Gino's Italian Deli - Meatball sub

There is very little that makes me happier than a perfectly constructed sandwich. I was downright…read moregiddy eating this pastrami sandwich (which was beautiful, too, and sadly I did not snap a picture because I was too excited to eat it! It did not disappoint). Love this no-frills deli with the focus on what's important- amazing bread in perfectly balanced sandwich (and yes, for me that means not a TON of meat but it was satisfying and not meat-heavy. I thought the ratio of bread/cheese/meat was just right). Gino's also has a lot of pasta salad options (I've heard good things about both the Cajun chicken pasta salad and the pesto chicken salad but literally just made two pasta salads for this weekend so I'll have to try those next time). They also have ingredients for pizza in the fridge and pre-made lasagnas, pizzas, and desserts (Tiramisu!!!). It also sounds like they sometimes sell cannoli fresh, made-to-order. Great hidden gem, definitely check it out. I will say, I also got the Italian sub and I was less impressed with the meat/bread/cheese ratio (not enough meat, too much cheese) but that pestrami was chef's kiss. Also we saw a worker on break when we arrived and he was eating the meatball sub-looked incredible but we didn't try it this time (we were eating on the go and that can be tricky with meatballs!)

A true Italian deli. They have amazing sandwiches. My favorite is the veggie. Delicious bread,…read morefresh ingredients and very flavorful. It's an easy order at the counter set up. Besides sandwiches they have many salads and other Italian deli style dishes you can get (huge display window). They also have take and bake lasagna that looks good. Everything is order to-go but they do have some indoor and outdoor seating. In addition to the ordering counter, it's a mini Italian grocery store. I love getting ingredients for homemade pizza here. They have the best sauce and thin ready made crusts. I typically buy a few packs to keep in my freezer. The prices are very reasonable as well. The staff is friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!

Gotham bagels is THEEE spot to get a bagel in Madison. No where else compares…read more On a weekend, be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes as they have a large influx of customers. I would also recommend taking it to go on a weekend because it's hard to find seating. They are still super fast, friendly, and helpful despite the overwhelming amount of people! On a weekday you can appreciate the New York-esque decor and vibe.

The whole experience reminds me of the 1980s movie "The Experts" (the flick where John Travolta met his late wife). Basically this cold war era movie has a couple of dudes trying to run clubs in NYC get kidnaped by the KGB and sent to Russia where they have a whole town of KGB agents living like Americans - but it wasn't quite right..it was like 30 years earlier in a random town in the Midwest (much like Madison, Wisconsin). That's the best way to describe it. Some of the vibe was there, but there was just something off about it. First thing that was a shock - the price! egg & cheese bagel: $9.00 . For reference, Bagel Boss on Long Island is just over $5.00. I get it - bagels are a scarcity in Madison Wisconsin (as is any decent food, but that's a different conversation) while it's a commodity in NYC metro area. I asked the woman why the sign for the menu shows $8.75 and she said they raised the prices. Well, any self-respecting yankee knows a bagel place should either have: 1) prices in different colors written on a black board, or 2) prices with the numbers and letters that can be changed on a board. Next, I was baffled by how long it took and how long i had to wait for bagels. That doesn't fly on the east coast. Look, I get alot of the university is kids from NYC metro area so you have to cater to them so a bagel shop is important. As for the bagels - looked okay at first, but the egg and cheese was really weird...it was mostly white with like an overcooked almost hard boiled yolk and i think they butter the bagels beforehand. Secondly for a scallion cream cheese bagel it showed the true shortcoming of the bagel where the exterior had a good crunch but the interior wasnt chewy it was too hard so when you try to separate the bagel it kinda of breaks. the taste isn't quite right. Anyway they deserve credit since the founder mentions Hot Bagels in Fairlawn in his story and met with Jaques Pepin who is awesome. I'll probably pass on returning as I kinda really dig Bagels Forever in Madison.

Bread was served with olive oil and a healthy serving of tasty parmesan cheese. The olive oil had a robust flavor to it, but I thought it tasted a little too strong. I like the balanced taste of the oil I use at home. For my main, I had the rigatoni with Sunday gravy. The dish was a meaty and hearty. I would've liked it better if the meatiness was balanced with a sweet tomato taste and a little spice. Fabiola's is like the Trader Joe's of restaurants.

On this visit, the owner seated us. The initial table was uncomfortably close to other diners, which my dining partner could not endure for even a minute with so much open space available. We moved to the other side of the wall. Service did not mind. I had to get the spaghetti and meatballs as I always do on a first visit to an Italian spot. Its always the measuring stick for me. Simple, homey, and satisfying -- the kind of place that makes you feel welcome while enjoying classic comfort food.

I arrived with a huge appetite and ordered the purple sticky rice, crispy pork belly, papaya salad, and eggrolls. I was absolutely blown away. The papaya salad was on another level--perfectly tart and sweet, exactly how I like it. The pork belly was easily some of the best I've ever had; the skin was incredibly crunchy, and the meat just melted in my mouth. It paired perfectly with the hot pepper sauce on the side. Top-tier food and wonderful service! Awesome and generous owners!

They do have some seating but the vibe feels like this is more of a carryout place (which I did). They have not only hot items but also pre-packaged grab and go items located next to where you order. Ordering is easy-make your selection and pay in the front. I ordered a 1/2 pound of pork belly and a link of sausage. I liked that both were fresh and presented right in front of you. From an execution/taste perspective, both were good (but not great). The sausage was on the greasy side and lacked the punch of lemongrass and other seasonings that are the mark of a good hmong sausage. The pork belly was also good but lacked the true deep crunch and crispiness that the top layer should have. Definitely would recommend it as it's hard to find such items. I will also be sure to try their pho to see how it stacks up.
