This was a very cute, outdoorsy café. I was expecting a little more coffee selection but it seems they are mostly a breakfast/bagel style café. The coffee itself was decent. I also ordered a breakfast bagle sandwich that was also okay. It was a bit too dry. There wasn't anything special to me. I think the experience comes from the outdoor seating. More than half of the customers had brought there dogs with them so I assume this is the coffee shop to go to if you want to enjoy it with your fur baby. I think I would go back. I grew up 5 blocks from the shop, attended Grand elementary school. Always found solace from the heat/cold inside with a hot cup of coffee and friendly faces. I'm very disappointed the report that these days are over. Surly 'hipster' staff (lest a few, you know who you are) have turned this place into a pretentious nightmare. If I manage to get the correct coffee, I end up waiting 15 minutes for my bagel. This all after I've waited patiently for the barista to finish his/her leisurely conversation with the person in front of me. On another note, I realize it's always policy to card when someone orders a beer. When I order the same beer three nights in a row, I expect you to remember my face. Really sad to say I'm going to be taking my business elsewhere from now on after being a regular for 10+ years. read more

Exactly 1.5 blocks from my house, this place is geographically perfectly positioned to provide me with all of my food, beer, cupcake and ice cream needs. The tofu thai peanut gravity bowl is delicious. And their breakfast options are perfect for those Saturday mornings when you just don't feel like pouring another bowl of Cheerios. Dogs are welcome (and are often the highlight of each visit). Lots of vegan and vegetarian options as well as great beers, great treats and yummy ice cream. The Shop takes me back to 1991. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" begins playing on the radio in my mind. I become nostalgic. I remember drinking my first espresso in 1991. The new coffee shops springing up were individual small businesses. Each shop had an individual character. Each small business worked hard to master pulling a fine shot of espresso. The espresso always came in small cup with a saucer. Those days are long gone. Corporate coffee shops sprang up everywhere and convenience stores began selling lattes out of machines. It became a difficult and saturated market, and the small coffee shop vanished. Today, if you ask for an espresso, you will get a strange look. You will then be handed a paper cup with your shot in it. The coffee goes cold quickly, and sticks to the cups interior. It's unpleasant. However, don't lose hope. The shop roasts their own coffee on site and serves coffee in real dishes! I bet they will even understand your longing for a simple double shot of espresso. This small coffee shop has character, and good coffee. This is how it should be. read more

A South Perry staple!!! Baked goods here are to die for, particularly the bagels and focaccia bread. I love the turkey sandwich on focaccia, breakfast sandwiches on Asiago bagel, and rotating specials for food and coffee. Simple, tasty food that is just as good visit after visit. Disclaimer: I just came from Seattle. Obviously I'm spoiled. I've lived in rural areas though and am no coffee snob by any means. And I love me some Starbucks--who doesn't? I tried to like the coffee--I really did. I work down the street so it would be exceptional if I could take a quick walk to get some caffeine. Alas, I find the selection of brew a little plain, especially given the high prices. They have small sizes, very standard menu options, and Starbucks prices. I'm just not feeling it. As for the location--it's a super-cute garage-style place. Nice, but small inside and nice patio seating in the cute South Perry District. Maybe I'll try one of the bagels here. I am from a Coffee Shop town and was so surprised to stumble upon this fantastic cafe in an obscure residential neighborhood (but 2 minutes off the highway.) This place is fun and casual. Nice place to come and get on your laptop and do some work or just grab a coffee or drink with a friend! The outside seating is bigger then the inside, which is something I love! There is no table service but going up and ordering was quick and easy. The food was good but nothing to right home about. The South Perry neighborhood got some character when an old gas station was refurbished into a coffee house simply called The Shop. Besides the good coffee and usual baked goods, The Shop has quickly became more than just a neighborhood destination. Occasional parking lot live music and the summer evening movies shown on a adjacent building are making new traditions and extending business beyond the morning commute. Great local cafe. Cool decor whether you are seated inside or out. Sometimes my house just gets too small and I venture out; I love the Shop just for the amount of reading I get done here. I like the Anvil coffee roasters coffee they brew and appreciate that so much of the food is made in-house. The cookies they select and ice cream from Brain Freeze are super. Always an interesting flavor. To top it off there is an always rotating selection of beers and half the time it seems it is happy hour. The girl baking for tomorrow morning was bashing management saying that there has been no "meetings" and how the cleanliness has gone downhill... just what a customer wants to overhear. Great atmosphere - cozy, comfortable, small but not cramped, eclectic In furnishings. I really like the atmosphere here. Most importantly, I have hygiene concerns here. 1. I had violent bowel movements for a couple of hours after I arrived home. I did not eat anything that day except for some Triscuits at lunchtime so I have no reason to think that my physical reaction came from anything other than my meal at The Shop. 2. There was a dog in the restaurant. By law, only if an animal is a registered Service animal are they allowed in restaurants. I did not see the waitstaff ask for verification of the animal's status (which they should always do, IMO). However, the animal did not stay with the owner while in the restaurant- it was all over the place, greeting guests and seeing what snacks it could find on the floor, it was even up on chairs! This is well outside the range of acceptable behavior for service animal. There is no way that animal was a service animal. It would never have behaved in that fashion, and, owners are required to keep their service animal on a leash, among other things! Here, The owner completely ignored the fact that the dog was running all over the restaurant. I can't help but think that maybe this is why I was not well an hour after eating there. Just because an establishment chooses to have a casual and relaxed atmosphere absolutely does not mean that health and safety codes should be 'relaxed' as well. 3. A very dirty individual, by appearances homeless and not particularly sane, sat near me for almost an hour. He did not order anything. He spoke to himself, or to an invisible person, the entire time. Profanity was frequent. While he was not overtly frightening, he made unpredictable and sudden verbal and physical gestures. It was not until a customer spoke to a wait person that he was gently asked to leave. But during the entire time he was there I watched the manager and I know he was completely aware of this person's present. Yet he did nothing to intervene until a customer spoke out. 4. No local wines. So, I love the atmosphere of this establishment and wish that I could make it a regular place. However, it's clear to me that hygiene is not a priority here so I won't be back. read more

My love of The Shop has a lot to do with it's soul, which not only consists of it's internal & external adornments, not the least of which are worn & comfy chairs, but it's little pieces of soul satisfying treats you can take home with you. Today I'd like to talk specifically about the sesame & coconut cookies. Those of you who've caught some of my reviews know my love of all things crunchy and these cookies deliver. They're delicate yet the flavor intensely satisfying with sweet & savory notes. Today I find I can special order these gems and have my own stash. For anyone feeling uprooted and a bit homesick I suggest you get over to The Shop, get some sesame coconut cookies, maybe even special order a dozen for your own personal stash, take them to your place and find the comfiest spot you can and enjoy these wonderful cookies, with a warm drink and enjoy a little daydreaming. read more

I met friends for coffee and a nosh on Saturday at The Shop. The only other times I had been there in the past were to pick up coffee to go, but this day I arrived with the notion that I might have an early lunch. Looking over the menu board, I could see that there were several selections that would work for me as a vegetarian. In fact, not only were there vegetarian choices, but also vegan and gluten-free baked goods! I settled on a "gravity bowl"-- I have not unraveled the mystery of this name, but I was very pleased with my lunch. It was called the Chili Cilantro Lime bowl with a choice of added protein. I chose tofu. My gravity bowl had basmati rice and quinoa covered with a mixture of tofu, shredded cabbage and chopped/diced tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumber and cilantro. The dressing was the perfect combination of savory and mild with just enough heat to keep it interesting. It was also a very generous serving and provided a second lunch the following day. The coffee was goood and hot. The cinnamon roll I had the following morning for breakfast was really cinnamony but a bit too sweet for my taste. The building is an old garage and retains an unfinished, cobbled together look to the furnishings. Eclectic, comes to mind when describing the seating. The decor is casual in a shaggy, well-worn sense. On a busy Saturday morning we walked into a packed room with a line at the counter. And although the staff, to a person, was cheerful and helpful, they needed more counter/wait staff. I like The Shop. I will go there again. read more

I really love the homey, warm vibe of this place. The workers are kind and genuine. I had the Thai peanut gravity bowl with tofu. It. Is. Delicious! Coffee is also good and they have lots of cute event like movie nights, etc. It's nice to have a coffee shop with some healthier eating alternatives besides breakfast sandwiches and sugar covered scones.. Not worth it. Also, the wait staff can be rude and pushy, and I am concerned about the cleanliness of the establishment. There are flies everywhere! This place is really funky. Couches abound. Eclectic decor. A community board pinned to the gils with flyers and business cards. A few people studying, working, and having heart-to-heart conversations. Think of it primarily as a coffee shop but with tons of other muchies (plus dranks, plus hot sandwiches, plus vegetarian options, plus ice cream). It is definitely not a "waiter service" place, so if you are in a rush it's probably not a great option. If you want to hang, The Shop it is! Delicious vegan cupcakes, even for a non-vegan. Bacon & broccoli quiche to rival any I've had in Spokane. Wi-fi of course, and open air if at all possible due to the huge garage doors they open up if weather permits. Again, more of a hippie vibe, so just relax when you come in and take your time. Great option for a mellow day. My main critique is that they were not awesome for rolling around with my big stroller, because it was pretty packed with furniture, so I had some awkward moments getting my food, getting my seat, and leaving without feeling like I was in the way. They do have one highchair for future reference. I wouldn't come here again alone with my kiddo, unless I had some help, but I will definitely come back by myself or with friends for some chill time. They are known around town for hosting free summer movie nights in their parking lot (to benefit charities), as well as Thursday Market in their parking lot (the Perry District's open air market). Used to be a quiet coffee shop, has become a pretentious camp-site for entitled people. Staff threw our change at us and refused to listen to our request not to put milk in our coffee...every time we go in there, they don't pay attention to your order and want to put the milk in the cup regardless of what we say...gross! Very frustrating when the person whose only job is to listen and fulfill your order doesn't bother to do either. Never seems to have fresh coffee ready. If there were another coffee shop on the block, this place would be out of business in 6 months due to staff attitude and cleanliness issues. read more

I'm always a fan of The Shop as it's my regular neighborhood stop. Rustic decor in a reconstructed garage makes for a fun spot to meet a friend or catch up on some work (they have wifi). The delicious coffee from my favorite, Anvil coffee roasters, nice tap beer selection, and amazing, HUGE cinnamon rolls are only one piece of it's appeal. They also are responsible for pulling the neighborhood together on summer Saturday nights for movies projected in the parking lot. Summer time is my favorite time to visit to sit on their patio or take in the sunshine from inside with the garage doors raised, opening the whole place up! read more

This place despite liberals frequenting the place is really great for myself, my wife and 9 year old son who is gluon free. My wife enjoys the deserts and the coffee drinks.
