We were in the area for a hockey game and couldn't agree on what we wanted for dinner, then we ran into MACS. My son ordered the Loaded Baked Potato Mac, my daughter ordered the Jalapeño Popper Mac and my husband ordered the Carnitas Mac. I had a bowl of tomato soup... and a bite of everyone's Mac. My favorite was the Jalapeño Popper Mac, as a matter of fact, I still think about how good it was. The restaurant was clean and busy and the employees were very nice. Original Mac: M.A.C.S. (Macaroni And Cheese Shop) originated in the "Waterpark Capital of the World" aka Wisconsin Dells a decade ago in 2013. It has since disseminated to several other locations around the state. In addition to the classic comfort dish, M.A.C.S. also serves up melts, limited desserts, and a rotating flavor of the month mac & cheese. Like any good Wisconsinite I love cheese (& carbs) so mac & cheese is a favorite cheat meal of mine. For this visit I went with the Original Mac, which consists of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Pretty simple, but it's also topped with crispy breadcrumbs & a "toastie". The "toastie" is essentially a giant thin crouton that's crunchy and has a nice buttery flavor. Speaking of buttery flavor, the roux is thick, creamy, cheesy, and also adds a buttery taste to the macaroni noodles. I love that the top layer of the mac & cheese is perfectly crispy as it contrasts nicely with the creamy inner portion. M.A.C.S. usually serves their cheesy entrees in a cool looking skillet that does a fantastic job of keeping the food warm. I got mine to go this time, so no cool skillet, but the foil container still kept it hot. I usually feel guilty when I decide to treat myself for some as it's a little pricey for fast food ($11 for a large original is the cheapest variety). After taking my first bite that always goes away as it's totally worth the occasional indulgence. This place has the best tasting mac & cheese I've had from any restaurant and is a must try for mac & cheese lovers. Every time we've gone to Mac's, the food has been amazing! Wish we had a Mac's closer to where we lived, because I would go a lot more often if I lived in WI. We always dine in, so the mac is always served fresh in an iron skillet. The regular size is just enough for one person, so I'd suggest upgrading to the "mac daddy" size if you want leftovers. Sometimes you crave for comfort food and this is my first time at MACS, the one on the west side next to Culvers. Staffs were friendly and ample parking. They got kids, regular and mac daddy sizes. Ordered 2 regular ones: carnitas and philly both at $11 each. Fast service as they both came around 10 minutes. Very little meat like 2 oz and the macs were creamy. I heard about this place so I needed to try that Wisconsin cheese. We got the large original one and that seemed like a good amount for two people. It came with two slices of bread but were hard as a rock so not worth eating. The mac and cheese itself was good but I would say it was justifying the price. The Mac n cheese is so good here. The problem as others have mentioned is the portion size of the toppings. I agree with others that the protein isn't adequate and even the veggies now are sparse. Stopped by here with my family and my sister in law and her two kids. This is, if it wasn't obvious, a Mac and cheese restaurant. They specialize in various takes on Mac and cheese. It is in the Sun Prairie shopping complex near Costco. Convenient location with plenty of parking. The menu is easy to follow and they have pictures of every type of Mac and cheese in case you don't reference the pictures on Yelp. They have 3 different sizes of Mac and cheese. The small looks like roughly a cup, the medium looks like maybe 2 cups, and the large looks like 3 cups. In addition to Mac and cheese, they do also sell some melt sandwiches and some dessert and potato chips. Prices are pretty good when you consider the amount of food (Calories) you're paying for. Calories weren't readily apparent on the menu. I tried their seasonal item the chili Mac and cheese. Basically, it was Mac and cheese with chili, sour cream, and Fritos corn chips. The regular base Mac and cheese is very rich...so anything that is added, you just need to think about how it will compliment a very rich Mac and cheese or if it's too much. In the case of the chili option, I thought it went well. My wife ordered the Memphis which was kind of a barbecue flavored one...and I don't think that flavor went well with the Mac and cheese...I don't think rich cheese and sweet barbecue sauce pair well together. But the chili and cheese were good. Not sure the sour cream was needed with an already very rich Mac and cheese, but it was right there in the center. I ordered the large size and I could only finish about 2/3 of it before I had to tap out. Service was friendly and fast. They bring your food to your table. They are helpful with questions. I'd say if you've never tried, this is a fun place to taste for the first time. I wouldn't be eating here multiple times a week or maybe multiple times a month even, but it is very good. Just very rich. They've really found a way to make a side item into an over the top in your face entree. Lots of fun recipes to try. Next I might try the Philly cheese steak one. read more

We stopped into MACs Sunday afternoon for lunch. After placing our order the entire seating area was full but we were able to find a dirty table to sit at. While waiting for our food I watched a staff member clear off 4 tables around us but never come back with a rag to clean the table. I think a little education needs to happen with the staff on how to properly clear and clean a table. This made it clear to me why we had to wipe off our table with napkins when we sat down. The same person clearing tables brought out our food... I sure hope she washed her hands in between. We sat near the door that led out to the patio. Several people were exiting out that door which made it pretty cold while we were there. I wish people would have decided to use the double front door instead. After waiting over 20 minutes our food was brought to the table. We split the Mac's caesar salad. The salad came out with spring lettuce because of this darn romaine issue, which was fine. The salad had the classic ingredients shaved parmesan, seasoned croutons with caesar dressing and then elbow macaroni noodles. The elbow macaroni noodles in the salad is a weird touch and I didn't really care for it. I went with the original mac and my boyfriend had the mama's mac. MAC serves their mac and cheese in individual cast iron pans. Mama's mac is the original with thin sliced hot dogs on top. The mac and cheese comes out with a layer of cheddar cheese on top. We both felt that the mac and cheese didn't really have any flavor? I've probably eaten at MACs a handful of times and this visit doesn't really stand out to me. I was telling my boyfriend how much I liked it before we ate but MAC didn't really live up to the hype this day. Cleanliness is huge for me & was lacking majorly Sunday afternoon. First timer Asked for suggestions upon entry. After a little debate the decisions were made. Order one was the "Hangover Mac" without the hotdogs. Oddly enough this was rather tasty with its seemingly never ending mix of toppings. But I feel there would be some room for improvement. For example. Changing out the hash browns for a corned beef hash. And Tabasco rather than the sriracha. Nevertheless really tasty option for the first time. The other was a little lackluster. This is the second time I've gone here and both experiences were good. Staff are friendly, it's a well designed shop in a good area that has lots of other things to do (such as spas), there's plenty of parking, and there's outside seating which is nice. The Apple Bacon Bleu Salad is always fresh and tasty plus I've tried the Popeye, Philly, and Loaded Baked Potato Macs which were all wonderful. The meats are lean as well as cooked well and the Loaded Baked Potato Mac truly does taste like you just ordered a big, cheesy, gourmet baked potato from a restaurant. PRO TIP: Each skillet comes with two toasted bread pieces called 'toasties' you can order a bowl full as a side for an additional $1.50. The crunch of the bread truly compliments this comfort dish. I ordered the Lobster Mac, the specialty option they currently have available. This was noticeably pricier than the other options, but I decided to dive in anyways because of my love for anything seafood. I thought it was great! It had big CHUNKS of lobster inside and was served with lemon wedges to top it off. My companion ordered the Buffalo Chicken Mac and removed the blue cheese and added ranch. Just how he likes it. That's right, they are fully customizable also! We love MACS, their food is reliably good and reasonably priced for the portions. I ate here 3 years ago and have tried to find other places to try and top the mac and cheese here and could not. Recently went back and still deem it as the best place for mac and cheese as they have many variations. Ordered up the #4 Popeye and when I received my meal, the center was cold. Not only was it cold, the dish lacked spinach, onions and mushrooms within the Mac and cheese. One of the staff had asked how my meal was and I commented how none of the veggies were mixed in the dish as it has been in the past. He told me they only place the veggies on top now so not to make a mistake. I will say it would have been fine had there been plenty of the spinach, onions and mushrooms on top, but the three spinach leaves and a baby's handful of mushrooms and onions, doesn't balance out the dish. Even though we've taken our family to this restaurant in the past, we won't anymore. I don't care to spend money and not have a nice balance between the veggies and mac and cheese. WoW!!! Saw this new place, and though we would give it a try. How hard can it be to choose between 12 menu items...pretty damn hard once you start reading them--you will want one of each !!! We finally settled on"Cheeseburger Mac (actually taste like a Big Mac but better.) , "Jalapeño Popper" (has a kick to it), and the "Taco Mac" (son ate it to quick so I didn't get a taste-but it must have been good for how fast it went down). All were delicious. I don't think it really matters what you get, it's all going to be good. Even the table next to us were ranting how good it was. Not sure what all was delivered to the table, but I do know they were talking mostly of the "Memphis Mac" that one ordered. Portions come in three sizes. They have the serving dish size on counter for viewing. We all did the mac daddy size because it does't look that big. It's more then plenty. The middle size would have been good enough. After they load it, it's holding more then it looks. The establishment is small with limited seating (about 15-20 tables). Very clean (then it should be, it's new) and staff is on top of things. They are quick to clean off unused tables. I was impressed with the staff in how the cleared tables. They didn't just push it from the table, to the chairs, to the floor. We stopped on our way back home to Chicago after some cave exploring at Cave of the Mounds. Great spot to grab a quick cheesy bite. We ordered for pick up and ended up dining at their outdoor dining area. We ordered a veggie Mac and cheese, Memphis Mac and cheese, Buffalo Mac and cheese and a Mac Caesar salad. Everyone really enjoyed their orders. Very tasty and flavorful! Portions were maybe on the smaller end for the regular size. The cheese used was very good and plentiful!
