I've had mixed feelings about On the Way in the past--mostly just because I went to high school with a couple of people who used to work here--but right now I guess I feel mostly positive. My dad and my fiancée's mother still live in the area, and I guess they've become regulars. They've taken me along a couple of times to their weekly breakfast when I've been in the area. Everything on the menu is well made and the service is just outstanding. The homemade strawberry jam is a fantastic extra touch. The regular server is always very friendly and isn't afraid to strike up a conversation with you. There's always plenty of space, so it's usually easy to find a table. The rooms in the back are best for a little bit of extra privacy. read more

The waitress was friendly. But that didn't help with the fact that it took over an hour to get our food. We were running out of time and we were getting impatient. By the time we got it we had 10 minutes to eat and get out. Overall the food was decent. My husband says the gravy was a little too "floury". My 12 year old said my scrambled eggs are better (she didn't realize she needed to order them with cheese. lol. So definitely not the restaurants fault). My 5 year old was not a fan of his stuffed apple French toast. I'm not sure what he was expecting. It looked good. But he really liked the bacon. We came in as a group of four for breakfast and unfortunately had a really disappointing experience. From the start, the service felt unwelcoming. Our waitress had a noticeably negative attitude and was short with us when we asked simple questions. For example, when I asked if fries came with my BBQ pulled sandwich, she responded in a way that felt dismissive rather than helpful. Throughout the meal, there was little to no check-in to see how things were going, and we had to ask just to get the bill. It felt like we were an inconvenience rather than customers. On top of that, the food itself was not good. All four of us were unhappy with our meals, which made the overall experience even worse. I don't usually leave negative reviews, but this visit stood out for the wrong reasons. I hope the restaurant can improve both service and food quality in the future. read more

it was awful.. our waitress was extremely, extremely rude I've honestly never been talked to like that at a restaurant before in my life. My food was cold, the omelette my boyfriend got was extremely salty, too salty to eat, agian I'm astonished at the way I was spoken to by this waitress it was crazy, im shocked she is still hired. Went around 1pm, clean and quiet. Really friendly staff. Food was great and there was plenty of it. Definitely recommend checking it out.

Ambiance was good. Cafe was clean. waitress was good but food delivery was poor. At least 5 customers came in after us, orders taken, food delivered and most left before we received our food. The cook prepares orders as they see fit not how they were received. Our order was simple...two eggs, American fries, bacon and toast. Food was good but not great. Although we had to go a little Out of the way to get here, my husband & I stopped here for breakfast and had a wonderful experience. Cute restaurant, very clean, fun decorations, family run - even had the owner's adorable toddler grandson walking around smiling at customers. Service was perfect, food was very good, very reasonable prices - just couldn't ask for more. I travel for work all over, and rarely write reviews but had to give a shout out to this little gem. Stopped here for breakfast with the family, and although they were pretty busy, the food was good and the service was excellent. I had the eggs Benedict, which was tasty...good, but not quite great. My son had the chocolate chip waffles, which he really enjoyed. My wife had some eggs and toast, which she also enjoyed. I would have to say a 3 for the food, and a 4 for the service. The food came pretty quickly, and the waitress did an excellent job of keeping our coffees full. We will be back! read more

(visited April 2011) Consists of two rooms, one with counter seating for 12, tables for another 16+, back room seating for another dozenish. Nothing fancy - mostly regulars but friendly ppl. Server was very friendly, prompt, and courteous - pricing was as expected. Breakfast menu offers "run-of the mill" fare with a few twists. Cost of my meal was about $8 + tip and consisted of american fries, 2x sausage patties, 2x wheat toast, 2x over-easy eggs, large o.j. - plus a small portion of homemade straw jam. Food tasted as expected, not spectacular, but solid - if you screw up breakfast then in my book, it's time to retire your spatula. Sausage had decent flavor, lightly toasted/lightly buttered bread, potatoes were crisp fresh cut potatoes, and the eggs were a perfect over-easy. The place was busy during our visit, would say 75% of the seats were taken. It was about a 15 min wait from the time our order was placed to first forkful. My father, who can be tough to please, ordered the same meal, and he was quite content. Really nothing extra special about this place - but if you're after real people and real food then this place has it. Also I like to support the mom & pop grub spots every once and a while - unlike the corporate behemoths they provide a bit of character to the foodie landscape. Me and my wife just had the single worst experience of our lives at this hometown dive. We sat in the back room and were promptly greeted and our drink order was taken, and upon receiving our drinks we were prompted for a food order, we asked for a couple for minutes. About the time our waitress walked away my wife discovered her Milk was slightly above room temp. We then proceeded to spend the next 25 minutes waiting for our server to return, when she severed the table across from us there food and then turned around and once again disappeared we got up and walked out the door. If your not a local go somewhere else, if your not from there you will get skipped over. Locals walks in table gets cleaned they get their drinks and they just keep on walking by you. When you finally get service your order is not correct. I brought it to there attention and the comment was made that oh maybe I wrote it down wrong and nothing else was done to correct it. This is a decent little breakfast spot. It gets very busy on the weekends so don't go in expecting a quick meal. We went on a Friday morning and again on a Sunday morning, each stop took at least an hour. The food was good although I would recommend avoiding the hash browns they were very greasy and the gravy is straight out of a packet nothing special about it. We stopped here for lunch in the middle of a long bike ride north from Madison. This was the perfect menu to refuel for the next 40 miles. We all had different omelets, and each was delicious. We received prompt service, but we did arrive about 45 minutes before they closed on a Monday afternoon. I plan to go back on future rides. read more

On the way cafe is simply amazing. They have the best fish fry I have ever had. So if you like fish, go there. Burgers and breakfast are delicious also . No need to get dressed up either. Go comfortable and eat lots. read more
