Every sit down coffee shop needs actual tableware. I know that no one wants to wash cups and saucers, but ceramic cups and saucers do have specific purposes. Mediocre espresso doesn't get better in a paper cup, and in addition it's quite wasteful. Pulling off a plastic solo cup top from a drink where it was never needed is just dumb in my opinion. Couldn't even fulfill a simple order for three people. Drip coffee was weak. Pastry was dry. The person making the coffee was right next to the person taking the order. How does that get messed up? This is my favorite coffee hang out. I hadn't been in awhile so I grabbed a friend and we caught up over coffee on a beautiful fall morning. The coffee is always the best. I had one of their specialty lattes and a gluten free cupcake which was delicious! It hit the spot. They have some fun swag for purchase and the baristas are so friendly. I'm tired of supporting local places and being charged insane prices for mediocre food. A sandwich (which was supposed to be turned into a salad)... basic SMALL white bread, Turkey, a sauce, cheese and a little spinach. Chips were so greasy the napkins provided in the box were too soiled to use. There were more chips that sandwich ingredients in the box, too. I also ordered a black iced tea....tasted like mildew. Met up with coworkers here after a tough shift. It is a nice and quiet area to decompress. They offer food and drinks from pastries like cinnamon roll and quiche to sandwiches and coffee and tea to rotating beers. During our visit, we rewarded ourselves with a humongous cinnamon roll. Covid time review: Have not been able to eat-in for a while but we love The Shop. It's in the Perry district, so it's a nice stop while shopping. There is great local art on the walls. The service is friendly. Their hot drinks and gravity bowls are delicious. They have a great assortment of baked goods including for those with dietary restrictions. In normal times there will be live music on some weekends. Nowadays we get 2 GIANT cinnamon rolls for breakfast to go because hubby has cravings. This is such an awesome place in South Perry district! I have only been here a couple times but I have loved it. The barista's are always friendly, and I never regret anything I order on the menu. I feel like this is the kind of place that you would walk into for a coffee and come out with a date. They are so fun and chill and relaxed, you cant help but feel comfortable. They have great seats on the inside, and offer some nice background noise to a good conversation. They change their hours on the days of the market which is a Thursday, but on every other day they open up pretty early in the morning and close around 9 PM. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and even if you don't stay around, they are located in a great idea that is close to many more shops and restaurants. This is definitely one of the local favorites, and shouldn't be missed. read more

I like the concept, and the atmosphere is promising. Food and drink were ok bordering or "good." Overall my poor rating comes down to cleanliness and speed. Tell me, if we don't finish all if it would it be possible to pack the remainder in a carton or container of some sort? Great. Great. So that's what Braxton will have... and for me... let's see...." Such are the pitfalls of the Perry Neighborhood in the modern age. Please put another staff out there working the line. Just one dedicated staff who only fields questions about allergies, sensitivities, origins, genetic structure of particular grains, trade fairness, ethics, coffee horticulture and so forth. Call them a choice assistant. A coffee coach. A crumb cake consierge. Special Assistant to Especially Needy and Unjustifiably Wealthy Special People (SAENUWSP). I don't care! Just move them along or push them aside into a holding pen with club music and bubbles. Whew. Sorry about that. The other thing is the cleanliness. This place looks like it hasn't had a deep cleaning in half a year. The filth is bad enough, but when the filth is resting on a solid layer of grime you've got problems. The flies were something awful. They had fly strips dangling directly over the dining space studded with dozens of the buggers. Yeesh. Maybe tuck those somewhere more discreet eh? I'm trying to enjoy my $8 worth of coffee and muffin. Still! With all this said I would go back if they let me. Maybe I came at the very tail end of their bi-annual scrub n' scrape? Maybe there was an acute staff shortage to create that ungodly 20 minute wait for hot coffee and a ready-to-go muffin? The patio could be kinda nice in better days. I love this place if just for the affogato alone. I've gotten it twice now and paired with biscotti, it's just fantastic! Their hummus is also pretty good. I really like the vibe and atmosphere, especially on warmer days. There's a stack of board games to play with your friends. I've also come here for movie nights during the summer. My husband and I brought our dogs and it actually wasn't that bad. They're usually a pain in the ass but they settled down after some time. My little one thoroughly enjoyed eating popcorn off the ground. I think the Shop is a great little place to stop by when on South Hill. And seriously, get the espresso affogato. The cons: The building although quirky, is a bit rundown and a little dirty. There was a dog inside while we were there. They were out of a lot of the ingredients to make the menu items, no eggs, no bacon. The only soup was chili. The service was half hearted at best. Normally I don't post about experience because I usually just brush it off. But I had an experience I just didn't appreciate. I was ordering food and the gal at the counter read it back to me and I told her that is indeed what I wanted. I waited 20 minutes for someone to notice I had not gotten my food. A guy comes over after going to every other table with the food and asked me if it was mine. I told him I had ordered something else and he walked away. Another 15 minutes rolls by, still do food. So I politely go to the counter and just mention I had ordered some food and I had not gotten it yet. A girl came up to about 8 minute later and said "it was my understanding you ordered this." The wrong food for the second time. I politely said that I had actually ordered something different and she read my order back to me at the counter when I ordered. She rolled her eyes at me and left. I was waiting for my sister in law and when she got there she wanted to sit in the sun. The girl finally was bringing out the right food, then very abruptly said "do you want it to go now?" Which I just replied "oh no, I'm just moving to a table outside since my sister just got here." She then handed me my food and rolled her eyes at me again and Didn't even apologize for the fact I had waited almost 45 minutes for my food and the basically said I was wrong twice. I wasn't mad that it took long, I get it when people are busy. But a simple sorry you had to wait so long for your food, Instead of multiple eye rolls would have been nice. read more

I've been visiting The Shop for a decade now and I've slowly watched it deteriorate. What used to feel quirky and fun has slowly descended into unkempt and dirty. Their in-house bakery items are pricey, overly sweet, and largely flavorless. Although, I actually won't order food here anymore because the kitchen area and really the entire space is filthy. The building and furnishings are cluttered and worn down. It really breaks my heart to have to update this review, because this coffee shop has been a pillar of the neighborhood for years, but I wish they rolled back a bit and focused on good coffee and some degree of cleanliness. I met friends for coffee and a nosh on Saturday at The Shop. The only other times I had been there in the past were to pick up coffee to go, but this day I arrived with the notion that I might have an early lunch. Looking over the menu board, I could see that there were several selections that would work for me as a vegetarian. In fact, not only were there vegetarian choices, but also vegan and gluten-free baked goods! I settled on a "gravity bowl"-- I have not unraveled the mystery of this name, but I was very pleased with my lunch. It was called the Chili Cilantro Lime bowl with a choice of added protein. I chose tofu. My gravity bowl had basmati rice and quinoa covered with a mixture of tofu, shredded cabbage and chopped/diced tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumber and cilantro. The dressing was the perfect combination of savory and mild with just enough heat to keep it interesting. It was also a very generous serving and provided a second lunch the following day. The coffee was goood and hot. The cinnamon roll I had the following morning for breakfast was really cinnamony but a bit too sweet for my taste. The building is an old garage and retains an unfinished, cobbled together look to the furnishings. Eclectic, comes to mind when describing the seating. The decor is casual in a shaggy, well-worn sense. On a busy Saturday morning we walked into a packed room with a line at the counter. And although the staff, to a person, was cheerful and helpful, they needed more counter/wait staff. I like The Shop. I will go there again. read more

$2 mimosas on the weekend!!! What a steal! When there's nice weather, they open up the garage doors and invite the warmth in. It's really quite splendid. I ordered a 16 oz latte and while the price on the board was a few cents different than the price I paid, it was still a much cheaper drink than larger coffee shops and tasted much better. Lots of seating inside and on the patio and tons of parking around the corner, if not in the lot right out front. During the summers they also host outdoor movies which patrons can vote on up until June 1! read more
