Went to this restaurant as in walking distance in Brookline. This is an apparently elevated Indian food restaurant. The food was interesting, the saag was blended to smoother creamy sauce with a hint of mushroom or truffle which was unexpected. The food was generally too spicy hot for mild. We are glad we didn't order spicier. naan was delicious. Salad was huge - enough for four to six people. Food tasted good. Good presentation. Staff could work on clearing plates earlier or using smaller plates. The table was absolutely cluttered unnecessarily. A few things stood out as questionable. Our waiter seemed a little spacy. Order didn't go in on time and then also forgot details. So maybe our food was spicier bc he forgot that we ordered mild. Also, I noticed water dripping from the kitchen ceiling and this kind of took away my appetite. Staff very apologetic for delays in our food order. read more

I had really been looking forward to trying this place and was finally able to on Valentines Day. The decoration was adorable and I'm pretty sure they were booked out for the evening. There was a great singer, pianist, and sax player to really set the mood. They were super fun, especially when a couple got engaged! To start, I got their ginger martini and while my friend went with a Do-er neat (not a whiskey drinker myself, lol). He tried to order 2 of their beers but they were out of both. My drink came after 15 mins and then we had to remind the waiter about his whiskey. That took another 10. We started with the chicken bao buns and the samosas. Both spectacular! My only complaint is the little size for the samosa size. For our mains we got the short rib and the white butter chicken. The butter chicken could've used a bit more chicken for the price and was frankly a bit tough. The sauce was great. The short rib was flavorful and packed the perfect punch. Dipping the garlic naan in both sauces was my fav part!! Overall an ok experience. I want to give the restaurant grace because it was very packed but service was poor. It was a weekend going for early (5ish) dinner prior to other nightly events. Walked in to the restaurant with about 3 other tables seated, service and menu came quickly, got our orders in, and it just went downhill from there. First off, that cocktail. I gather it is inspired with Indian flavors, and I can take a chili pepper kick in a drink. But this is straight up tobasco water. The guava part is visible but not detected in the mixture other than it's contribution to the thick-ish blob at the bottom. Not at all a fruity drink with a kick, more like torture solution to burn one's throat. In hindsight, I should have sent it back coz it was not enjoyable at all. Food was overall good, actually. Good portion, great flavors -- the salad, flatbread, and the goat entree. Didn't like the balsamic glaze in the Mediterranean salad though. Honestly, it was likely from a bottle, which is fine if it wasn't so overly sweet. As the restaurant started to fill out, it was getting harder to get service - basic things like asking for the check and to-go boxes. It took several tries and more than 15 minutes before we could go. Our waiter apologized for a busy night, which we appreciated. But the other guy we flagged down along the way seemed to just say yes and walked off without communicating to anyone who needs to receive the message. Strange. The digital menu is great, but the pictures all get flattened as we click into the item. Something that can use some adjustments. read more

I don't know if they were having an off night, but the food was not great. We tried quite a few dishes but nothing was right. The tandoori chicken pizza was extremely salty in certain places. The fried mushrooms were spicier than they should've been. The paneer in the appetizer was rock hard. The chicken biryani, while flavorful, was unnaturally red and also so spicy and without enough white rice to balance the masala. It also took a while to receive our dishes. We couldn't even flag a server down because we were seated in the part of the restaurant, right near the entrance sort of like their sunroom. You can feel kinda isolated from the main seating area. No idea why they seated us there since there was plenty of room in the main section. Overall, this was disappointing for sure. read more

We tried the Smoked Paneer & Tomato Flatbread, Grilled Salmon Skewers, Cauliflower Fritters, Deconstructed Samosa Chaat, Thai Spiced Tofu Bao, and Tandoori Chicken Bao, all of which were enjoyable. However, they could improve the drinks menu. We ordered the Chicken Biryani for dinner, which was decent, and the Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart for dessert, which was delicious. Ordered takeout on a rainy day from The Silk and did not regret it. I got the chicken noodles (street style), chicken manchurian, and cauliflower manchurian - fantastic food! I got everything mild with sauces on the side and that was definitely the way to go. OK, first, I hate leaving 1 star reviews. Second, I hate even more doing it to a place that has a 5.0. But if it weren't for the photos, I'd almost be certain that I was at a different place than the 5.0 reviews. Because this place was terrible! I had reservations and we showed up on time. We were seated right away, which was the one of 2 things that went well tonight. They brought us tablet menus, which were weird to navigate and things weren't easy to find. Getting to the drink menu from the food menu was confusing. Then we sat there for 20 minutes waiting for someone to take our order. We finally flagged someone down and got him to take our order. Then we didn't see anyone for another 30 minutes. Tables that were seated after us were being served before our drinks even came out. I got the same guy's attention again and asked about our order - they got our drinks out - they gave me someone else's wine and my mango lassi came in a plastic bottle. Seriously? The app we ordered looked like it had been under a heat lamp but tasted OK. When our entrees finally came out, they brought them out one at a time and with several minutes between them. Our 2 orders of garlic naan turned out to be 3 pieces each (for $5) and it was over-baked to the point of being hard. The entrees were meh at best. I tasted my wife's dish and it was just weird. My daughter, who loves Indian / Asian food didn't even ask for a take-out box for the half of her entree left. Honestly, it looked like no one working there (except maybe the bartender) had ever worked at a restaurant before. It wasn't busy when we got there, but it was fairly busy when we left - 2 HOURS LATER. The service was terrible and the food matched it pretty closely. Hopefully, they'll figure things out and get better at this whole "take care of the customer" thing. They managed to get our split check correct, which was the second and last thing they did right. We won't be back to try for a third thing. read more

The food was no better than other Indian restaurants in Boston and I had to wait a very long time for my entree. My partner's Pinot Grigio was poor. Came for Valentine's Day dinner to have my expectations overwhelmingly exceeded. While appearing to be small from the outside, the dining room expanded immensely upon entering. Was greeted by a cheerful staff, felt like true guests, and was brought into a room filled with the delicious aroma of Indian cuisine. The evening featured a live band playing soft jazz classics, which added to the romantic ambiance. The staff was very dedicated and friendly. The food was beyond delicious. They offered a Valentine's Day menu, with specialized drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The regular menu features many traditional Indian classics, along with hybrid dishes as well, showcasing their dynamic kitchen. We sampled the tandoori chicken bao to start, which was presented beautifully and tasted even better. We were fortunate enough to meet the one of the owners on the way out, and it is clear that he is truly passionate about the experience he and the other owners have curated here. This is an establishment that truly cares about the product they put out, and are proud of what they can do. My date and I were truly impressed and will 100% be returning to try more items off the menu. read more

Silk cancelled our confirmed reservation on the same day we were to eat there. Very disappointing and unprofessional.

I can see why the reviews on this restaurant are all over the place: the food is good, but the organization is not professional. I arrived at around 6, alone, to try it out. The restaurant shares an entryway with an apartment rental realty business, which is already a bit weird from the point of view of atmosphere. I almost missed the door to the restaurant because it's in a corner, and there were several delivery boxes of takeout containers waiting to be taken in, almost blocking the doorway. If I had been in a wheelchair, I wouldn't have been able to get through the door. I mentioned this to the front desk staff and the boxes were gone before I left. My plan was to eat at the bar. It turned out that there was a large party hanging out at the bar before sitting down at the large central table, so the only room for me was at the very edge of the bar. However, the bartender was nice and got me a menu, and they did eventually sit down so I got a little more space. My cocktail (pomegranate old-fashioned) was excellent. So was my turmeric tandoori salmon. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio, which was very reasonably priced for Brookline. I was not thrilled by the cardamom chocolate tart: the chocolate was liquid, inside a stale-tasting shell. Overall, it has potential and I'll probably come back. I'll call in advance to ask about large parties, and I'll avoid the chocolate tart unless I'm assured that it's changed. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about The Silk! We came in with a party of 15 to celebrate an engagement and were extremely well taken care of. The staff was all kind, attentive, and accommodating, and the owner came to check in multiple times to make sure all was going well. The staff perfectly handled some serious allergy restrictions from some in our party, and we ate completely worry-free! The food was seriously good, each person initially planned to order for just themselves but we quickly switched to family-style sharing after we realized how good everything was. I sampled no fewer than 10 different dishes that night and I would gladly go back for any of them again. The cauliflower fritter appetizer was one of the best preparation of cauli I've ever had, and I'm not one to hyperbolize. I'll keep the rest of this short for the sake of space: The drinks were top notch (get the Bombay Sunset, thank me later) and the interior is also really quite pretty. While the portions might be modest, the taste is grand and the price is reasonable for that experience. My son and I go to the Silk for special occasions. Love the calming ambience. My son loves the flatbread pizza and curly fries. I usually get a flatbread with lamb. Out of this world! Staff is always courteous. Even the Head Chef comes out to make sure my son and I are enjoying our meal. I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time as they are usually packed (especially on Friday night). With such a diverse menu there's definitely a delicious dish you'll want to try!. read more

Absolutely fantastic. We went to The Silk this evening and it is hard to describe how good and how unique the food and atmosphere are. The Silk represents the history and influence of The Silk Road on world trade and cuisine and it does so wonderfully. It is Indian, but not Indian, although there are Indian dishes. It is an amalgam of different influences and the confluence is amazing. The back of the restaurant is warm and inviting and we immediately felt comfortable as we were seated.d We started with the Deconstructed Samosa Chaat appetizer and it was the best "samosa" I have ever had. It is beautifully plated and the flavors highlight everything I love about a samosa, but each spice comes through individually. Where a traditional samosa is a generally bland, or spicy mixture inside dough, in the deconstructed samosa the tamarind shines throughout with hints of different flavors such as pomegranate and mint. My main course was the Gochujang Braised Short Ribs with kimchi rice. The menu advertises this as a Korean dish (as the name suggests), but the sauce is a unique blend of Korean and Indian spices that complemented the tender short ribs. It is the epitome for me of the chef interpreting a blend of world cultures. The kimchi rice was a fantastic complement as well. It was not just kimchi and rice, but a spicy and rich blend of rice with mixed vegetables. My wife had Tikka Masala with paneer and she said it was fantastic as well. Every dish is a work of art with flowers and herbs arranged to complement the visual appeal. It is rare that just looking at a dish makes me as excited to try as it was here. The other part I love is that the portions were very generous and very reasonably priced. We had two cocktails, a beer, the two mains, an appetizer and garlic naan and the total before tip was under $100! That is practically unheard of these days and very much appreciated. read more

I read some positive reviews and chose The Silk for my birthday dinner- I am sorry to report that it was not a great experience. Not one staff member seemed to know what was going on- it was like the twilight zone! It seemed like everyone working there had never worked in a restaurant before. The host could not find our reservation but sat us in the 1/3 full dining room-we sat for at least 20 minutes before someone came over - we ordered a bottle of champagne, a cocktail and some appetizers- another 15 minutes go by and still no drinks. Bartender finally came over and said they were having issues with the chiller and they were waiting for the bottle to get cold. Apps and one cocktail were served and all was tasty. We told them not to open the bottle of champagne and to just bring the check. When the bill arrived, I showed them the QR code from the gift certificate that my son had bought for me that morning. Waiter had no idea how to process it, asked another to help, who then called over the manager - he was pleasant but couldn't figure it out either. He finally took a photo of the QR code and said he would figure it out later. We tried to make the best of it and got a good laugh because it was all so crazy!
