They offer excellent sandwiches with a menu that updates regularly! Last time I stopped in I enjoyed a prime rib sandwich with a bag of chips! On top of their great food, they have competitive prices and an appealing assortment of deli and Italian cooking ingredients! The vibe of Alimentari is as charming as the food is tasty. The service is also top notch, and employees are happy to answer questions, cut your sandwich in half, or anything else you need to ensure a great experience! While popping between nearby Colectivo and the adjacent park, we popped into Alimentari out of curiosity, and somehow left with a pre-made frozen dinner for the evening and a Spicy Soppressata sammy to enjoy alongside the lake mere feet away! While they seem to be known for their sandwiches, and for good reason, they have a lot of great artisanal items rooted in Italian cooking. This includes oils, wines, sauces, spices, treats and more. The "more" also includes fresh-made pasta, hand cut meats and cheeses, gelato and a few other absolutely delish items! Back to that sandwich...we were not hungry, but could not pass up a good sandwich, especially one freshly made on locally sourced and baked bread! The bread was the absolutely star of each bite, I mean...sheesh! The sandwich in full was great, and definitely worth the stop in on its own. The store itself is small, but mighty, and well laid out, stocked with all the goods, flows well, clean and in great condition. Service was stellar as well. Holy smokes... I am going to have dreams about this sandwich. It is definitely top 3 sandwiches of my life and maybe the best ever. I had the prosciutto sandwich and my SO had the pastrami and both had nothing but good things to say as we ate. The prosciutto sandwich had balsamic that had just started to soak into the otherwise crunchy bread, with these big chunks of mozzarella and the freshest tomatoes and greens. Alimentari itself is this awesome little deli/grocer with both bagged pastas AND FRESH PASTA/antipasti available to buy, as well as all sorts of goods, breads, coffees, chocolates, beverages and a whole wine selection. The sandwich is just good. I had the mortadella. The ultimate Italian deli meat meets a really good provolone and pickled egg plant. It's a cinematic masterpiece in the form of a sandwich. My only complaint - the bread. I'm sorry. Don't come at me. It's Madison Sourdough. I know a lot of people like their bread. I don't. I wish this was served on a traditional Italian sesame semolina roll. The store itself is very well organized. Clean, bright. Unfortunately it's the same Italian products available anywhere. Visited Alimentari for their sandwiches for the first time last Saturday. Went during brunch time and there wasn't too long of a wait. The venue is really cool, there's a wine section, a food section filled with various produce and a fully stocked fridge & freezer full of house-made goods. I ordered the soppressata sandwich. It was fantastic. The bread was crunch & chewy, the ingredients were fresh, and the sandwich was around $13. Stopped in for lunch and also picked up a few items for future meals--pizza sauce, noodles, and their housemade giardiniera. I tried the roast beef sandwich and really enjoyed it, especially with their horseradish sauce. It had great flavor and wasn't overly spicy, though I wouldn't have minded a bit more heat. The bread was a bit tough, which made the sandwich slightly harder to eat, but overall the flavor was excellent. This had been recommended to me and it was right next to an appointment I had. So I finally stopped in and overall had a wonderful experience - both ordering and eating. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and the gentleman taking my order pointed to a random piece of focaccia on display on the counter and asked if I'd like my sandwich on that. I don't know what kind of bread if normally comes on, but I have since read about the thicker/crustier bread on some reviews. Gosh am I glad he offered the focaccia. The bread made this sandwich, it was sooo good. It was light and fluffy despite being substantial in size, and had this delightful little crunch from the sea salt on it (not in a salty sense, just in a wonderful texture sense). There was a ton of turkey on it and it was a yummy smoked flavor. The other fixings were standard but complimented the sandwich very well. The sandwich was tasty and filling. All this said, because I paid $16 for my sandwich, I wouldn't make it a regular occurrence, maybe a special treat. But if it's on regular bread, particularly a harder crust bread, I think I'd skip it entirely. You do get a lot of sandwich for your money, but I just can't justify it. So, overall, this is definitely worth trying and deciding for yourself - I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

I went here based on the comments in Madison Foodies FB. Glad I did. That spicy sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. Great bread, shaved meat, fresh toppings. I would put it in the same league as The De Niro at Ray Jays in Eau Claire. I also go a cannoli and I'm eating it right now. The cookie is crisp and light . The filling is spot on. Not too sweet. My only thing is it has chocolate chips on the ends, and I get it, it's for the kids! But it's not traditional , but certainly one of the best cannoli I've had in the mid west. Although their porchetta was different from what I remember eating in Rome, it was still very delicious. I enjoyed the marinated green apple slices in the sandwich. Such a cool Italian inspired spot off of Monroe. We wanted to try out their sandwiches and were not disappointed. The pork porchetta was unreal. I highly recommend it to anyone who's obsessed with goat cheese like myself. We also ordered the pastrami and Swiss but realized after we got home they forgot to add the cheese. I will say, although the bread was delicious, it was a bit thick for my personal sandwich preferences. We showed up at peak lunch hours on a Saturday, so granted it was packed. However, there is so many packaged Italian items to browse through inside and even a dedicated wine and liquor corner. It took about 5-10 minutes (granted, I think I beat the lunch rush because whole flock of people walked in after). The meatball sub: omg there were at least 5 very large meatballs. Every time I had a bite, a meatball was falling out of the sub - this is just to highlight that they ARE NOT skimping. This is a sub I'd get if I'm eating it right away. So hearty, flavorful. Would totally split this again with someone. I was so stuffed halfway eating this. Porchetta: the apples add a nice sweet addition. If you're looking for something savory with a hint of sweetness. I loved the bread. Would come back for the trout or basically any other sub! Cannoli: crispy outside, my favorite comment about a dessert: it wasn't too sweet (*this is a good sign*). And it was really hot. If you dont like spicy food may be its not for you. They had 4 flavors of home made gelato, from which I took 3 - spumoni, pistachio and caramel pie. It was really good. While it is still top 3 in Madison, I'm dropping my rating a star for their pastrami sandwich. The sliced meat is way too fatty to be served cold. The most fresh and delicious sandwiches! I stopped in during a weekday to grab a sandwich for lunch. It was order at the counter, grab and go style. The location is great being right off Willy Street. It's close to everything and has a parking lot. After I placed my order at the counter it only took about 5 minutes for them to make my sandwich. I got the prosciutto sandwich. It was so very good! It was big so I could have split it with someone. The bread, mozzarella, tomatoes, and arugula were so fresh. It had a little bit too much meat for me but overall a great sandwich. The balsamic and oil dressing added good flavor. Not only is it a great place to grab a sandwich but it's a mini Italian grocery store. The space is well organized and clean. It was fun looking at all of their cheese, meats, wine, etc. It was hard for me to not get a pint of gelato! The homemade pasta looked incredible as well. This store was so cute, I really loved all the products you can get here! My partner is a regular here to get their sandwiches, and all the staff I've met are so friendly. Along with our sandwiches, I also got a balsamic vinegar and a fennel pollen/lavender goat cheese, which were both lovely on a salad I had this week. - banh mi (6.5/10): twas a good sandwich, the proportions are pretty huge, all the ingredients tasted really fresh and I enjoyed all the pickled veg. The only thing I disliked was that the pork was very salty which made it difficult to eat the whole thing-- however, important to note that my partner recommended this sandwich to me and said that it wasn't this salty when he got it so it's possible the saltiness was just a fluke that day! This is the best sandwich I've ever had- no joke! I got the Prosciutto and my husband got the Smoked Turkey. Both were excellent! The bread can make or break a sandwich, and these sandwiches are served on a beautiful crusty Italian bread. Super fresh and HUGE- either come hungry or plan on bringing half your sandwich home. In addition to the excellent sandwiches, they also sell a variety of specialty groceries. We picked up a couple bags of dried pasta to try. I wish they had something like this in Milwaukee!
