Ugh, seedy, small, simple, sleazy, and slimy. First and last time coming to this place. Went with friends to see a show. It started with an over exaggerated cover and watered down drinks. The staff is less than knowledgeable about drinks and mixes, and don't make it up in professionalism, looks, or quips. The shows are decent, unpolished and a bit dated - much a sedimentary Rock. Came here on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday to see the Barbra Seville drag show. SO. MUCH. FUN. I had the time of my life getting sh*tfaced, shoving dollar bills down shirts, and singing along to all my favorite guilty pleasure pop songs. I've been here a few times for benefit shows and a few times in for drinks when they've been kind enough to let us use their parking lot for charity car washes. So much fun. Bleh. Most of us have ventured to the rock at some point in time. It has always been quite awful, but I had some hope after new ownership took over and renovated the place. It is always sad to see a place that has potential, be complete crap. Upon walking in we were greeted by a small room used as a bar area, with random bar tables along the side. And whales. And scary looking people. And a DJ...well...kinda...he was playing music from a computer..you know...like you would so at home. We ordered two beers and sat down. Why not give it a chance, right? By far THE BEST BAR IN PHOENIX I had heard great things about this place and I am so disappointed that I didn't get the chance to go to this bar until 1.5 years of living in Phoenix. My friend and I decided to attend on Friday night for a night of drinks and karaoke. When we first arrived we were greeted by an awesome staff and explained that the show wasn't starting until 10pm (we arrived at 8:30) We were immediately asked if we wanted a table and were attended at the bar. The bartender was attentive and AMAZING;) ... Since they knew it was my friends birthday they made sure we were well taken care of, we attended the show and sang a couple of songs. It appears Karaoke Friday's and Labor Day weekends don't mix. After our snafu with Halo Halo Kitchen (see the review if you like), we scrambled to find a venue also hosting a Friday night Karaoke. The Rock and two other bars made the finals, and The Rock, clearly, was our final choice. We called Thursday (knowing our luck) to verify that Karaoke Friday was indeed on for the weekend. Affirmative. Well, great! We made our arrangements and updated the event page. After dinner, we made our way over and found the cozy bar with to be full and with a group at one table. We ordered drinks, and chatted. And chatted. And then realized it was already 9:30 (Karaoke starts at 9!). After several inquiries with the bar staff, it seems the host was a no show. Not cool. I realize the bar staff was (or claimed to be) irritated by this as well, but, alas, one no show is a representation of the business for me. Still, we made do, adaptable group that we are! We played darts (for free!) and the ended up joining the crowd for the Barbra Seville Girlie Show. There was a $3 cover and, once we sat down, a full house, though a few more faces trickled in as the night progressed. It was fun. The Queens were engaging and entertaining. Barbra makes an AWESOME Bette Midler. The also featured Roman Holiday which, as a male dancer/lip syncer, added an unfamiliar touch to the show. Drinks (the two I had) were very fair for the price (1 Long Island Iced Tea (karaoke night special) + 1 Salty Chihuahua = $9). The bar staff were friendly and attentive and ready to answer all our questions about drinks and karaoke. All in all, had karaoke not been a flop, I think I'd give The Rock four stars. It is definitely much more a bar, than say Stacy's, so if you want to dance, this isn't the spot for you; but if you want to hang, then here (or maybe R Lounge) would be a good choice. read more

18 of us girls went to the Rock last Saturday and OH WOW!! What a fabulous time!! We went on drag night and saw the Barbra Seville show plus a lot of other performers. Sorry, I cant recall all their names, because I was drinking and dancing! The performers were VERY entertaining. Not only did they dance and sing, but they told jokes! Dirty jokes! We loved every minute of it! The service was excellent. Never had an empty glass. The bathroom was pretty clean for a bar. Plenty of parking in the lot. Remember to tip the performers. These drag queens really get into it and certainly know how to entertain a crowd! Total fan of this place! I will definitely go back! read more

Ok so, karaoke in the what looks like and feels like a micro bar. Walk ten steps through it and you're in a low ceiling, much larger room with a drag queen show? Totally throws off you're buzz... It's much larger than it appears from the outside however, with the low ceiling, loud as hell acoustic in both rooms it's closterphobic as all hell. Drinks are decently priced and stronger than I expected. Worth it there... Service was quick enough for the amount of people there. Another thing that threw me off was the age groups, yes "groups" of the crowd. From probably just turned 21 to omg, is that someones grandma? Hey! Everyone's entitled to a bit of fun! Great fun dive bar. I was there for Bearacudda and it was tons of fun. Staff is friendly, crowd is friendly and they also have decent drag shows. They do accept credit cards and have a juke box. Bathrooms are small so during busy evenings with lots of peeps, you will be in line and your kidneys will float. Karaoke night is kind of lame though seemed like same old folks there specifically for karaoke. read more

After suffering through some lame shows in Arizona, we finally found a show that is as good or better than the ones we were used to in Dallas. The Barbra Seville show at the rock was the most fun we have had in a show. Never seen a queen as funny and quick as Barbara. The costumes were all nice, the show was only THREE DOLLARS and it started on the dot. (We almost missed it because we were being seated as she went on stage!) A group of us girls decided we wanted to do something different one night, so we ended up at The Rock for the Barbara Seville drag show. None of us had been to a drag show before so we didn't really know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised with what we got. I really like this bar and have come many times over the years for karaoke and fun drag shows. Based on these past experiences I would give this place a five. Based on my recent experience, though, I'm giving it a two. I came for karaoke with friends. Brandon the DJ is charismatic, adorable, and will give you all the hugs you want, but he does not maintain any order in the song rotation. The were only a few people singing, but my friend waited hours for her name to come up because Brandon let the same few people sing again and again. I got to sing pretty early on, but only got one song. He made excuses every time, and kept telling us we were next, but kept us waiting. I've been to other karaoke nights where the DJ says he'll put you up more frequently if you give a big tip. If that's the game, at least you know how to play it. Brandon states no rules, though. He just keeps the excuses coming. I'm sad. I really like The Rock and I really want to come here for karaoke, but my $30 bar tab only got me one song over the course of the night, and that's just not right. If you just want to drink and meet awesome people, this is a great place. If you enjoy singing, try a different place. read more

I'm basing my review on two trips over the last year for a special event known as Bearracuda... which has been a spectacular big mess of fun each time I've attended. The Rock - I love you. The bartenders and cocktail servers are so sweet and friendly and the drink prices are AMAZING ($3.50 long island iced teas? Yes please!). They treated us so wonderfully for my sister's bachelorette party - we went and saw the Barbra Seville show with Celia Putty, Diva, and more! We had the best time. The new owners of The Rock could easily change their new bar's name to The Diamond as the refining that this rock has went through really shines through in every new element. The Rock which was once more like a dark dreary cave has had more than a fresh coat of paint. Few costs were spared in this head to toe makeover. The new ceiling tin tiles open up the lighting completely and are graced with new contemporary hugger style ceiling fans. Gone are the painted styrofoam "rock walls" replaced by sleekly stained diagonally fixed wood. Your 6 inch stilettos are now happily welcome as all of the warped break your neck in heels wood flooring is gone, replaced by a beautiful slate that really compliments all of the new glam. Holy square footage is all you can say these days at the shiny new Rock as the new owners found footage in this place that others would have been scared to look. They have switched things around in terms of who is pouring when which I think is a pure delight and is yet another step away from the dank rock of days gone by. So if you haven't been to The Rock which was formerly called "the" dive gay bar THEN you should really check out the shiny ne w The Rock because it will quickly become one of "THE" hottest-cool places on 7th ave for gay cocktails! read more

While their drinks are over-priced ($5 a drink), this place makes for a great time. I wanted to take my friends to have a gay ol' time. We went to see the Barbra Seville show on a Saturday night. This was NOT disappointing. For just a $3 cover we got to see incredibly talented drag queens. The show goes on for around 2 hours and is packed with quality entertainment. I had no idea Phoenix was such a hotbed of talented drag stars! Barbra Seville herself is not only a great drag queen, but a riotous comedian. Bring lots of dollar bills to hand to the queens as they come through the crowd! Also, reserve a table ahead of time because there was standing room only. Great for parties and celebrating. They also have karaoke and darts. There's a lot going on in this small bar, but it's really fun and filled with the nicest bartenders and entertainers you'll meet. I was trying to find a way for my very sick 5yr old to see fireworks tonight. I pulled into your very empty parking lot and drove as far away from the entrance as I could. One of your guys told me that they couldn't allow me to "camp out" there and watch the fireworks. I just wanted to pull in, watch them, and get him back home as quickly as possible. I threw a bachelorette party for my friend and she wanted The Rock to be the venue. I had to idea what to expect. I called and made reservations for the group beforehand and paid the "bachelorette" price of $18/person for the Friday night Barbara Seville show. WOW! This was literally a life changing experience for me (can't speak for the others). Barbara and has troupe performed music (lip synced but they really BROUGHT IT!) as well as told jokes and shmoozed around the room, expressing friendliness and panache at all times. We were ordering drinks from 930-close. They had our table ready, up front and although I don't think the drinks were the best, the waiter/drink server was extremely attentive and friendly (Matt?). All the parties received extra attention, but I was fortunate to be called up on stage to spin the wheel for free drinks for our table! I felt kinda starstruck standing next to Barbara! needless to say, our whole group had an AMAZING time! From the moment we came in until we left, we all received exemplary service. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. I like that there is a smoking patio. My ONLY complaint is the restroom situation. Only ONE toilet per room (2 total). I almost peed my pants waiting! Lol! Please fix this, your establishment is a hidden gem in my opinion. I would love to come back! tip for ladies: stick with your group and always have a DD or your transportation needs worked out in advance. There are shady people in this neighborhood and I personally saw one girl try to get a ride from a stranger. We waited til her uber ride arrived. Also, a stranger almost lured one of my inebriated friends away from the club. It's cool spot. Came here once. There's a patio for the smokers, parking lot, drinks are strong :-) only miller light on tap but carry other bottled beers. Bar tender Wed night was a cool guy. The good: This place has a very mixed crowd of straights and gays on a Saturday drag show night. Good, friendly atmosphere. Nice people working there, too. Seems to have cheap drinks for those who drink and most do. The bad: I love drag. I am a huge fan and have seen many shows here and overseas, but this show was such a disappointment. If you call walking thru the audience, shaking a little and grabbing dollars from between people's fingers "entertainment" so be it. I don't. Two of the performers--the primary one being the "star" of the show Barbra Seville--has been doing this for forever I gathered, and she seems somewhat bored with it all and just going thru the motions. A couple of performers, Phaedra the sexy vixen, and a redheaded gal singing a song about snatch were good. At least they are trying to entertain us. Would I go back? Maybe...but only in the hopes that I caught them on an off night. There needs to be more snappy, bitchy, funny comebacks, more snappy patter and more of a real show instead of some amateur hour that The Barbra Seville Show is trying to get away with and does apparently in Phoenix. Maybe I will try another drag show there in the future to see if it's any better. But for a $3 to get in, $3 to sit at a table which you should do or you stand next to a wall for almost 2 hours, this show might be worth it to you. At least the price is good. read more

From the owner to the bar-backs, everyone here is inviting and makes you feel welcome. I met the owner on my very first visit. He remembered my name on every visit after. The drink prices are phenomenal especially at 2-4-1 happy hour. And they aren't afraid to make a good stiff drink! The drag shows are always entertaining and the karaoke DJ always takes care of us. And don't forget about the monthly alternatives they offer , like Bearacuda! If you are looking for a club, go somewhere else. But if you are looking for a great time, hit this place up! Only been here once and it was on a Saturday afternoon. I came because I had gotten lunch nearby and there aren't a lot of bars in the area. I knew it was a gay bar and I had just planned to sit at the bar and sip some cheap drinks with a friend of mine. A few minutes later we ended up in an intense dart tournament with some regulars.
