This was our first visit to The Shipyards and had some positives and some negative. First, our Server was new and when asked what beers were "Seasonal" as listed on the menu and we're told there is an apricot ale and no other beers other than what's on the menu. I had to go to the bar to find out what other beers were available and found many others. Other than not knowing what beers, our server was very pleasant and delivered food quickly. Food was served warm and fresh. Baby back ribs were Excellent and not overcooked or reheated. Almond crusted fish was crunchy and thin, very disappointing for $22. Amazing spot in the river front in Lorain. Coming from a foodie town like Portland Maine (where I'm almost positive they got their name and logo from, Shipyard brewery, I see you). Growing up in Lorain I always hoped for nicer restaurants with more creative menus and ingredients. This place gets top marks in my book. The beer is flavorful, the menu is relatable but trendy, and the service is friendly. Also, for social distancing, the sheer size of the place makes it easy. Every time I go home to visit the family, I'm sure to swing by here for a pint and walleye sandwich or cup of French onion soup. read more

The Shipyards is a really interesting place located in an unexpected location. If you're not familiar with Lorain, the drive to The Shipyards might leave you a little suspicious of where you're headed. Stick with it and wait until you get to this area of Lorain, which is new and built up and quite inviting. Its flanked by new condos, a local boat launch and other marine docks. The Shipyards is a new event center that also houses a wine bar, restaurant and coffee shop. It faces onto the Black River and has views of the accompanying private dock slips housing sailboats. From almost all windows of the building, you can see the riverfront. At Monkey Island Coffee, there's a small bar with stools to sit and work and enjoy the nautical view. I don't think you can see the lake from Monkey Island, but the vibe is still great. I will always root for Lorain, and I love that the Shipyards is revitalizing this area. I really get what The Shipyards is trying to do and I think it's so energizing for the area and waterfront activated (which is lacking painfully across Northeast Ohio already). Post-pandemic, this will be a great place to come and spend several hours. Over time, I hope they can build up and continue to showcase local for this area. It has a huge parking lot and an immense atmosphere appeal working so kindly in its favor! read more

Horrible experience every time I have tried to give this place a chance. They used to have plain and pepperoni pizza on the menu. I ordered pepperoni twice and received a pizza with no toppings at all, except one piece of pepperoni in the center under the cheese. Another time, they were out of what I ordered and forgot to tell me, so I got nothing when everyone else's food came out. Small portions of frozen food, bad service, bad food. So glad Avon Brewing will soon be taking over this location. read more

A great place tucked in along the Black River. Recommended by my nephew, we tried the carrots which were perfectly sliced, fresh and sweet. Served very cold, these orange beauties needed no salt. It would have only interfered with the natural flavors found only in the best carrots found on our planet. Next time, we will turn our attention to the carrot cake. Wow, this hidden gem is tucked next to the river behind the townhomes in Lorain. The building is beautiful on the inside and hold true of the Ship Yards name. Keep in mind there are two distinct options within the shipyards, one is a family friendly option wit great service and food and the other side is a 21 and over section with entertaining mixologists that also serve the same menu. Poke and drinks anyone? I went for brunch after our first performance of a show and their lunch options were AMAZING. They offer seafood, burgers, salads, and more. I ordered a Poke bowl and my goodness ive never been able to find another one in comparison. We went very early in the day and the staff was incredibly nice and attentive and accommodating especially for a group of 15. We had the worst experience at a restaurant ever. Waited over an hour for our food, waited forever for our WATER, STRAWS, KETCHUP. Apparently the restaurant ran out of food, portions were so small that we left hungry. Most of our food was cold despite the fact that we waited so long. Our waitress was kind, but clearly inexperienced. We even had to wait to pay. If we didn't have integrity we would've walked out and I don't think they would've noticed. Spoke to a manager and he said "I wish I would've known". No one offered to comp our meals or drinks...paid full price and it was overpriced as it is. I heard that they had some parties...they were busy. So why are you seating guests if you are out of food? We will not be back. read more

We met with family at The Shipyards for a birthday dinner for my mother in law. We had a large party on a Wednesday and knew happy hour ended at 6 so we made sure we were seated and our order put in. I ordered the walleye sandwich and split it with my wife. I asked for the tartar sauce to be on the side which was done correctly. The walleye was decent and the sandwich was good. The fries were ok but not great as in they were crispy but not hot. I ordered two kids Mac n cheese which was $8 each. The kids had tots which were cold. After receiving the bill, we checked to make sure our drinks were priced correctly as the waitress told us all drafts were $3. My wife got the shipyard ipa and I another ipa. The other guests in our party ordered the same beer and we put our order in about 8 minutes before 6. Our drinks were rung at full price while the rest of our table had the happy hour price. My wife and I were the first to order. Our bill had a ring time of 6:01. When I asked the waitress, she went to the bartender and indicated the issue. The waitress came back and said we'd have to resolve it with the bartender. I spoke with the bartender who indicated that she couldn't do anything because it was rung up after 6. I explained we ordered at the same time as the rest of the table and asked if it could be corrected. She then looked at the bill and said none of our order qualified for happy hour. I explained again that our family members had ordered the same items but received happy hour pricing. She stated again that there was nothing she could do and walked away. She refused to hear anything else from me. We did not split checks until the end of the night. I would understand if we had ordered at 5:58 or 5:59. The waitress left our table at 8 minutes before 6 and the rest of our table got the happy hour price even though we ordered before they did. They refused to hear me over $7 in drink costs. They were extremely rude about it when I asked and lied about what qualifies as happy hour based on our other parties drink orders. I was left standing at the bar rudely after merely asking a question about the bill and being advised there was absolutely nothing they could do. I may only be one customer but I'll never go there again. I was brushed off over $7. I'm not sure who to blame and while my party said to take it out of the tip, I felt that would be a disservice to the waitress so I paid the bill and left 20%. The interior is nice. It's like an old warehouse and has parts of the structure visible for a cool look. I really enjoyed the atmosphere but again, I'll never again spend my money there. The price for the quality of food while debatable was not worth it but I went for family and atmosphere. Spend your money where you're valued as a customer. Stopped in with a party of 5 on a Sunday afternoon. There was about a half hour wait for the patio, but we were able to be seated right away inside. Nice breeze while we had lunch. It was very tasty. Walleye Fish sandwich was huge and perfectly cooked with just the right amount of breading. Potstickers were crispy brown and glazed with sauce, yummm. Tater tots were just right. Chicken tenders were plentiful and delicious. The green salad is a spring mix - my bad for not asking - but fresh and tasty. Wouldn't have minded a few more cucumber slices and tomatoes on it. I understand that many businesses are short staffed right now but the lack of planning evident this evening at the Shipyards was avoidable. The restaurant was packed inside and out and had set up lorain tables outside which sounds like a good idea except they were also hosting a wedding reception upstairs. The wait staff were overburdened as was the kitchen. The table next to us left after waiting two hours for their food and never got it. They finally gave up and left. We had a group of nine and got seated quickly which also sounds good until you realize the situation previously outlined. We also waited quite a while for our food and when it came out it was lukewarm at best. I got the ribeye with asparagus and the basil rice. My medium rare steak was past medium, the asparagus were dessicated and puny and the rice was clumpy. My wife's meal was no better. As I mentioned, this situation could have been avoided. Management should have limited the number of tables open due to the pressure on the kitchen from the wedding, rather than adding extra tables. The experience was bad and saying the food was mediocre is being generous. Several in the group had previously visited and said they had a good experience so perhaps the lesson is, don't visit the Shipyard when they are catering a wedding. read more

My friend had her wedding shower here at the end of April 2021. It was a gorgeous location with a stunning view and a lot of space. They did well to accommodate on short notice as her original venue cancelled a month before. They have COVID guidelines in place and the food was good. Would recommend for a shower venue! read more

This restaurant is just waiting for the northern Ohio weather to warm up so it can come into full bloom! The old building was used to build freighters. Fascinating old photos scroll on some of the TVs. We started with Ferrante (north OH) winery cranberry wine. No Great Lakes Brewery beer on tap so that would be one small improvement recommend. Appetizer loaded tots were double sized with interesting chili toppings. Two of our party had perch dinner which was 5 pieces plus regular sized tots (which had a bit tooo much seasoning salt on them). But both claimed the fish good. I had lobster bisque which was the best I ever had taste wise but could have been a bit warmer. Side salad was very generous. The house lemon vinaigrette was quite nice! Forget to mention complimentary homemade potato chips for table before drinks came- Yummy! With a few tweaks this place is going to rock this summer!
