Grilled cheese with marvelous sweet potato fries
    Warren D.

Date of visit: October 11, 2024 This was a stop on our way up to Minneapolis. We wanted to get past the Madison traffic for dinner but without having to deal with the crazy tourists in the Wisconsin Dells-area. We sought out a recommendation from a friend, and they did not disappoint! Service was a touch slow, but it was a very busy Friday night so I am giving some grace on that here with my review, especially as our server was quite wonderful. However, this is definitely a place that would benefit from the addition of some technology; watching our waitress take our order by hand, then stop at the next table and do the same, and then go enter both means that both orders get to the kitchen at the same time instead of spacing them out. And it just so happened that the table who ordered after us received their dinner first. Not complaining, just pointing out the inefficiency. Our server was super friendly and fun, which helped with the longer wait (I wonder how the Halloween decorating went--she said she was in charge of it), and the food was so good that I forgot all about the wait! My grilled cheese was excellent, though the star of the show was really the sweet potato fries. They. Gave. Me. Life. Try them! Or really try anything at The Rodeside Grill, we were all members of the Clean Plate Club that night!

    Spinach Hot Bacon Spinach Salad

We were on a road trip and needed a lunch place. This one had a good menu and was just off the highway so we gave it a try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a nice places tucked amongst a hotel, gas stations, and fast food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated immediately, got our drinks quickly, and received excellent service throughout our lunch. I chose the hot bacon spinach salad. It was huge! The ingredients were fresh. The dressing was served on the side. It also came with a roll and butter. Lots to eat for lunch. You can get it with protein but I chose veggie. It was great. Husband had the club stacker which was also a substantial amount of food. Sandwich was served on Texas toast. It was good and the side of fries that came with it were great (I stole one or two). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great stop. Easy parking. Clean bathrooms. Great service![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Pulled BBQ Pork Sandwich & Garlic Mashed Potatoes

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Friendly people and lots of seating options.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Menu has too many options. The pulled pork was moist with too much sauce, very messy the garlic mashed potatoes were cold. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Busy bar area with a nice large separate dining area in a sunny room like a 4 season porch area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I stopped here two years ago on a cross-country trip and could not get this place off my mind, so when I happened to be in Wisconsin again, I hunted it down and was not disappointed! Rodeside has some of the best all-American food and I'm glad I don't live in town because I'd be there every day. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambience is comfortable. Even in the middle of the day, the interior is warm and cozy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff is friendly and service is very, very quick. I was impressed before and was impressed again with the speed of service and the smiles on everyone's faces. My cheese curds and RodeSide burger? To die for. The cheese curds were perfectly fried and perfectly gooey. The burger is by far one of the best I've ever had. Char-grilled and dripping juices all over the plate; perfectly cooked onions; generous cheese... and that RodeSide sauce? Amazing. I can't wait to travel through Wisconsin again. Rodeside is a must-visit.

    Fish chicken fries and coleslaw.

Food was very good. Service was a little slow but okay. They took care of what I needed and was craving for the last year. The fish was very good and the chicken was good. Just wish the service was a little faster.

Seated immediately on a Friday PM. Good service. Our gal Britta was working her tail off. Other restaurant staff busy helping, bringing dessert out etc. Nice decor. A bit loud but that's to be expected. Good choices for bar beverages and reasonable prices. We 3 patrons all had Friday fish fry-bluegill. Yum! I enjoyed sautéed veggies and the coleslaw. Wanted more hush puppies! Lots of good menu choices. We tried 2 desserts and they were both great. Would definitely recommend and come back when in the area.

Yum! Server was prompt, polite and efficient. Food was as ordered and crazy quick on Christmas Eve. Great location right off the highway. Restrooms were clean. Would recommend!

I see plenty of cops, firemen, and paramedics going here for their lunches. Quesadillas - I have no idea what cheese they put in them, but you get that, guac, and amazing meat. I always go asada but the quesadilla size is absolutely fair for the price and pairs amazing with both their salsa verde and Rojo. The cooks are always working hard and for the bulk they get, the portions are always over stuffed. Now let's talk about those burritos, ... if you have never had Al Pastor, get Al Pastor. It seasons the already seasoned rice and soaks into the burrito perfectly with out the damn sogginess. They wrap it better than chipotle and that damn thing is so stuffed you honestly say "I only paid this much?!" Pair it with the Salsa rojo with each bite and you'll be hooked. They do come with sour cream, "crema", I always say no crema. It ruins the flavor profile of the Al Pastor. Alright, now the thing you were wanting to know, tacos. Authentic. Cantina. Flat top grilled meat and tortillas (yes they heat them on the flat top as the meat and oil. Tortillas are typical maize but I am a harina Chico myself (that's flour boy for you plebeians, just kidding but it's good to note that if you prefer it tell them "Puedo tener tortillas de harina" because I believe you should make the effort to learn someone's language if you're going to partake in their culture and food. These are hard working and sincere people! You may ask now, "okay dude but what meat should I get?" Honestly, you'll never go wrong with Asada but the Lomo de res (rib eye) is soooo rich and so good! Always tell them to put everything on the taco "con todo" (cilantro and onion) grab a lot of salsa and enjoy. We usually get a side of Pico de Gallo which they can do, as well as some Jarritos. The Pico is for the tacos. Look I can go on and on and on about this place but honestly until you go, you will either say "this guy is smoking crack" or "damn he is 100% right" as a former Los Angelino, again, Sun Prairie should be thanking El Primo from breaking up the monotony of "bar and grill" that Wisconsin as a whole has too much of. It was not fried either; just a soggy freaking mess. Looked like they dipped, but didn't bother to fry it. If you are fulfilling an order for delivery, WHY wouldn't you fry it and use two tortillas? Simple common sense. The street corn was bland. My drink was missing. The churros were good. Will not order from here again.

I chose asada and was satisfied by the tenderness of the meat, the bread was the right choice, the toppings were great and the side of fries were nice and crisp. It also came with a side of green and red salsa, which were both excellent. I also got the elote in a cup which was a good size for the price, and the horchata was well made but I wish it had a bit more cinnamon. They have a great sized menu so there are more options I'll need to come back and try. I've already got my eye on enchiladas de mole (a personal fave that I struggled to find outside the Midwest) and pozole, which I'm sure will be popular when the cold weather hits. Service was great and efficient. I took my order to go but there were a handful of tables available. There is a small parking lot that is shared with a couple other businesses but nearby street parking shouldn't be awful if it comes to it.

El Alegre is located in a small modern strip of shops, with a party center they run next door. The restaurant is medium sized with a nice bar in the corner by the kitchen. The room is sleek and modern with black walls and tables, wood chairs and floors, and a colorful neon strip around the ceiling. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The menu is two sided and manages to have a nice variety without being overstuffed. I ended up ordering the Camarones a la Diabla, as someone who loves spicy shrimp it sounded great. A bit of a wait for the food, but the place was busy with the dining room almost full including a couple of larger tables. The chips and salsa was ok, but nothing special but provided a nice prelude while I waited for the meal. The meal came out nicely presented on a square white plate, which set off the colorful meal. The shrimp were nice sized, plump and well cooked; the sauce was excellent, not overly spicey, but instead complex and delicious with an interesting mix of flavors, it seemed to be similar to a mole instead of just a hot sauce. The refried beans and spanish rice were both good and the guacamole, sour cream and small salad was a nice compliment to the meal. The flour tortillas were very good, freshly griddled and fresh. I was very impressed with El Alegre, the decor is a nice change from most Mexican restaurants. I was very impressed with their version of Camarones a la Diabla, usually it is served with a fairly simple hot sauce, here they created a wonderful and complex sauce that perfectly complimented the shrimp and provided a true treat. If you are in the area and looking for some great Mexican food El Alegre is well worth a visit. If the rest of the menu is anything like my meal it is a great flavorful interpretation of Mexican food.

So we were coming South on I-90 and remembered El Alegre. Being vegetarian, I usually find plenty of options in a Mexican restaurant (and also Chinese and Italian). This menu had a vegetarian section with about six or seven choices, but I looked over the rest of the very large menu and found several versions of Chile Relleño. I've never seen anything but the one stuffed with cheese anywhere else. Well, they had a version stuffed with vegetables! I had to try it. I am so glad I did. It was delicious and a very generous portion served with rice and beans that rose above the standard usually experienced. My wife had a shrimp dish that I sampled and loved. She said the margaritas were also excellent. So, if you find yourself on I-90, you won't regret driving a couple miles off the highway to find El Alegre!
