This is a hidden gem - I say hidden because every times I've been here, it hasn't been overpacked like every other Seattle bar I've been to. It's got a great casual vibe and the bartenders are so awesome - they're the type that remember your order and are attentive to everyone even though they're always running around busy doing something. Tuesday BINGO - This is what I LOVE coming to!! At 8 PM, they have Bingo for all - free to play, multiple around PRIZES (which range from $25 GC to Pringles!!!) I love how fun Kevin makes it - I feel like Bingo can be hard to host and to make entertaining but Kevin always makes it fun and enjoyable. He keeps everyone engaged and keeps things moving - never a down time except for break time. This is definitely not your grandmother's bingo! And is there ever a tie in Bingo? NO! Wednesday Trivia - They also have trivia on Wednesdays at 7 and April does a great job hosting that too. Again, free to play, 6 on a team, and prizes!! I love that Targy's has all these super fun events and free for everyone to enjoy. I mean, Tuesdays are slow night so what better way to spend it than to play Bingo and drink! So much fun, can always find street parking. The food is lacking here - boxed pizza, frozen pizza bites, frozen pretzels, etc. However, they allow you to bring food in and just enjoy their drinks. I loved the ambiance of the bar. The decor was great. It is the kind of place I would hang out in, if I were a barfly and lived in the neighborhood. The menu was limited to frozen items that were microwaved at the bar. I was not sure if that was very sanitary. Did not see bartender wash hands or put on gloves. There was one service person on duty. She somehow managed to keep up with the increasing crowd. Kudos to her. read more

Great place to hang out and have a drink. It's very low key and friendly. There is shuffleboard, pool and darts. Not sure but I think there are some snacks there as well. They have trivia and some other events the place can be kinda busy at times but it's fun and lively not packed and hostile. For sure will continue to visit when I need a a drink. read more

I came in yesterday around 6:30 and the service was not great. We came in and ordered some drinks and a soft pretzel at the bar. Tried ordering more food too but we were told nothing was being served except pretzel and pizza. We then waited at our table for 35 minutes for the soft pretzel, but it never came. When I went to the bartender to ask how much longer, she said "when I get to it". And I said "oh, are you also the one making the food?" and she said "yes, I can refund you if you want". So, we did that and that was painless and quick. I understand that it was busy in there (there was a kraken game going on) and there was only one employee for probably 50 people in the place, but I don't understand why nothing was said to us about the food. It would be completely understandable to let us know that she was the only one there and the food would take a long time, or to let us know that she probably wouldn't be able to do any food. But, that did not happen and there was no hint of understanding that 35 min might be too long to wait for a soft pretzel. read more

A classic old-school dive, surviving at least in part by virtue of having no competition whatsoever in hyper-expensive, yuppified upper Queen Ann. What a fun find! And such a relief on a hot, muggy August afternoon; an oasis of cold beer and working-class sanity in a gentrified desert. What's more, it's very clean and well-appointed. There are fun bits of memorabilia to peruse, pool tables and old video games, shuffleboard, bar-top video poker and a modern juke. The cave-like atmosphere makes it feel a little like the dinner-table blanket fort you made as a kid- a little hideaway, but with beer! Bingo on Tuesdays, trivia on Wednesdays, and happy hour 4-7 ($1 off most everything, $.50 off cans). Their t-shirts are cool! Service is good too; efficient, smart, attentive, pleasant, prompt, and informative. So why the missing star? No food to speak of, except prefab pizza and bags of chips and nuts. If they made a decent sandwich here...heck, they may not be able to get rid of me! But damn, I love that they're here, now, and I'm rooting for them to remain. Seattle needs to remember what it was, appreciate and enjoy its hard-edged, working-class heritage. If it doesn't, when this flavor-of-the-month boom passes by, it will have nothing culturally to fall back on. Support this local, and your mom-and-pop joints all around town. This is a great little neighborhood dive bar. I was here for Halloween and it was packed. It was a super rainy night and parking was easy on the street. Most everyone was dressed up and festive. There is one central bar in the middle that was hard to get a drink at during the peak time. There was a DJ and some good drunk dancing going on. We hung out mostly in the game area where we played darts. There was also a good group playing pool. The alcohol closet is right next to the dart board so we were bothered every now and then with the staff coming in and out of there. They were all friendly though so I didn't mind. Once it slowed down around 1, we sat at the bar and enjoyed some friendly conversation with some randoms (no SEATTLE FREEZE here). Great little spot! read more

Targy's didn't have a sign for the last 7 years. Seriously, you either knew about it or you didn't, like some speakeasy from back in the day. Quick story: I was sitting next to an 90 year old woman at a wedding and we got to talking about Queen Anne, and she started telling me about the heydays of Targy's from when she was a much younger woman. You could see the sparkle in her eye remembering romantic interludes and late night drinking. That about sums up Targy's. It had a heyday. I'm sure of it. Some would claim the pinnacle was Helmer Trestal's ownership over the last 10 years, when you were lucky to be allowed a beer and the clientele didn't own cell phones. A true drinking establishment.. Earlier this year, new ownership took over. They put up a sign. They cleaned up the smoke stained interior. Post softball game celebrations are popular. People even come here to.... God forbid... interact. They pulled back the tarnished layers of an institution, not knowing what to expect, and discovered that the soul remains. The people are still good people, that sort of non pretentious crowd that just wants to hang out. Younger, cell phone equipped, and more accustomed to micro brews than Rainier, this new breed of Targy's regulars could, I'm still convinced, reign in a new era for this great neighborhood tavern. So I walked by this place all the time. At first I just didn't realize it even WAS a place and once I realized it was a bar I was intrigued. I have to admit, I was a tad intimidated mostly because there are no windows and no sound or anything outside. I finally talked a friend into going with me on a Friday night. The second you open the door you are hit the loud music and lots of conversations. (Must have some pretty good insulation ha ha.) It was crowded but we managed to get a table in the back. 2$ Kokanees! My kinda place. The bartenders aren't super friendly to newbies it seems, but the regulars have an in with them. If you like to people watch this is the place. Alot of the crowd you wouldn't expect to see in this neighborhood bar. All in all a great place to grab a cheap beer and play pool, if you can get a table! read more

Targy's is a no nonsense dive bar hidden in Upper Queen Anne where you would least expect a place like this to thrive. It is a bar in it's purest form, so much so that I think they only offer food for legal reasons. I love how every time I have been to Targy's there has been a non sequitur mix of patrons bellying up to the bar. Everyone from the way over dressed twenty somethings obviously pre-funking on their way to some "hip" new place on Capitol Hill, to the low-key regulars who probably sit in the same seat every time and (I hope) chuckle to themselves as the parade of the follies of youth pass them by. I have been here a number of times since my arrival in the area back in December. I love this place. Simple, friendly, fun. I stopped by this past Saturday afternoon (8/11) and saw the strangest thing behind the bar: liquor! Bartender said they started serving the hard stuff on Thursday. Out of habit and respect for tradition, I stuck with beer, but my friend (first-timer to Targy's) ordered a martini. Gasp! Luckily, this offense did not go unnoticed, as another patron said, for all to hear, "I take my gin on the rocks!" Guess this is no longer a tavern, in the strictest sense. If you go the liquor route, might I recommend sticking to simply neat or rocks. Just seems appropriate. read more

I like a place with a seemingly limitless supply of paper coasters that I can zing like ninja stars at my friends while they laze around on comfy leather couches. I like a place that has dart boards. Especially when I win. I like a place with a billiards table, and folks playing who don't mind me crouching down in front of their shot and making funny faces. Ok, they did mind. But they didn't try to hit the ball hard enough that it would launch from the table and strike me in the nose. Maybe that's the part I liked. I like a place where I tell the bartender I'm driving and can I get a soda and all I got is a credit card and he doesn't charge me. I should have given him a particular flavor, though, as plain old soda water is just... kinda... gross. And finally, I like a place where when I'm driving over to it I'm like, "Where the fuck AM I?! This is a residential neighborhood, I must be lost!" And then I'm wrong because regardless of all the houses around there is a little pub sitting there. I probably wouldn't like it too much if I lived there and drunk loud people were coming out in the middle of the night to either a) fight or b) yell nonsense like drunken people tend to do. read more

It smelled like a bar. Actually, it smelled like a cross between a bar and an alcoholic that hasn't bathed in a week. It wasn't that permeating, but it was omnipresent. It was exactly how I felt it should smell. I am another of the seen/heard about it forever crowd, and last night was my first time. Happy hour is 4-7pm, and all I know is that they had $3 Maritime IPA on tap, which is an amazing beer. You also pay $4 for it at the actually brewery in Ballard. Came from out of town with some girlfriends friends to celebrate my last weekend before getting married. We were staying at a nearby airbnb and walked to the bar from our house. Immediately the bouncer was incredibly rude and seemed over the top irritated. I even asked him if he was having a bad night to which he answered no. Upon sitting up at the bar the bartender with purple hair was also annoyed beyond belief. It was pretty obvious that her and the bouncer were not a fan of our group right off the bat. A few of us started singing along to the music that was playing and the bartender immediately shushed us and told us we needed to be quiet because there was apartments that were above the bar...... this is a dive bar. Not a classy speakeasy!! It was laughable that she was shushing us in a BAR!! She was acting as if we were screaming to the words of the song like we were at a live concert!! She continued to shush us all night, constantly reminding us about the apartments above. It was obvious that the second we walked in that her and the bouncer weren't a fan of our group. We ended up leaving with our drinks unfinished because the tension she was giving off was painfully uncomfortable. Real shame for her and the bar. We were a group of 10 buying drinks and tipping and had 2 other parties of people buy us drinks to congratulate me on my upcoming marriage! Lost profits for the bar and tips for her. I'll never come back to this bar and would never recommend it to anyone. read more

Something about a dive that gets me all warm and fuzzy inside. Targy's fits the bill for this. As soon as you walk in you get that damp, beer smell. The neon beer signs litter the windows, two dart boards, two pool tables, and jukebox just really round this place out. The actual bar itself is very large which helps get the crowd their drinks quicker. If you come here don't expect a high-end craft cocktail, rather get yourself a Coors light bottle and put yourself on the list for "next" on billiards! read more

This great tavern practically makes me want to take up residence on a certain couple's front porch. I almost don't want to say too much because, well, let's just say twits need not apply. A group of 3 couples clearly coming straight from a wedding reception arrived around midnight and kind of ruined the low key vibe. But otherwise, this bar is perfection and exactly what you want to adopt as your new and only hang out. Well chilled brew poured with out foam in their pitchers. Plenty of water for help in sobering up after said brew is sucked down. Ridiculously friendly bartender who is very attentive to those at his bar. Regulars who make easy conversation with the faces they recognize, but don't look down on those that they don't. The most brilliant juke box mix ever that sent the game room into song and a special Journey tune that practically sent L and me to our knees. And darts, darts, beautiful darts. Dart arm malady (somehow nowhere mentioned on www.webmd.com, hmmm) will hit you 24 hours later, mind you, but if you're willing to suffer the health woes, I challenge you to a game of Cricket. Growing up in the Midwest, Targy's reminds me of the taverns in Peoria, except they have microbrews instead of PBR (they do have Rainier, though, in addition to 6 other beers on tap). There isn't much to say about the decor, but they now have flat screen TV. So Targy is best appreciated as something simple. It does have its charm, but it is a small space, and I can see how a single obnoxious group could ruin the evening as mentioned in some of the other reviews. But last evening, it was a quiet group of older locals, and was a great way to spend a rainy winter evening. read more
