I have been coming to this restaurant since 2016. If you're looking for hot, yummy diner like fare, this is your place. Portions are big, wait staff is pleasant and nice no matter if it's extremely busy (which it will be on the weekends so expect to wait, Sunday's they are only open until 1pm) or not busy, prices are cheap in comparison to other restaurants that serve breakfast/lunch/dinner. Specials change daily. I highly recommend their Breakfast menu. From the eggs to the (I highly recommend their pancakes) huge pancakes you cannot go wrong. I love their home fries. I went there a week ago with my boyfriend, we sat at the counter. Orders placed in less than 5 minutes. I got the egg/veggie wrap and an order of home fries (I substituted broccoli and ham for the onions). He got The Shanty (3 huge pancakes, scrambled eggs with your choice of meat mixed in he picked sausage and it comes with home fries). We had zero complaints about our food. Was hot and delicious. Having a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the Eastern Atlantic Coast in a RV my wife and I have experienced many meals at various types of restaurants. So I feel I can truly be honest in my review of the service and food that we receive when we decide to eat out. This restaurant is at best mediocre. The server and the food were extremely bland. Both my wife and I only ate about a quarter of the food they served. We took the rest home so our fur babies could eat the grilled chicken. It must have been what we ordered, if not I'm not sure why anyone would return. The price for the meal in this part of the country was a bit pricey, at best it should have been a $5.99 meal at a Cracker Barrel instead of $11.99. read more

Do not go to this restaurant if you expect courteous service. We had a very nice, pleasant waitress but she did not understand what gluten was when we asked what was available for breakfast that was gluten free. She went to ask in the kitchen and then told us the only thing they had was toast. My wife asked if they added anything to the eggs and she didn't know. She offered to get the manager and that's were things went bad. The Manager came to the table with a horrible attitude. Said the waitress doesn't know what's gluten free and of course the eggs are gluten free. We paid for our drinks and left. Went there with a large party.. total of 11. It's not a huge place, and that's a bigger party than normal.. I get that. They asked if everyone was there .. we said yes and they told us 20 mins. After waiting 30 we asked what the status of the table was and were given a very nasty attitude by a girl with dark hair in a ponytail.. really wish I knew her name. She waved her hands in the air saying it would be another 20 mins or so.... meanwhile many other people were seated prior to us. Went here as a group of 6, 5 of us from Pennsylvania and 1 from around the area. I got a special scallops dinner and really enjoyed it. The service and wait were both quite good. We went into the Shack today for a quick lunch. The waitress was very accommodating and wonderful about meeting our needs on a time crunch. The best part though was the food! Despite the rush on our order is came out perfect. This place dishes out the best cornbread I have ever had, and I'm from Texas so I have had a lot of cornbread in my life. Their kids menu is well balanced and a great value. I cannot recommend this place enough. You have got to stop in and try! Didn't have time today but this pies and cakes look divine. The menu restrictions don't allow you to really avoid the homefries, but you should. Like slimy potatoes with chips of onion. Nasty Cheese sauce was another kind of orange. Not even close to natural. Pancakes were rubbery and possibly left out or microwaved before served. The watery fake maple syrup was also an awful highlight. Avoid. We sent almost everything back or didn't finish. I stopped here after a hike at the nearby state park to enjoy some takeout breakfast. The breakfast menu was large with a lot of reasonably priced options. We ended up getting two breakfast sandwiches on English muffins, one with sausage and the other with ham. They were both delicious and had a good amount of meat on them. The staff was friendly and it seemed very safe and clean during this time, everyone had masks and gloves. Overall I'd recommend giving it a try. read more

Went for breakfast on one of my last days in Connecticut...I'm from California...I got something called The Kitchen Sink...it had biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, eggs, and potatoes....the gravy was creamy and seasoned just right....I'm very particular about gravy and I approve whole heartedly! They also provide iced coffee free of charge! We never get tired of eating here! We've never eaten at any of the other Shack restaurants, just the one in Groton on Long Hill Road. The Good Part: Relaxing diner atmosphere, comfortable booths, friendly waitstaff, quick service, average prices, delicious food. What more could you ask for? I love their chicken quesadillas. Hubby usually gets club sandwiches or burgers. We love eating breakfast here, too. We always leave full and happy :D The Bad Part: Because their food is so good The Shack is usually crowded especially on the week-end. Expect the waiting line to be out the door on Saturday mornings. The interior of the shack is sort of a more modern version of Cracker Barrel's. The pies and desserts look amazing but we didn't try any, also the dinner looks pretty good too but we had breakfast since it was early. The 6$ Biscuits and Gravy is a single Biscuit and some Gravy on it. And Honestly the biscuit was so dry that without the gravy smothering it, it would have been inedible. We also ordered the Sink? Or Kitchen Sink? Your unable to change or remove things on it which is ok I guess but it's not very good. The only meat with it is 2 strips of bacon over the top of it. The bottom 60% of it is all potatoes and the upper 30% is a mixture of onions and eggs. We were highly disappointed with stopping there so we won't be back. read more

They have a couple menu items their known for as well called "The Mess" and " The Kitchen Sink". The mess is one of my favorites it could probably feed 3 people and I recommend trying it. Incredible prices for the quantity of food. However I did have some tummy troubles after eating here one or two times and I'm pretty sure it was either from the eggs or potato hash. Others who I have gone with have not had the same result. If you're looking for a diner experience with value food prices then this is definitely a place to visit. First off, it was super duper busy. That's not so bad. What's not so great is the waiting area. If you're not inside, you're stuck between the outside door and the inside door. It's not even ten feet wide. Sense it's super busy, it fills up fast. After about twenty minutes, I finally made it inside. Once I made it inside, the downfalls started. I was greeted with the burnt coffee smell. Nothing makes me hungrier than burnt coffee. I ordered the Kitchen Sink. They make a bigger deal about how big it is and it wasn't even that big. They just put biscuits and gravy on top of the home fries and eggs. The biscuits were smothered in gravy, yet they were as dry as a desert. I don't even know how that's possible. The bacon was almost burnt. Some of the fries were on point then you had super oily fries. The eggs were good and so was the gravy. I'm glad I went, but I can't say I'll be coming back. read more

We came here for breakfast. The menu was very neat and easy to look through. They overcrowd the menu and what they serve like other diners would. I had the Shanty. It was a breakfast meal with three pancakes and eggs mixed with sausage bites and home fries. The home fries was interesting because it was chunks of potatoes cooked with onions. It had a great taste. I don't normally have breakfast this big therefore in my opinion they serve big portions. The wait staffs were super friendly. This place doesn't know how to make poached eggs. Poached eggs are not runny like fried eggs. My grandmother was Slovak and made poached eggs all the time. They were never runny. I absolutely love the Shack. I mean, their ambiance is...lacking, but the food is great! We typically go for breakfast (try the Waffle Mountain, topped with fruit and whipped cream). My parents always get eggs and pancakes. Tuna melts, french fries, you can't go wrong. Last night I had a caesar salad and mozzarella sticks. Sticks could have been more melty, but they were hot and crispy. The salad had a mountain of lettuce and croutons with great caesar dressing. What you can't miss are their locally made desserts. From what I hear, one woman makes them all? Their chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream is TO DIE FOR. Do not skip! The service is good, the ambiance is basic, the prices are fantastic.
