I was so excited to try this place once it opened a couple of years ago since kouign amanns are my favorite pastries by far. I've visited their brick and mortar store a couple of times and also gotten their baked goods at the Dane county farmers market a few times as well, and I've gotta say that their kouign amanns are the best around town. I like their seasonal fruit galettes as well--I've had the blueberry one enjoyed it. As far as their cardamon bun though, it's a little dry and more doughy. Not really what I was expecting but still with a strong cardamon flavor. I would definitely come back for their kouign amanns and their seasonal galette if I'm feeling up for it! read more

Visited Far Breton Bakery for the first time for an early morning snack. I don't normally commute to the east side, but was especially excited to check it out. The bakery is a cute, small, and homey space that's next to a sit in cafe / diner. I got the chocolate pain and a spiced sugar apple pastry. Both tasted good and priced at $5 a piece. The chocolate pain tasted surprisingly savory (due to being a bit salty). The staff were friendly and polite. Overall, would return! read more

Really really good breakfast pastries. Not many dessert pastries but I loved the chocolate croissant with chocolate dough. It was a little savory which was wonderful for me. Unassuming on the outside but with some delicious pastries inside! The pastries here are definitely on the denser side but delicious nonetheless - we tried both savory and sweet. Their three cheese quiche was particularly incredible. The noir croissant - chocolate pastry dough and filling - was delicious but a bit more dense than I prefer. Their savory and sweet danishes - pesto cream cheese and apple crumble were both fantastic. The kouign amann was amazing - super buttery and perfectly caramelized. If you haven't had a chance to check this place out yet, what are you waiting for!? They have the most amazing selection of bakery you'll find in this neighborhood, and they serve it up with a smile! They're talk you through each interesting item and the plethora of flavors available, and sometimes they'll even let you have a taste if you're on the fence! When I pulled up one of the employees came out and held the door for the woman leaving. So sweet (no pun intended)! Not only did I get delicious baked goods, but I also received a ton of compliments from the staff, and they really made me feel at home in the 5 short minutes I spent there. First, the food. Overrated. Too doughy and dense, including croissants and everything else. Uneven quality. Sometimes sicky sweet; sometimes less so. Not reliable. Second, the owner. Marie is one nasty lady. I was a big fan for a while. One day a sweet bun was over-the-top glazed with sugar, unlike on other days. I just wanted to ask Marie if she had changed the recipe permanently---or it was just a one off. I asked one of her clerks if she was on site and was told that she was in her office in the back hall. I asked if it would be OK to speak to her and was told YES. When I went back to her office, she was on the phone and frowned at me. I left and sent an email later, saying sorry to interrupt and why I wanted to speak with her. She replied, "Don't come back here. My clerks told me you would not take NO for an answer when you said you wanted to see me." I explained that the clerk was lying and probably out of fear of Marie's wrath. Fast-forward a year or so to a farmers' market, where Marie showed up. I foolishly thought we could reconcile and approached her table when no customers were around. "Marie, did you finally figure out that your clerks didn't tell you the truth about me?" She retaliated with an angry assertion that she had heard everything, so knew they were honest. She couldn't hear from back in her office, and why she also would lie about this is unclear and unkind. I left in tears. Never try to reconcile with a truly nasty person. You can buy her sweets, but she is a sourpuss of a person. read more

Hands down the best bakery in Madison. From sweet to savory, there is no better. Open limited hours and strong demand, expect some items to be sold out later in the day. Perhaps an off day but, while the pastries tried looked nice, the products textures and tastes were inconsistent with French pastry. Croissants, pain au chocolate, galette, and sugar cinnamon bun were all heavy with American biscuit bread texture rather than French pastry flaky lightness. Overly salty across the board. Pastries were also smaller than typical which made the miss in quality that much more regrettable, particularly considering the confident pricing. If I pretended that I was eating American bread, everything was edible but would not encourage a repeat visit. read more

Far Breton Bakery has the most mouth watering pastries in Madison yet!! We are so lucky to have this talented baker in Madison. Today we purchased all the items pictured. It's so tempting to eat some on the way home, when better though enjoyed with coffee. The morning buns are 4/$10, and hold up very well in the freezer well if you want to treat yourself once a week with one batch. This Sunday morning pick up is one of three ways to get the goodies. Schedule is 8:30 am every Sunday until she sells out or 12:30 pm, whichever comes sooner. Market Pantry also does delivery, on Thursdays. The pastries are baked same day. Her website also has a way to order for pick-up on Fridays. It would be a treat to come here anytime, but it's always extra special to bring visitors in town here. I've brought folks from Chicago sand Berkeley to visit and both agreed these baked goods rival their favorite local pastry havens. read more

Interesting pastries, some times a little off the mark, sometimes excellent. The owner now has a seating area and some cafe food items. My husband and I were in Madison for the weekend and our teen wanted real French pastry so on the way home we made sure to stop. Yelp led us to this tiny French outpost - it is very small and extremely hard to find but worth it. Service was great - we were helped right away. By 10am they were sold out of most of their croissants and pan au chocolat, but we were able to snag the few that were left. We didn't see tarts or fancy pastry - impression we got was they are known for breads. The croissant and pan au chocolat made our family back home very happy - light flaky crust but it's best eaten immediately. The shop is very small and simple - this isn't a cafe bakery so expect to order and pickup to go. read more

I admit I came to this bakery with high expectations, but what I did not consider was how much customer service would play into diminishing them to the point that I don't think I will ever go to this bakery again. I asked for the "Large Sampler Pack" from it's website. I was told they do not do that, it's not something they do. When I pointed to the item on my phone, the actual item from their own website I was told that they'd have to talk to someone. It took so long to get someone to tell me they do not honor their advertised items that I was running out of time. Stopping for the first time on my way to work was, admittedly, a misstep...Can't fault anyone for that. Anywho, I ordered the equivalent of the sampler I had found on the website. The items were dumped into a paper bag, not a box as advertised on their website, seriously, and I took them to my coworkers for an especially important day at work. Well, most of the items were as ordered, cardomom rubbed off on several of the other croissants, the pain au chocolat was oddly savory apart from the chocolate inside. The Kouign Amann was very nice. I have been a customer for several years--since she tabled at the Farmers Market--and used to think her goods were amazing. Quality noticeably declined this past summer, but I was excited when she opened a storefront on the thought that the product would be better when customers could see it again. Nope. The morning buns were still small and too dense and literally everything else ranged from slightly over baked to outright (and visibly) burned. I'm lazy. Unless I find something so outstanding or so terrible, I don't bother to write a review. After having some of Far Breton Bakery's pastries, I'm going to make things harder for myself by saying that they are the very best Breton pastries I've had, including those I ate while visiting the cities of Brittany. They are the only things that could get me out of bed at 8 am on a Saturday or Sunday morning to make sure I'm in line when the bakery opens at 9 am. They are that good. Sofia (of Sofia's Bakery) had delicious pastries. Lazy Janes has great scones. Every single thing Marie sells is delicious. The space is cozy; a work in progress. But the pastries are delicious, from the flaky, dark chocolate filled pain au chocolat to the kouign-amann (pronounced queen-ahman). Here's what The Food Network had to say about the pastry: It's similar to a croissant in that it is made by layering butter and dough and then folding, rolling and repeating. But it is both denser and more caramelized. "The kouign amann has the addition of sugar sprinkled between the layers; in the oven, the butter-sugar mixture creates pockets of sweetness in the pastry's soft, moist center, and a crispy caramel-like coating on the burnished exterior," Eater notes. Although the process of making the pastry is similar -- layering "laminated dough" to maximize flaky deliciousness -- the dough used to make a kouign amann is different. Croissant dough contains milk and butter, but kouign amann dough does not. It is, rather, a "simple mixture of yeast, flour, salt, and water, with no fat or sweetener," according to Eater. Kouign amann means "butter cake" in Breton, a Celtic language spoken in Brittany. That and the fact that it is so dense, sweet, salty and wonderfully buttery should make clear that it's no diet food. How many calories in Far Breton's Bakery's pastries? How much do they cost? The prices are posted but I didn't even glance at them. When you have the opportunity to get the very best of something for under $10 you are getting a bargain. I write this review knowing that when Marie finishes the space, she should be able to supply the many new customers that her work deserves. Far Breton Bakery is such a treasure to have on the Northside of Madison! I love the popup nature of it...the scarcity of being able to get it only Friday-Sunday mornings in various locations (Fridays you can pickup advance online orders at Feed, Saturdays their little trailer is parked at the entrance to Maple Bluff, and Sundays in the summertime they are at the Northside Farmer's Market). My absolute favorite are the Kouign Amann--soft, buttery, and yeasty sweet roll on the inside, a perfectly baked crisp crust and candied/caramelized glaze on the outside. They nailed the flavors and textures on this one. Honestly one of the best pastries I have ever had in my life. I have also tried the croissant noir, the regular croissant, the pain au chocolat, meyer lemon bar, spiced sugar bun, and some other random treats. Some of the best baked goods and pastries I have never had! Her baked goods have the most perfect texture and balance that I have ever seen in pastries i.e. None of the elements or ingredients overpower any of the others, it's perfectly balanced and consistent. And there is such a diverse bill of fare, you have your normal pastries such as cinnamon rolls, morning rolls etc, But then also savory galettes and chocolate filled croissants And some of the challah I have ever had.
