The warm, fresh-baked, generously sized muffins at The Sentinel (almost) make me look forward to my in-office days. Those sweet delights are a small and highly valued reward that I promise to myself to make up for the pain of the commute. The Sentinel's a tiny, easy-to-miss, grab-and-go storefront with fast, friendly and efficient staff. I've only ever had their muffins, but, after the first one, have kept going back for more. Finally managed to catch them while they're open! Came here in the morning, and I must have come too early because the lunch menu wasn't being served yet. Instead got a barbecue beef sandwich with eggs and onions, which turned out to be saucy shredded beef + fried egg + onion on focaccia. Sounds odd but it actually worked quite well, although may be better suited as a lunch meal since it's pretty heavy. The focaccia bread works well with balancing out the saucy beef. They seem to do good business with a steady stream of people grabbing food here. Curious to try one of their muffins next time. read more

What a find! I was looking for a breakfast sandwich and noticed their cool black board before I saw their store's sign. The wood covering most of the infront facing service area also makes it hard to notice this place I got a breakfast sandwich the ham, soft egg, and the pesto really blended flavors well together. Newly returning to the office and no longer familiar with what's in the area to grab lunch--I was recommended that tiny sandwich spot near my office. Literally looks like a little hole in the wall. Look for the House of Shields sign above it. I've walked past this place from across the street and never really noticed it. The was a short wait on my visit, but the line goes fast. If you want to avoid a wait, go early. It was a short and simple sandwich menu that's posted on the wall. I ordered the barbecue beef short rib sandwich with caramelized onions and it was packed with a generous amount of meat and served with pickles on the side. Back when I worked on the Peninsula, places like The Sentinel were the exact reason why I wished I worked downtown. Not because I had heard they were amazing or because there weren't interesting places like this where I worked, but rather, I would hear about popular eateries like this in FiDi and SoMa and I could never check them out since they were only open on weekdays! Thank goodness all of that has changed, though ironically enough, now that I work in FiDi/SoMa, I miss being able to get my fixes of pho so easily. I guess the grass really is always greener... okay my potential against the grain take is that the sandwich is just fine. Ambience wise, LOVE! it's a super cute hole in the wall spot that we went to as I've been going to office in the area. The turn around time is super fast and I love that they have a deal for getting a free sandwich if you buy more than 5! The sandwiches come wrapped and served on focaccia style yeasted bread. I got the Vietnamese pork which was just fine, I think the pork could have been seasoned better. Maybe I got the wrong thing? Perfect for that busy San Fran worker bee that needs to pick up something quick on the way back to the office. I was in town visiting for work and we had an off-site lunch hour to grab some grub. The couple days before, I decided to venture further away from our office and kept arriving back late (not used to that San Fran traffic. We hardly have any in Vegas!). A group of veteran CMs and I decided to walk over to this sandwich joint, grab some grub, and take it back with us to eat at our office's outdoor patio. Excellent choice. I opted for the fried chicken sandwich. I had been craving one like crazy. They also had fresh strawberry lemonade which I received the last pour of, so you know they aren't lying when they say fresh! I pretty much finished the entire lemonade on the way back to the office because it was that good! So fresh, and you could taste some of the chunks of when they grinded the strawberries. Very tasty! The sandwich had a tender piece of fried chicken with some coleslaw between these two delish buns. Holy crap. Probably one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had. Writing this as their coffee cake melts in my mouth. Wow I almost walked past this place without even noticing it. Located across the Palace hotel in SF this tiny spot has some of the best muffins & coffee cakes. I want to come back to try more! Their muffins are HUGE and freshly made. And the chunk of coffee cake they give you is massive. The food is great. Prices are reasonable. There's nowhere to sit it's more of a stand, but I ate as I walked. Staff is super friendly. If you're on the go and looking for something quick but fulfilling, I would definitely recommend! From ordering to waiting for completion, it took roughly 5-7 mins. The shop itself isn't difficult to locate. It's on the corner of a building, next to House of Shields. It is just a window opening to order and pick up, so you aren't able to sit down and dine. They had about 9-10 sandwich options. I decided to go with the lamb and eggplant with chickpea and pesto! [I'm a sucker for anything lamb.] It came with a container of pickles as a side. The flavor... immaculate! The bread was so soft, but still solid considering it's contents... and the fact that I didn't eat it until 25 mins after picking it up. The specific one I got did get a little messy, so prepare yourself with a few napkins. I did wish that I could taste the eggplant more. I mostly tasted the lamb and chickpeas. I have been meaning to try this place for years. Luckily was able to since I had to be in the city for class. It was just down the street of the building where my class was. I got there a little before noon and no line. Score. I reviewed the menu and decided on the lamb & eggplant sandwich. It was made quickly as it was ready for me as I was packing my take away cup of pickles. The roll served was almost a brioche roll. It was fluffy, light, and soft. Hello, it's St. Patty's day in a sammy! What a concept AND it tastes delicious! I'm hardly ever satisfied by a sandwich, but this one surely did it. You also get a half of a pickle and Andes chocolate mint. When I got home, I looked for the canned corned beef in my pantry. I was scanning the components and feeling really disgusted about the fact that I put all that sodium, saturated fats and preservatives in my body growing up. The combination of dressing and cabbage was overwhelming and masked the flavors of the corned beef. It wasn't disgusting. But overall, the sandwich felt dainty and bland. Pure laziness is the only reason I can think of for avoiding Dennis Leary's upscale sammie stand for the past two years. The limited hours haven't helped either since I would need to make a point of trekking to New Montgomery to find it. Then something happened last week. Sushirrito. The line started to form in front of the au courant place a few doors down, and the Sentinel suddenly became so five minutes ago. I was actually at Macworld thinking I would give Sushirrito a try. I saw the line, sneered at the prospect of waiting, and made my way to this corner closet of a shop. Leary is the head chef of Canteen, and he seems to be going the way of Tom Colicchio who branched himself out to the 'wichcraft chain from his Craft flagship restaurant in New York. The key difference is that Leary personally makes the creations to be found here. You can tell. Not sure if he made mine, but the $9 Corned Beef on Flatbread is a standout. Slathered with Russian dressing, covered with melted Swiss and layered with shredded cabbage, the heated sandwich was the right lunch-time portion and satisfying with every bite (see photo). The other sammies, the sweets and the lunch specials have my attention now, so a return visit is inevitable to this former cigar shop. There appears to be about ten sandwiches to choose from on a daily basis from Egg Salad to Veal and Ricotta Meatballs, all between $8-$9. I will gladly bypass the waiting throngs at Sushirrito to get one, so I can spend more of my lunch hour actually eating rather than checking my Blackberry every twenty seconds. This place was hiding right in front of my nose this whole time. I work right across the street and always saw the long lines during lunch hour and never put two and two together: long lines equals good if not great food. Of all the years working at my current job, It never occurred to me to venture across the street until recently due to necessity. I'll just simply state that due an incident after the labor disruptions we experienced several weeks ago, I was hungry after seeing there was no food in our cafeteria. My mind was set and I was going to grab a sandwich at Subway on 2nd Street. Along the way, I got a whiff of the aroma emanating from this place and instantly changed my mind and stopped to look at their menu. They all looked very simple but my mouth was suddenly salivating over the aroma. I decided to have the Corned Beef with Cabbage, Swiss and Russian Dressing. One word: WOW!!! Came on a Thursday afternoon around 12:15 pm - the line was maybe 5 deep, but moved very quickly. The menu is pretty short: 3-5 cold sandwiches, a few hot ones, and a few salads. Not in the mood for a corned beef sandwich or something heavy, I scanned the menu and (without paying too much attention to descriptions) ordered the B.A.L.T. ($9.25). A California spin on the classic BLT, right? So, so wrong. It should be illegal to use or repurpose the "BLT" acronym unless you're building off of the holy trinity of Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato. Sentinel's BALT is a Basil, Avocado, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich on a doughy roll with a heaping spread of cream cheese and a horrifying amount of mayo on it. From the first bite this was a nightmare of a sandwich - I saved half for my bf, who also didn't finish it. If you'd like the rest of it, it's still sitting in our fridge, decomposing into a cream-cheesy, mayo-soaked wad of wilted basil and sadness. One star extra for the free pickle spear, the Andes mint, and what looked like a decent corned beef sandwich ordered by my coworker. A sandwich starts with great bread, and Sentinel has this down. In fact, it was my memory of the sandwich I ate last year that drew me from the line at a highly favored neighboring establishment and made me choose The Sentinel for lunch today. Golden brown, soft, seeded, and slightly sweet and eggy, this roll is the kind of bread I crave. The interior is pillowy soft, while the exterior provides just enough substance to hold in all of the goodness they pack into these sandwiches. The combinations are perfect, and you really can't go wrong with any of them. Not surprisingly I chose the same sandwich as I had last year, despite trying desperately not to do it. The specials were looking mighty fine but the spicy pork with carrot and celery root slaw looked too tasty to pass up again! That sandwich has a gravitational pull all its own, and it could not be avoided. Now an artisan sandwich like this deserves a side that measures up, and while Vickies potato chips are good, I opted for the house Cale chips with raisins, hazelnuts, and cumin. Turns out these are more like kale clusters, packed with all the goodness above. They were good, but not the savory accompaniment I had hoped for, though not a disappointment. The shining star at the end of the meal though are the incredible cookies! They have the perfect texture, have a lot of chew to them, are quite large and are chock full of goodies! Mmmm. So I'm in SF for training the whole week and what does that mean? I get to do the 7x7 Big Eat 2010 Scavenger Hunt (http://www.7x7.com/bigeat2010_scavenger_hunt/) or at least get started. Since I heard that it might rain most of the week, I opted to go to the further food place and I wanted the Scottish Egg on Wednesday or Friday due to Lenten Observances. Well as I was jamming my tunes on my iPod (at the moment it was Muse's Starlight), I arrived at The Sentinel. The line was out the door. I was hoping it wouldn't take too long since I only had 45 minutes left for lunch. I was surprised. I think from when I got there to leaving it was about 5 or less minutes. They had a system down and I guess the corned beef was the popular item so they must have these ready to go. The place is small and is basically a order and go place. No place to sit, but man the service was speedy. The sandwich was $8.75 total. You need at least $10 to pay with card so ensure you bring cash or just go skip a few steps to the Bank of America right next door. The sandwich comes with a pickle and an Andes mint (cute). The smell is intoxicating. I'm still smelling it now since I couldn't finish it all. The corned beef melts in your mouth. The gruyere was all ooey-gooey. It was the perfect lunch for a Monday cold afternoon. The bread was well toasted. Probably one of the best corned beef sandwiches I've had. I will definitely be back for this sandwich. Hot Sandwich - Corned Beef with cabbage, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese - 9.00 This sandwich tastes great. The bread is crunchy, not too hard, and buttery. The corned beef is juicy, savory, and a little sweet. I'm not a fan of cabbage, because it's one of those useless vegetables with nearly no nutritional value. I guess it has a little fiber, but here it adds some crunch and variation to the texture of the sandwich. I honestly do not know what Russian dressing is, but it all meshes together very well. The portions are large. One order of this sandwich contains two of these large squares. By the time I thought to take a picture, I'd already consumed one of them. They also come with Andes mints! The line gets kind of long around noon, but every place worth getting food from is busy around noon. Plus, I think they work pretty fast. Downside: I think you need to spend at least $10 to use credit card. I can't believe I never wrote a review for this place. I went through a phase where I was eating this once or twice a week. The corned beef is popular, but I don't really like that sandwich. I've had the egg salad sandwich and the yellow tail sandwich, but only when THE sandwich to get wasn't available: the salmon! It's made of cold smoked salmon and cooked salmon... GENIUS. A little goes a long way. That between their fresh baked bread and it's a fish party. I usually call it in to avoid the lunch rush. I was so hungry when lunch time for me at 1:30pm came around! It was a late lunch than the usual 12 noon so when I got here, there was no wait to get my order in and my sandwich packed to go quickly. I got their pulled pork sandwich and I am more on the unsatisfied side of the spectrum. It was a good sandwich, but the pulled pork was too dry to my liking. The bread was not toasted or crisp and the light sauce used for additional flavor for the pulled pork was not special or memorable. They provide a quarter of a dill pickle, which helps with the dryness of the pulled pork...I guess. $9 was pretty pricey for a sandwich that was NOT above average and for a normal sized one - the size reminded me and looked like a burger patty. They didn't pack the sandwich with thick layers of pork goodness, which I usually favor! No dining area either! I have to go somewhere else to enjoy my sandwich! How inconvenient. Overall, my 9 bucks could have been spent on a better, more flavorful sandwich! read more

I confess. The sentinel made the best sandwich I've had in a long time. Being from the east coast and even worse being Italian I was finally not disappointed or left with the feeling I just paid $10 for crap. The line out the door moves very quickly along, the girl immediately took my order and I waited street side. I ordered the capicola with fresh mozzarella. The description just didn't do it justice. Fresh romaine lettuce, a peppery pepper spread, melted and crispy Parmesan on the top of the bun. Dear lord was the capicola melt in your mouth peppery good. The mozzarella wasn't some kind of gimmick either, it was the fresh made in a steel bowl that day soft goodness one freaks out over. Needless to say, this was the best sandwich I've had in 2015. read more

I went to The Sentinel on Mon 1/17/11 cuz I had the Holiday MLK JR Day off. I got there late, but the line wasn't long. It's across the street from the Palace Hotel on New Montgomery. I tried Golden West, but think The Sentinel is better! I got the hot corned beef w/ swiss cheese sandwich $8.75 & and chocolate chip cookie with nuts $2.50. Corned beef sandwich wasn't very hot by the time I walked to Cocker Galleria to eat it, they have tables & even a few heat lamps at that small mall. Comes with a small pickle & an Andes mint. Meat was fine, cabbage boring on focaccia bread. Cookie I got was huge & soft, just ok for me. You can charge it if u spend over $10. My total was $11.25. I might try a lunch special next time. No bathrooms for the public I could see, & no seating, just a take-out place. read more
