating. I feel as though they might want to take away just one '2-top' table, thus giving diners a little more "elbow room". However, I've eaten at some "micro" restaurants in NYC and I'm not opposed to close quarters, if everything else is on point... ...so the space itself is not one of my overall criticisms.
What bothers me is the thought that my wife and I were given the "rube" treatment. I feel that they may have taken a look at us, the fact that we were without beards, flip flops, ironic tee's, etc and decided that we were a couple of yokels from the sticks or squares from the 'burbs. This is my reasoning for this assumption. I really can't imagine any other reason that the table next to us would warrant more visits from the waitress- to a ratio of 5-to-1. It's not just that we were left alone for long periods of time. This often happens when there's only one server on- even in a small establishment, they can fall behind, and I'd never fault a waitress for that... ...but for each time she made it by our table, there seemed to be five visits to the next table; and we also ordered multiple items, drinks, etc. I don't think it was a matter of that other table requiring more runs. I honestly don't know what the reasoning was behind this lapse of service, and the server was decent in every other regard- so that's not really factoring in to my overall "negative" review. No, I'd say it's something else. We'll, a couple something elses.
Culminating in that "toast"...
Okay, this is what we ordered: There was a great sounding special; a bluefish fritter with some sort of aioli. I bet this dish was great...when it was first cooked, a few hours before our arrival. I am No stranger to previously fried, re-heated food. I do it all the time myself at home, with left overs. But this wasn't supposed to be left-overs. I was anticipating "first time" food...something fresh. Too bad, because I could tell that the taste was there. ....I kept thinking how nice it would be if I invented time travel, so that I could get my hands on these little fritters when they were young..oh well...
We also ordered the poutine-type deal; French fries with gravy and duck confit. This was decent. Really quite nice actually. The fries were nice and dark and flavorful, just the way I like 'em. The duck wasn't the best tasting duck I've ever had, but it's still a pretty neat combination, overall. I have had better poutine, though- even at my local pub. But still- I give 'em an A for effort.
Then comes the Pimento toast. We ordered it mostly based on a pic someone posted online. In the photo it looked rich, cheesy and delicious... ...not the 3 tiny burnt-ends of baguette with desiccated char on top that came to our table. (see photo). Really? Someone looked at this plate leaving the pass and said "Okay send it out"?
Maybe it was the last of the night's bread. Maybe they were down to only 2 portions and someone made the executive decision to give the Good looking portion to the table with the fella in the man-bun, flip flops and filthy feet. "Give the burnt remains to that table over there; the rubes from Cranston. They won't know any better" That's all I can imagine. Because if this place consistently put out plates like this, there's no way they'd be getting all these positive reviews. read more
