To begin with, the coffee was refreshingly excellent. Knowing this place is known for its award-winning pies, great coffee is an added plus. We came for breakfast, andI I had the corned beef hash. I substituted a biscuit for toast and although it was huge and well-made, I didn't care for the biscuit''s touch of sweetness. They would be perfect if you eat them with jelly. I prefer mine with butter. The hash itself was prepared exactly how I ordered it and the eggs were a perfect over medium as I asked for,too. I was very pleased. Then came the pie. Wow! I had never had pie with breakfast before but when at Norske Nook enjoying a slice is practically a requirement. I had the lemon meringue and it was phenomenal. The meringue was so high and perfectly made, it was difficult to eat. Absolutely wonderful. I had been to the original location in Osseo, Wisconsin years ago, and I was pleased to see that this one existed in DeForest. The pies never disappoint. A delightful stop! It's been a year and I wonder why we waited so long! We had a day date for brunch. It wasn't busy and the staff was attentive. This review is cowritten with my 10 year old son John who is as much a foodie as his dad. Norse Nook in Deforest Wisconsin was a little hard to find. we noticed the pie awards right away. Because of a staffing shortage we had to wait about 10 minutes. The hot chocolate is creamy and sweet. The pie of the month is rhubarb crunch so we started with that. The crunch is sweet (a little too sugary for my preference-John disagrees). He calls it a party in your mouth. John ordered the corned beef breakfast wrap and I went with the potato pancakes. John's wrap reminded us of crepes stuffed with. Or beef, eggs and topped with hollandaise sauce. Meaty, creamy. The description on the menu doesn't come out the way you expect it comes out better. I wish the potato pancakes were crispier and the Sodexo brand apple sauce was a disappointment. The rhubarb sauce leftover from the pie was a good substitute. We were seated and served coffee immediately by the friendly staff. We placed our orders after a bit, and the plates got delivered very fast! The French toast special was good, but the morning sampler stole the show! The bacon and eggs were perfect, the breakfast potatoes were FANTASTIC, and the buttered toast with fruit jam was delicious. I was heading to the Madison airport and decided to make a detour for lunch. Madison downtown area is a pain for parking, so I decided to go with DeForest. Norske Nook had a large parking, and the ambiance of a nice diner. Spacious, and well lit. The service was excellent, and the food was not the healthiest, but quite tasty. I was initially going for one of the Lesfe wraps, but was swayed by the day's special of the bread bowl. It seemed perfect for the cold, snowy day. Very limited hours. Most places serving breakfast they "warm up" your coffee endlessly. On our first visit it was like pulling teeth to get my coffee refilled. Probably time to find a new breakfast spot. 3/19 Unacceptable food quality. and there were only 2 tables with people - so not busy on a snowy Saturday. Let me share our experience and you can make up your own mind. Tea and Coffee - Before ordering we ordered (2) hot tea and Coffee. Breakfast black Tea needs hot +205-212* water to steep, we received a pot of lukewarm water probably about 160*.... made for poor tea. Coffee was hot but bitter. When the server poured it was served from a full pot. I assumed the bitterness was from the brand of coffee. Strike one. We ordered 2 orders of Ultimate Potato Pancake with eggs over-easy. Advertised as a plate-sized pancake, bacon, and eggs breakfast.- The pancake was small to the size of the plate, the taste was good, however, the over-cooked frazzled eggs were terrible. To most, "Over-Easy" means, a runny yoke, my breakfast entire egg was "Frazzled" and a hard center. the undercooked bacon was disappointing. Strike two. My son had the "Hashbrown Supreme" and its description starts with "crispy fried hashbrowns" - He ordered with eggs over-easy. Now crispy has some browning on the potatoes and I think crispy has a bit more browning. The potatoes were 100% white with not a single brown crisp, undercooked, and pretty tasteless. Again the eggs were frazzled, had no runny yolk, and were disappointing. Strike three. Based on our experience we are taking our business elsewhere. Perhaps the cook had a bad day, or they are just terribly understaffed (not the case from what we could see), and they were not busy. read more

I came here a while back, on a quest to find Scandinavian food in the cradle of Scandinavian-American civilization, the Upper Midwest. Sadly, there are not so many establishments that carry on the legacy of the Scandinavian settlers' cuisine nowadays - so I was intrigued whether Norske Nook would live up to its namesake. Unfortunately, Norkse Nook was a disappointment. The restaurant does appear to honor Scandinavia on the surface - containing a painted mural of a Norwegian family in their mountainous homeland and a small selection of Scandinavian bric-a-brac for sale - but the menu is predominantly Midwestern. I wanted to get the most Scandinavian thing on the menu, so I opted for the lefse wrap with Norwegian meatballs and mashed potatoes. The meatballs were pretty revolting, having a dry texture and strange reddish hue that made me question what kind of animal they were originally derived from. The mashed potatoes were also dry and flavorless, and when wrapped all together in the lefse, the meal resembled a very bleak and sullen burrito that I think even the grimmest of Vikings, with his tastebuds dulled by a lifetime of lutefisk and snaps-abuse, would turn his nose up at. I ordered a slice of pie for dessert, in the hopes that it would help me forget the atrocity that was my entrée. I don't remember the name of the slice, but it had a strange egg-foam consistency and was decorated with raisins. It was cloyingly sweet - the type of dessert that would be appreciated by the other geriatric occupants with whom I shared the dining room. I didn't finish it, and decided that it was time to book it, as I certainly was not going to have the Scandinavian culinary experience I had hoped for at this restaurant. It's rather unfortunate that shortly after leaving the restaurant, I was overcome with a wave of nausea that persisted for the rest of the day. I don't know if this was due to a psychological trauma-response caused by my dismal meal, or if I genuinely was suffering mild poisoning from poor food preparation/quality, but it was certainly enough to guarantee that I would never return to Norske Nook. Still, I give Norske Nook two stars, instead of just one, in the hope that they will improve their offerings and help make Wisconsin Scandinavian again. read more

When we got here it had just opened, so thankfully we beat the rush. This place will be busy in 45 minutes and you'll be waiting for a table. But today was a lucky day for the wait time, especially since the signs on the door and hostess stand when you walk in mentioned them being short staffed. I love a good morning breakfast place, and this place is themed so it really makes me happy. The Norwegian/Scandinavian art and other stuff for sale in the place makes it a bit more than a restaurant/bakery. We always get stumped with the pies, the cookies, cakes. And they're all good so it's hard to choose what to get. The prices aren't that bad, not quite Madison prices. So it's not super expensive to get a pie slice with your meal. For food I got a fall breakfast sandwich on a cranberry bread. It was very crisp, the egg was perfect. 9/10. I often forget which place has these little hash brown rounds, but these are the best way to get hash brown. And they cook them to perfection. Buttery and crispy. 10/10, I love these! The potato pancakes today were really good. They can be a little hit and miss. 8/10, but these do have a slightly more savory taste than most. They give you apple sauce, we usually ask for a side of sour cream. The mix of the two is wonderful! This place is a great consistent place to go for good food, and service. The seating and tables are extremely accessible, things are spread open on the floor. You don't have to worry about being right next to someone. I look forward to going again! read more

Hello Norske Nook! My friends and I walk though DeForest often. We've popped in for coffee or pie. This time we popped in to sit and enjoy a meal. We were sat and greeted promptly. Beverages arrived quickly, the food arrived hot and as expected. The specialty at Norske Nook is Pie! They are pie masters. The potato pancakes with lingonberry were delicious. This was my friends order The corned beef hash with beef brisket went down smooth, eggs were cooked well, and the biscuit was good. Overall the meal hit home, it was nice and comforting. Being Norwegian, I always have to check out Norsk restaurants, shops, etc., so the Norske Nook was a must try. We stopped there on our way home from Wisconsin Dells for breakfast and pie. I ordered the lefse wrap supreme, which was very good. Definitely order extra hollandaise. It was basically a lefse breakfast burrito. My husband ordered the potato pancake. He liked that it was nice and light and didn't fill him up too much, so he could have a piece of pie. Oh the choices of pie!!!!! I had such a hard time deciding. I got a slice of the chocolate mint, which was good...but I'm kicking myself for not getting a traditional pie. My husband got the pecan pie and loved it. There's a little shop section where they sell apparel, books and other Norwegian and Swedish items. I hope to be back some day so I can try more pie, and take a whole pie home as well! read more

Both our meals were absolutely terrible. I had a half order of meat balls and mash potatoes and gravy and they literally brought me out a huge platter with 1 1/2 meatballs that were about 3/4 of an inch big. If you are a fan of the Norske Nook restaurants you know what to expect. But we had somehow never been to this particular one. First it's in a really large building right on a corner - way bigger than a lot of the other Norskes. The menu is largely the same, but you know that each one of these is unique in its own way. I got what I always get - the Ultimate Potato Pancake, which is a plate-size potato pancake with bacon, eggs and a giant puddle of hollandaise sauce. It was perfect, as usual. My husband got the pork lefse wrap, which he was disappointed in. He said the lefse was good but the pork was not the same as it is at the other restaurants, and he liked it less. We of course got pie. I was disappointed in the options available and the apple pie I got was just OK. Our waitress was a little distracted. We had to remind her to get us refills that we'd requested, etc. And her knowledge of which types of pie were available was pretty lacking. We had to have a really long conversation before getting to our pie choices, and she told us she didn't know in response to several questions. It was OK. read more

Arrived at an excellent, relaxed, not busy time @ about 2:30 afternoon. Their waitress was super pleasant and courteous and my food was served fast and hot. The ham and bean soup and cole slaw seemed exceptional, considering they were 'sides'..made fresh from scratch and creamy and tasty. The wrap was unexpectedly huge and stuffed with generous portions of grilled chicken strips, spinach and mandarin oranges. The sauce was deliciously different and the slivered almonds generous. This was my second visit ( I am from IN) and I intend to return..maybe for breakfast. It is about 15-20 minutes south of The Dells and about the same from Madison. read more

We tried few times in this restaurant, it is like Sunday home cooking; which is okay but not great. Taste as should be, you can cook the same in your home. However the service is good and welcoming. People in Wisconsin speak of the original Norskie Nook in Osseo in hushed, revert tones. I've heard tell of people driving to Osseo from Milwaukee simply for a slice of pie. When I heard the Nook was opening a second location in Deforest, I was initially excited. After eating there tonight, I'm a little less excited. Got there a little before 5:30 on a Friday night. Any Wisco restaurant worth its salt has a Friday fish fry, and it's packed to the gills ('scuse the pun) by 5:00. Heck, we tried to eat at a different place in Deforest first, but they had a 40 minute wait time at 5:15. When we got to the Nook, it was almost empty. Not a good sign. We were seated. Our order was taken by a competent, if uncomfortable-looking server. The wait time for food was fine (it should be given that the place was empty). Now, I'm always concerned about places with "home cooked" food. I can cook "home cooked" food at home. I want something that tastes better and looks better than I can make it in my own kitchen. The Nook failed on that end. I got an open-faced turkey sandwich with gravy. The turkey was bland. The gravy was even moreso. It was thin and watery. It didn't taste like anything. The mashed potatoes were real, but like everything else on the plate--tasteless. I got a slice of lemon cream cheese pie after dinner. It was good, but not great--certainly not worth the fabled 10-hour round trip from Milwaukee to Osseo. All in all, it was a forgettable meal at a place that should be better than that. Maybe they need a new head chef. Maybe they need to change up the recipes. Maybe the place was never really that good, and it's only because Osseo is in the boonies without a lot of competition that the original location rose to its mythical prominence. The food wasn't bad. The service wasn't bad. It was just wholly without character, enthusiasm, or flavor. In a world with so much competition for the dining dollar, the Norskie Nook is a place that probably won't get my money again. read more

I was very intrigued when I first heard of this place. If I remember correctly, it was supposed to be a fixture in the area, giving a nod to Wisconsin's Norwegian/Scandinavian immigrant roots. Well, it was nothing short of disappointing. This place is getting two stars solely because of the cute gift shop in the front of the restaurant. We stopped on our way home to Milwaukee from Wisconsin Dells. We mainly stopped to check the place out and get a slice of pie, which is what they are known for. Our waitress was less than thrilled that we weren't eating an entire meal. We might have tried an entree, but other than a lefse wrap and "Norwegian" pancakes with lingonberries, nothing on the menu was Scandinavian. Anyway, there is a list of pies on the back of the menu, but not all were available. We asked our waitress which were available, and she replied (rather unenthusiastically), "Tell me what you want and I'll tell you if I have it." "Okay, maybe they have a ton and listing them would take forever," I thought. No. I listed three pies, and they had none. Finally I settled on blueberry. It was WAAAAAAY too sweet, and came out in a small, broken up slice. Disappointing. Then the waitress told my kid there was no way she could get cucumbers on her salad. Not because they didn't carry them, but because she couldn't have them. Okay sis, we get the hint. She dropped off the check and we never saw her again.
