I love The Sloop! I started going there when I worked across the street back in 2009; it was the beginning of me falling in love with Ballard and moving here from Downtown. The 1st time I went in there, I just felt at home. I know it's trendy to use the term "dive bar", but it is simply what a bar should be. The staff is friendly, the regulars are cool and entertaining, the game is always on the tv(s), the food is consistently good and the beer is cold. Speaking of the beer, get Sloopersized! You know you want a 34oz mug of beer in your hand. I like the bacon cheeseburger, fish sandwich and fish & chips. If you're there with friends, share the Slooper nachos, they must weigh 3lbs. The seasoned fries are the best, try them! Walking across the street and having them twice a week caused my midsection to start becoming Sloopersized, but I digress. They have pool tables, pulltabs, Big Buck Hunter, darts and a jukebox. The games side of the bar is usually pretty packed. There are nightly dinner specials. It's a beer and wine bar. I love dive bars. This is definitely not my favorite. The thing that really ticked me off was their insanely poor staffing. Not only were there only two bartenders on a Saturday night, the one chick that was bartending was totally rude to everyone. She was just yelling over the crowd for people to bring her their IDs... well, it was very loud in there, and we didn't hear her, and some of us weren't walking up to the huge crowd around the bar to order anything, so we were just hanging out when the lady came up to us and started yelling at us. "You should have brought your IDs to me!!!! Aren't you listening?!!" She was awful- like an enraged kindergarten teacher. I would have tried a slooper-sized beer if I wasn't afraid of getting my head chewed off for gracing her with my mere presence. If you don't like working busy Saturday nights at a bar, then maybe you shouldn't be a bartender! Sure, it's crowded. There are thirty people standing in front of the bar impatiently waiting for their sloopersized beers (at only $6.50 I believe!! woot!). But take some Midol and get to work, you grumpy so and so! I refused to pay for anything in that bar after that lady's attitude. Luckily, I was with a bunch of Sloop fans, and they told me that this girl's attitude is normal for a Saturday (and they had those giant mugs in their hands the whole time). So basically, don't go there on Saturday unless you enjoy getting yelled at by some chick with a poor attitude and zero customer service skills. If I had ordered anything after the chewing I got, then I definitely would not have tipped. I would return for a Slooper-sized beer on any weekday most likely. However, I will work hard in the future to avoid that bartender!! My friends really like it here, so I can see returning often. I really appreciated the nice-ish bathrooms with Kleenex and complimentary lotion. That was a nice touch. The pool tables were awesome, although a little too close to the dart board... luckily, everyone that was playing had apparently good aim. So ditch that grumpy bartender and you got a fan is what I am saying! I am sad to have had a bad experience at such a dive bar favorite. I will have to make a return trip at some point and perhaps revise this... I have hope for the Sloop. I really wanted to go and have a fun time. Oh well. Maybe, and I am just suggesting for the future, they could have someone checking IDs at the door?? So that your bartender isn't so stressed she is popping veins in her forehead?? Just a thought. Went here on my birthday for the "Sloopersized" drinks and nachos. I read a lot of great reviews so I decided to try it out with a few friends since it sounded like a cool dive bar to try out. While walking up we saw the sign, so we knew we were at the right place. However, the outside looks more than a little sketchy and none of us were completely sure if we wanted to walk in. However, we came all the way here so we figured we should at least try it. The inside looks a LOT better than the outside, and the bartender was pretty nice. They were awesome too since this was the only place that actually gave me a free drink on my birthday. Their Sloopersized drinks were definitely impressive and exactly what I was hoping for/expecting. Though their nachos were definitely not as great as I was hoping for; the toppings weren't very well distributed and the chips were pretty soggy (like when you microwave nachos). Overall though this place is pretty good for drinks and has great prices. They also have champagne and wine for really great prices if you don't want a beer. I would definitely come back for another Sloopersized drink, but I think I'll pass on the food. read more

"Yeah I'd like to Slooper Size my beer please!" I love this place only because of these friggin' huge beers! Domestic beer only $3.50, that is about the same as any other bar but just for a bottle. I highly recommend this place but I also have a few suggestions before entering this place: Walk in with ID ready always! This is really important because they are huge sticklers here. Act sober, or better yet act really calm, if they suspect you have been drinking somewhere else they will refuse you, it's pretty ridiculous! But you can't lose if you follow these rules, once you have your seat or play darts they are not going to harass you or make you feel stupid, you just have to be on top of their game and out wit them! read more

The key is to order a "slooper size" 34 oz of beer, which comes in an enormous frosty mug. My top food picks are: (1) mushroom bacon swiss burger; (2) seasoned fries; (3) grilled cheese. This is my new favorite bar in Seattle. It's simple and unpretentious, a rare find in the surrounding neighborhood of Ballard. The food is some of the best I've ever had at a dive bar. I really like the club sandwich, fries, and of course the burger. Although they don't have liquor, there are still some good (and cheap) cider and wine options for those that don't like beer. Oh how I love a good dive. And the sloop is a slooptastic place to get a little sloopy. Huge beers for cheap prices and relaxed atmosphere to drink them in. The Sloop is the perfect place to bring a friend and unwind, but you may just find yourself getting challenged to a game of pool as bar games are in abundance. There is a variety of seating but why sit (plus the booths are falling apart)? Hoist up that giant glass (with two hands) and make new friends at the Sloop with the assistance of a giant amount of beer and some friendly competition. Then call on your sober friend or a taxi to drive your butt home, because the Sloop is just outside of stumbling range to most destinations. read more

A great dive, big beers, good food portions, cheap prices, conveniently located in my 'hood Ballard. I've enjoyed a few greasy hungover breakfasts that probably saved my life. All the yelpers complaining about the college-yuppie crowd might try breakfast, or weekday drinkin'. Very few waitstaff so be patient, it's worth the wait. Haven't been there in a few months - hope they still have Buck Hunter. I suck at darts, but still enjoy a game or two, and some pool. My only disappointment is what happened to the enormous taco portions?? Used to be able to order a $3 taco plate on Tuesday, share it & get 2 people full & drunk for less than $15. This was our kickball sponsored bar, so we would head over after a game for some pints. It's a nice atmosphere for a dive bar... definitely nicer than I originally expected. Unfortunately, the staff was consistently inattentive and had a bit of an attitude each time we visited last season. I can remember the first time I ever went to The Sloop.......which is a rarity. With their "Slooper-sized" beers it is amazing anyone can remember walking out of their doors. While it sells itself as an old seamen's (hee hee) bar it is quickly growing as a fashionable indy bar in Ballard. I enjoy the cheap/large beers, the inexpensive pool tables, and the company. Decor was your typical dive bar; old, tacky, clean but looks dirty, torn seats, small TV's and on the dark side; even though it was bright as hell outside. When I first walked in the place I thought, oh the food is going to suck. All I can say, I was shocked. Don't let this cheap ass place fool you. I cook for a living and I ordered the Cranberry and Turkey sandwich (I know, not your typical bar food). What dive bar has that on their menu? I mean really. I thought I was going to get some turkey lunch meat and I got REALLY turkey breast and a lot of it. The only thing I didn't like about my sandwich was the white bread, nothing special but what do you except for $7.00. I only ate half of it. Ok, ok...
