Favorite tacos in the whole city. Always fresh, always consistent and everyone is so friendly. Would give six stars if I could :)

At the beginning, this place was astounding mostly because side it was perhaps the only place in my immediate area to get a non corporate taco or burrito. A real family owned Mexican place right close to my home. But there was another place not too distant that was perhaps there all along and I had not found it yet. I don't recall. Lupe's has not changed the menu to any degree, at least not notably, but certainly not favorably. The same 5 proteins and the same black or refried beans. Each of them are very good. I always choose the black beans because I don't think the refried beans are truly and authenticity made with lard. I may be wrong. I just know that they taste like the low-fat version my wife (ex) prefers them. Same as my mother has always served them, albeit, mom doesn't actually make them, but she opens a can, as does the ex. With that background I just always assumed that refried beans were just a brown paste that tasted a little bit better than mud or glue. Except my childhood memories of my longest life long family's friend Lori who was from Mexico always had them I I ALWAYS wanted more. Then came the day around 4-5 years ago when I first learned to make them from a recipe that demanded lard be used. Suddenly they were not that bland slightly flavorful wallpaper paste, they had texture and immense flavor that flashed back to the days when Lori and her entire Mexican family had me at the table. Today the burrito bowl I ordered and denied the rice, accidentally also missed out on my black beans, which further reminded me that I began to only follow up with my order on the days when the owner was not present. The hired staff have always been spot on regarding their service and their ability to make my being a guest of this place might at the very least, be a welcome thing. They are polite and friendly. The owner: not even. He might be the guy who cooks the great meats and other items, even the not totally awesome refried beans (but black beans, are good enough to not draw my negative thoughts) and overly abundant filler aka rice. He's just kind of a guy that doesn't know that he's not outright unpleasant but he makes me want to turn around and go to other taco place next to that lame Chinese restaurant by McDs and Starbucks on century Ave. But the one absolute constant that this place does not ever not have available is the excellent spicy pickled onions. My only complaint about this is he's both stingy with them and refuses to suggest the recipe. Maybe that's why he never seems to like me, he thinks I will take that recipe and put him out of business. The most common thing that lousy cooks share: they don't want to reveal some recipe. A truly great chef is more than happy to reveal this because they know that the secret isn't simply the ingredients it's something in the technique itself that sets it apart. The place is clean. Happen to be in the area and saw the positive Yelp reviews so thought I'd try it. Went in for an early dinner, so probably 5 p.m. and there was no other customers there. I ordered a burrito and have to say it was by far the largest burrito I've ever seen in my life. To quote Elf, "It's ginormous" (thatswhatshesaid). Seriously, it was very large - the first one I haven't been able to finish. The only negative is that the flavor was a bland, but add some hot sauce and you'll be good. What you're looking at is the remains of two spicy pork tacos. I was so hungry, and so excited to eat them that I totally forgot to take a "before" picture. We met the owner, Jesus, at a social event New Year's Eve, and he invited us over to try his taqueria. The good: Everything! Staff is nice. Restaurant is clean. The menu is burritos and street tacos, and you sort of "build your own" by selecting meat and fillings -- all of which looked fresh and appetizing. Fresh tamales on the menu, but not always available, as they make them in small batches. Definitely a case of less being more, as they have a limited menu, but focus on doing a few things well rather than many things "meh." The bad: Nothing! Overall, a great experience, and I imagine I'll be back for lunch a couple times a month, if not more frequently. read more

A no frills taqueria with Chipotle style ordering and preparation. As soon as you order you'll get your food. Can't beat the speedy service. The tacos are huge and tasty that'll fill you up quick. We had barbacoa, spicy pork, chorizo, and steak. Only downside was that the chorizo was more like ground beef cooked with salsa. Next time I'd get 2 instead of 3 since they're so filling. A-ok. The prices range from pretty low to higher depending on the item. Tacos are def the way to go for a good value. Foods have been prepped and are in the counter you can't really see that great through. The shells are warmed up. The corn are doubled up which is pretty standard so they don't rip, but I prefer just one so I can reduce my tortilla intake by 50% and try to remember when ordering to ask for just one. The filling isn't that heavy and wet so didn't have an issue with breakage. Solid choice, but also just ok for me. This is a more than decent local taco joint. Prices are reasonable and the serving portions are big... sharable big. We ordered the nachos with chicken and the three taco combo (pork and al pastor). The habanero sauce packs a flavorful and pleasant wallop. We did the carry out deal... albeit there are some tables both inside and outside. This is an order at the counter joint and it's not an ambiance sort of place. While the food was good... they did microwave our nacho's which did add some sogginess... Just had an incredibly delicious burrito! The staff was very friendly and efficient, and the food tasted fresh. The portion size was perfect, not too big like most burritos I tend to find. I dined in the restaurant, although it is a great place to grab and go as well. The dining area is on the small side, but it wasn't super crowded which I was happy about. Seems like a place that many of the high schoolers come over lunch. My only complaint is that the dining area was a little dirty, the chairs and windowsills could have been wiped down a bit. I hate to leave bad reviews, but the current 4.5 star rating is just no where near representative of the restaurant quality. The food is neither fresh nor authentic. I understand having to cater to their perspective customers, but the food was so far from authentic that I would almost label it as false advertising. I personally had a carnitas burrito, and the carnitas were just not carnitas, rather dry, chewy, poorly marinated pork. The same applied for my family members, who were also expecting authentic tasting tacos (since the establishment was clearly Mexican owned, and the workers even conversed with us in Spanish), were severely underwhelmed by poorly executed renditions of several other protein options (pastor, asada, etc). Additionally, we went at a time where it wasn't very busy, which meant the food had been out for who knows how long (keep in mind it isn't temp controlled). This may have contributed to the underwhelming and dry flavors, but it actually ended up making both my mom and I rather sick. It was quite disappointing, especially with the current rating which made me have high hopes, but it's clear the people rating this 4+ stars have never had authentic Mexican food. I highly recommend places like señor machetes or la taguara for authentic renditions of Latin American cuisine. read more

With a four star average I had high expectations. These two stars reflect my disappointment. Came in for tacos and opted for three different meat options. I selected cilantro, onion, cortijo cheese, sliced jalapeños and salsa as toppings. When the resulting basket was put on the counter, I knew I would be disappointed. Portion sizes were sad, and my chicken taco had about half of the meat compared to the other two. Picadillo and chicken meats were bland, steak was the only option worth repeating. The corn tortillas were poor, they were falling apart but still thick, with a rubbery texture. This is the complete opposite of what I look for in a tortilla. We also made the mistake of ordering chips and guacamole. For $4.50 we received a two ounce foam container of very acidic guac, and a paper bag of reheated bargain brand tortilla chips. Mom and I are on a mission to try lots of new Mexican food joints. Lupe's came up and it was time to check it out. Doing some research, I knew it would have the Qdoba/Chipotle-like "watch them make your burrito" system, so there were no surprises there. I was tempted to go with three tacos instead, but I couldn't resist the burrito. I went with the steak (shredded) and it was pretty decent. I felt it was a little dry, but once I got to the "wet" toppings (sour cream, salsa), it was better. With the build-your-own model, I liked being able to ask for a little of this, a little of that, versus just getting what they put on it for you. Overall, it was good - I'd have it again, but with all the competition out there, I'm not sure I'd trek across town when there are other options closer to me. Their location is great for the businesses and housing in that area. Next time, I'll probably go with the tacos and see how that goes. I feel like three stars is a bit low - it's better than that, but like I said, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to have it. read more

Very solid grab and go taco/burrito place. I came here to grab lunch on the go and this was perfect. The ingredients tasted very fresh and I was able to get my food in 10 minutes or less. It is your pretty standard mexico grill ordering style. You tell them what you want and they go through what you want on it. I decided on a burrito bowl with chicken and extra hot salsa. They were pretty sparing on the hot salsa but I'm sure if I ask for extra that would solve that issue. With working close by in Middleton I will be back for lunch. Because he is Mexican and he just wants to go to the places where he thinks it's closer to the authentic Mexican flavors he knows. First, you need to tell them if you want tacos, burritos, tostadas, quesadillas, tortas, etc, then into the meat (shredded chk, roasted pork, picadillo (a mix of ground pork and beef), chorizo (it has cubed potatoes) and beef. It doesn't come with rice and beans automatically, there is an extra charge for those so it's up to you if you want them or not. Last but not least, you pick your toppings and what kind of spicy salsa you like. Ok, let's get to the exciting part, the food!! we both liked their tacos (chorizo, beef and roasted pork) they were tasty and interesting because each meat had its own distinctive flavor, not like other places where you don't even know which one is which. Rice and beans were nice too. I loved their roasted tomatillo sauce, it tasted so fresh and not too spicy. My husband and I absolutely love going here for a quick and tasty bite. It's a small, family run restaurant and the owners are a delight. Every time I get the exact same thing: 1-2 tacos ($2.50 each), flour tortilla, rice, steak, pico de gallo (a tomato/onion/cilantro mix), cotijo cheese (I highly recommend this over the other cheese they have; it just isn't the same) & tomatillo salsa - so fresh and perfect each and every time.
