This doesn't really need to happen early on a Friday morning, but looking through my reviews, it didn't seem fair for Working Girls' Cafe to share a four star rating with some truly excellent restaurants that could be a tweak away from five stars. Ultimately, this salad could be recreated at a half-decent salad bar and is pretty crummy bang for buck. It's a mountain of greens with a passable dressing and it's the exact meal that is too easy to recreate at home to justify the expense. Ratios, flavor and price point all need to be adjusted. read more

Wednesday, 11:30am I wandered off course from Union Square & ended up on busy Kearny Street in the Financial District. Working Girl Cafe on the corner. Ok, so there's 2 working men at the counter, whatever, gender is merely a construct in San Francisco. Nothing fancy here, but it's clean & cheerful. Total fail in ordering. I came in and stated I wanted Avocado Toast. What I got was a #2 Breakfast Melt with bacon, avocado on wheat toast. It was delicious, but will not make it into my now 70 + reviews of avocado toast. The cafe has a steady stream of regulars, probably from the surrounding office buildings & shops. Super friendly & fast service. A lot of grab-'n-go here, but they do have 5 cafe tables & a counter. Nobody lingering over a coffee staring at their laptop. These customers have places to go. Steady stream of cars outside, clanging metal containers in the kitchen. This place will keep your adrenaline running. If you're a tourist, this is a great place to avoid the pricey hotel food. I would return for the friendly greeting & being called awesome. 12.12.2024. Breakfast sandwich with ham. 8.96. Food came out really fast which I appreciated, so a good place to stop by on your way into work. I got the cheese bagel with my breakfast sandwich. I was here on Friday last week with my sisters for a day in SF en route to the SF Museum of Modern Art for the Yayoi Kusama exhibit event. We decided to have a breakfast part 2 here. I can't remember what my younger sister got, but the food here was great. Everything about this place was great, including the service, the workers there, and the food. I really wanted to like this place more, given its popularity (both on Yelp and in-person). But the sandwich competition in town now is pretty strong, so my expectations were higher. Their meatloaf sandwich was decent, but the other two were pretty meh. Italian Sub: Their Italian sub is just two meats, ham and salami. They disclose this on the menu, so it wasn't a surprise. But it just doesn't feel as a exciting as Italian subs from other places (especially in nearby North Beach) which use more types of meat, with a slant towards imported Italian meats. The ham was a bit too thick cut and seemed like Safeway-quality. House Made Meatloaf Sandwich: My favorite sandwich of the ones I tried. The meatloaf was full of meaty flavor with some veggies in the mix too. If I was having meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, this wouldn't be meaty/dense enough for me. But on a sandwich, the somewhat diluted texture works really well. Spicy Thai Chicken Breast Sandwich: The chicken breast was unseasoned and a bit dry. The peanut sauce helped liven it up a bit, but the spice profile was kinda mild. So it tasted mostly like peanut butter with a little coconut milk, but none of the zing of satay. This was not a wimpy sandwich and it kept me full most of the day. It was also a good deal for downtown. A sandwich and coffee for under $10 is a deal! This is a great little "hole in the wall" deli. It's right in the heart of the financial district, very close to the Dragon Gate. They are very quick and efficient. They originally made my sandwich incorrectly and were very quick to correct and so nice about the whole thing. The sandwich was delicious and very filling. They are a really good size and I easily have a second meal. I also got a chai latte that was very nice. It seems they have a lot of regulars and they work to remember them, asking about their day and checking in on them. The only downside is that there is no public restroom on the premises. This review is low because of sanitary/COVID precaution concerns and because chicken is dry: I went to WGC today to grab a salad for lunch. Their salads are large, flavorful, and filling. I definitely prefer these salads to the Mixt across the street, where in the past I was served raw chicken and also the flavors are bland. I ordered the Greek salad with chicken (which is an extra $3). As I was waiting for my salad, the boss/owner (the staff referred to him as such) walked in with his daughter. Neither of them were wearing masks. He proceeded to the *back* where the prep line is and hugged each of the staff workers, wishing them a Happy New Year, all while remaining without a mask. He finally approached the counter and asked the cashier for a mask, and then put it on. I was shocked at his behavior, especially with the omicron surge and SF DPH issuing a mandate for masks to be worn indoors. The fact that the boss doesn't seem to care to keep his face covered makes me concerned about the hygiene of the business, and especially for my salad since it was being prepared as he went by the line prep. Today's chicken was also extremely dry. I definitely regret choosing WGC for lunch today. read more

Their quality hasn't slipped, despite the trials and tribulations of 2020, although I think they close at 3 pm these days. I love this place! I'm so glad they were able to stay open after lockdown last year. The staff is super friendly and always remembers my order (favorite is the chipotle salad). Holy cow! I don't remember the last time I got this excited over a sandwich. I just started working a block away from here, so I was recommended to check this place out. I ordered the blackened red snapper sandwich and it was amazing!! The fish was fresh, the chili-lime salsa had the perfect amount of spice, the spring greens gave a nice crunch, and the bread was toasty. A generous portion, too! This place is everything I've been looking for in a sandwich spot. I feel like these days so many places have gone the way of Ike's. Crazy combos with crazy sauces and all sorts of bells and whistles. Which is fine. But sometimes you just need a solid, well made, simple sandwich. This place is exactly that. I've had 2 sandwiches from them so far and both have been stellar. My first impression of a sandwich spot is always all about the bread. Although what they call sourdough roll might not be a traditional Boudine style sourdough, that is so say it's not glossy and chewy, it's actually more of a rustic mix between sourdough and a French roll. Either way, it's high quality and delicious. Condiments: the mustard was an amazingly delicious Dijon. The produce was some of the freshest tasting I've ever had. Crispy lettuce. Perfectly ripe tomatoes and freshly sliced onions and delicious pickles. As someone who worked 15 years in a sandwich shop, I know what day old onions and tomatoes taste and feel like. But these were sliced fresh. The meat quality was great and they put a good amount on. Not too much, but not skimping. Lastly, the cheese. I love a high quality thick cut cheese and that exactly what I got. Again, I have to appreciate the fact that they're not reinventing the wheel. They are keeping it simple with basic sandwiches. They're just doing it really REALLY well with fresh and high quality ingredients. If you go during weekday lunch hour give yourself a few extra minutes as the line will likely be out the door. This spot is located close to Yelp HQ and I always wandered by not thinking much of it. When a group of coworkers and I were on the hunt for a simple lunch, reviews pointed us here! The menu offers an extensive variety of sandwiches and some salad. I jumped back in forth between what I thought I wanted, "The blackened red snapper, NO, the California Melt, NO, maybe I should get a salad..." In a last minute frenzy, I ended up with the BBQ Chicken Breast sandwich with cheddar, BBQ sauce, lettuce, and tomato, hold the red onion and mayo. Ain't no one need that. The sandwich was filling and delicious. I got a bag of chips on the side because #yolo. I couldn't finish it all, but boy did I try. A few days later, I ended up returning for a breakfast bagel sandwich of smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, capers (again, hold the red onion) on an everything bagel. It had way too much cream cheese on it for my liking but I cleaned it right up. Food is served quickly and packaged up great for taking to the office or wherever you may be headed.
