Average place. A little hyped up. I've been here a dozen times for Happy Hour with coworkers largely due to their location. We all live very close by. Sadly, HH prices didn't make us too happy. I decided to actually go and eat a real meal here. Went here twice for meals, one with a group of 5, and once with a friend. Dont go with groups. Horrible service. The food is good, the service is just NOT. We had to ask the waiter to refill out water 3x. He even rolled his eyes at us when we asked for more bread! 3 stars cuz the food wasn't bad at all. Went there for lunch and both doors did not pull open or did the latch worked. It appeared closed. Upon leaving the parking lot, came across a kitchen worker. He was kind to let us walk through the kitchen. The bartender upon seeing us walking from the kitchen.... let's just say his tone of voice was rude and sarcastic. The waitress had to show us that door was working upon pulling it very very hard. We just left without sitting down. I would recommend because of the poor handling of customer service. We eat here pretty often, but mostly when we could eat outdoors. It's too loud indoors. It's called "The Second Half" on Main, but it's no Second Half. There is very little in my mind that seems to be in common (although I admit I had only gone to the old place a handful of times). The bar is too small for the number of people that want to be there. That said, when we can get there and get a seat they have great wine selections. We usually get the specials. Portions are large enough to share. Desserts are from Mara's. read more

Owners Dennis and Diane Gentile are usually at Second Half on Main, overseeing what is a great restaurant. 5 stars all the way. Their Angus Burger is to die for. French Onion soup is superb. The staff is superb, most of the staff has been there awhile. Great sports bar and bar table area and dining room is not crowded. As you leave check out the sign over the door... I'm huge fan of this place! Whenever my boyfriend & I can't think of a new place to try, this is one of our fall back restaurants. I prefer sitting outdoors because it does feel a little cramped inside. Someone else mentioned the bar area is too small for the amount of people who want to be there and that is completely accurate. In the winter months when there is a wait, people are all crowded around the bar area and practically standing over others who are dining- not the most ideal situation. As mentioned in other reviews, the service can be hit or miss too. The last time we went I told the waitress I was starving and would like some bread. She acknowledged my request and then didn't bring the bread until our entrees were ready. Later when she noticed I hadn't eaten the bread she said "oh, you didn't like the bread?!" No...I just didn't need it once my entree came! On the other hand, I've also had good service there. I can only speak to the deliciousness of two items on their menu since I always order the same thing- the spicy garden salad is soooo good!!!! It's the perfect combination of ingredients topped off with their mouth watering basil vinaigrette. Also, their sweet potato fries are scrumptious! I am, however, biased since I find all fries to be absolutely irresistible so make what you will of my review on their fries...haha. I so want to love this neighborhood bar and restaurant but they consistently under deliver. My second visit in less than a week. Today at least the beer was cold. The medium well burger, more rare in my book. Service always slow, and if the beer is cold I would have had one or two more. Even though the menu is not expansive, everything is usually very good. They have excellent steaks, burgers, salads and crab cakes. In the summer, it's a great spot to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere of Denville. When you want something easy and relatively inexpensive on a night where you just don't feel like cooking, this is the place to go. They don't take reservations, but if you call ahead they'll put you on the waiting list during busy times so you don't have to wait too long. read more

Just went to Second Half with my wife for our Saturday nite date. It was excellent is everyway. The service was prompt, informed, polite and graciuos. Lots of drinks and funky beers at the bar. Several page menu with lots of selections. Basically and American menu with some creative twists. I had the Avocado and Mango salad special with grilled chicken on top. My wife had chicken francese. Both meals came out promptly, were hot and delicious. The food quality was superb. If you want a local bar/restaurant where you feel comfortable no matter how you are dressed, this is the spot. Also, the other guests were as diverse as it gets from old couples to young girls out for the night, to families with kids. Everyone seemed welcome. Try it. You will be back. We will. read more

This is a good, casual spot where you can get a quick drink and warm meal. The food in general is more so on the comfort food side, but it is consistently very good. We always try new things here and are pretty satisfied. I really like their appetizer menu, but burgers, pastas, salads all offer decent choices. An awesome restaurant on West Main in Denville. I had their pear salad which was stuffed(and I mean stuffed) with chicken, fruits, nuts, and cheese. And the mango dressing was one of the most memorable dressings I've ever had. Our server, Courtney, was an absolute doll from beginning to end. She was so polite and hospitable. Update: things improved as the Entrees arrived. Food was hot and tasty. The pace of service and attention to our needs quickly improved. We were told the host never told the wait staff we had been seated and never assigned a server. I don't know how the back works, but our server was sweet and the food was good. 5 of us came here last night for dinner. They didn't have any open tables in the front but they were EXTREMELY accommodating and had set up some bar top tables at the back of the building outside. Sadly, just as we began to order it started to torrential down pour. Due to covid we could not go inside. The entire staff came to our rescue and carried bar tables and chairs to a covered part at the back of the building. Not only were they beyond helpful they also treated everyone a round of drinks due to the unfortunate circumstances. To top it all off, once we received our food it was all TREMENDOUS! They have taken your typical "bar food" and doctored then up as unique delicious dishes. We couldn't have had a better first time dining experience post covid! It took a very long time for our server to come and acknowledge that we were there. It was a very long wait to get a drink and a 40 minute wait to get our burgers. The burgers are terrible. Asked for water which we never got. Had to search myself to find ketchup, forks and napkins. First and last time here. Just moved to town, heard that it was not that great, but decided to try anyway. As a Denville resident, I used to look forward to stopping by here from time to time. Not anymore... My wife and I stopped by yesterday afternoon for a beer and a quick bite. Not so fast... The bartender, an older woman with dark hair, was TOTALLY fixated on some regulars at the end of the bar. She was so involved with them she didn't even notice we came in and sat down. We waited and waited and waited... She still never noticed us while she talked and carried on with her friends, passing us a few times while doing so. This went on for over 10 minutes before we walked out, which she also didn't notice. BTW, the same exact same thing happened to us last month so I thought I'd let everyone know not to waste their time here unless you're a regular perhaps? Also, we noticed the place was dirty and unkempt. The floors by the bar was filthy and the men's bathroom was disgusting. Also, for some reason there was one of those cheap apple-cinnamon scented candles burning behind the bar, perhaps trying to cover up the stench of this dirty restaurant? He sat down, ordered the patty melt and a beer, and struck up a conversation with Leigh, his bartender. She was worrying about North Korea (understandably).
