This review is cowritten with my 10 year old son John who is as much a foodie as his dad. Norse Nook in Deforest Wisconsin was a little hard to find. we noticed the pie awards right away. Because of a staffing shortage we had to wait about 10 minutes. The hot chocolate is creamy and sweet. The pie of the month is rhubarb crunch so we started with that. The crunch is sweet (a little too sugary for my preference-John disagrees). He calls it a party in your mouth. John ordered the corned beef breakfast wrap and I went with the potato pancakes. John's wrap reminded us of crepes stuffed with. Or beef, eggs and topped with hollandaise sauce. Meaty, creamy. The description on the menu doesn't come out the way you expect it comes out better. I wish the potato pancakes were crispier and the Sodexo brand apple sauce was a disappointment. The rhubarb sauce leftover from the pie was a good substitute. Service was great, Cassandra was super attentive and always ready with the hottest tastiest drip coffee around. There's a cozy feel to the place and the pie alone is worth the trip.

PIE!PIE!PIES! Classic Midwest pies that only your grandma can make! You have to get the raisin rum meringue, heaven on earth taste! Location was easy to find, lots of Norse breakfast and old world favorite! Don't miss this if you're in Madison or on your way to the Dells!

We dined at Norske Nook Restaurant on a Friday morning and had a wonderful time! When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't super busy, there were only four other tables occupied by fellow diners. We were seated and served coffee immediately by the friendly staff. We placed our orders after a bit, and the plates got delivered very fast! The French toast special was good, but the morning sampler stole the show! The bacon and eggs were perfect, the breakfast potatoes were FANTASTIC, and the buttered toast with fruit jam was delicious. This is the perfect breakfast stop! I can't wait to try the Norwegian breakfast specialties the next time I visit.

I was heading to the Madison airport and decided to make a detour for lunch. Madison downtown area is a pain for parking, so I decided to go with DeForest. Norske Nook had a large parking, and the ambiance of a nice diner. Spacious, and well lit. The service was excellent, and the food was not the healthiest, but quite tasty. I was initially going for one of the Lesfe wraps, but was swayed by the day's special of the bread bowl. It seemed perfect for the cold, snowy day. I'll come back a different day for one of the wraps.

    Sour cream lingonberry

Stopped in for a cup of coffe and slice of pie. I was not disappointed!! Service was good. Our waiter was very kind and gracious. We had cherry pie à la mode and sour cream lingonberry. Both were delish.

When we got here it had just opened, so thankfully we beat the rush. This place will be busy in 45 minutes and you'll be waiting for a table. But today was a lucky day for the wait time, especially since the signs on the door and hostess stand when you walk in mentioned them being short staffed. I love a good morning breakfast place, and this place is themed so it really makes me happy. The Norwegian/Scandinavian art and other stuff for sale in the place makes it a bit more than a restaurant/bakery. We always get stumped with the pies, the cookies, cakes. And they're all good so it's hard to choose what to get. The prices aren't that bad, not quite Madison prices. So it's not super expensive to get a pie slice with your meal. For food I got a fall breakfast sandwich on a cranberry bread. It was very crisp, the egg was perfect. 9/10. I often forget which place has these little hash brown rounds, but these are the best way to get hash brown. And they cook them to perfection. Buttery and crispy. 10/10, I love these! The potato pancakes today were really good. They can be a little hit and miss. 8/10, but these do have a slightly more savory taste than most. They give you apple sauce, we usually ask for a side of sour cream. The mix of the two is wonderful! This place is a great consistent place to go for good food, and service. The seating and tables are extremely accessible, things are spread open on the floor. You don't have to worry about being right next to someone. I look forward to going again!

I believe my friend ordered Potato Pancakes They arrived with lingonberries, delicious

Hello Norske Nook! My friends and I walk though DeForest often. We've popped in for coffee or pie. This time we popped in to sit and enjoy a meal. We were sat and greeted promptly. Beverages arrived quickly, the food arrived hot and as expected. The specialty at Norske Nook is Pie! They are pie masters. The potato pancakes with lingonberry were delicious. This was my friends order The corned beef hash with beef brisket went down smooth, eggs were cooked well, and the biscuit was good. Overall the meal hit home, it was nice and comforting. A good ma & pa sort of dinner. Would love a lighter option like yogurt parfait.

We stopped in Osseo on a whim, and I'm so glad we got pie while in town. Wow! This is a new must stop on our next trip through Wisconsin.

Ask the Community - Norske Nook Restaurant & Bakery

Do they offer vegan pies? Do they offer gluten free pie crusts?

They do have little "personal pan" pies that are gluten free so you get your own mini pie. They also have a full gluten free and vegan/vegetarian menu, just ask to see it.

El Alegre is located in a small modern strip of shops, with a party center they run next door. The restaurant is medium sized with a nice bar in the corner by the kitchen. The room is sleek and modern with black walls and tables, wood chairs and floors, and a colorful neon strip around the ceiling. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The menu is two sided and manages to have a nice variety without being overstuffed. I ended up ordering the Camarones a la Diabla, as someone who loves spicy shrimp it sounded great. A bit of a wait for the food, but the place was busy with the dining room almost full including a couple of larger tables. The chips and salsa was ok, but nothing special but provided a nice prelude while I waited for the meal. The meal came out nicely presented on a square white plate, which set off the colorful meal. The shrimp were nice sized, plump and well cooked; the sauce was excellent, not overly spicey, but instead complex and delicious with an interesting mix of flavors, it seemed to be similar to a mole instead of just a hot sauce. The refried beans and spanish rice were both good and the guacamole, sour cream and small salad was a nice compliment to the meal. The flour tortillas were very good, freshly griddled and fresh. I was very impressed with El Alegre, the decor is a nice change from most Mexican restaurants. I was very impressed with their version of Camarones a la Diabla, usually it is served with a fairly simple hot sauce, here they created a wonderful and complex sauce that perfectly complimented the shrimp and provided a true treat. If you are in the area and looking for some great Mexican food El Alegre is well worth a visit. If the rest of the menu is anything like my meal it is a great flavorful interpretation of Mexican food.

Of course there was a Taco Bell close to the exit from I-90, but that wasn't going to cut it. So, we found El Alegre about two miles into town. The place was packed Well, we had a very good meal with happy service. A big sign on the wall in the kitchen said "work hard and be nice to people ". Gotta love that. So we were coming South on I-90 and remembered El Alegre. Being vegetarian, I usually find plenty of options in a Mexican restaurant (and also Chinese and Italian). This menu had a vegetarian section with about six or seven choices, but I looked over the rest of the very large menu and found several versions of Chile Relleño. I've never seen anything but the one stuffed with cheese anywhere else. Well, they had a version stuffed with vegetables! I had to try it. I am so glad I did. It was delicious and a very generous portion served with rice and beans that rose above the standard usually experienced. My wife had a shrimp dish that I sampled and loved. She said the margaritas were also excellent. So, if you find yourself on I-90, you won't regret driving a couple miles off the highway to find El Alegre!

My burger looked great but that's where it ended...there was so much guacamole on it that when I cut it in half, guacamole went everywhere. It was overkill, honestly. I couldn't even pick it up to eat it. I had to use a knife and fork to eat it because it was a horrible mess. The onion rings were perfectly crispy and ketchup was the perfect accompaniment.
