People are sleeping on this place. It doesn't have the greatest location in the world, and the building is pretty easy to overlook. But man, they are cooking some primo chow in this place. If the world were fair and people were smart, the lines out the door would be at this place instead of Golden Nest. Nothing against Golden Nest, but the food quality at Country Cafe is better, and there is no wait. There should be a wait here. There is no reason this place shouldn't be hopping every day like Gus's or Golden Nest. Sun Prairie's breakfast game is off the chart, and this place leads the pack. read more

We wanted to go somewhere we haven't been in awhile. We were in the area, we had been there years ago so we figured why not. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We opened the door to packed waiting area and almost second guessed our decision. Quickly the two parties ahead of us were seated and we were next to be seated. ALL of the staff were very polite and friendly. We were initially. Seated at a booth, but it was a bit cramped for our liking , the hostess noticed immediately, and moved us to a table on the other side of the restaurant, which we were quite grateful for. The whole place was VERY busy, the wait staff scooting from table to table with amazing speed! Even though the place was packed, the noise level was quite tolerable for the Sunday breakfast rush! My breakfast, I went for the huevos rancheros. Ever since I had them while on vacation while in Arizona, I've been on a quest to find something that compares to the dish I had in Arizona. My take/ notes on their version: 1) The tortillas were crunchy rather than warm and soft, now hear me out, not that it's a bad thing, it was just a different.... Vehicle than the one I was expecting. 2) The menu did say "spicy" tomato sauce, and being a born and raised midwesterner, they were not kidding. It definitely had a.... Kick. I'm not saying it was on fire, but it definitely gave my mouth a tingle. 3) I was really missing some refried beans with it, maaaaybe that's just what I was expecting, but.... I am giving it a 5 star rating as it hits all the buttons for a breakfast cafe. Easy to find, ample parking, clean interior with plenty of seating. Greeted and seated as we entered. I had the Cinnamon Roll French toast, which has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. It was very good. My companions had the gyros on the specials menu and the pancakes and bacon. Being in a strange town.....Sun Prairie, WI thought I should eat a good breakfast. So I found the Country Cafe. Typical coffee shop with locals gathered at the counter swapping stories about farming and hunting. Got seated and ordered the Early Rise breakfast....2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and 2 bacon strips. Had coffee while waiting and the waitress came by three times to refill before my plate came. Pretty good service I think. Food came and it was just right and tasty! Nice place very clean and well lighted with lots of parking. The waitresses were all wearing Green Bay Packers tshirts....go Packers! Reasonable prices too...out the door for $8.50 not bad! We just discovered this place after the write up in madison.com. Based on the name and former ownership we never would've thought of them for dinner.... And assumed they did not serve alcohol. The pasta was quite good, fish fry decent as well. Service was fantastic and I loved supporting a family run local business. Next time I want to try the pizzas with homemade crust, salad, and lasagna. Not an extensive beer and wine list, but a little something for everyone. Good prices on beer, $3 for a hopalicious. This is definitely a new Country Cafe, and we have been back several times- mostly for breakfast but recently for lunch. The place is clean, and bright, with great service. My favorite side, fried red potatoes...just the right size and eat them with ranch not ketchup...yummm. On this visit, I tried the steak and eggs. Got the 6oz with scrambled eggs and the red potatoes with cheddar cheese and onions. The eggs were, cooked not the custardy goodness but typical of most places. The steak was ordered medium rare and it was almost there, tasted good and the potatoes were delightful. I never had it with cheese and onions so I was guarded at first. My wife and I stopped in on an evening spur of the moment trip to Sun Prairie. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress, wife of the chef, and were seated right away. We ordered the Salmon and Cod dinners which were outstanding, and highly recommended. Yes, we did leave full, and will be coming back to try out more of the menu especially the breakfast offerings. I had the Penne Primavera, and it tasted like something from an upscale Italian restaurant! Coffee was diner coffee, which I like (it has its own appeal). The place was spotlessly clean. New owners. They have remodeled the interior and it is bright and cheerful. However they really errored when they redid the booths. The seats are too high and now the table is a weird level. Plus they put the seats too close to the tables and now only a child or small person can fit. In attempting to add additional seating, the tables are too close. Even the waitresses are having difficulty maneuvering around them. We had to duck twice in order not to be hit by one of their trays. read more

Went into the country cafe today. Food was amazing. I had the country variety. I had eggs, bacon, hash browns, French toast. It was excellent. Best breakfast I have ever had. Sunny side up eyes are hard to perfect, but country cafe did an amazing job. Best sunny side up eggs. The atmosphere was very cozy. I liked the color scheme. The staff was very welcoming. Inexpensive, friendly, tasty diner. I was in town last week, and my friend suggested we meet up at the Country Cafe. I got the cinnamon roll french toast with a side of sausage links and coffee. We spent about three hours talking there (all the way from breakfast to lunch!) but the servers were completely gracious about it. My next-door neighbor, who is 84 and has lived in Sun Prairie all her life, recommended this place for breakfast. It has some very kitschy decor (basic small-town breakfast restaurant style) with lots of gingham and wooden chickens, but I didn't care. Nothing on the menu looked very exciting, and it seemed like everything cost a dollar or two more than I would have expected. But the waitress was extremely nice, the coffee was good, and the food (I got the mushroom and cheese omelet) was great. My omelet had three (3!) kinds of cheese and lots of nice 'shrooms inside. It was terrific and also came with hash browns and my choice of toast/pancakes/muffin. I got the rye toast, as always. This little hometown restaurant provides excellent service along with tasty food in above average serving sizes. We'll usually go after Sunday church for brunch and have never been disappointed with anything we've ever ordered on the breakfast menu. Food is served hot and quickly, even though they're always crowded (a very good sign!), by efficient waitstaff who check on you just enough to not be intrusive or pesky but leave you feeling well looked after. The icing on this cake is the very reasonable pricing, non-smoking environment and almost best of all...no loud music to have to shout over. As a previous reviewer mentioned, it's not 'the most scenic of restaurants' but it's clean and bustling with small town goodness. My daughter and I went to this restaurant just after 6 PM on a Saturday night and that parking lot almost completely empty. That should've tipped me off to turn around and leave. The name is country café but they served only Italian food on the menu. They should definitely change their name because I expected diner/Café food. When I decided on the lasagna I was told they didn't have it and that they didn't have time to make any more. We were the only people in the restaurant. What do you mean you don't have time to make it? The bread was undercooked and my meatballs were like very dense paperweights. The pasta was undercooked. The worst part is the prices for the food was way too expensive for what you actually got in lack of quality! I definitely will not be going here again. I also noticed on another site when I went to see the reviews that whenever they had a bad review they had several good reviews posted at the same time which gets me to believe that they are trying to pad their star ratings. I don't know why someone would come here when you can go to the Olive Garden or to any other good Italian restaurant and get better quality for same or lesser prices. read more

The food is basic diner fare. There's something for everyone and you won't leave hungry. I've eaten l breakfast, lunch, and dinners here for over 20 years with my family and never had a bad meal. If I could give this -100 stars it would be too much. Obviously this place has changed hands again. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet for breakfast and assumed it would have ham and cheese on it. It came and had tiny pieces of black, and I mean BLACK, ham, onions and red and green peppers and only a sprinkling of cheese on the top of the omelet. Nowhere on the menu did it say it would come with anything other than ham and cheese, nor did I want anything other than ham and cheese. When I complained to several people it didn't seem like they cared at all, seemed more like they were pissed that I complained. So the waitress says, I will bring you something else and she brings me a piece of apple pie? WHAT? I said I can't eat that and she says yes you can eat it (looked terrible) and I said No I can't eat it with all the sugar in it, I'm diabetic. I said I would like a discount and don't want any more of your terrible food. I got the discount and we left and I will never ever go back to this place again.
