Stopped in on a Wednesday night which was nice as it wasn't too busy. I was seated right away and had great service. There are so many options for beers so you'll definitely find something you like. Choose from a large selection of non taps or check out the tap list. They also have wine and on Wednesdays bottles are half off. Better yet...you can buy and take with you or have a glass and take with you. The longtable burger is very filling and has a nice melted cheese and cream sauce. Went during trivia night... we were treated like disruptive intruders for wanting to enjoy dinner rather than play trivia. The person running trivia spent the whole night heckling the crowd and being rude to people for conversing and having fun. It did not seem like a fun atmosphere even for the trivia crowd. read more

The food was expensive and horrendous, I'm sorry. Ambiance was great, beer selection seemed good (I'm not a beer person so I can't really judge this but they had tons of options), service was great, so why am I being a jerk with the two stars? I feel this restaurant falls into an increasingly common category of gentrified eateries popping up across Madison that have two paragraphs under each menu option touting the virtues of their food- nueske's bacon, Madison sourdough bread, organic valley this and that. This tells me that they've spent a kings ransom on ingredients, but did anyone actually taste the food? You would hope for $18 a plate the answer to that question would be yes. My friend's banh mi sandwich with Madison sourdough bread (¡Fancy!) had waaaaaay too much bread. So dry. Nothing wrong with the bread itself (madison sour makes fantastic shit) or the filling (yeah probably not authentic Vietnamese but we're ordering from a Wisconsin bar so I'm not gonna shit on it for that). The result? Sahara desert dry. My $18 smoked chicken bowl was astoundingly flavorless. The smoked chicken itself needed some salt but was my favorite portion of the meal. There were probably 3.5 tbs of chicken. The flavor on the chicken was a little...subtle. It really would have kicked ass next to a spicy slaw or vinegary something. My main beef with the meal was the sides. There were black beans that tasted as though someone literally dumped a "lite salt" can out. There was a rice pilaf with no salt or seasoning. Then there was a pile of those expensive microgreens with like two dots of dressing on top. I finished picking through my meal and was like shit I paid $18 for this I guess I'll attempt the microgreens, which took up a quarter of the plate. I put the microgreens in my mouth and it tasted like I was eating the plastic scenery - unseasoned lettuce leaves except the pretty miniature expensive ones. I LOVE a good salad, but for Christ sakes put some dressing on it. I would have traded the $10 in microgreens for a slightly larger portion of chicken. The tomatoes were good I liked those. Last but not least, there was a dusting of (somehow also flavorless???) cheese across the top, maybe cojita? Feta would have at least provided some salt although not exactly Mexican. I tasted one noodle of my friends Mac n cheese and that didn't seem half bad, though cloyingly rich. My husbands turkey sandwich meat was partially warm, partially cold but otherwise he said it was okay. The best foods were our appetizers - the cheese curds were fried perfectly (though lacking salt) and the pretzel was high quality, served hot, and had two tasty sauces. The reason I've gone out of my way to be a complete a**hole about this is because EVERYONE is doing this crap these days and taking up space that other more deserving (and often less gentrified) restaurants could have. For example, we went to village bar near mineral point the other night to catch the brewers game and instantly when you walk in you can tell there's decades of history there. The place is plastered in signed badger memorabilia - one floor to ceiling wooden panel with signatures from the entire football team thanking the owner, mark, for donating to their program. Instantly you can tell village bar is not just in a community, it's a part of its community. The bar was closet sized, there was MAYBE three square feet of cooking space in the back with a flat top. We ordered burgers and fries and two beers for got perfectly fried (and hot!), well seasoned fries and a pretty damn good burger with well cooked onions. I paid $70 for two meals and two beers at longtable, and $26 at village. I was floored at how good the food was at village bar. No Neuske's bacon, no microgreens, just food that tastes good. Aesthetics? Forget about it. Their menu was a laminated placecard with their four food options (three of them burgers) sandwiched between their not so fancy beer specials (miller light special, thursdays). So my point is this- new isn't bad. We are a growing community, and there is space for new. But don't forget about our old classics, even if their menus don't have a fancy canva format or microgreens. We also need young folks like Longtable to teach older institutions how to eat more locally and more environmentally friendly (village served burgers on throwaway styrofoam, and I would be surprised if any of the ingredients were sourced within 80 miles of the city, and with the environmental hellscape we're headed into, this matters). In this tough economy it's more important than ever to think about who you support, and the standard you hold them to. read more

This place is quite the gem! I can't believe it took us over a year to redeem a gift card! We've been missing out. We came for a birthday lunch so they were slow but the server was so attentive and kind. I totally dig the rustic long tables and brick, industrial vibe. The tap list is carefully selected and they have a wall of open fridge to take home craft brews. You can tell they really focus on local ingredients and breweries. I meet some friends here for lunch because we always do the place across the street and down the block so I suggested let's try it out and they were cool about it. The place is a different model because you can be served or you can self serve from the large open cooler or have a tap beverage. They have long communal tables and a patio and we chose the patio. The menu is small and I chose the taco trio on corn with bbq brisket, smoked chicken and beer battered cod. The smoked chicken was dry white meat and not very Smokey at all. The beef brisket was moist/tender but not smokey either. The beer battered cod was my favorite and the winner. My friends liked the brisket the best but they don't really do bbq whereas I'm a bbq junkie and I do bbq all over the country so I feel the bbq was below average, bar food quality. The corn tortillas were absolutely horrible because the were hard and chewy like a fall leaf and you had to fight for each bite like a baked and left over. Tried this place out tonight after a day at the CrossFit Games and it was awesome! We were planning on going to a spot around the corner for noodles but found out it's carry out only. Food was great. Quality was good. Absolutely amazing selection of beer. Atmosphere at this spot was really laid back. It's set in a residential area with commercial spaces on the first floor. Very great vibe sitting on the patio. All in all this wasn't a 5-star situation to me because of the quality of the food and the organization of the place. We showed up and were told 10 minutes and ended up waiting just under 30. We never got water or utensils. Most of our food was easily finger food - would've preferred utensils if they were provided. It feels like one of those spots where you use your server visits strategically to prevent waiting around for quite some time - even though we ended up waiting around anyways with the check at the end. The quality of food is okay overall. The cheese curds here are the best I've had so far. We ordered them with beer cheese. I fully regret not capturing a photo before destroying them. YUM! Everything else was pretty lack luster (charcuterie was overpriced and nachos were generic with dry brisket). I am in search of a good Philly Cheesesteak in the Greater Madison area and it has been a struggle. The Philly Cheesesteak had shaved ribeye, Mushroom Mike peppers, onions and mushrooms, Longtable cheese sauce, and Clasen's sub roll. The cheesesteak was not bad it just wasn't what I was looking for. It was more of an artsy fartsy cheesesteak. I wouldn't order it again but I would definitely try something else. Visited longtable for a quick drink on a weekday night. The venue was lively and the ambiance was very nice and warm. I was instantly greeted by a host and directed to a table. I appreciate how you're able to get craft draft brews at the bar and enjoyed pre-bottled drinks on their refrigerated wall (full of ciders & beer). My daughter and I went there for lunch on a Friday. After waiting 40 minutes for our meal, I approached the counter. As soon as I started talking, the waitress said the kitchen had lost our order ticket. She handed me menus and said I could try and find something else to order and she'd put it in for us to wait again. She had not come to our table to tell us this, but waited for me, the customer, to seek her out. No compensation was offered, no free drink, soda, nothing. When leaving I spoke to the man I thought was the manager and explained the situation in a perfectly normal, non-heated voice, he just looked at me and didn't say one word, merely stared like I was invisible. The waitress did apologize, but that was all, and that wasn't enough. I hear the restaurant has decent food, but I will never go there. I don't patronize places that don't care about its patrons. My daughter did say that she and her husband had difficulty one other time with service, but they wanted to try it again because they thought the food was okay. Apparently I'll never find out. My family and joined at Longtable for dinner and beer. They do not take reservations on the weekends but it wasn't hard to get a spot for 6 people. It is a very casual environment. We were greeted immediately and served ice cold beer. My husband and I had the hazy IPA and it was so delicious. We ordered nachos to share which were so cheesy and full of toppings. My husband ordered the brisket grilled cheese which was to die for. I almost stole his other half of his sandwich. I had the smoked chicken bowl which was okay. Went here for Madison Burger Week to try out the community burger and then also ended up ordering the brisket sandwich. The community burger was very good! The mint yogurt and tomato-chili chutney played nicely with the beef/lamb combo burger, providing a coolness to the sandwich. The bun was also perfect for absorbing all of the juices of the burger and sauces. I also got the coleslaw as my side, which was kind of soggy. The jicama slaw that they used to have was much better. The brisket sandwich was piled high with meat and giardinara. Some pieces of brisket at the top were a little dry, but the pieces on the bottom were juicy and had a nice smoked flavor. Overall the food was pretty good, but it feels like they are pulling back from the originality when they first open. We do miss the jicama slaw and the chickpea sides. I am so glad I stumbled upon this place. It is so unique and fun, just a great place to get a drink and hang out! They have garage door type walls that they open up when it's nice out. However, we were one of the first groups to arrive but last to receive our food (3 appetizers). He took down our orders without writing anything down. We gave our waiter the benefit of the doubt. We had to ask him for an update to which he responded, "you never received your food?". He would've known the answer to that if he had checked in on us for refills. It took over 30 minutes to receive 2 orders of frites and the trout spread. Additionally, I had to walk up and ask for my tap beer that I had also ordered.
