Had such a nice experience at Cedar Coffee during my trip to Spokane. I stopped by for a quick coffee and pastry break, and the pistachio babka completely surprised me in the best way. It smelled amazing the moment i open the box, rich, buttery, and fresh. The layers were soft and fluffy inside with a slightly flaky texture on the outside, and the pistachio filling added just the right amount of sweetness without being overwhelming. You can really tell their bakery items are made fresh. I also ordered an iced Americano, which had a light taste to pair with the pastry. The shop itself has a clean white aesthetic that feels calm and peaceful. Plenty of space to sit down, work, study, or just relax for a bit. Definitely a spot I'd come back to next time I'm in Spokane. read more

I came here for a hot drink and a sweet treat. The interior is bright, clean, and minimalist. I opted for the Chai latte (5?ish) - it spiced wonderfully and you can see the vanilla beans in it. Once in a while you wander into a place that leaves you feeling fortunate to have experienced it. That is the case with this gem, Cedar Coffee. Immediately when walking in you can tell ownership prides themselves in their business. From the very thought out layout, ambience and subtle music in the background, this place just hugged you as you walk in. We were immediately greeted with a smile by the barista. We ordered a Turkish coffee, something we had never tried. This was when the owner appeared from the back room excited to share how to drink a Turkish coffee and explained the differences from standard coffee. You could tell he took pride in his heritage and business. He was very thoughtful and kind to make sure we had an awesome experience. It is quite clean inside and the wallpaper is beautiful; I love the white-and-black aesthetic. It is oddly relaxing inside even though it is right next to a busy street. There's a front room and a back room. The front room has several small tables along the wall with 2-3 chairs at each. There's also a bathroom in the corner that requires a key. The back room can be reserved for a cost and was closed off when I went. The first thing I noticed about their menu on the blackboard was that there were no prices. They have the typical coffees, teas, and a wide variety of milk substitutes. On the counter, there is a paper menu that states each price point. A 12 oz chamomile tea (loose leaf) was $4. Went here on a lazy Monday vacation morning while waiting for a table to open up at Bruncheonette nearby. Ambiance is bright and open, service friendly and attentive. Piano instrumentals of Whitney and Adele playing softly make for a calming atmosphere. Most importantly, the coffee was great! Had a honey lavender iced coffee. Most flavors are made in house, cold brew as well. Didn't get a tea but their menu looks extensive and almost made me give tea a try :) And hey, it seems the shop is Ukrainian owned and ran by refugees from the war, which makes it easy to like. My intended coffee stop was closed and so I wandered into Cedar Coffee instead, and I am so glad I did! I enjoyed it so much I went back the next day. It's location on a busy street makes parking a small challenge. And the Monday I stopped in the one guy (the owner?) was the only one working and it was busy, so it took a little longer than your typical chain. But it is worth having the patience! Cute spot with a surprising amount of space to work for such a small cafe. The drinks were really yummy and inexpensive. Because I didn't feel like I needed to put down a deposit for a custom espresso, I was happy to get a couple beverages plus a snack! I personally was able to find parking right outside of this shop on the street. It was also a Sunday so I didn't have to pay for parking (I hope. Didn't get a ticket anyway). And I spent a good hour and a half working in a comfy armchair in the back while sipping on a mocha and then some tea. There were handfuls of people coming in and out, but for the most part the back room was quiet and it never felt crowded. Server working was friendly and happy to engage in some small conversation before I went back to my laptop and continued typing. On the corner of Monroe and College Ave, this coffee house was surprising bigger than what it appears when you first walk in. There are several tables and a couple of comfy chairs in the back besides the front section. When we were here, the front was entirely full, but we were lucky to score the two comfy chairs in the back. Not exactly sure what's upstairs, as there's a chain across the entrance that says "employees only." The barista seemed super knowledgeable about the coffee, and there were some pastries that looked pretty tempting (even a couple of day old discounted ones). The clientele seemed to be mostly young 20 somethings busy studying (at least in the back section). I would have enjoyed watching the barista ply his trade (have to save that for next time). My only complaint was the parking situation. I'm pretty sure that we parked in a spot that needed a permit, but I'm not exactly sure where we should park. There are a couple of metered parking slots right on College next to the front entrance, but I really hate paying for parking. read more

I was in Giant Nerd books just up the street, and decided to come in with my purchase, and read it with a cup of coffee. Boy, am I glad I did. It's been so hot, I've basically had iced lattes (yes, plural, because I came back the next day). One straight up, one with their homemade honey-lavender syrup. The lattes were great on their own; the syrup definitely added, without being overpowering. As others have said, the whole place has an aesthetic. Very clean, very minimalist. The front and back are distinct areas, though, with the back being more "hygge," as the phrase goes (Danish for "homey" or "comfortable"). My wife would probably snark at the music as being "air pudding," but I like the jazzy nature of it. What others haven't mentioned is that the place has a distinct smell, and I don't mean that in a pejorative way at all. It's some interesting mashup of coffee and potpourri. But, again, not in an overpowering way -- just enough. I give out my stars on how far out of the way I think you should go. Five means nationally; four is within the region; three is within a city; two means down the street; and one star means you're in front of a place's door and can't move. It's difficult to imagine how a coffeehouse could make it to five stars. Could I ever really recommend one to a friend in Boston to come out and make a special trip?
