I was looking for a karaoke spot and noticed the rock had karaoke every night. It was a Monday night and thought it might be dead and didn't think to look to see that there might be special karaoke nights. Walked in and noticed a number of people wearing bondage dog masks. Ok -- then karaoke started and everyone's names were preceeded by "pup" -- the host said it was kinki-oke. By the time we scanned the QR code and found a song it was already hours long -- we went out into the main part of the fairly small bar area and got a drink but then ended up leaving because it was going to be way too long -- plus we didn't really fit the theme -- oh well, the karaoke looked good -- there is a stage (I don't like when everyone sits at their seats) -- so maybe I will be back on a different night, when I check the theme, haha. read more

I've been coming here on the weekends for karaoke lately, and it's one of my favorite gay bars in the area. The drinks are cheap and very strong, one to two will be enough for the average person to have a good time I feel. Karaoke is on Friday and the weekends and happens in a side room in front of an audience. Make sure to get there around 10 so that you don't have to wait in a long queue if you're not planning to stay late! I've been to just about every place on Melrose except The Rock, and I see what I was missing! This is a real cute dive. Something about the generous neon lighting inside will make you feel like a tough guy, but in reality folks are gathering to either watch drag or sing karaoke. Both are fun to watch! During my stay in Central Phoenix, I wanted to visit as many gay bars as I could. I really liked that this bar was on the same street as other bars. I made a quick stop here for a couple of Angry Orchards. While I was there, it was fairly quiet with people inside and on the patio. It was also nice that there was a pretty good amount of parking. This place is within walking distance to Filibertos Mexican Food just incase you need some carbs after the bar. For a chill vibe, I am glad I was able to visit during my stay. read more

I love it here! Come me and my partner walked in around 3 in the afternoon it was great! We where greeted by the bartender who was very very nice and also greeted by some guests sitting at the bar so as soon as we walked in we felt very welcomed. We ordered 2 drinks vodka and red bull and Tito's and sprite. The drinks where delicious as we buy our drinks he then tells us it is buy one get one free!!! Whaaaaaaaaat yass even better! We sat for about 2 hours had our 2 drinks listened to great tunes. The bartender was so nice and gave us both a free shot! We made sure to tip him good for his kindness to us from the very beginning of walking in which is very hard to come by now and days. We will definitely be going back! We were a lil early and learned that the well drinks were buy one get one free before 8 and boy oh boy did we take advantage of that, well maybe I did haha The show was amazing, had such fun time, I love it when I can look around the room and see all my friends laughing and having a good time and knowing like me, they are really enjoyed the night! This place is 'the' dive gay bar in town.. there was some horrid karaoke going on in the front and some incoherent benefit show going on in the back.. the patio seemed nice enough but not a soul out there 'cept 4 drag queens smoking. So, the Rock is a interesting little bar. It's a small bar that has a show room and a patio and galley style bar We recently had a pageant at the bar and the staff is very helpful. I have judged pageants and help with different shows at the bar. I have always found it very easy to work with the staff and DJ. Which isn't always the case with other venues. The dressing room is quite large in comparison to other venues. The crowd is always a great group. I would definitely recommend this bar especially if you're interested in seeing the show. The only small issue I had was the bar staff didn't know how to make either one of my drinks old fashion and a gimlit. Which wasn't a big deal, I let the bartender choose my drink and it was very good. So, go out and enjoy yourself! Barbra Seville has a show there and she is very entertaining and makes her show fun.. read more

Drinks are good.....drag shows routinely run late if youre wanting karaoke....and if you come here for karaoke, they will let you sing once...after that its a "pay to play" type situation and if the hosts dont like you for whatever reason, no matter how juvenile dont expect to sing at all.....the "hosts" dont know how to properly run a rotation and will only properly put in your songs to sing if you tip them and they make that decision based on hiw much you tip.....you need to earn a tip and this is definitely not the way to earn it. read more

This bar had shit service. We were told to sit anywhere that is free, I sat at a table and a drag queen who was sitting with others got up to tell me the table was taken. I got up to apologize and she just waved me on. She was spotted at multiple tables except the one I wanted. Nobody ended up sitting at that table. I think the service here is shit, the friendliness of the bar is shit and I'd rather be at some hole in the wall straight bar. Shame on all these poor Phoenix bars. I'll stay in vegas! read more

I've only been here on the weekend, and in all honesty when I've had too many; but it has always been a fun experience. The Rock is in the eclectic Melrose district and is adorned with friendly rainbow flags out front. On the weekends catch the funny and talented drag performers in their extended room, and express your own inner diva with karaoke in the main room. Review would be a five but the waiter was awful. 9 girls expecting to get a buzz on and were only served 2 drinks the whole night. Our table was supposed to get free bacholette party shots but I won't know if I was charged or not until I check my bank account. Never received final tab.Bathroom was problem number two. Had to hold it all night. Always a slow line that I didn't have the patience to wait in. We had a GREAT TABLE FRONT AND CENTER 21st birthday girl and Bachlorette. The ladies gave us lots of attention. Only one or two of our gals had ever been to a drag show so they loved our big surprise. Each of the entertainers had their niche was was enjoyable. OK so I am a fan of the gay bars. Shocked? Didn't think so. I also like karaoke. Shocked now? I leave nothing to surprise. I love this bar. The patrons tend to choose awful songs for karaoke but somehow it works out as charming here. Everyone is super gracious and friendly; very welcoming to new singers. The patio is terrific. Roomy, friendly and plenty of seating for the smokers and always someone to light up your smoke. The drinks are reasonable and well poured and the bartenders are good people. One star for the AWESOME service (especially the cute bartender in the Boy Scout uniform), one star for the really dedicated karaoke MC, one star for the reasonably-priced drinks, one star for the PHENOMENAL dedication to giving back to the community, and one star for the big patio. Negative five billion for the snarky bitches who thought they owned the place on a Saturday night. We brought a huge party, we kept the bartenders busy, and all they could do was insult us while they nursed a single beer all night. And the bartenders gave no indication that we were a welcome addition. Gay guys not welcome at a gay bar? No thank you. The place was DEAD on a Saturday night, except for the territorial regular jerks. Despite the great service, the bartenders really didn't make us feel welcome. Seriously sooo much fun! I went to the rock for the first time this past Saturday for a baccalaureate party. I had SUCH a blast! The drag queens looked amazing and were soooo funny! Loved how much they interacted with the audience. Be sure to bring some dollar bills with you to tip them ;) The wait staff was pretty quick and attentive even with a packed house. Went to the Barbara Seville Show and it was AMAZING. My boyfriend got felt up by a drag queen and he said it was the most amazing birthday yet. Tips: - Reserve tables over the phone - Get there 20-30 mins early to get drinks and chill. - Bring $20-30 in single bills to give to the ladies when they perform. It's fabulous and necessary. I just had to walk out of this place. Amazing atmosphere! Amazing bartender! My friend and I were super excited for Karaoke, but we were left waiting almost an hour past the advertised time. I almost didn't mind, but then when the drag queen host showed up I saw her publicly berate customers for singing when their song played. I don't know he details, but I know I am absolutely disgusted by the behavior I witnessed by that drag host and I hope management sees this so if I ever return I have a better experience. read more

I really like this place. Ive been to many gay bars in this valley, and this one has truly the nicest staff. They have a great patio. At karaoke on Mondays, you can listen to 2 of the performing mavens of their showroom rehearse different songs w/ some wicked harmonies. The showroom: Whether its the Scandalesque student showcase, Th Sic Sense from down at Soul Invictus, or the AZ gender outlaws performing, youll have a great time. The showroom is very intimate. And hey girl hey! The queens that perform here are some of the best in the valley. Pandora DeStrange is reason to come see a show here by herself, but when you do you get hit w/ some wonderful guest stars like Savannah Stevens and the lovely Olivia Gardens.
