Barbacoa burrito bowl. And the black beans that somehow were not included.
    Stephen V.

At the beginning, this place was astounding mostly because side it was perhaps the only place in my immediate area to get a non corporate taco or burrito. A real family owned Mexican place right close to my home. But there was another place not too distant that was perhaps there all along and I had not found it yet. I don't recall. Lupe's has not changed the menu to any degree, at least not notably, but certainly not favorably. The same 5 proteins and the same black or refried beans. Each of them are very good. I always choose the black beans because I don't think the refried beans are truly and authenticity made with lard. I may be wrong. I just know that they taste like the low-fat version my wife (ex) prefers them. Same as my mother has always served them, albeit, mom doesn't actually make them, but she opens a can, as does the ex. With that background I just always assumed that refried beans were just a brown paste that tasted a little bit better than mud or glue. Except my childhood memories of my longest life long family's friend Lori who was from Mexico always had them I I ALWAYS wanted more. Then came the day around 4-5 years ago when I first learned to make them from a recipe that demanded lard be used. Suddenly they were not that bland slightly flavorful wallpaper paste, they had texture and immense flavor that flashed back to the days when Lori and her entire Mexican family had me at the table. Today the burrito bowl I ordered and denied the rice, accidentally also missed out on my black beans, which further reminded me that I began to only follow up with my order on the days when the owner was not present. The hired staff have always been spot on regarding their service and their ability to make my being a guest of this place might at the very least, be a welcome thing. They are polite and friendly. The owner: not even. He might be the guy who cooks the great meats and other items, even the not totally awesome refried beans (but black beans, are good enough to not draw my negative thoughts) and overly abundant filler aka rice. He's just kind of a guy that doesn't know that he's not outright unpleasant but he makes me want to turn around and go to other taco place next to that lame Chinese restaurant by McDs and Starbucks on century Ave. But the one absolute constant that this place does not ever not have available is the excellent spicy pickled onions. My only complaint about this is he's both stingy with them and refuses to suggest the recipe. Maybe that's why he never seems to like me, he thinks I will take that recipe and put him out of business. The most common thing that lousy cooks share: they don't want to reveal some recipe. A truly great chef is more than happy to reveal this because they know that the secret isn't simply the ingredients it's something in the technique itself that sets it apart. The place is clean. That's always been a plus.

Great food. The spicy pork is incredible and so are the portion sizes. Very under appreciated Mexican restaurant in the Madison area.

What you're looking at is the remains of two spicy pork tacos. I was so hungry, and so excited to eat them that I totally forgot to take a "before" picture. We met the owner, Jesus, at a social event New Year's Eve, and he invited us over to try his taqueria. The good: Everything! Staff is nice. Restaurant is clean. The menu is burritos and street tacos, and you sort of "build your own" by selecting meat and fillings -- all of which looked fresh and appetizing. Fresh tamales on the menu, but not always available, as they make them in small batches. Definitely a case of less being more, as they have a limited menu, but focus on doing a few things well rather than many things "meh." The bad: Nothing! Overall, a great experience, and I imagine I'll be back for lunch a couple times a month, if not more frequently.

Just had an incredibly delicious burrito! The staff was very friendly and efficient, and the food tasted fresh. The portion size was perfect, not too big like most burritos I tend to find. I dined in the restaurant, although it is a great place to grab and go as well. The dining area is on the small side, but it wasn't super crowded which I was happy about. Seems like a place that many of the high schoolers come over lunch. My only complaint is that the dining area was a little dirty, the chairs and windowsills could have been wiped down a bit. I definitely plan on coming back!

This is my 4th time here in the last couple of months and I cannot say enough good things. My personal favorite are the carnita tacos with spicy onions (thanks to a recommendation from a previous Yelper). I'm going to go ahead and say it, but the carnitas are so M-O-I-S-T! Do yourself a favor and just order one more than you think you will want. They are crave worthy!

Better than Chipotle/Qdoba! If you are craving a chain build it yourself Mexican restaurant, go to Lupe's! The tacos are super affordable ($2.50/taco) and you can add all the toppings you want. Additionally, there sides are $1-$3 dollars and large! We purchased 4 tacos + chips, salsa and black beans for $14 total. So much food for $7 each!! I loved the option of switching up the protein option on each taco.Lupe's is definitely going into my regular rotation!

Service was fantastic and they were very helpful with taking our order and explaining anything on the menu. We found a table and they brought us over chips/salsa/queso. All of these were so good and it was a struggle not to eat it all... I wanted to enjoy my tacos. Everyone in our group enjoyed their food and there were absolutely zero leftovers remaining! My two pastor and one steak tacos were overflowing with yummy goodness and I was definitely full afterwards! It's so nice that you can order tacos a la carte (or you can go the full meal and get the rice and beans etc, but I never eat them) for a reasonable price. I did squeeze my limes over the tacos, but they were so good as is I didn't even sample the salsas they brought to the table. It was the start of my day so I didn't get to enjoy an adult beverage, but certainly plan to be back again.

My previous view was based hugely upon the poor customer experience that I had endured. But two weeks ago I returned because I was seriously craving a taco and the other nearby place had finally convinced me they were second rate. (I wrote a small bit, about that location, not more than a couple weeks back. I won't name it, but I rather hope these words will be taken to heart and affect change) But upon my reentry to this place I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Eduardo, the owner whom I have since met, is the reason why I have returned. An active and dedicated team needs their captain. So trying to reimagine the perfect taco place I had a fresh mindset and I think I was accurate about that choice. Today marks the 6th time in roughly 2 weeks. Basic ground beef tacos with onions, cilantro and some lime. Cheap and delicious. Absolutely not a bastardized low fat gringo taco. Not at all. Heavy on the filling and tasty. It's only missing one ingredient: spice. The orders include a pair of sauces, a green and red plastic cup with something resembling a hot sauce. Tuesday is a $1 ground beef taco. Sparse but not lacking in the meat. So glad I tried again. Eduardo has a key quality that makes a place feel welcoming. Friendly, and informative about the foods that are available. I don't speak Spanish, aside from simple jargon that every English speaker has to have as their basic vocabulary, even in regular American speak day to day situations. The place vibrates with a lot of ethnic authenticity right here in my Middleton neighborhood where I've lived now for 15 of my 25 years in Wisconsin.

I tried calling for about 40 minutes (starting at home, then for my drive there). Nothing but a busy signal. Odd. I got there, and there was a new sign up for "La Casa Del Marisco". Okay, still Mexican food - so we'll try it. I go in and ask if it's the same place (just a new name) or completely different. He says it's all different. I grab a menu and it's the CAMINO REAL menu. Huh?Well, at least I know what I'm getting! The downside - all the prices were adjusted (like, our two entres were $5 and $6 more each - a considerable hike, imho). So, about that dropped star... the food was okay. Perhaps I was expecting more from the "new" place. But it just didn't hit me right. Plus, paying more for it all didn't help. We spent $57 for two entrees, a (smallish) side of cheese dip, and tip. For that money, it should be exceptional. It was not exceptional. At this point, we'll probably drop this place off of our "go-to list".

The coupon wasn't really feasible for one person, so we made a ladies' night of it and came as a group. It wasn't a super busy night and our service was very attentive! We started with a round of lime house margaritas. They came in a nice sized glass but I was not the only one who mentioned that they seemed a bit easy on the alcohol and watered down. Still not bad, though. Everybody raved about their food. Collectively we had the fish tacos, farmhouse quesadilla, shrimp/chicken/steak fajitas, and maybe a burrito? All around delicious food with generous portion sizes for the price. I got the chicken fajitas, used up all of my tortillas, and still had a good-sized amount for leftovers. I threw my leftovers over rice for lunch the next day and it was divine. Next time I'll struggle between choosing the steak fajitas or trying out some of the tacos. It is a bit annoying in this day and age that they won't split checks, but they do at least state if up front on the menu so there's no surprise. And after all that, I forgot to bring my coupon!!! We had such a pleasant experience that we all decided it was an excuse to come back in early December so we can all try something new on the menu :) Next time I'll remember to take photos of our fantastic food!
