Located inside the Madison Concourse Hotel, this is a great intimate bar with not only good drinks but also some bar bites. I've been here a few times with some new friends I've made during my visit here in Madison. Enjoy!

Ah, The Bar. I really liked you when I first discovered you when invited to a meeting here and was excited to come back. You have so much potential. You need to have more than one person working the entire room, though. The bartender/server was great from the little we interacted with her, but her visits were few and far between because she was running through the bar all night. Literally. Occasionally someone else would run food out for her, but she was waiting on 40 or so people by herself. Bonkers. I ordered a hot toddy - dark rum, vanilla, honey, and mulled spices. My table mates were served long before me - in all it took over 30 minutes to get my drink. At one point the bartender did check back in with me to let me know they might be out of one of the ingredients, but it eventually appeared. It was delicious, so I'm glad for that, but 30-40 minutes to get a pretty simple drink is outrageous. It took about 45 minutes to an hour after arriving for us to be able to put in a food order. We ordered from the woman who was occasionally popping in to order food. She was nice, but didn't know the menu. We were curious what the white sauce was on the chicken wings, and she had no clue, but at least offered to go back to the kitchen to ask (if you're curious - mayo and miso). We ended up passing on that and getting the mini meatballs with romanesco sauce, artichoke and spinach dip, and the assorted Wisconsin cheeses with pickled vegetables and mustards. After we finally put in our order, the food came out in a reasonable amount of time after. The food runner gave us our cheese plate with no explanation of what anything was - I was able to catch the bartender and she was able to tell us what cheeses were on the plate - a blue cheese whose name I forget, a butter kaese, and a five-year cheddar. The pickled vegetables were just one variety - I believe it may have been zucchini? They had a strong, spicy kick that was delicious. The mentioned mustards ended up also being singular - all I can say is there was some sort of sweet element to it. Not my thing. The meatballs were indeed mini, but tasty. The bread served with it was really delicious. I don't know if the five tiny meatballs were worth $9, though - the quality didn't equal out to two dollars a bite. The artichoke and spinach dip came out bubbling hot, and was good - it tasted like it may have had a beer base, but there's no mention of that on the menu. The chunks of artichoke were hearty and there was a good amount of spinach. It was nice because it didn't have an overly cheesy/greasy/heavy feel that many such dips do. I love the colors of The Bar, and the booth-like chairs were really comfy. We had a TV in our area that was set to a good volume on a music channel until the World Series came on. I'll be back to give it another go, possibly before a show at Overture, but I have all my fingers crossed that service will improve. At the rate we went tonight, there's no way we would have made showtime despite arriving at 5:30 if that was our goal.

    Delicious coconut chocolate martini!

This is a trendy little bar inside of the Concourse Hotel. I loved the ambiance and would definitely go back! Their prices are reasonable, I honestly expected it to cost much more than it did. We tried a speciality coconut chocolate martini that was delicious, a Bloody Mary that was on the spicy side, and cheese curds. Everything was great!

I had the prosciutto sandwich and my SO had the pastrami and both had nothing but good things to say as we ate. The prosciutto sandwich had balsamic that had just started to soak into the otherwise crunchy bread, with these big chunks of mozzarella and the freshest tomatoes and greens. Alimentari itself is this awesome little deli/grocer with both bagged pastas AND FRESH PASTA/antipasti available to buy, as well as all sorts of goods, breads, coffees, chocolates, beverages and a whole wine selection. Beware that there is no seating inside but definitely do not let this dissuade you from visiting.

I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and the gentleman taking my order pointed to a random piece of focaccia on display on the counter and asked if I'd like my sandwich on that. I don't know what kind of bread if normally comes on, but I have since read about the thicker/crustier bread on some reviews. Gosh am I glad he offered the focaccia. The bread made this sandwich, it was sooo good. It was light and fluffy despite being substantial in size, and had this delightful little crunch from the sea salt on it (not in a salty sense, just in a wonderful texture sense). There was a ton of turkey on it and it was a yummy smoked flavor. The other fixings were standard but complimented the sandwich very well. The sandwich was tasty and filling. All this said, because I paid $16 for my sandwich, I wouldn't make it a regular occurrence, maybe a special treat. But if it's on regular bread, particularly a harder crust bread, I think I'd skip it entirely. You do get a lot of sandwich for your money, but I just can't justify it. So, overall, this is definitely worth trying and deciding for yourself - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The turkey was a hot sandwich while the classic was a cold. The location itself is small, feels like a hole in the wall bar with great cozy vibes. We were lucky enough to bike over on a nice day and so we sat in the outdoor space which is also small but got the job done before we were back on our bikes with happy bellies. We will definitely be revisiting so we can try more of the menu!

But if you were open to just having a nice casual dinner in a retro easy place, this is it. My fiance and I went to meet up with some friends from out of town and from a list of places I wanted to try, they chose this one. Between the two of us, we spent about $60 for this meal, which I suppose now adays is on par with what you can get away with. We also left with half a sandwich because honestly, these guys are huge! -Hot Beef Sando with Cheese (extra): this was a massive sandwich, packed with flavor. The ah jus was on the side and needed for dunking. It hit the spot, was a messy affair, but was very good. The meat wasn't melt in your mouth, it was actually quite dry, but the mix of everything together and the dip made it good overall. - Chili Cup: well spiced, super small cup and charging a dollar for each addition of onion, cheese, and sour cream is murder. Pass on the fixings, the soup doesn't need it, but it's not something i'd get again as it wasn't knock out of the park good. -Homemade Orange Soda: this was great. I love the nostalgia of using Tang and it was more earthy because they put some spices in it. Overall, would get again. -Coleslaw was asian inspired and made well, especially with the mint on top. Be warned though, its the same slaw on the pulled chicken...which speaking of: -Pulled chicken sandwich: It's their meat americanized fusion version of a banh mi. I know they have a vegan one on their menu, but this one felt less like a sandwich. The spices weren't quite asian tho and was interesting with the slaw. I wouldn't say it was my favorite but I did eat a whole half. Happy nomming!

The sandwich had a good variety of textures throughout - my only wish was that the focaccia was also toasted. I think that would complement the sandwich textures even more. The coveted chocolate chip is *that* good. Thin, crispy edges, chewy center with flat chocolate wafer chips. The salt on top was a wonderful contrast to the sweet chocolate. You also can't beat the price of $2.25 for a good cookie. My only other complaint would be the limited seating. The workers here also try to provide table service and bring your sandwich out to you if you do dine-in. However, there isn't a system for them to find you at the table easily and they are just wandering around looking for you by name. Having a little table # placard would benefit the staff here.

Slight crunch on the rim and then soft on the inside. - Molasses Cookie. The same as chocolate chip, but even better with a thick chewy center that I didn't want to end. Kouign Amman - Not as good as what we had in Paris, but a solid entry! Unfortunately, breakfast was not their strong suit. My Croque Madame was dry, and the bread was just too thick to enjoy as a sandwich, I had to open it up to be able to eat it. Would definitely come back for the treats, just not breakfast!
