This was my breakfast stop to start my road trip. It's a little off the beaten path. The place is old and outdated looking. My server was friendly. I ordered a spicy Bloody Mary and the country fried steak breakfast. Service seemed a bit slow. The Bloody Mary was super average. I know my chicken fried steak would be frozen but the eggs would be fresh. The sunny side up egg yokes looked pathetic for some reason. The extra crispy hash browns were perfect. Stopped for a late lunch. When I said I was gluten free,the chipper, young waitress assured me it was no problem! I had the grilled chicken salad, the homemade blue cheese dressing was divine. We were travelling to the Dells and wanted a family diner type of place - no fast food or Dells tourist traps. Took a chance and so happy we did. Great prices, amazing service and excellent food. Bright and clean atmosphere - typical ambiance of a family restaurant. Daughter and I had low cal plate - (beef patty, cottage cheese and fruit). Generous with fruit! Daughter had an omelette that could have fed all 4 of us. My mom had a egg-McMuffin type sandwich and it's better than the McD version. We think the owner severed us. Service was impeccable. Two words... DELICIOUS BREAKFAST! I love the DFR. Nice family style restaurant with ample seating. They have wonderful menu for lunch and dinner but personally, I love the breakfasts, particularly the Skillet Breakfasts! Plus, you can get a big pancake to go with your breakfast selection. Every time I have been, service has been great and the servers are all very friendly. I haven't been in a little bit although I have had GrubHub from them lots recently but now this review makes me want to get back there! I've always had a great time. Pretty standard family restaurant. They get points for offering gluten-free toast. I ordered the Mexican skillet, which came with salsa on the side. The salsa tasted like tomato sauce. Had been here many years ago as it used to be THE spot in the area. That was close to 15 years ago. Now, things are a bit different. It did not have much of a crowd, even at noon on Thursday. The help was very nice and service was excellent. Food was very good....with one ecxeption. I left there thinking that I may have to stop someplace and grab a burger. I was still hungry!! We both had the Cimarron french toast which came with about two eggs and meat. Brother had bacon and it was two or three strips, but my sausage PATTY looked very lonely sitting all alone on the plate! The meals were, I think, $11.95!! I know that things are bad and maybe it was because I was so close to the liberal crotch of Wisconsin, Madison. Could have been just a tad more food for a growing 79 year old!! We were in DeForest for a baseball tournament and stopped in for breakfast. These are the types of little restaurants that I love finding while traveling. First of all, the staff was incredibly nice! Shortly after seating us, they asked if we wouldn't mind moving to another booth because they had a large party coming in. The server must have apologized at least five times for any inconvenience. The food was decent and about what you'd expect for a small, family-type restaurant. There is a large menu of everything from breakfast staples, to burgers and sandwiches for lunch, and dinner standards like chicken and spaghetti. Between the three in our group, we had a breakfast skillet, a kids meal with eggs and pancakes, and a veggie sandwich. Be prepared if you are vegetarian or vegan because your options are limited to none. I can't say what the restaurant's Covid restrictions may have been like because the place was packed and there was not a mask in sight. That being said, things are opening up right now and masks aren't required so I was not really surprised. This place is worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

I went to this restaurant with my daughter for dinner and was unfortunately pretty disappointed. The service was underwhelming and when I asked for a burger on sourdough, I was told no, even though other sandwiches have it (would have paid extra). Instead, I had a decent burger on a dry, crumbly bun. My daughter ended up having Kraft Mac and Cheese for $6.50..not a good deal. Overall, I would like to support local businesses in my community, but it is safe to say we will not be back. read more

We been here twice the first time our waitress was the best it was the blonde headed girl. She was worth a star she was fast and friendly even though the place was packed we barely there for 30 min and our bill was little over $25 for 2 person but food was nothing to brag about I would of done better. Anyways we came there again but this time less crowed and our server took way too longer. Breakfast was not great first of all and when we got our bill we can't believe the charges of side cost. 2 side of bacon is $4.39, fresh OJ $4.85, one piece of ham also $4.39 seriously!! the side coast almost as a meal. Excellent place to stop for a great meal and bloody! I had the corned beef hash breakfast. Never had better! Hash browns perfect, coned beef hash home made, eggs perfect! Bloody served with bacon, pickle and almond stuffed olive. Just the right amount of heat! Come hungry - large portions. We used to alternate several restaurants, but eventually decided that an extensive menu, quick service, reasonable prices, tasty food and especially Angie, the waitress, made us look forward to coming to the Deforest Family Restaurant more than any other place. I never had to ask for a refill on my coffee, someone was always there ready to fill it up as I got low. My only complain is the price of adding sides onto your meals. We went he for breakfast. I ordered a denver omelette with hash browns and sourdough toast. The omelette was light and fluffy with just the right amount of green onions, bell peppers, ham, and especially cheddar cheese. We have been traveling north from Louisiana where they use american cheese and even sometimes velveeta. Nothing against those cheeses but they can't hold a candle to good cheddar cheese. My husband and I are eating a plant based diet with the occasional vegetarian meal, especially while traveling. We both got the Fettuccine Alfredo with salads and ordered cheese curds as an appetizer. For dessert, we each ordered a slice of pie - Pecan and Peanut Butter Fudge - and they were delicious. The food was excellent but...this isn't a restaurant to go to right now. It was crowded. There's no way this restaurant was adhering to the 50% capacity limit. All tables had customers, there was no spacing. They brought us a ketchup bottle instead of packets like they're supposed to.
