Finally got in here to dine in, and it was just as lovely as expected. We came here for lunch with a group of six and had a wonderful time. Service was fantastic and they were very helpful with taking our order and explaining anything on the menu. We found a table and they brought us over chips/salsa/queso. All of these were so good and it was a struggle not to eat it all... I wanted to enjoy my tacos. Everyone in our group enjoyed their food and there were absolutely zero leftovers remaining! My two pastor and one steak tacos were overflowing with yummy goodness and I was definitely full afterwards! It's so nice that you can order tacos a la carte (or you can go the full meal and get the rice and beans etc, but I never eat them) for a reasonable price. I did squeeze my limes over the tacos, but they were so good as is I didn't even sample the salsas they brought to the table. I think the first time or two I was at this place I didn't have as good of an impression of this place. My previous view was based hugely upon the poor customer experience that I had endured. But two weeks ago I returned because I was seriously craving a taco and the other nearby place had finally convinced me they were second rate. (I wrote a small bit, about that location, not more than a couple weeks back. I won't name it, but I rather hope these words will be taken to heart and affect change) But upon my reentry to this place I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Eduardo, the owner whom I have since met, is the reason why I have returned. An active and dedicated team needs their captain. So trying to reimagine the perfect taco place I had a fresh mindset and I think I was accurate about that choice. Today marks the 6th time in roughly 2 weeks. Basic ground beef tacos with onions, cilantro and some lime. Cheap and delicious. Absolutely not a bastardized low fat gringo taco. Not at all. Heavy on the filling and tasty. It's only missing one ingredient: spice. The orders include a pair of sauces, a green and red plastic cup with something resembling a hot sauce. Tuesday is a $1 ground beef taco. Sparse but not lacking in the meat. So glad I tried again. Eduardo has a key quality that makes a place feel welcoming. Friendly, and informative about the foods that are available. I don't speak Spanish, aside from simple jargon that every English speaker has to have as their basic vocabulary, even in regular American speak day to day situations. Pozole was delicious very authentic, watch out for bones! Shrimp tacos were perfectly cooked and a nice size shrimp. Counter service with seating available. The location is also a grocery store. Great takeout joint, and great value! Delicious tacos - we enjoyed each one we ordered - flaky fish tacos, perfectly plump shrimp, and tender tongue tacos! The pastor sope had chunks of pineapple. The guac was yummy, with chunks of avocado. I used to love this place. Got their shrimp tacos every Saturday. A couple of years ago I think they sold as I started to see new workers. First they overcooked the shrimp, but almost worse: the smell of Fabuloso cleaning solution. It is so strong it makes you sick AND has no business near food. Can't go back. This place was okay. We were so hyped up to try an authentic Mexican place. It was not it. We got barbacoa and fried fish plates. The barbacoa was tender but salty. The fried fish was crispy but had absolutely no flavors. The salad went with them had this weird dressing. However, their chips were great. The guac and salsa were good. Taqueria Gonzales is one of the best kept secrets in Middleton. This place is incredible! Great service, great value, great food. Best authentic Mexican food in Madison hands down! It is a part of a Mexican grocery store but they have booths and tables to dine in as well. Carry out is also an option that make people do here. If you do dine in you come in and they have a large menu with pictures on the wall. Someone takes your order at the counter and then they bring the food to you while you are seated. They have great chips, salsa and guacamole. Really authentic street tacos. And on tuesdays their tacos are $1.50 and BOGO Modelo beers. Delicious and quality food! Delicious tacos and quesadillas! The value here is incredible. The food was authentic and very reasonably priced, especially because both the tacos and quesadilla were stuffed with meat. I normally order chicken tacos, but the chorizo and steak were far superior to the chicken taco. Their salsas are not for the faint of heart! The taco platter came with rice and beans. I was pretty impressed how much meat was in the tacos. It was dressed nicely and simply with onions and cilantros. The Burritto was also pretty delicious. All the ingredients were stuffed and melted all together which made every bite tasty. I also ordered a chorizo sopa and the flavors were there but I think I couldn't enjoy it as much because I was so full. A burrito and two tacos and some rice and beans was quite a lot lol but I couldn't decide and it all sounded good. The red and green sauce on the side was good but quite spicy for me. I liked the flavor of the green one so I used it anyway:) . Again, it could have been because I was really full, but the carnitas meat was a bit tough. I think I got a lot of edge pieces. Hard to say. Delicious to eat. Abarrotes is an Immaculate and well organized market with a tasty grill smack dab in the middle. You order at the counter and they sit down in the small dining area to wait for your order to be called. I visited during lunch and ordered the taco platter-3 tacos, rice and beans for $8.99. They have a wide variety of proteins to choose from, I opted for tongue, barbacoa, and chorizo. Each taco comes with your typical two corn toritlla set-up topped with cilantro and onions. Simple. Perfection. I am a big fan of their tortillas. They are smaller than average (but stuffed to the gills with meat) but their taste is incredible. Besides taco, they also offer sopes, burritos and a few other specials on weekends. I will definitely be back as they offer up some of the best mexican in town. read more

I went here for takeout last weekend and I can't say enough good things! The steak tacos are the best and most authentic I've found in madison! Bistec con cilantro y cebolla, Classic! The rice was also pretty good. I loved the green salsa they included with the tacos too and I wish I could buy a bottle of that. I also loved that it was connected to a little market that had staples like rice, beans, and spices like Tajín, yum! The quesadilla was pretty average, but everything else came out great. Sadly they only had carnitas and tamales this Saturday at 4 p.m. The carnitas plate was a good amount of food with 5 chunks of lime (more than plenty!) and 5 soft corn tacos. The carnitas didn't really have any flavor on their own which was disappointing. Based on other reviews, I think my meal was a bit of a miss this day. They have nopales which I'd like to get on a future visit. They do also have a (small) selection of Mexican groceries and baked goods from Los Atlantes bakery. read more

I am so glad my aunt told me about this place. It is a small "hole in the wall" restaurant that I probably would not have noticed otherwise. Their food is absolutely FANTASTIC. I ordered 2 sopes (pork and steak) and a taco (barbacoa). Holy yum! The meat had so much flavor. I have never had a sope before and I am SO glad I tried them! My family ordered tortas because they say they are their favorite item. They are HUGE and looked amazing. So next time that's what I'm trying! From what I could tell, most items were served a la carte, which was fine with me because I could order more of a variety (in case you can't tell from my other reviews, I love trying different things from the same spot). They also sell beer and margaritas (also on my list to try next time!). Service was prompt and the food was made and delivered to our table quickly. My only complaint was that there was something sticky on the side of the table where I was sitting and it got on my shirt. When I told the gentlemen at the front, they quickly asked my server to help me and he cleaned the table off right away. I was able to get whatever it was off my shirt luckily, as well. I thought the prices were great.... Especially for the quality and quantity of food you get. Besides the restaurant, they also have a little store with traditional hispanic snacks, treats, candy, etc., in addition to other items. Great casual stop for delicious food. You order at the counter and can sit and eat inside if you want--plenty of space. We had tacos (carnitas and al pastor) and chicken enchiladas and everything was excellent. There are squirt bottles of two different salsas available so be sure to ask for them. This is actually the closest restaurant option to where I live - - what a delight to have a friendly, spotless taqueria with a fine kitchen just a 5 minute drive down Century. And with a grocery section for any desperate avocado/garlic/etc. needs right in the premises. I hope they do well - - this is actually a tough location, a kind of commuter armpit of a drive-by locale. And a chipotle-style taqueria (bins of stuff that sits there, and then gets spooned into the starch) is just up the street, and there's a sit-down mexi-place virtually in the same strip mall assemblage, and another large mexi-place is opening soon just up the street on Century. I hope Yuremi can draw a clientele, because the tacos are really solid. read more

Been on a bit of a taco bender lately and these are some of the best in Madison. The 3 taco plate with rice/beans is an awesome deal for the amount/quality of food you get. The main menu is posted on the wall with a special board right next to it. We visited on a Tuesday when the taco platter was $8.50 and maybe a $1 taco special as well (?), but the board was a little unclear. If the special comes with a can of soda or bottle of water make sure you grab only one of those and not a glass bottle of soda (which we did and ended up paying extra for the drinks anyway). Cooler of beer is available too. Service is awesomely helpful, plenty of seating, very clean and bright dining room. The tacos will definitely keep us coming back - the carnitas in particular were incredible. We tried the chips & guac as well; chips were warm and plentiful and the guac was a little flavorless. I'd love to try some of the weekend specials, if I can pass up the tacos! read more

I can't say enough about how tasty this homemade food is. The owners are humble, smiley and kind, I always enjoy talking to them about the story behind every dish they make. Besides, you can see how excited they get explaining from what region of Mexico every dish comes from and how proud they are of cooking them as authentic as possible. They have a small grocery store with a little bit of everything and a counter (you can see it right away once you enter the place) where you order the food and then they bring it to your table, they have a few tables there. So far, I have tried their tacos (the order comes with 3 tacos, your choice of meat, rice and refried beans) I liked the Al pastor tacos a lot, also some of their stews (guisados) Pollo en Adobo (that's when you forget your "etiquette" and lick your fingers, is that gooood) Chicken Soup (shredded chicken, cubed carrots and potatoes, tomatoes, chayote and a little tickle of chipotle chile, yummyyyyy, the chicken quesadilla is good also, I love that the tortilla doesn't get soggy and that the cheese is not that stringy. They have many kinds of beverages from Mexico and Central America, also beer but I think they don't let you drink it inside of the establishment. It is a little tiny bit more expensive than other small Mexican restaurants but it is so worth it! You have to try to it for yourself. Buen Provecho! :) read more

As a native Southern Californian let me tell you, I know real authentic Mexican food. As soon as I got to Madison I tried all the top spots, then I decided to drive the couple extra minutes out to Middleton to try Taqueria Gonzalez, best decision I've made since I got to town back in September, I've been coming here at least twice a week since. The tacos are as good or better than any others I've had anywhere, the burritos are as big as Popeyes' forearms (and usually bogo 1/2 price), the torta rolls were always soft and fluffy, and the fried jalapeños and onions are absolutely the best addition to anything on the menu, I squeeze some lime and a dash of salt over mine. I wish this lil family taqueria all the best, always welcoming, always attentive, a spot that I will definitely miss. So if you are reading this review, and you got this far, you owe it to yourself to go and give them a try and enjoy a fabulous flavorful meal.
