The food was delicious. I had the everything omelette and I have to say I think it was the most delicious omelette I've ever had the jalapeños gave it a flavorful bite. My wife had scrambled eggs and bacon. The bacon was delicious, perfectly cooked. The strawberry preserves were great too. Giuseppe, our waiter, was wonderfully attentive, made great suggestions, and made sure my wife's food was gluten-free. We sat overlooking the lake, watching the birds and squirrels, and listening to a beautiful musical background. I was fortunate to visit 1878 on the Lake with a very large group, so I got to taste a lot of the menu. What a treat! Everything I ate was amazing, and from start to finish, our dinner was wonderful. We got a few appetizers: the spinach artichoke dip with crostini, the pork belly burnt end lollipops, and the crab puffs. My favorite were the crab puffs, and not just because they had a sprinkling of roe on the them (but they surely did!) They were tender on the inside, and lightly breaded on the outside, and came with a creamy remoulade to dip them in. Next was the soup course, which was a beer cheese soup. Honestly, this might have been the best thing I ate all night! No! It was the best thing I ate while I was in Lake Geneva. My table mates also agreed: the beer cheese soup at 1878 on the Lake is special. Soup was followed by a burrata dish: cold, round globes of burrata on top of arugula, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and served with crostini. I'm a big burrata fan, and this one really hit. By the time the entrees hit the table, I was stuffed. Could I possibly eat the entrees that were sent to the table: sliced ribeye, braised short ribs, lobster pasta, seared sea scallops and a side of broccolini, asparagus and shaved Brussels sprouts? I gave it my best shot! My heart will always lie with short ribs, always. So that was my favorite. The short ribs here are fall-off-the bone tender, and served with a creamy polenta and red wine demi-glace. They were perfect. Dessert was next, but I had to take it to go, because I couldn't possibly eat another bite after our wonderful and filling meal. I got some mud pie to go. (Apparently, it's award-winning, according to the menu!) But who are we kidding: Dessert goes into a different chamber in the stomach, so by the time I got to my hotel room, I was ready to get all up in that pie. It was a large piece of pie, so even just a few bites was satisfying. The service was great. Our servers were attentive but not obtrusive. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has lake views. Stopped by for dinner the other night and it was a nice experience. The waitress started us off with amazingly warm and delicious bread. we ordered drinks, the Brazilian martini was amazing. Got spinach dip as an app - the crostini were too hard, but the dip was good - ate it with the bread. I got a large caesar salad and a side of mac. I loved breakfast here. On weekdays in April, I easily got a table by the window. The server was attentive and so friendly. The second day she remembered my order perfectly and I wanted it exactly the same again. Both days I had coffee, a bowl of oatmeal, and a yogurt parfait. The oatmeal comes with dried apples, fresh berries, and brown sugar. The Greek yogurt is plain unsweetened with layers of lovely granola and dried cherries, with berries. The coffee is superb. They served it in teeny cups so the second day, I brought a larger mug from the room. They offered to also give me a to go mug filled with coffee. Yes please! Both days I was seated right at the window with an amazing expansive view of the lake. Lunch, however, I didn't enjoy. First day I had blackened walleye. It was excellent fish and served quite classy with a little pickle and olive. However, the fish was so overly seasoned that it felt too much for me. It didn't agree with my annoyingly fragile belly. The second day I had the caesar and the croutons are the best I've had because they're made from focaccia. Yum! However, the chicken sandwich was boring. Perhaps because I asked for no aioli in an attempt to appease my belly. But the chicken wasn't interesting and the Gouda had little flavor. I'm sure the aioli would have helped. Next time I'll just stick to breakfast here. read more

Breakfast on the lake - how could you go wrong? We flew in to the airport. The runway markings are almost invisible, and it's really fun to cross the highway to get to the resort. It's around a 1/2 mile walk. You can either go to the left and enter the convention space, or go into the reception area for the hotel, walk to the windows on the south side, and then down the hallway to the left, crossing the road to go in the same entrance. Then keep walking south until you find the 1878 on the Lake Restaurant. We ate here regularly years ago, and decided to go for a visit. The legendary breakfast buffet is no more, and you can order off the menu. I had their Belgium Waffle with bacon (it came with 4 strips), while my wife had the Bourbon French Toast with pork sausage links (3). She also ordered tea. I had the orange juice, which was quite good. The french toast and waffles were served with a side of whipped cream and maple syrup. Both were cooked properly. Service was good, but it took a while to clear the ticket. It also took a few minutes to get seated, and they weren't very busy. 3 of the restaurant staff walked past us until the hostess came out from the back and seated us. We'll go back for dinner when it warms up a bit. read more

Wonderful lake views. Enjoyable atmosphere. Solid food. We had a chance to dine at 1878 during a recent stay at Lake Lawn Resort. I'll preface with a disclaimer that the service is indeed quite slow here. I think it's because it's the main restaurant on the resort "compound" if you will, so everyone comes here which means you're really on their time. The husband and I both started off with a mimosa, a refreshing start to brunch. I ordered the egg white frittata and would say it was A-OK. It had sauteed spinach, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and arugula. Just a little on the dry side. It also came with a generous bowl of seasonal fruit. My husband had the chorizo egg tacos, to his enjoyment. We also added a side of bacon and side of sausage to our order to share. Overall I felt the bill was a bit pricey for what ya get, but all in all it was still a lovely breakfast. Loved the decor here. We went out for a late Valentine's dinner, and honestly the ambiance couldn't have been better. It had that perfect balance -- lively enough to feel special but still relaxed enough that we could actually enjoy the evening. You never felt rushed, which is rare on a packed holiday night, and it set the tone right away. That's usually my biggest concern on nights like this. Food-wise, we went with the filet and the scallops, and both absolutely delivered. The filet was cooked exactly how you hope it will be -- tender, flavorful, no shortcuts -- and the scallops were equally impressive, with great texture and seasoning that didn't overpower the natural flavor. Lake Lawn Lodge has always been a special place to me. My fiancée and I were here tonight and though we were met with smiles, the service was beyond sub-par. Our complimentary bread was served, by the time the appetizers came the bread plate was still on the table. Not a huge deal but noticeable considering our waitress had come to check in on us a couple of times. By the time our main course came there was zero urgency to clear both the bread plate and the appetizer plate. We sat through our whole my with basically a dirty table. If I wanted a dirty table..I would have gone to Burger King. Also, we had asked for a wine list. Our waitress never came back to see if we had wanted anything else to drink..not to mention our water glasses were empty for a good 10-15 minutes. When our water glasses were finally filled, the waitress had taken my fiancée's glass from the table to go and re-fill it! Did she spit in it?!? It was half full when it was brought back. Never have I ever gone to a so called fine dining restaurant and have that happen. Also, on the Waygu burger, the bacon that was served on it was 90% fat! How disgusting! My fiancée bit into the burger and thought it was mozzarella cheese. If you're going to charge $25 for a burger at least make it edible because in addition to the fat filled bacon the burger was extremely greasy for Waygu. Some of these things are understandable on a packed and busy night, but the restaurant had maybe 8% of their tables occupied. This is all just very frustrating considering that Lake Lawn Lodge has always been special to me. Some more attentive staff would have made this experience and this review better. read more

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to dine here twice for breakfast and had a great experience both times! This really reminded me of those wonderful breakfasts I enjoy on cruise ships, with a fantastic view to the outside and comfortable furniture on the inside. Everything about this place is elegant, from the decor to the furniture -- really making this a great value as well, with normal breakfast prices but upscale decor. The service also matched the high standards of this business - where we were served promptly and professionally by different waiters on each visit, all who were very helpful and attentive. The food was excellent that we had here, consistently good across the board for every dish we tried. The Smorg Board is an incredible deal with more than enough food to feed yourself and take half home. The fruit offered here was fresh, country scramble was tasty and not overly salty, brioche french toast was very fluffy and flavorful, maple sausage was tasty and not too oily, bacon was nice and crispy, sticky toffee buns were puffy and flavorful, and the danishes were flaky and just a little sweet. I was able to also try the buttermilk pancakes served with delicious whipped butter and nicely spongy. The bananas foster french toast was also rich and super delicious with the bruleed bananas, tasty caramel sauce, and candied pecans. The execution of this dish was great, though their plain french toast is also incredibly delicious. Overall, great place for a delicious breakfast experience with a great view. I would love to come back here for other meals based on my great experiences and reasonable prices. read more
