Hubbard Ave. Diner is as Americana as you can get. The food is all made daily on site. They're known for all their pies. Thru offer different varieties dept ding in the season. All the food was good and service was nice. They offer meatloaf, burgers and fish fry Fridays typical to diners along with a decent menu. The popover rolls were served warm with butter! We had lunch at this retro diner during a recent trip to Madison and weren't disappointed. My wife enjoyed her turkey and trimmings meal and my fish fry was good. The fish was fried in old oil which kept it from being very good. The fries were pretty nice though. Our server kept our glasses refilled and the food was delivered quickly. The missus does love a good mash and gravy and wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere was busy but not too noisy to enjoy a quiet talk across the table. You can always count on efficient service and delicious comfort food at Hubbard Ave Diner. The diner decor makes it cute and nostalgic. The pies are top notch, but don't sleep on the shakes! We usually are there at breakfast time (which is served all day!), so my go-to is often the scramble of the day. The homemade biscuits are amazing. Today we stopped for lunch, and I tried the white chicken chili. I cannot wait to go back for it! The bowl was a very generous, filling portion...served frito pie style made it even better. I stopped by for dinner on a Friday evening. Luckily I got the last seat. Duo of silk pie was my favorite item here. It had a nice peanut butter layer and a chocolate layer. I also went for a cherry pie milkshake. I think cherry pie and milkshake makes a wierd combination. I should have gone for some other pie, or may be a regular milk shake. We were recently visiting Madison and went to the diner several nights when we were there. The menu has so many options. The Cobb salad was amazing. Our group had various menu items different nights. All of them were well liked. Portions were generous. Pie is amazing there! And carrot cake was delicious. The middle of the restaurant could use some more lighting as it's darker. Can be hard to see your food. The wait staff is amazing and were running around like crazy. They could use some more wait staff! Highly recommend! read more

This is a nice, clean location to meet up for a little breakfast or lunch. The menu has a nice variety of items so you can be sure everyone will be able to have something they like. The old-timey decor is a cool throwback that I really enjoyed. The food is good. Since we were there for breakfast, I dove head-first into the carnivore ("meat lovers") omelette. More of a concern than a complement - there was actually too much meat! I didn't expect that... it was fine, but the meat was overpowering and it no longer felt like an egg dish. Next time, I'll dial it back with a more basic omelette (or just fried eggs or something). Staff were very friendly and took great care of my mom (her 80th) birthday. The kids meals were average. Their huevos rancheros was probably the worst rendition of that dish I've ever eaten. The cold eggs and not yet ripe avocado slices sealed the deal. We went there for dinner on a Tuesday evening and it was packed. We thought the service was excellent, the food terrific and the atmosphere was just like the many diners we have eaten in when we lived on the East Coast. The major difference being, on the East Coast most diners also offer Greek food, but in this diner there is a Mexican influence in some food items. I've been there twice with guests. I'd heard such good things about the food and the hometown feel of the place, but I feel like they're trying too hard with their "punny" t-shirts. The food was okay, but on our second visit, it took a long time even though the place wasn't busy. And we had to send most of the food back because it arrived cold. The server was top notch. We were instantly greeted with classic Midwest conversation. Smiles abound here. We loved the colorful ceramics. The interior design was a delightful mix of old kitschy. We got French Toast and the Breakfast Club. The French toast oooweee, was basically just a deconstructed cinnamon roll. The texture was the exact same. It was very rich, delightly sweet. From the outside-in, Hubbard Diner has a very classic and charming feel. They definitely take pride in their ambiance. Just going in and seeing the wide selection of bakery is a fun experience, the pies are incredible! My sit-down experiences have been decent, the service hasn't always been very friendly or inviting, even when it isn't busy. There are tables, booths and old-fashioned diner stools to sit at. Big menu selection for both breakfast and lunch, along with lovely desserts and fun millshake/malt choices. The prices are on the higher end for diners, but nothing completely unreasonable. You definitely get a decent sized portion for what you're paying for in all of my experiences here so far. They keep the tables, floors and bathrooms clean, which definitely counts for something these days. I think with some friendlier service, this place would be one of my bigger go-to places for breakfast, lunch or just a nice, thick malt or milkshake! Lighting when entering was a little on the darker side, though that is understandable considering this is more of a dive-like environment. Place is quite busy, but found a nice countertop space immediately. Coffee is average, but the nice thing is they provided an additional pot to refill it yourself, which is great since I drink a LOT of it. I got the traditional french toast: three pieces with berries and cream. Food itself arrived at about average time, which is good considering how packed the place looked. I would highly recommend the berries and cream addition. I can tell immediately that the french toast would have tasted rather plain if not. However, the cream binds it all together quite nicely, with a subtle sweetness that isn't overpowering but also adds good moisture and body. The cream seems to be cream cheese based; while I normally detest cream cheese, I was pleasantly surprised with how it didn't seem to overpower the entire dish. The french toast itself was ok, while I can taste the cinnamon and the spices in the egg batter as they described, I wish they could have added just a tad more of the spices. The syrup, as always, is a reliable friend that is vital to the french toast experience. Overall, I'm glad that I came out to Middleton for this place. The omelette was full of meat, cheese, and veggies, and overall was light, fluffy, and delicious. The biscuit was very delicious as well. The most disappointing thing about my meal were the hash browns, which were bland and undercooked. Lastly, let me tell ya about the pies! I ordered the pecan pie and it was one of the best pecan pies that I've ever had. My buddy got the coconut silk and the bite I had of his pie was equally delicious. A very hip and popular place in Middleton for the locals. The food is quite good and I believe it's all homemade. The reason for 3 stars is in part (the actual reason I rarely eat here is following) the fact that this place is adamantly opposed to having the very (I want to add that this is a liberal area, (myself included except not extreme left) which seems could be the reason they don't have the ONE item I would be a regular) southern style staple: Biscuits and gravy. They have biscuits. Probably have gravy. They offer sausage patties on the breakfast menu. So there is logically only one reason they refuse to serve this meal. And I doubt it is because they are concerned for fat people and cholesterol. The second gripe is Fish and Chips. It's only a Friday offering. As a backslider catholic who doesn't care about the Friday fish nonsense, I can instead generally want fish and chips when I see it on a menu unless it outright appears their fish isn't going to be a very good type of fish being cooked. Everyone has fries Whatever, it's not a big deal. My eggs and hash browns tonight were pretty good and the bacon was great. I don't think the hash browns were fresh tasting, very starchy, but the eggs were spot on! My sidekick, Nicole, my favorite daughter (only one) had some very tasty looking pancakes. read more

This bad review is for the floor manager today at 2pm. I just wanted a nice lunch with my son. Our food was good, our waitress was kind and attentive. I was sitting at table 17 and the afternoon sun hit the window glass of a car parked right outside the restaurant- causing very bright blinding sunlight to hit my eyes. I put on my prescription sunglasses and the light was still blindingly bright. The waitress checked on us and I asked if they could lower the blinds for that window, explaining that the sun was hitting me directly in my eyes. She said she had to check with her manager. She came back after a few minutes and told me he had said they couldn't lower it because there were people sitting at that table. No one asked the people sitting there if it was ok to lower the blinds. Every time someone passed in front of that window it caused the light to flash in my eyes. It hurt. I finally had to either crouch in the corner and get low enough that the head of the customer at the next table blocked the light or hold my hand in front of my face to block the light. It ruined the whole meal. As we were getting the check I asked the waitress to get the manager and have him sit there to see how bad it was. She thought I was joking but I told her I was serious. He did and admitted that it was too bright and apologized. I told him all they needed to do was ask the other table if they could lower the blinds but they didn't. He said it was not him but the floor manager who had made that decision. Floor Manager- you failed your customers today. That was really bad customer service that you could have remedied really easily just by asking the other table if it was ok to lower the blinds. They probably wouldn't have cared. It is an hour later; I'm still seeing spots in the area where the sun reflection was hitting my eyes and my eyes hurt. I hope someone higher up has a talk with the floor manager; that was an incredibly rude decision that caused your customer actual pain. Shame on you! Upper management- there needs to be a policy in place about an issue like this. No customers should have to endure blinding light in their eyes when they are trying to eat their meal. read more

Solid place for lunch with a large menu selection. I had the black bean burger as well as the huevos rancheros, and they were both delicious in the most classic way. They also served my food at a very fast speed, which was excellent. We also had the key lime pie and it was pretty good as well. Majority of the items on menu you will be able to find in other diners or breakfast places, and this place prepares them very similarly as those other places.
