While popping between nearby Colectivo and the adjacent park, we popped into Alimentari out of curiosity, and somehow left with a pre-made frozen dinner for the evening and a Spicy Soppressata sammy to enjoy alongside the lake mere feet away! While they seem to be known for their sandwiches, and for good reason, they have a lot of great artisanal items rooted in Italian cooking. This includes oils, wines, sauces, spices, treats and more. The "more" also includes fresh-made pasta, hand cut meats and cheeses, gelato and a few other absolutely delish items! Back to that sandwich...we were not hungry, but could not pass up a good sandwich, especially one freshly made on locally sourced and baked bread! The bread was the absolutely star of each bite, I mean...sheesh! The sandwich in full was great, and definitely worth the stop in on its own. The store itself is small, but mighty, and well laid out, stocked with all the goods, flows well, clean and in great condition. Service was stellar as well. We were greeted upon entry, checked on while browsing and chatted up while being rang out. Holy smokes... I am going to have dreams about this sandwich. It is definitely top 3 sandwiches of my life and maybe the best ever. I had the prosciutto sandwich and my SO had the pastrami and both had nothing but good things to say as we ate. The prosciutto sandwich had balsamic that had just started to soak into the otherwise crunchy bread, with these big chunks of mozzarella and the freshest tomatoes and greens. Alimentari itself is this awesome little deli/grocer with both bagged pastas AND FRESH PASTA/antipasti available to buy, as well as all sorts of goods, breads, coffees, chocolates, beverages and a whole wine selection. This had been recommended to me and it was right next to an appointment I had. So I finally stopped in and overall had a wonderful experience - both ordering and eating. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and the gentleman taking my order pointed to a random piece of focaccia on display on the counter and asked if I'd like my sandwich on that. I don't know what kind of bread if normally comes on, but I have since read about the thicker/crustier bread on some reviews. Gosh am I glad he offered the focaccia. The bread made this sandwich, it was sooo good. It was light and fluffy despite being substantial in size, and had this delightful little crunch from the sea salt on it (not in a salty sense, just in a wonderful texture sense). There was a ton of turkey on it and it was a yummy smoked flavor. The other fixings were standard but complimented the sandwich very well. The sandwich was tasty and filling. All this said, because I paid $16 for my sandwich, I wouldn't make it a regular occurrence, maybe a special treat. But if it's on regular bread, particularly a harder crust bread, I think I'd skip it entirely. You do get a lot of sandwich for your money, but I just can't justify it. So, overall, this is definitely worth trying and deciding for yourself - I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

Visited Alimentari for their sandwiches for the first time last Saturday. Went during brunch time and there wasn't too long of a wait. The venue is really cool, there's a wine section, a food section filled with various produce and a fully stocked fridge & freezer full of house-made goods. I ordered the soppressata sandwich. It was fantastic. The bread was crunch & chewy, the ingredients were fresh, and the sandwich was around $13. I went here based on the comments in Madison Foodies FB. Glad I did. That spicy sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. Great bread, shaved meat, fresh toppings. I would put it in the same league as The De Niro at Ray Jays in Eau Claire. I also go a cannoli and I'm eating it right now. The cookie is crisp and light . The filling is spot on. Not too sweet. My only thing is it has chocolate chips on the ends, and I get it, it's for the kids! But it's not traditional , but certainly one of the best cannoli I've had in the mid west. My family and I stopped in Madison on our way to the the Dells this past spring break. So glad my 9 yr old dtr and I didnt cave into our gluttonous senses and eat the golden fried chicken screaming our names at the gas station prior to arriving at Alimemtari. The person behind the counter kindly gave us their recommendations before we settled on the porchetta, meatball, and ham and cheese sandwiches. We also ordered their soup of the day which was flavorful and perfect for dipping the italian sourdough bits leftover from our sandwiches. Although their porchetta was different from what I remember eating in Rome, it was still very delicious. I enjoyed the marinated green apple slices in the sandwich. Lots of meat in all three of the sandwiches. The meatballs were tender and my husband's favorite out if the three. Friendly people and great food. They were pretty fast, even with a lot of people there, but I wouldn't recommend stopping here if you're in a rush. The white wine spritzer was SO GOOD! And the sandwich was unreal. Such a cool Italian inspired spot off of Monroe. We wanted to try out their sandwiches and were not disappointed. The pork porchetta was unreal. I highly recommend it to anyone who's obsessed with goat cheese like myself. We also ordered the pastrami and Swiss but realized after we got home they forgot to add the cheese. I will say, although the bread was delicious, it was a bit thick for my personal sandwich preferences. We showed up at peak lunch hours on a Saturday, so granted it was packed. However, there is so many packaged Italian items to browse through inside and even a dedicated wine and liquor corner. It smells so delicious when you walk in. There's a variety of jams, pastas, meats, and frozen items. I ordered the meatball sub and the porchetta. It took about 5-10 minutes (granted, I think I beat the lunch rush because whole flock of people walked in after). The meatball sub: omg there were at least 5 very large meatballs. Every time I had a bite, a meatball was falling out of the sub - this is just to highlight that they ARE NOT skimping. This is a sub I'd get if I'm eating it right away. So hearty, flavorful. Would totally split this again with someone. I was so stuffed halfway eating this. Porchetta: the apples add a nice sweet addition. If you're looking for something savory with a hint of sweetness. I loved the bread. Would come back for the trout or basically any other sub! Cannoli: crispy outside, my favorite comment about a dessert: it wasn't too sweet (*this is a good sign*). This is a small fancy shop with a lot of great products. I came to get a sandwich for lunch. I got a beef roast sandwich and it was excellent. It had a wasabi kind of a spicy kick to it. And it was really hot. If you dont like spicy food may be its not for you. They had 4 flavors of home made gelato, from which I took 3 - spumoni, pistachio and caramel pie. It was really good. I also took a Barons gelato (lavander london fog flavor). That was a good try as well. Saw Mayana chocolate for the first time, so got a mayan spice bar flavor chocolate. Loved it. The most fresh and delicious sandwiches! I stopped in during a weekday to grab a sandwich for lunch. It was order at the counter, grab and go style. The location is great being right off Willy Street. It's close to everything and has a parking lot. After I placed my order at the counter it only took about 5 minutes for them to make my sandwich. I got the prosciutto sandwich. It was so very good! It was big so I could have split it with someone. The bread, mozzarella, tomatoes, and arugula were so fresh. It had a little bit too much meat for me but overall a great sandwich. The balsamic and oil dressing added good flavor. Not only is it a great place to grab a sandwich but it's a mini Italian grocery store. The space is well organized and clean. It was fun looking at all of their cheese, meats, wine, etc. It was hard for me to not get a pint of gelato! The homemade pasta looked incredible as well. This store was so cute, I really loved all the products you can get here! My partner is a regular here to get their sandwiches, and all the staff I've met are so friendly. Along with our sandwiches, I also got a balsamic vinegar and a fennel pollen/lavender goat cheese, which were both lovely on a salad I had this week. - banh mi (6.5/10): twas a good sandwich, the proportions are pretty huge, all the ingredients tasted really fresh and I enjoyed all the pickled veg. The only thing I disliked was that the pork was very salty which made it difficult to eat the whole thing-- however, important to note that my partner recommended this sandwich to me and said that it wasn't this salty when he got it so it's possible the saltiness was just a fluke that day! The bread can make or break a sandwich, and these sandwiches are served on a beautiful crusty Italian bread. Super fresh and HUGE- either come hungry or plan on bringing half your sandwich home. In addition to the excellent sandwiches, they also sell a variety of specialty groceries. We picked up a couple bags of dried pasta to try. I wish they had something like this in Milwaukee! The bread was perfect - I hate crusty bread and this bread managed to walk the fine line of fluffy + not too crusty but still substantial enough to hold the mozzarella, tomato and arugula. It will last me a couple meals, so I'm hoping it stays fresh. I also got some of their house Calibrian potato chips which are pretty spicy and so tasty.
