Chicken kyiv with village style potatoes
    Sho R.

I stopped by for a dinner on a week day. The place was not busy. The restaurant is in a calm location. There were no pedestrians. I went for an outdoor seating. The waitress was very friendly and helped to decide on my dinner items. Chicken Kyiv was my favorite item. Side veggies where really good as well. I went for village stype potatos. It was ok, may be I should have gone for a different side. Their regular fries was really good. House salad was good as well. Verenyky was mild in flavor, but still was good. I also went for a kids crepe, which was slightly on the sweeter side.

Fried chicken sandwich with roasted potatoes

Located in a former brewery so there are some weird touches like the urinals being made out of kegs. The varenyky were quite tasty. I'm not that into Paul's pelmeni and these are basically the same thing, but maybe the combination of greasiness, good seasoning, and the fried onions make it pretty solid. Fried chicken sandwich with the roasted potatoes was also a hit. I asked which style potatoes were best and our server, maybe one of the owners? recommended the roasted ones. The seasoning was pretty good, not just boring potatoes. Sandwich has a large fried chicken patty with tasty sauce and didn't leave me feeling gross after. Also comes with pickled shredded carrots and beets. There is a $2 credit card fee

This place is really cute. I didn't know it was located right by the urgent care on East wash. There is a bar inside and outdoor seating. Waiter was really friendly. We had the pelmeni, chicken Kyiv with mashed potatoes, holubtsi (stuffed cabbage) and borsh (soup). Never tried Ukrainian food. A little different but not bad. Drinks were good - had the kyiv mule & tom collins.

I put a high expectation since it's rated pretty high in Google Map. However, the main dish very disappointed me. The appetizer were all wonderful, I love the Fried cheese curds, even it's little too salty. Pelmeni and cottage cheese Mlyntsi topped with honey were perfect!!! But After having appetizer, the main dish takes too long to come. And Chicken Kyiv is too salty. The fired bread is separate with the chicken when I cut it, so it doesn't taste like a chicken Kyiv anymore. It's more like I'm eating a fried bread and a chicken separately. The worst is the stuff pepper, it's cold inside. And the ground meat taste really bad to be honest. The second reason I rate low score is the service here. I'm sitting in front of the bar. There are so many staffs walking around in front of the bar, chatting, talking, but not help me take order even I raise my hand. Because they are all focusing on chatting and didn't see me. The things I ordered is not enough for 3 people so I wanted to order more. But they didn't take my order and I have waited too long for the main dishes before, so I just decided to leave. I provided this feedback to the waiter when I get check. Hope you guys doing better in the future, but I won't come back anymore.

    Chicken baked Ukranian style

Definitely 5 stars! The menu is small, but nothing disappoints. Every dish we had was excellent. We had Varenyky for starters. Our entrees were Holubtsi and Chicken baked Ukranian style. Both dishes were wonderfully flavorful. My husband also had a cup of borscht, which was just right. For dessert, we tried the honey and Napoleon cakes. YUM! With, warm mulled wine, coffee and soda, the bill didn't even reach $80. Our server was awesome and attentive. Our dirty dishes were wisked quietly away and we were always asked if everything was to our liking. The restaurant is just the right size, not too big, or too small. It calls itself a bar and grill, but I don't think "grill" is appropriate at all. There is a bar that serves specialty drinks, tap and bottled beers, non-alcoholic items, wines and sodas. There are a number of big screen TVs, but during our time there, only the two behind the bar were on and they were showing beautiful scenes from the countryside of Ukraine. This visit commemorated our 15th anniversary and I am so happy we went there. We will be back!

This was the new restaurant of the week to try. I was meeting friends who have a comfort zone when going to restaurants so I like to get them out of that zone and and drag them to my off the beaten path restaurants. Good thing I made reservations because even though seats were open they were turning people away because of the kitchen staff shortage I heard. The place has an decor crisis because it didn't have a Ukrainian feel and more a previous sports bar feel, cold with a tall keg urinal in the mens room but still a nice space. I started with a white Ukrain that was good in a martini glass, just a White Russian basically. I ordered a cup of borsch and the chicken Kyiv that comes with a house salad, corn, choice of side, carrots and beet shreds. The borsch soup is basically beets, cabbage, potatoes and pork. I AM NO FAN of beats at all but my food adventureisam was not going to stop me from the experience of having borsch for the first time. To my amazement I actually liked it even though it was not seasoned at all. The chicken Kyiv was super crunchy on the outside with rolled up flat chicken, like slices with butter in the center that pools out when you cut into it and bland also. The mashed potatoes were very smooth and totally opposite of the other food because they were seasoned nicely and very good. Two of us commented on the side of corn being cold right out of the fridge. I didn't care for the beet/carrot shreds because I didn't care for the flavor. Overall we all enjoyed our meals, drinks and desserts which I didn't try the desserts.

    Vinegret Beet Salad

We loved trying some new things at Touch of Ukraine! Loved the mulled wine and the Vinegret (beet salad). The fried Chicken sandwich was the best tasting that I have ever had. We got the Holubtsi (stuffed cabbage) to go and loved it. My husband enjoyed the Upside Down Ukrainian Flag drink. Look forward to visiting again the next time we are in town. The service was excellent!

Mrs. T and I ventured out to Touch of Ukraine, a restaurant serving Ukrainian fare and a handful of Wisconsin appetizers and entrees. First -- the practical portion of this review: GPS has the address a few doors down from where the restaurant actually is. It is located to the left of the giant "UNION CORNERS" sign with its entrance on the left inside of the courtyard. There's a sizeable outdoor eating area, you can't miss it (unless you don't heed this part of the review and listen to your GPS instead). We started with an order of varenyky, a potato filled dumpling not unlike a pierogi but more resembling a pot sticker, which was served topped with fried onions (not the crunchy sort, for clarity) with a side of sour cream. The dumpling was just the right thickness and the potato flavor with the onions and a bit of sour cream really made me miss my grandmother's cooking. Not only was it delicious but it ticked the portion boxes for an appetizer: not too much, not too little. Mrs. T's entree was the chicken Kyiv with a house salad and a side of mashed potatoes. The House salad was well portioned and wasn't just a dull plate of iceberg lettuce. Be it from a bag or house made (admittedly I did not ask) they nailed the croutons -- light yet richly flavored. The side of mashed potatoes was a generous portion served country style (some chunkiness to it, which I often like, but I understand some others do not) -- a great companion to the chicken Kyiv itself. Also when I say generous I am probably underselling the quantity. The chicken Kyiv was served with a couple of light sides: a lightly dressed bit of sliced beets and some (strongly) ribboned, pickled carrots. The breading on the chicken was delicious (even if it was having trouble staying on the chicken a little) and it delivered on what we expected: seasoned, buttery insides. As a side note: It is a little heavier on the black pepper than our Americanized frozen iterations. My main meal was the fried chicken sandwich which was breaded Ukrainian style, topped with a chipotle aioli, and pickled red onions. I had the village style roasted potatoes as my side. The potatoes were a simple preparation of sliced roasted potatoes, served garnished with fresh rosemary. It was satisfying and familiar. [Note regarding my photo of the potatoes: I couldn't resist picking off a few of them before Mrs. T reminded me I intended to take a picture... ope!] The cut of chicken for the fried chicken sandwich was reminiscent in size of our Midwestern breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches and the cook on it was perfect. The combination of the breading, the pickling on the onion was light enough to not be the only thing you tasted but heavy enough that it added to the combination of the aioli with the fried chicken. I'd count it in my top three fried chicken sandwich experiences in the Madison era. With the appetizer and the generous portion sizes we were too full for dessert, but we will definitely be back as there's still so much more of the menu to explore.

Look at these beautiful side salads and the holiday shots of Ukrainian Vodka they brought us!

Absolutely delicious from the Mushroom Mlyntsi for our appetizer to the Napoleon cake for dessert! Our entrees were the Parmesan Crusted Flounder with roasted potatoes and the Ukrainian Delicacy Pork with the mashed potatoes. Both delicious! The garlic butter and the tartar sauce were a wonderful addition to the already delicious flounder. The Pork tenderloin was out of this world!! The marinated carrots and beets on the side were awesome. The service is extraordinary and the restaurant decore is very nice! They have a beautiful bar too! We can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu!

The food here is all top notch. The kitchen takes it time to plate all the dishes so they look amazing and the portion size is perfect for taking some home to enjoy a second time. The staff is friendly and willing to teach you how to properly say the dishes. I was amazed how fluent our server Maria was; she was very knowledgeable about the dishes and made wonderful recommendations. She made the evening delightful and told us a little about how it was growing up in southern Ukraine and learning all the langauges she can speak-- she is a real polyglot! The dishes we tried tonight included the borsch (a must-have beet and cabbage soup), holubtsi (stuffed cabbage rolls), and baked chicken Ukrainian style with shredded beets, carrots, and canned stewed peppers. By far the soup and the chicken stole the show. The chicken has a cheese sauce baked on top that melts in your mouth and the soup is prefect to warm up on a cold day. Both were flavorful, not salty, and made you remember days of homecooked meals. The cabbage rolls are not as flavorful but I still liked the simplicity of the dish. Both main dishes came with a side dish (we had the seasonal veggies of broccoli) and a salad. We saved some room to try the Napoleon cake-- a puff pastry layered with lovely soft vanilla cream and a drizzle of chocolate and blueberries on top. It is light and delicate and perfect to share (although I would have eaten the whole plate myself because it was so good). There was about 10 other dishes I wanted to try so I will be back for more of this Ukrainian food gem. Tip for parking: if you can't find parking on the Winnebago Street side (2 hr parking max until 6 pm), you can park in the UW Health's lot at the far end by the restaurant. There is handicapped parking on the Winnebage Street side.

Touch of Ukraine is a great addition to the Madison food scene! We got several items to share including the mylnskis (per the servers rec), the varenyky (dumplings), and the chicken Kyiv. We started with the dumplings and a cup of borsch. The borsch is amazing! So simple and warming. The chicken Kyiv came out next and was fried to perfection. The home style potatoes it comes with cannot be missed! I would also recommend the mylnskis to end the night on a sweet element.

What amazing food!! From the cocktails, appetizers, dinners to desserts. We started with pelmeni, vareneky and cheese blintzes. They were all good but omg the cheese blintzes were the winner!!! Ok so sorry don't remember name id the special soup of the evening but it was the favorite soup of the Ukraine and it was amazing!! Chicken Kiev and ribs were delicious! Finally the napoleon dessert was good but the honey cake was the best-- we could not stop eating it . Will be back

The pub is one large space, but it is separated into a few unique areas. One side is quintessential pub with a long bar, lots of dark woods, and a good sized dining room. The other is more of a pool hall vibe where you will find the other side of the bar, several pool tables, lots of TV's, high tops, darts, etc...We have bellied up to both sides of the bar and while I like both sides, I prefer the vibe of the pub side. They have a fairly extensive food menu with several bar/pub classics such as wings, nachos and burgers. But they also offer a good variety of sandwiches, bowls, salads, soups and even tacos. While we are normally here for the drinks, we do enjoy the cheese curds, wings and poutine! Speaking of drinks, they always have a great menu of house cocktails that is constantly updated for seasonality. I went with the Celtic Burger, which is their standard burger with added caramel iced onion, whiskey bacon jam, Irish cheddar and a garlic aioli. The burger was good and cooked well, but it was less impressive than I expected given all the goods they added to it. I was one of the only few people in here, but I did go for an 11 AM lunch.

Another first-time experience in Madison, and this spot came highly recommended if you're a true…read morewhiskey or bourbon lover, and wow it did NOT disappoint! It happened to be near the theatre we went to, so we decided to stop in and check it out. They have nearly 775 different types of whiskey to choose from, which is wild! I loved that they offer different ounce sizes so you can sample a few, and they even pair it with water so you stay hydrated while tasting (smart touch). Price ranges between ~$7.50-$20.00+. The place had a cozy, lounge-like vibe and was pretty busy, but the staff was friendly and helpful. It's first come first served for seating, just like any bar. We sampled a few whiskeys and also tried their premade espresso martini. The whiskey selection was phenomenal, the espresso martini was decent, not the best I've had (it was premade), but still enjoyable (it's made with Tito's, which isn't my favorite base, but I appreciate the fresh coffee beans they used). All in all, this place is a hidden gem. Great whiskey, friendly staff, and the perfect cozy spot to escape the rain for a while. I'll definitely be back next time to try even more from their list!

It's intimate and the drinks are fire. We stuck with the classic old fashioned and felt they were strong and well crafted - thank you for a true luxardo cherry too! We ordered at the bar but chilled in a booth. So many whiskey options!!! Service is friendly & quick!
